A mathematical model is set to evaluate the 3-D dense solid-liquid two-phaseturbulent flow in a non-clogging mud pump, the flow feature in the impeller channel is simulatedwith the tool of IPSA. Meanwhile, resort to TECPLOT as the post-processor, the simulation results isvisualized. The results show the main flow characteristics: There exists backflow and aberrantvelocities at inlet area and a relative velocity slip between two phases; A jet-wake flow pattern isdiscerned around the shroud-suction side area; The relative velocity vector of solid phase iscloser to the pressure surface than that of liquid phase and the trend is more obvious with theincrease of diameter; The kinetic energy of turbulence k and the dissipation rate e reach theirpeaks at the corner of pressure and suction surface. The simulation results show a good agreementwith the experimental flow features in the impeller channel, which prove the turbulent model used isvalid and provide a theoretical design basis to non-clogging pumps. 展开更多

Direct numerical simulation of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer over a compliant wall with anisotropic wall material properties is performed. The Reynolds number varies from 300 to approximately 860 along the streamwise direction, based on the external flow velocity and the momentum thickness. Eight typical cases are selected for numerical investigation under the guidance of the monoharmonic analysis. The instantaneous flow fields exhibit the traveling wavy motion of the compliant wall, and the frequency-wavenumber power spectrum of wall pressure fluctuation is computed to quantify the mutual influence of the wall compliance and the turbulent flow at different wave numbers. It is shown that the Reynolds shear stress and the pressure fluctuation are generally enhanced by the wall compliance with the parameters considered in the present study. A dynamical decomposition of the skin-friction coefficient is derived, and a new term (CW) appears due to the wall-induced Reynolds shear stress. The influence of the anisotropic compliant wall motion on the turbulent boundary layer through the wall-induced negative Reynolds shear stress is discussed. To elucidate the underlying mechanism, the budget analysis of the Reynolds stresses transportation is further carried out. The impact of the wall compliance on the turbulent flow is disclosed by examining the variations of the diffusion and velocity-pressure correlation terms. It is shown that increase of the Reynolds stresses inside the flow domain is caused by enhancement of the velocity-pressure correlation term, possibly through the long-range influence of the wall compliance on the pressure field, rather than diffusion of the wall-induced Reynolds shear stress into the fluid flow. 展开更多

A new second-order moment model for turbulent combustion is applied in the simulation of methane-air turbulent jet flame. The predicted results are compared with the experimental results and with those predicted using the well-known EBU-Arrhenius model and the original second-order moment model. The comparison shows the advantage of the new model that it requires almost the same computational storage and time as that of the original second-order moment model, but its modeling results are in better agreement with experiments than those using other models. Hence, the new second-order moment model is promising in modeling turbulent combustion with NOx formation with finite reaction rate for engineering application. 展开更多

A numerical method was developed to directly simulate the compressible, particle-laden turbulent jets. The fourth order compact finite difference schemes were used to discretize the space derivatives. The Lagrangian method was adopted to simulate the particle motion based on one-way coupling. It is found that the turbulent intensity profiles attain self-similar status in the jet downstream regions. At the Stokes number of 1, particles are concentrated largely in the outer boundaries of the large-scale vortex structures with the most uneven distribution and the widest dispersion in the lateral direction. Particles at the much smaller Stokes numbers are distributed evenly in the flow field, and the lateral dispersion is also considerable. Distribution of particles at much larger Stokes numbers is more uniform and the lateral dispersion becomes small. In addition, the inflow conditions have different effects on the particle dispersion. The direct numerical simulation (DNS) results accord with the previous experiments and numerical studies. 展开更多

Our previous experimental studies have confirmed that viscoelastic-fluid-based nanofluid(VFBN) prepared by suspending nanoparticles in a viscoelastic base fluid(VBF, behaves drag reduction at turbulent flow state) can reduce turbulent flow resistance as compared with water and enhance heat transfer as compared with VBF. Direct numerical simulation(DNS) is performed in this study to explore the mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement(HTE) and flow drag reduction(DR) for the VFBN turbulent flow. The Giesekus model is used as the constitutive equation for VFBN. Our previously proposed thermal dispersion model is adopted to take into account the thermal dispersion effects of nanoparticles in the VFBN turbulent flow. The DNS results show similar behaviors for flow resistance and heat transfer to those obtained in our previous experiments. Detailed analyses are conducted for the turbulent velocity, temperature, and conformation fields obtained by DNSs for different fluid cases, and for the friction factor with viscous, turbulent, and elastic contributions and heat transfer rate with conductive, turbulent and thermal dispersion contributions of nanoparticles, respectively. The mechanisms of HTE and DR of VFBN turbulent flows are then discussed. Based on analogy theory, the ratios of Chilton–Colburn factor to friction factor for different fluid flow cases are investigated, which from another aspect show the significant enhancement in heat transfer performance for some cases of water-based nanofluid and VFBN turbulent flows. 展开更多

Because of the complication of turbulence's mechanism and law as well as the jet pressure in nozzle is difficult to test by experiment, five turbulent models were applied to numerically simulate the turbulent flow field in convergent-divergent nozzle. Theory analysis and experiment results of mass flow rates conclude that the RNG k-ε model is the most suitable model. The pressure distribution in the convergent-divergent nozzle was revealed by computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulating on the turbulent flow field under different pressure conditions. The growing conditions of cavitation bubbles were shown; meanwhile, the phenomena in the experiment could be explained. The turbulent properties of the fiber suspension in a turbulent round jet are numerically simulated and visualized, and some of the results are compared with the experimental data. The effects of the Reynolds number, fiber volume fraction, and aspect ratio are analyzed. The results show that the fiber injection in the flow has a delay effect on the streamwise velocity decay along the jet axis, and such an effect becomes more obvious with the increases in the fiber volume fraction and aspect ratio and the decrease in the Reynolds number. The flow with fibers shows an increase in the streamwise velocity along the radial direction, and the increase magnitude is directly proportional to the fiber volume fraction and aspect ratio and inversely proportional to the Reynolds number. The presence of fibers makes the turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stress increase, and the extent increases with the fiber volume fraction, Reynolds number, and fiber aspect ratio. 展开更多

A three-dimension full-size numerical simulation of the effect of air distribution on turbulent flow and combustion in a tubular heating furnace was carried out. A standard k –ε turbulent model, a simplified PDF combustion model and a discrete ordinate transfer radiation model were used. The hybrid grid combining a structured and a non-structured grid was generated without any simplification of the complicated geometric configuration around the burner. It was found that the multistage combustion could reduce and control the peak value of temperature. At the same time, it was concluded that the amount of primary air had little effect on the global distribution of velocity and temperature in the furnace, but a great effect on that around the burner. It is recommended that 45% - 65% of the total amount of air be taken in in primary air inlets in the furnace. All the results are important to optimize the combustion progress. 展开更多

This pollution often comes from the reactions of combustion. To optimize these reactions and to minimize pollution, turbulence is a funda- mental tool. Based on the Fourier–Chebyshev spectral method, the control of turbulent channel flow by space-dependent electromagnetic force and the mechanism of drag reduction are investigated with direct numerical simulation(DNS) methods for different Reynolds numbers. A formula is derived to express the relation between fluctuating velocities and the friction drag coefficient. With the application of electromagnetic force, the in-depth relations among the fluctuating velocities near the wall, Reynolds stress, and the effect of drag reduction for different Reynolds numbers are discussed. The results indicate that the maximum drag reductions can be obtained with an optimal combination of parameters for each case of different Reynolds numbers. The fluctuating velocities along the streamwise and normal directions are suppressed significantly, while the fluctuating velocity along the spanwise direction is enhanced dramatically due to the spanwise electromagnetic force. However, the values of Reynolds stress depend on the fluctuating velocities along the streamwise and normal directions rather than that along the spanwise direction. Therefore, the significant effect of drag reduction is obtained. Moreover, the maximum drag reduction is weakened due to the decay of control effect for fluctuating velocities as the Reynolds number increases. 展开更多

Turbulence is a fundamentally interesting physical phenomenon which is of fundamental interest. The paper presents the results of numerical modeling of hot spot growth process in detonation with account for turbulent mixing. The performed investigation has shown that large-scale HE (High explosives) particles mix up and split down to smaller sizes in the result of shock wave impact, instability development on the HE-EP (Explosion product) interface and vortex flow; at these sizes, due to the developed surface of the HE-EP contact, HE has enough time to get heated (energy transfer from EP), and the decomposition reaction effectively continues. Numerical modeling make the calculation of the hot spot growth rate (about 100-200 m/s) possible. This has proved the hypothesis saying that at mechanical material transport the turbulence in the reaction zone plays an important role and it must be taken into account in the detonation theory. 展开更多

The paper presents the k-ε model equations of turbulence with a single set of constants chosen by the authors, which is appropriate to simulate a wide range of turbulent flows. The model validation has been performed for a number of flows and its main results are given in the paper. The turbulent mixing of flow with shear in the tangential velocity component is discussed in details. An analytical solution to the system of ordinary differential equations of the k-ε model of turbulent mixing has been found for the self-similar regime of flow. The model coefficients were chosen using simulation results for some simplest turbulent flows. The solution can be used for the verification of codes. The numerical simulation of the problem has been performed by the 2D code EGAK using this model. A good agreement of the numerical simulation results with the self-similar solution, 3D DNS results and known experimental data has been achieved. This allows stating that the k-ε model constants chosen by the authors are acceptable for the considered flow. 展开更多

ABE-KONDOH-NAGANO,ABID,YANG-SHIH and LAUNDER-SHARMA low-Reynolds number turbulence models were applied to simulating unsteady turbulence flow around a square cylinder in different phases flow field and time-averaged unsteady flow field.Meanwhile, drag and lift coefficients of the four different low-Reynolds number turbulence models were analyzed. The simulated results of YANG-SHIH model are close to the large eddy simulation results and experimental results, and they are significantly better than those of ABE-KONDOH-NAGANO,ABID and LAUNDER-SHARMR models. The modification of the generation of turbulence kinetic energy is the key factor to a successful simulation for YANG-SHIH model, while the correction of the turbulence near the wall has minor influence on the simulation results. For ABE-KONDOH-NAGANO,ABID and LAUNDER-SHARMA models satisfactory simulation results cannot be obtained due to lack of the modification of the generation of turbulence kinetic energy. With the joint force of wall function and the turbulence models with the adoption of corrected swirl stream, flow around a square cylinder can be fully simulated with less grids by the near-wall. 展开更多
