Translating Chinese Internet Buzzword into English from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

The popularity of the Internet in China has led to the creation of numerous Internet buzzwords with both unique semantic features and cultural connotations.Based on the Skopos Theory by Vermeer,this thesis investigates the application of Skopos Theory to the translation of newly-created Chinese Internet buzzword.This thesis analyzes five translation strategies for these Chinese buzzword created and translated during the four-year period from 2010 to 2013.The strategy in translating Internet buzzword includes literal translation,free translation,transliteration,literal translation with notes and innovative translation.The result shows that to convey both the semantic and cultural connotations effectively,the application of Skopos theory is a key to the successful translation of these buzzwords from Chinese into English.

A STABILITY RESULT FOR TRANSLATINGSPACELIKE GRAPHS IN LORENTZ MANIFOLDS

In this paper,we investigate spacelike graphs defined over a domain Ω⊂M^(n) in the Lorentz manifold M^(n)×ℝ with the metric−ds^(2)+σ,where M^(n) is a complete Riemannian n-manifold with the metricσ,Ωhas piecewise smooth boundary,and ℝ denotes the Euclidean 1-space.We prove an interesting stability result for translating spacelike graphs in M^(n)×ℝ under a conformal transformation.

On Translating Similes and Metaphors in Traditional Chinese Medicine Literature

This research is to explore the approaches to translating similes and metaphors in TCM works into English based on the translation principles and methods suggested by foreign translators.Through the analysis,conclusions are drawn:①The principle of making sense should be emphasized,since TCM works mainly concentrate on conveying the objective information about human’s physical conditions during diagnosis and therapy.②Literal translation approach can be applied in translating similes to describe the symptoms and signs of the patients.③The translation of metaphors is more complicated.They can be converted into the form of similes or with certain explanations to achieve the comprehensibility of the target language.And some images can be left out from the metaphors or necessary explanations added to make them comprehensible to English readers.

A Robust Model for Translating Arabic Sign Language into Spoken Arabic Using Deep Learning

This study presents a novel and innovative approach to auto-matically translating Arabic Sign Language(ATSL)into spoken Arabic.The proposed solution utilizes a deep learning-based classification approach and the transfer learning technique to retrain 12 image recognition models.The image-based translation method maps sign language gestures to corre-sponding letters or words using distance measures and classification as a machine learning technique.The results show that the proposed model is more accurate and faster than traditional image-based models in classifying Arabic-language signs,with a translation accuracy of 93.7%.This research makes a significant contribution to the field of ATSL.It offers a practical solution for improving communication for individuals with special needs,such as the deaf and mute community.This work demonstrates the potential of deep learning techniques in translating sign language into natural language and highlights the importance of ATSL in facilitating communication for individuals with disabilities.

A Discussion of Untranslatability of Poetry within the Framework of the Studies of Translating Chinese Classics into English

There is a strange phenomenon that the translated works of Chinese classics have not been enjoyed by a large readership abroad,stemming from the untranslatability of poetry,an inherent nature of poetry translation.It is argued with theoretical analyses coupled by case studies that linguistic untranslatability(including intralingual inequivalence,interlingual inequivalence),cultural untranslatability(intercultural inequivalence),translator's inadequacy and governmental or institutional translation briefs contribute to problem mentioned.It is hoped that once the factors influencing untranslatability of poetry is realized,translators'presumptuousness along with despondence can be lessened or even eradicated with a production of a better version free from overrepresentation or underrepresentation or misrepresentation of the originals.

An Experimental Pragmatic Study of Readers’Preferences for Methods Used in Translating Chinese Brand Names

This survey investigated different methods for translating Chinese brand names into English.Results of Pre-investigation show that five methods are most frequently used in translating Chinese Brand Names into English:English,Pinyin,Coinage,Acronym,and English+Pinyin.Two further experiments were conducted.The results of Experiment 1 indicated that participants evaluated translations produced using English as their most favored and English as the most appropriate method to translate Chinese brand names,showing low interest in translations by Pinyin and Coinage.The results of Experiment 2 further supported the English method as the most favored one in comparison to the Acronym and English+Pinyin,methods,and likewise in the methods used to translate different categories of brands.A“Mother-Tongue”Effect is observed in translation.This study concludes that English is the most effective method for translating Chinese brand names.

Translating laboratory anti-aging biotechnology into applied clinical practice:Problems and obstacles

Although the use of biomedical technologies against ageing(rejuvenation biotechnologies) is considered by many as an effective way of controlling all age-related degeneration,in reality this belief cannot be justified. The human body is notoriously resistant to external perturbations and can respond in unpredictable or undesirable ways. Basic concepts of science,evolution and disease must also be considered. In this paper,I discuss some relevant problems associated with the application of any putative rejuvenation biotechnologies such as stem cell therapies,genetic engineering,tissue manipulation,as well as pharmacological approaches. I conclude that these and other biotechnologies will not be applicable to humans in the community. This is due to a wide spectrum of problems and obstacles,such as unpredictable therapeutic results,unrealistic expectations,lack of infrastructure,cellular network disruption,and many more. Even if some such technologies are developed,the totality of the problems,issues and side effects will prove an insurmountable final hurdle,rendering the development of such therapies,essentially and practically useless.

Translating Chinese Movie Titles into English:A Systematic Strategy

As a very important part of people's daily life, film is a popular and influential medium. People from all over the world now have easy access to get to know China through Chinese movies. Therefore the translation of movie titles is very important since they give potential audiences the first impression. This study collects some English translation versions of Chinese movies and discusses their translation strategy. Based on the analysis of some successful examples and inappropriate translations, we put forward a systematic strategy of translating movie titles.

Translating Interdisciplinary Research on Language Learning into Identifying Specific Learning Disabilities in Verbally Gifted and Average Children and Youth

The current research was grounded in prior interdisciplinary research that showed cognitive ability (verbal ability for translating cognitions into oral language) and multiple-working memory endophenotypes (behavioral markers of genetic or brain bases of language learning) predict reading and writing achievement in students with and without specific learning disabilities in written language (SLDs-WL). Results largely replicated prior findings that verbally gifted with dyslexia score higher on reading and writing achievement than those with average verbal ability but not on endophenotypes. The current study extended that research by comparing those with and without SLDs-WL with assessed verbal ability held constant. The verbally gifted without SLDs-WL (n = 14) scored higher than the verbally gifted with SLDs-WL (n = 27) on six language skills (oral sentence construction, best and fastest handwriting in copying, single real word oral reading accuracy, oral pseudoword reading accuracy and rate) and four endophenotypes (orthographic and morphological coding, orthographic loop, and switching attention). The verbally average without SLDs-WL (n = 6) scored higher than the verbally average with SLDs-WL (n = 22) on four language skills (best and fastest hand-writing in copying, oral pseudoword reading accuracy and rate) and two endophenotypes (orthographic coding and orthographic loop). Implications of results for translating interdisciplinary research into flexible definitions for assessment and instruction to serve students with varying verbal abilities and language learning and endophenotype profiles are discussed along with directions for future research.
