Lithium recovery from spent lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)have attracted extensive attention due to the skyrocketing price of lithium. The medium-temperature carbon reduction roasting was proposed to preferential selective extraction of lithium from spent Li-CoO_(2)(LCO)cathodes to overcome the incomplete recovery and loss of lithium during the recycling process. The LCO layered structure was destroyed and lithium was completely converted into water-soluble Li2CO_(3)under a suitable temperature to control the reduced state of the cobalt oxide. The Co metal agglomerates generated during medium-temperature carbon reduction roasting were broken by wet grinding and ultrasonic crushing to release the entrained lithium. The results showed that 99.10%of the whole lithium could be recovered as Li2CO_(3)with a purity of 99.55%.This work provided a new perspective on the preferentially selective extraction of lithium from spent lithium batteries. 展开更多

Understanding the transport resistance of water molecules in polyamide(PA)reverse osmosis(RO)membranes at the molecular level is of great importance in guiding the design, preparation, and applications of these membranes. In this work,we use molecular simulation to calculate the total transport resistance by dividing it into two contributions:the interior part and the interfacial part. The interior resistance is dependent on the thickness of the PA layer, while the interfacial resistance is not.Simulation based on the 5 nm PA layer reveals that interfacial resistance is the dominating contribution(>62%)to the total resistance. However, for real-world RO membranes with a 200 nm PA layer, interfacial resistance plays a minor role, with a contribution below 10%.This implies that there is a risk of inaccuracy when using the typical method to estimate the transport resistance of RO membranes,as this method involves simply multiplying the total transport resistance of the simulated value based on a membrane with a 5 nm PA layer.Furthermore, both the interfacial resistance and the interior resistance are dependent on the chemistry of the PA layer. Our simulation reveals that decreasing the number of residual carboxyl groups in the PA layer leads to decreased interior resistance;therefore, the water permeability can be improved at no cost of ion rejection, which is in excellent agreement with the experimental results. 展开更多

Background: A marked decrease in malaria-related deaths worldwide has been attributed to the administration of effective antimalarials against Plasmodium falciparum. However, the continuous spread of P. falciparum resistance to anti-malarial drugs is raising a serious problem in controlling Malaria to the vulnerable children’s immune system. In recent studies, Plasmodium falciparum Kelch 13 propeller gene (Pfk13) has been reported to develop resistance to artemisinin in South Asia. In this study, we checked Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine resistance transporter gene (Pfcrt) involved in chloroquine (CQ) resistance. Method: In this study, archived 280 samples were collected from Alupe primary school children in Busia, Western Kenya from May, 2016 to November, 2016. Genomic DNA was extracted using the MightyPrep reagent. The samples were investigated for P. falciparum positivity out of which 67 of them tested positive giving a prevalence rate of 24%. The sixty-seven were subjected to PCR amplification for the molecular marker resistance to Pfcrt. After PCR amplification, the amplicons were purified and sequenced using Sanger Sequencing. The sequence data were analyzed using BioEdit software to identify point mutations. Results: 14 samples sequences were analyzed on Bioedit software giving the following amino acid changes F76C, Y66H, L70A, Y58C, T59V, V65I, P67L, T81L, Y60S, Y66S, P67T and I71F). New mutations have been reported at position 76 leading to an amino acid change, one of Pfcrt gold standard biomarkers. However, amino acid changes Y66H, L70A, Y58C, T59V, V65I, P67L, T81L, Y60S, Y66S, P67T and I71F are newly reported giving an increase in Pfcrt prevalence of concern from zero to 5.0%. A phylogenetic evolutionary relationship was constructed as shown below. Generally, the results showed a continuous resistance of P.falciparum to Pfcrt which calls for robust continuous monitoring and surveillance. Conclusion: Due to the increase of the resistant Pfcrt gene prevalence, continuous development of new mutants against chloroquine indicates that there is need to repurpose anti-malarial drugs for future partner drugs. 展开更多

A large-scale industrial application of proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs)greatly depends on both substantial cost reduction and continuous durability enhancement. However, compared to effects of material degradation on apparent activity loss, little attention has been paid to influences on the phenomena of mass transport. In this review, influences of the degradation of key materials in membrane electrode assemblies(MEAs)on oxygen transport resistance in both cathode catalyst layers(CCLs)and gas diffusion layers(GDLs)are comprehensively explored, including carbon support, electrocatalyst, ionomer in CCLs as well as carbon material and hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)in GDLs.It is analyzed that carbon corrosion in CCLs will result in pore structure destruction and impact ionomer distribution, thus affecting both the bulk and local oxygen transport behavior.Considering the catalyst degradation,an eventual decrease in electrochemical active surface area(ECSA)definitely increases the local oxygen transport resistance since a decrease in active sites will lead to a longer oxygen transport path.It is also noted that problems concerning oxygen transport caused by the degradation of ionomer chemical structure in CCLs should not be ignored. Both cation contamination and chemical decomposition will change the structure of ionomer, thus worsening the local oxygen transport. Finally,it is found that the loss of carbon and PTFE in GDLs lead to a higher hydrophilicity, which is related to an occurrence of water flooding and increase in the oxygen transport resistance. 展开更多

High cost has undoubtedly become the biggest obstacle to the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs),in which Pt-based catalysts employed in the cathodic catalyst layer(CCL)account for the major portion of the cost.Although nonprecious metal catalysts(NPMCs)show appreciable activity and stability in the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR),the performance of fuel cells based on NPMCs remains unsatisfactory compared to those using Pt-based CCL.Therefore, most studies on NPMC-based fuel cells focus on developing highly active catalysts rather than facilitating oxygen transport. In this work, the oxygen transport behavior in CCLs based on highly active Fe-N-C catalysts is comprehensively explored through the elaborate design of two types of membrane electrode structures, one containing low-Pt-based CCL and NPMCbased dummy catalyst layer(DCL)and the other containing only the NPMC-based CCL.Using Zn-N-C based DCLs of different thickness, the bulk oxygen transport resistance at the unit thickness in NPMC-based CCL was quantified via the limiting current method combined with linear fitting analysis. Then, the local and bulk resistances in NPMC-based CCLs were quantified via the limiting current method and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Results show that the ratios of local and bulk oxygen transport resistances in NPMCbased CCL are 80%and 20%,respectively,and that an enhancement of local oxygen transport is critical to greatly improve the performance of NPMC-based PEMFCs.Furthermore, the activity of active sites per unit in NPMCbased CCLs was determined to be lower than that in the Pt-based CCL,thus explaining worse cell performance of NPMC-based membrane electrode assemblys(MEAs).It is believed that the development of NPMC-based PEMFCs should proceed not only through the design of catalysts with higher activity but also through the improvement of oxygen transport in the CCL. 展开更多

There exist big gaps between measurements and modeling predictions on solids holdup and pressure drop in dense solids transport, such as those occuring in the bottom sections of gas-solids risers. The inability of closing this gap by common modeling approaches indicates certain missing and/or misrepresentation of some controlling mechanisms in modeling the transport. Previous research efforts show that the gap can not be effectively narrowed by simply modifying the drag force formulations without inclusion of the collision effect. This paper explores the origin of some controlling mechanisms that might have been overlooked in previous modeling approaches, and recommends how to make the model dense solids transport better. Our analysis shows the presence of a resistant force arising from inter-particle collision when the solids are accelerated in dense-phase transport. This may be caused by non-equilibrium collision during solids acceleration, which differs from local-equilibrium assumptions on which the current kinetic theory modeling of granular particles is based. A complete modeling of this collision-induced resistance calls for a total revision of the kinetic theory, with the inclusion of non-equilibrium collisions and offcenter collisions in dense solids transport. 展开更多
