The integration of cross-cultural inquiries into the realm of translation has given rise to a distinct subfield known as cross-cultural translation studies. This approach emphasizes the importance of delving into the cultural subtleties and the awareness of cultural subjectivity within the translation process.Central to this framework is the concept of reshaping cultural nuances and the subjectivity of culture. This paper introduces three principal translation strategies that emerge from a cross-cultural standpoint:the alienation translation strategy, the‘cannibalism’translation strategy, and the destructive translation strategy.Utilizing the English translation of“Dream of the Red Chamber”as a case study, the paper examines how cultural nuances and cultural subjectivity influence the selection of translation strategies and demonstrates the practical application of cross-cultural research within the translation sphere.Hence, the significance of cross-cultural translation studies lies in its capacity to offer a novel lens through which to view translation studies. It encourages a reevaluation of cultural nuances and subjectivity in translation, which is of profound practical importance for advancing the field of translation studies, enhancing cross-cultural communication, and facilitating the spread of Chinese discourse on the global stage. 展开更多

Translation is an activity aimed at transferring the source language to the target language, related to many aspects involving culture, society, history and so on.The translator plays a critical role in translation practice.Xu Jun considers"translator’s subjectivity should be reflected to be artistic personal consciousness in translated works."Translator’s differences in age, gender, personal traits, educational level and other aspects make translation artistry completely divergent. Therefore, translator’s subjectivity shoulders great significances on the success of literary translation, which isn’t arbitrary, out of control, must be conducted in line with essence of the original work. This paper focuses on the gender difference of translator’s subjectivity in literary translation, hoping to find a way of eliminating the influence of it in the translation work. 展开更多

Science and technology translation involves various industries and professions, with its own system of terminology and unique language features. For a translator, who is not a professional scientist or technician,it seems to be difficult to do science and technology translation accurately and properly.Consequently,it is necessary for the translator to give play to his subjectivity when translating science and technology documents or related interpretation:searching for related data to replenish necessary professional knowledge, consulting with professional technicians actively to clarify the jargon and common sayings, and thinking critically to scrutiny the source text. 展开更多

From the Subjectivity of Human Rights to the Universality of Human Rights——A Preliminary Interpretation of the Theory on the Subjectivity of Human Rights

Universality is one of the essential characteristics of human rights, but there is a substantive difference between idealism and realism in understanding the concept of universality of human rights. The concepts of radical universality and strong universality based on the concept of natural human rights are too idealistic and thus have a high risk of being alienated into a tool of international re-pression in practice. On the contrary, the theory on the subjectivity of human rights can effectively defuse this risk brought about by radical universality and strong universality. Advocating a transition from the universality of human rights to the subjectivity of human rights not only keeps in line with the actual construction process of international human rights, but can also effectively interpret the practical difficul-ties in the realization process of international human rights. Therefore, it can be used as another alternative theory on human rights beyond the theory of natural human rights. 展开更多

It has been acknowledged by Chinese translators that in translating English puns the center should be put on the thorough comprehension of the original expression that more often than not has more than one meanings and the flexible handling of conversion from the native language to the target one. Literal translation will often be impossible, annotation redundant, and the restructuring and remaking of new ways that create and maintain balance or similarity in function and value will be more preferred as a possible way-out for pun-translation. Examples attached are from the writer of this article who is also the translator of a published historical book where punning can be found. 展开更多

In the 21st century, the development of digital and new media technologies has ushered in an age of pervasive multimodal communication, which has significantly amplified the role of multimodal translation in facilitating crosscultural exchanges.Despite the profound impact of these developments, the prevailing translation pedagogy remains predominantly focused on the enhancement of linguistic translation skills, with noticeable neglect of the imperative to cultivate students’competencies in multimodal translation.Based on the distinctive characteristics and challenges that multimodal translation presents in the context of new media, this study delves into the formulation of educational objectives and curriculum design for the training of multimodal translators. The intent is to propose a framework that can guide the preparation of translators who are adept and equipped to navigate the complexities and demands of the contemporary age. 展开更多

The invisibility was even taken as one of the standards of a good translator. However, great change happens, especially after the"culture turn"in translation study and the role of the translators has been laid emphasis on. This kind of sharp change has led to two extreme thoughts on this issue: scholars choose either total invisibility or complete subjectivity. This paper puts forward an inter-subjective system, in which the subjectivity should be emphasized only with constraints. The other subjects in the inter-subjective system contribute to the restriction of the subjectivity of the translator during the translation process.By writing this paper, the author wishes to present a comprehensive and balanced way of understanding translators' subjectivity. Therefore, no matter analyzing the translation process or evaluating translation products, people will be more objective towards the role of translators. 展开更多

The translation activity is a process of the interlinguistic transmission of information realized by the information encoding and decoding.Encoding and decoding, cognitive practices operated in objective contexts, are inevitably of selectivity ascribing to the restriction of contextual reasons. The translator as the intermediary agent connects the original author(encoder)and the target readers(decoder),shouldering the dual duties of the decoder and the encoder, for which his subjectivity is irrevocably manipulated by the selectivity of encoding and decoding. 展开更多

As the center and subject of the translation, translator' s subjectivity plays a great role in translation research and more and more attention has been aroused. Since the first version of Pride and Prejudice came into being, Chinese translators have begun to show great interest in translating this novel, and there are more than ten translated Chinese versions now. Scholars have conducted a lot of research about this novel and its various translated versions. Among all these Chinese versions, Wang Keyi' s version is relatively earlier and is also the most popular one. Thus, it attracts many readers' eyes and there are increasing comments and studies on this version. There are also studies analyzing or comparing several versions from the perspective of translator' s subjectivity. While, few articles are published to analyze this version from the three elements of translator' s subjectivity: initiatives, passiveness, and purposiveness. They are also three basic features of translator' s subjectivity, in which translator' s subjectivity reflects. It is also the three features that consist of the translator' s subjectivity. With the translation studies leaning to target-language, the translator's subjectivity has been paid more and more attention by translation scholars. It is noticed gradually that translation is actually a dynamic and complex process, during which the translator, acting as a reader of the source text and also a writer of the target text, will unavoidably add something subjective in his or her translation. Since literary translation is interwoven with more cultural and social elements, the translator has to make a choice between loyalty and violation, getting freedom and being restricted when he or she confronts with all the clashes and conflicts between the source language culture and the target language culture. 展开更多
