The deepening process of globalization has given rise to restless cultural exchanges among people from different regions of the world through newspapers,books,and other written media.However,the significant differences in languages and cultures have become an insurmountable gap in intercultural communication.To lubricate cultural exchanges,new translation theories that focus on the transformation of different cultural concepts shall be introduced and adopted.This paper aims to extract applicable notions from Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions for pragmatic translation studies by laying emphasis on its pragmatic value through case study.By such theoretical transplantation,valuable suggestions are proposed to tackle cultural misunderstandings and conflicts encountered amid cultural exchanges.

A Survey of English Translation Studies of Lu You’s Poetry Based on the Data Analysis of Domestic Academic Journals (2001-2022)

This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the current state of research on the English translation of Lu You’s poetry, utilizing a data sample comprising research papers published in the CNKI Full-text Database from 2001 to 2022. Employing rigorous longitudinal statistical methods, the study examines the progress achieved over the past two decades. Notably, domestic researchers have displayed considerable interest in the study of Lu You’s English translation works since 2001. The research on the English translation of Lu You’s poetry reveals a diverse range of perspectives, indicating a rich body of scholarship. However, several challenges persist, including insufficient research, limited translation coverage, and a noticeable focus on specific poems such as “Phoenix Hairpin” in the realm of English translation research. Consequently, there is ample room for improvement in the quality of research output on the English translation of Lu You’s poems, as well as its recognition within the academic community. Building on these findings, it is argued that future investigations pertaining to the English translation of Lu You’s poetry should transcend the boundaries of textual analysis and encompass broader theoretical perspectives and research methodologies. By undertaking this shift, scholars will develop a more profound comprehension of Lu You’s poetic works and make substantive contributions to the field of translation studies. Thus, this article aims to bridge the gap between past research endeavors and future possibilities, serving as a guide and inspiration for scholars to embark on a more nuanced and enriching exploration of Lu You’s poetry as well as other Chinese literature classics.

On the issue of representation in Corpus Translation Studies

Corpus Translation Studies （CTS） is a new field in translation studies and the representation of corpus is quite an important issue that deserves attention. At present, the translation theoretical circle holds different views on translation corpora and internal structures. Indeed, the existing translation theories can hardly be applied to CTS. As such, CTS can only make further development after the problem of corpora representation is solved.

Translation Studies in/and International Business Studies:Mapping the Main Research Topics

Over the past two decades,the convergences of translation studies and international business studies have attracted a growing amount of attention from stakeholders in the respective research field.This is particularly because professionals and scholars in international business and management realize the importance of the role of language and translation in international trade and multilingual communication.The research results in this interdisciplinary field could provide basis for making critical decisions,such as the staff recruitment,company language policy and company development strategy.However,few reviews have been available that provide a comprehensive overview of relevant practice and research in this cross-disciplinary efforts.The present article therefore aims to offer a state-of-the-art review and investigate the existing literature to map the main research topics and discover future agenda.This article first provides an overview of the perception of“translation”,the role of translator,and translational activities in international business studies.Second,the review focuses on the translation and knowledge transfer in multinational corporations.Lastly,it identifies future directions towards the cross-fertility of the interdisciplinary collaboration.

Revisiting the concepts of translation studies:equivalence in linguistic translation from the point of view of Peircean universal categories

The concept of equivalence seems to be one of the most contentious issues of the academic discourse on linguistic translation,as it has long been associated with the much criticised approaches that would follow the naive idea of sameness or close correspondence between languages.For these reasons there have been voices claiming that the concept is not needed and,as such,should be rejected.However,equivalence is central to linguistic translation,being one of the main goals of this activity,even though it is often hidden behind other concepts,including adequacy,relevance or interpretive resemblance.Accordingly,a more global approach offered by semiotics may help to revisit the traditional,yet unpopular,understanding of equivalence.This article attempts to discuss the concept of equivalence from the point of view of the universal categories put forward by Charles Sanders Peirce.To this end it provides an overview of approaches to equivalence within the discipline of translation studies,lists the most pertinent features of the concept and refers them to Peirce's universal categories.It is argued that equivalence is founded on the triad similaritydifference-mediation that is determined by and within the context of translation.

A Descriptive Translation Study of Chinese Translation of French Musical Roméo et Juliette

This paper presents a Descriptive Translation Study(DTS)analysis of the Chinese translation of the French musical adaptation of Romeo and Juliet,titled Roméo et Juliette:de la Haineàl’Amour.Romeo and Juliet,a timeless play by Shakespeare,has captivated audiences since its premiere in 1597 and has been adapted into various forms,including stage productions,films,musicals,and operas.The focus of this study is to analyze the Chinese translation of the French musical adaptation from a DTS perspective.DTS is an approach that aims to understand the translation process and its reception in the target culture.By examining language choices,cultural references,and adaptation strategies,this study seeks to shed light on how the Chinese translation of the French musical functions within the target culture and influences the reception and interpretation of the source text.This analysis is expected to gain insights into the challenges and strategies employed in translating a musical adaptation of Romeo and Juliet into Chinese.The findings of this study will contribute to the field of translation studies and provide a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in the translation of musical works.

Concepts, Methods, and Media: Three Keywords for a Historiography of Translation Studies

The movement of theories belongs both to the history and the sociology of disciplines, especially to their institutionalization. Epistemology should also be added here, though sometimes disguised as the History of Ideas, sometimes labeled as the Philosophy of Science. One of the major paradoxes, or even contradictions, in TS seems to be the double bind of opening borders and establishing limits - hence the simultaneous struggle for interdisciplinarity and for hyper-specialized compartmentalization. The field has yet to acknowledge the fragmented nature of its origins, traditions and filiations. To date, the dissemination of TS, along with its different paradigms and approaches, has become visible through certain concepts such as turn, meme, and model, among other ways. Our paper examines certain conditions underlying the development of a historiography of TS. In particular, it insists on the relevance of a media history of translation.

In the article,Corpus Linguistics for Translation and Contrastive Studies:A Guide for Research is reviewed.Overall,the book can act as a handy guide to the field of corpus-based contrastive and translation studies for researchers,particularly beginning ones.It informs readers of parallel corpus building and using such a corpus for various research purposes with different software,etc.However,the book can be improved,apart from some minor errors,by covering studies on parallel corpora involving language pairs other than European ones,those on interpretation corpora,and so on.

＂New＂ Translations of Japanese Literature： Socio-cultural Impacts on the Japanese Mind

In terms of translation theory today, the essential discussions of ＂otherness＂, coupled with the agenda of bilateral approaches to its untranslatability, are much more intense than ever. The stereotypical images of Japan as something quite alien yet enchanting in Japanese literature, in The Tale of Genji for instance, are drastically different from those in modem novels, where the experience of conflicts with the West in the course of modernization could not be ignored. Shusaku Endo＇s Silence for example, paradoxically questions the translatability of Christianity in the historical context of the Japanese mind. By reading some translated texts of Japanese literature, we come to be aware of the essential factors of＂otherness＂ inherent in Japanese culture and language which, in some socio-cultural ways, has had an interesting effect on Japanese minds. With the growing interest in ＂world literature,＂ ＂otherness＂ and ＂untranslatability＂ illuminated in the translations of Japanese literature offer a new perspective with which we can re-think our sense of history of modernization on the one hand; and re-evaluate the uniqueness of Japanese language on the other. The remarkable influence of translators whose mother tongue is not Japanese, but who have an excellent command of the language, enables a new Japanese culture to emerge. This is evident in the works of Arthur Binard, an American poet and translator, who enthusiastically criticizes the Japanese policy of atomic energy in his translations of the Japanese poems after World War II, and in the very inspiring essays on Japanese by Roger Pulvers, an Australian writer and playwright who won prizes for his translations of Kenji Miyazawa. Along with such new trend of translations of Japanese literature, how it affects the Japanese mind will be discussed.

Complexity Theory, Emergence, and Translation： Educating Translators as Agents of Human Interaction in a Complex Society

This paper sets out to argue the relevance for translation studies of complexity theory. It endeavours to argue, though briefly, that translation can be conceptualized as an emergent concept. It then indicates how theories of emergence in social studies provide new scope to theorise agency. Lastly, it considers the implications of the conceptualization for translator education. The arguments put forward in this paper lay the foundation for a philosophy of translation, i.e., a meta-theory of translation in which translation is viewed both as emerging from particular complex human interactions such as language and as being co-determined by complex contextual factors.

Rethinking the Use of ＂Should＂ in Translation Criticism

The use of ＂should＂ in the applied translation studies such as translators training, translation aids and translation criticism has proved to be one of the most important tools for progress in the discipline since Holme put forward the basic map of Translation Studies. In this paper, the author discusses mainly the use of ＂should＂ in translation criticism, arguing that, the many advantages to be had by this method notwithstanding, there are problems. For example, it is not always fair to judge one translator＇s work too soon and too sure; and offering overwhelming advice induces disrespect to the translator. For these reasons, the author argues, it is worth exploring ways of translation criticism beyond traditional mode of＂should＂ which may seem subversive of standard uses, either alone or in conjunction with Descriptive Translation Studies （DTS）.

A Comparative Study of the Poem Translation Styles of the German Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions From the Perspective of Corpus-Translatology

Poetry is an integral part of the artistic framework of A Dream of Red Mansions,and plays a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere,portraying characters,and reflecting social reality,therefore it has both unique artistic charm and research value.This paper takes Kuhn’s and Schwarz’s translation of A Dream of Red Mansions as the research objects,selects 19 poems that both translators have translated to make a corpus,uses the software LancsBox to compare the translations from three levels of vocabulary,syntax,and text,in order to provide a new interpretation dimension for the translation research of A Dream of Red Mansions and enrich the application of the corpus-based method in the field of translation research of Chinese classics.

A translational study of somatosensory evoked potential time–frequency components in rats,goats,and humans

Somatosensory evoked potentials(SEPs)have been widely used to assess neurological function in clinical practice.A good understanding of the association between SEP signals and neurological function is helpful for precise diagnosis of impairment location.Previous studies on SEPs have been reported in animal models.However,few studies have reported the relationships between SEP waveforms in animals and those in humans.In this study,we collected normal SEP waveforms and decomposed them into specific time–frequency components(TFCs).Our results showed three stable TFC distribution regions in intact goats and rats and in humans.After we induced spinal cord injury in the animal models,a greater number of small TFC distribution regions were observed in the injured goat and rat groups than in the normal group.Moreover,there were significant correlations(P<0.05)and linear relationships between the main SEP TFCs of the human group and those of the goat and rat groups.A stable TFC distribution of SEP components was observed in the human,goat and rat groups,and the TFC distribution modes were similar between the three groups.Results in various animal models in this study could be translated to future clinical studies based on SEP TFC analysis.Human studies were approved by the Institutional Review Board of the University of Hong Kong/Hospital Authority Hong Kong West Cluster(approval No.UM 05-312 T/975)on December 5,2005.Rat experiments were approved by the Committee on the Use of Live Animals in Teaching and Research of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong(approval No.CULART 2912-12)on January 28,2013.Goat experiments were approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University(approval No.GDY2002132)on March 5,2018.

Low Carbohydrate Diets in Type 2 Diabetes—A Translational Study

Although intensive interventions with low carbohydrate diets compared with higher carbohydrate diets can reduce HbA1c in people with type 2 diabetes, it is not clear if simple advice to make modest reductions in carbohydrate is effective in clinical practice. Forty-three people with type 2 diabetes and poor control (HbA1c > 7.5%) were randomized to receive 2 short education sessions over 6 months with a non-dietitian researcher on how to reduce carbohydrate intake by about 25% or to 2 control sessions in which the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating was provided. Hba1c and fasting glucose and lipids were measured at baseline and 3 months and 6 months. 33 volunteers attended a baseline visit;27 completed 3 months and 24 6 months. HbA1c was reduced by 0.6% - 0.7% in the low carbohydrate diet group compared with the control group (P = 0.1). Fasting glucose was reduced by 2.3 mmol/L compared with the control group at 3 months (P < 0.03) only. Changes in HbA1c at 6 months were related to baseline HbA1c in the intervention group only. Although we have obtained suggestive evidence that a low carbohydrate diet can be successfully implemented in normal practice without professional help, our results are limited by low participant numbers and further studies are required.
