To model it, we consider the number of words between any two contiguous interpunctions Ip, because this parameter can model how the human mind memorizes “chunks” of information. Since IP can be calculated for any alphabetical text, we can perform experiments—otherwise impossible— with ancient readers by studying the literary works they used to read. The “experiments” compare the IP of texts of a language/translation to those of another language/translation by measuring the minimum average probability of finding joint readers (those who can read both texts because of similar short-term memory capacity) and by defining an “overlap index”. We also define the population of universal readers, people who can read any New Testament text in any language. Future work is vast, with many research tracks, because alphabetical literatures are very large and allow many experiments, such as comparing authors, translations or even texts written by artificial intelligence tools.展开更多

Especially, tourism is now undergoing an age when people around the world spend much of their time and money knowing more about the characteristics of different cultures. However, when it comes to the translation of tourism texts, the collision between different cultures inevitably leads to many worrying problems, such as ambiguous and rigid translation, which should be taken into consideration. Consequently, this thesis aims to find out some effective solutions to the current problems existing in translation of tourism texts from the perspective of translation aesthetics, which is a way of the integration of translation and aesthetics. Due to the sophisticated coverage of translation aesthetics and the limitation of the paper's size, this thesis lays an emphasis on exploring the beauty in culture, beauty in simplicity, beauty in form and beauty in image in the process of tourism texts translation. The author hopes that this study can help translators create high-quality tourism texts translation to better serve the development of tourism in our country.展开更多

The exhausted parse and analysis bring out the findings that there exists a significant translation difference between the Chinese and English-version product introductory texts on official websites. It is found that Chinese introductory texts are more inclined to rely on exquisite words and redundant expressions to describe products’ features and functions, while switching to the corresponding English version, simple vocabularies and compact sentence structure are more frequent. Hereafter, this paper raises two practical guidelines to instruct translation activities in business contexts.展开更多

Afterlives are embodied in the re-creation of national literature in other countries. With the translation of western novels at the e, nd of 19th century and the beginning of 20^th century in China, the themes in original novels were re-interpreted and re-invented in Chinese context. Moreover, modern aesthetic mode and value became popular, and ancient Chinese language was renovated into modern style. Afterlives can also be seen in the re-translation that is conducted with different interpretation in the same historical period as well as the re-translation that is performed not from the original language in different historical periods. Literary translators play instrumental role as active agents in the delivery of afterlives, extending and growing the original.展开更多

It can interpret the comprehension and production of texts. This paper first makes a thematic analysis of the English original text and the Chinese target text, and then makes a comparative study of them in terms of the textual properties. It is found that in reproduction of target text, theme equivalence can not only help to realize the coherence of the target text with the same effect on receptors but also can save translation efforts. It is unnecessary to change the theme-rheme arrangements of the original unless it is required due to the social and cultural differences between English and Chinese.展开更多

Amongst discussions relevant to court interpreting, the area of sight translation has yet to be emphasized, despite its importance to the outcome of a trial. In this study I first had observations of court interpreting activities on several occasions. Based on these observations, I then formulated a questionnaire and distributed it to 86 interpreters in two training workshops organized by the Taiwan High Court in 2013. The key findings are as follows: most interpreters consider sight translation to be more difficult than other forms of interpretation in the courtroom; while conducting sight translation many interpreters pause in order to seek clarification or are interrupted; most interpreters would prefer the judge or the prosecutor to orally summarize the text to be sight translated; and, after "negotiation," most practitioners tend to lower the level of formality when dealing with a text written in a formal style. These findings imply that interpreters conducting sight translation render a translation through "negotiation" with other participants of the activity; this negotiation can be seen as an attempt to build a "context" from the perspective of liaison interpreting. This study intends to raise the awareness of court interpreters regarding a number of key issues in sight translation, and the results are hoped to be conducive to the future study of other types of liaison interpreting and interpreting as a whole.展开更多

This re-correspondence in semantic level has been well-shown not only in the translation of literature works, but in those of dictionary and glossary translations as well. Semantic clash, generally, is based on two main factors, one is the inherent difference between languages lying in typology features, the other is the social and culture diversity factors lying in the translator's personal background. According to actual translation works, social and culture factors of individual background take the dominant position unconsciously over other features in the process of code-switching. The present paper, branches the latter factor into certain categories, by analyzing bilingual dictionaries and glossaries cases in the 18th century, Qing Dynasty, and indicates that the conceptual lagging, religion beliefs, living environment and political stand embedded in individual background will somehow result in semantic clash, which will lead the relevant research to pay more attention on cross-cultural literature translation.展开更多
