We experimentally demonstrate an electrically triggered terahertz(THz) dual-band tunable band-pass filter based on Si_3 N_4–VO_2–Si_3 N_4 sandwich-structured hybrid metamaterials. The insulator–metal phase transition of VO_2 film is induced by the Joule thermal effect of the top metal layer. The finite-integration-time-domain(FITD) method and finite element method(FEM) are used for numerical simulations. The sample is fabricated using a surface micromachining process,and characterized by a THz time-domain-spectrometer(TDS). When the bias current is 0.225 A, the intensity modulation depths at two central frequencies of 0.56 THz and 0.91 THz are about 81.7% and 81.3%, respectively. This novel design can achieve dynamically electric–thermo–optic modulation in the THz region, and has potential applications in the fields of THz communications, imaging, sensing, and astronomy exploration. 展开更多

We experimentally demonstrate a mechanically tunable metamaterials terahertz(THz) dual-band bandstop filter. The unit cell of the filter contains an inner aluminum circle and an outside aluminum Ohm-ring on high resistance silicon substrate. The performance of the filter is simulated by finite-integration-time-domain(FITD) method. The sample is fabricated using a surface micromachining process and experimentally demonstrated using a THz time-domain-spectroscopy(TDS) system. The results show that, when the incident THz wave is polarized in y-axis, the filter has two intensive absorption peaks locating at 0.71 THz and 1.13 THz, respectively. The position of the high-frequency absorption peak and the amplitude of the low-frequency absorption peak can be simultaneously tuned by rotating the sample along its normal axis.The tunability of the high-frequency absorption peak is due to the shift of resonance frequency of two electrical dipoles,and that of the low-frequency absorption peak results from the effect of rotationally induced transparent. This tunable filter is very useful for switch, manipulation, and frequency selective detection of THz beam. 展开更多

Multiple optical carriers in conjunction with the F-P LD will realize a filter with multiple passbands. By adjusting the wavelengths of the multiple optical carriers, multiple passbands are merged into a single passband with a broadened bandwidth. By varying the number of the optical carrier, the bandwidth can be adjusted. The central frequency can be tuned by adjusting the wavelength of the multiple optical carriers simultaneously. Dynamically tunable terahertz passband filter based on metamaterials integrated with a graphene middle layer

The dynamic tunability of a terahertz(THz) passband filter was realized by changing the Fermi energy(EF) of graphene based on the sandwiched structure of metal-graphene-metal metamaterials(MGMs). By using plane wave simulation, we demonstrated that the central frequency( f0) of the proposed filter can shift from 5.04 THz to 5.71 THz; this shift is accompanied by a 3 dB bandwidth( f) decrease from 1.82 THz to 0.01 THz as the EFincreases from 0 to 0.75 eV.Additionally, in order to select a suitable control equation for the proposed filter, the curves of f and f0 under different graphene EFwere fitted using five different mathematical models. The fitting results demonstrate that the Dose Resp model offers accurate predictions of the change in the 3 dB bandwidth, and the Quartic model can successfully describe the variation in the center frequency of the proposed filter. Moreover, the electric field and current density analyses show that the dynamic tuning property of the proposed filter is mainly caused by the competition of two coupling effects at different graphene EF, i.e., graphene-polyimide coupling and graphene-metal coupling. This study shows that the proposed structures are promising for realizing dynamically tunable filters in innovative THz communication systems. 展开更多

In this paper we propose a two-pole varactor-tuned superconducting filter using coplanar waveguide (CPW) spiralin-spiral-out (SISO) resonators. Novel internal and external coupling structures are introduced to meet the requirements for a tunable filter with a constant absolute bandwidth. The fabricated device has a frequency tuning range of 14.4% at frequencies ranging from 274.1 MHz to 317.7 MHz, a 3-dB bandwidth of 5.14±0.06 MHz, and an insertion loss of 0.08 dB-0.70 dB. The simulated and measured results are in excellent agreement with each other. 展开更多

Sensitive detection of acetylene(C_2H_2) is performed by absorption spectroscopy and wavelength modulation spectroscopy(WMS) based on Fiber Fabry–Perot tunable filter(FFP-TF) at 1530.32 nm. After being calibrated by Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG), FFP-TF is frequency-multiplexed and modulated at 20 Hz and 2.5 kHz respectively to achieve wavelength modulation. The linearity with 0.9907 fitting coefficient is obtained by measuring different concentrations in a 100 ppmv–400 ppmv range. Furthermore, the stability of the system is analyzed by detecting 50 ppmv and 100 ppmv standard gases for 2 h under room temperature and ambient pressure conditions respectively. The precision of 11 ppmv is achieved by calculating the standard deviation. Therefore, the measuring system of C_2H_2 detection can be applied in practical applications. 展开更多

Lumped-equivalent circuit model for multi-stage cascaded magnetoelectric dual-tunable bandpass filter

A lumped-equivalent circuit model of a novel magnetoelectric tunable bandpass filter, which is realized in the form of multi-stage cascading between a plurality of magnetoelectric laminates, is established in this paper for convenient analysis.The multi-stage cascaded filter is degraded to the coupling microstrip filter with only one magnetoelectric laminate and then compared with the existing experiment results. The comparison reveals that the insertion loss curves predicted by the degraded circuit model are in good agreement with the experiment results and the predicted results of the electromagnetic field simulation, thus the validity of the model is verified. The model is then degraded to the two-stage cascaded magnetoelectric filter with two magnetoelectric laminates. It is revealed that if the applied external bias magnetic or electric fields on the two magnetoelectric laminates are identical, then the passband of the filter will drift under the changed external field; that is to say, the filter has the characteristics of external magnetic field tunability and electric field tunability. If the applied external bias magnetic or electric fields on two magnetoelectric laminates are different, then the passband will disappear so that the switching characteristic is achieved. When the same magnetic fields are applied to the laminates, the passband bandwidth of the two-stage cascaded magnetoelectric filter with two magnetoelectric laminates becomes nearly doubled in comparison with the passband filter which contains only one magnetoelectric laminate. The bandpass effect is also improved obviously. This research will provide a theoretical basis for the design, preparation, and application of a new high performance magnetoelectric tunable microwave device. 展开更多

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used to design the GMRF. The tunability of the GMRF is achieved by an MEMS-based physical movement (in the horizontal or vertical direction) combined with an incident angle in a certain range. The results show that the resonant wavelength tuning of 110 nm (140mm) is obtained by horizontal movement of 168 nm (vertical movement of 435 nm) combined with an about 11° variation of incident angle. 展开更多

The same topology provides lowpass (LP), bandpass (BP) and highpass (HP) characteristics with appropriate choice and location of the RC components in the circuit. Incorporation of a suitable feedback loop through a voltage buffer unity-gain cell yields a tunable sinusoid oscillator. Effects of the device port mismatch errors (ε) and parasitic z-node capacitance (Cz) of the CDBA element are shown to be insignificant and corresponding sensitivities are extremely low. Satisfactory experimental verifications of the filter quality (Q) and oscillator tuning range (500 KHz ≤ fo ≤ 5 MHz) are carried out. 展开更多

A wideband tunable frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (FD-OEO) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on a polarization modulator and an optical bandpass filter (OBPF). The central frequency of the correspondingly fundamental OEO could be adjusted by tuning the bandwidth and central frequency of the OBPF, which could also be regarded as a photonic-assisted tunable microwave filter. The frequency tuning range of the FD-OEO covers from 9.5 to 32.8?GHz, and the single sideband phase noise of the fundamental signal is lower than -100dBc/Hz at an offset of 10?kHz. Moreover, the frequency stability of the generated signal is investigated by measuring its Allan deviation. The Allan deviation of the generated fundamental signal at 10?GHz is 2.39×10^-9. 展开更多

The transfer function of the optical splitting system of the acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) is deduced to be a reference to optical design. The characteristic matrix (transfer function) of AOTF is used to describe quantitatively the characters of polarization elements in the orthogonal polarizing system. According to the characteristic matrix, the included angle of polarizer′s transmission direction and polarization analyzer′s transmission direction should be 90°. As a result the signal to noise ratio increased about 20 times though the light intensity was reduced to 54.300,because both the transmittances of polarizer and polarization analyzer are 0.74, which is an intrinsic character. The orthogonal polarizing method is an effective method to get rid of the influence of zero order light and improve the spectrum resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. 展开更多

This paper presents a new concept to implement a tunable filter metamaterial with dual negative refraction composed of ferrite slabs and metallic resonators, including split-ring resonators (SRR), and short wire pairs. The ferrite slabs under an applied magnetics bias provide one magnetic resonance frequency band and the metallic resonators provide another one. The continuous wires within the metamaterials provide the negative permittivity in a wide frequency band covering the two magnetic resonance bands. This type of metamaterialis analyzed in detail, and tunable stop band filters are successfully designed. The effective electromagnetic parameters obtained from the simulation of the S-parameters indicate that metamaterial exhibit negative refraction bands, which can be shifted by changing the magnetic bias. 展开更多

The measured pressure sensitivity is -1.80×10 -4 /MPa, which is about two orders of magnitude better than a simple monomode fiber with an in-fiber grating.
