Drawing upon the theory of reception aesthetics, this dissertation aims to discuss the translator's translation of You Can YouWill. Beginning with preliminary background information, e.g. the source book and writer, the translator further introduces theories andprevious related research, including Christian work. There are two representatives of reception theory; the translator stresses Jauss' per-spective of reception aesthetics, detailing his two key notions: the reader's decisive role and horizon of expectation. These notions shiftthe focus from the writer and text to the reader, which is a proven method to make the translation more acceptable to readers. Based onthe translation brief, target readers are Christians. During the translation process, the translator keeps key notions of reception aestheticstop-of-mind and strives to produce a version suitable for Christian readers. Some strategies, e.g. domestication and footnoting, are em-ployed to discuss the translation of biblical terms, Christian expressions, verses or stories from the Bible, metaphors and cultural items.In addition to these strategies, all translation is in accordance with CUV when encountering Bible-related text, due to CUV's authorityamong all versions of the Bible. Lastly, the translator provides conclusive remarks based on analysis as well as suggestions for further re-search. Limitations of this study are also mentioned. 展开更多

Movie is a popular art which occupies an important position in people's leisure time. Movie title,as the most direct and accessible tool for audience to know about the movie,is very significant to attract audience into the cinema. Therefore,the translation of movie title cannot be ignored. However,due to the cultural differences in Chinese and English culture,the problem of movie title translation is obvious which needs to be paid attention to the translation and people working in movie industry.Traditional translation theory puts more emphasis on the important and authoritative status of original text and author. But this notion cannot satisfy the needs of movie title translation to the largest extent. Movie is not only a cultural and linguistic product,it also is a special commercial product. The ultimate objective of movie is to allure the audience into the cinema to watch and appreciate it in addition to provide the cultural information. Reception aesthetics,as a theory of literary criticism,gives priority to readers' role in literary understanding and interpretation. According to reception aesthetics,the horizon of expectation should be taken into consideration when the translation work begins to be done. Horizon of expectation is composed of the readers' or audiences' previous cultural norms,assumptions,and criteria in the source language and culture at a given time. Movie title,as a special text,is also understood and influenced by the audience's horizon of expectation. Chinese audience,before they decide to watch a movie,are naturally harbor their horizon of expectation about the movie. They will form their judgment and assumptions about the genre,plot,story,background about the movie from the movie title. These kind of horizon of expectation will consequently influence their ultimate decision to watch the movie or not. Hence,in doing the movie title translation,the translator is supposed to keep the audience's horizon of expectation in mind and try his utmost to achieve the fusion of expectation. In this way,the comparatively satisfactory version is likely to come into being and finally will live up to the audience's expectations. As a result,from the perspective of reception aesthetics,the author proposes three feasible translation methods of movie title: literal translation,free translation and adaptation. 展开更多

Documentary is an important form of audiovisual works with the characteristics of both authenticity and artistry, which plays a significant role in the spread of culture and knowledge. Reception aesthetics is a theory of literary criticism raised by the German literature theoretician and aesthetician Hans Robert Jauss in the 1960 s, in which the focus of literary studies is shifted from the author and text to the reader. It emphasizes reader's participation and acceptance during the text understanding, by shifting the central position of studies from the author and work to the reader. It claims that only the works that have been comprehended and delivered by readers possess artistic value and meaning. With the characteristic of audience-centered, documentary happens to coincide with reception aesthetics theory which takes readers' horizon of expectation into consideration. Applying the theory of reception aesthetics as its interpretive framework, this paper makes an effort to study subtitle translation of documentary films. 展开更多

Previous studies on translations of Huangdi Neijing(The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic)have focused on English versions;little attention has been given to non-English translations.The present study is the first investigation of the reception of the seven Spanish versions of Huangdi Neijing in terms of three parameters:collection records in libraries worldwide;book reviews and citation counts in international journals;and customer reviews on Amazon.The results revealed four features of Spanish translations and communication of Huangdi Neijing in terms of reception of academia,reception of general readers,the center of translation and communication,and the role of Chinese scholars.These factors demonstrate the marginal status of Spanish translations of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)classics.The implications are summarized in hopes of promoting the translation and communication of TCM classics in the Spanish-speaking world and to provide insights into the communication of TCM culture in the non-English-speaking world. 展开更多
