Spray combustion is widely used in power, transportation, chemical and metallurgical, iron and steel making, aeronautical and astronautical engineering. In recent years, large-eddy simulation (LES) becomes more and more attractive, because it can give the instantaneous flow and flame structures, and may give more accurate statistical results than the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) modeling. In this paper, the present status of the studies on LES of spray combustion is reviewed, and the future research needs are discussed. 展开更多

In order to optimize the design of the submerged combustion vaporizer(SCV), an experimental apparatus was set up to investigate the heat transfer character outside the tube bundle in SCV. Several experiments were conducted using water and CO_2 as the heat transfer media in the tubes, respectively. The results indicated that hot air flux, the initial liquid level height and the tube pitch ratio had great influence on the heat transfer coefficient outside the tube bundle(ho). Finally, the air flux associated factor β and height associated factor γ were introduced to propose a new hocorrelation. After verified by experiments using cold water, high pressure CO_2 and liquid N_2 as heat transfer media, respectively, it was found that the biggest deviation between the predicted and the experimental values was less than 25%. 展开更多

The calculation of spray and combustion in diesel engines is described by using the softwares FIRE and BOOST. The application of the resulting computational method to the simulation of fuel spray and breakup, mixture formation and combustion in a heavy duty diesel is presented. According to detailed insight into the governing processes provided by the simulation results, various aspects of the dependence of the spray propagation and combustion on the chamber geometry and spray angle are discussed. Then, global cylinderaveraged pressure traces are extracted from the space and time resolved field quantities and compared to incylinder pressure measurements. Finally, an optimized configuration of the chamber geometry and spray angle with a new injection rate of higher injection pressure is proposed. 展开更多

Large-eddy simulation of spray combustion is under its rapid development.Different combustion models were used by different investigators. However, these models are less validated by detailed experimental data.In this paper,large-eddy simulation(LES)of ethanol spray-air combustion was made using an Eulerian-Lagrangian approach,a subgrid-scale kinetic energy stress model, and a filtered finite-rate combustion model, neglecting the sub-grid scale reaction rate. The simulation results are compared with experimental dada in the literature and validated in detail. The LES obtained statistically averaged gas temperature is in much better agreement with the experimental results than Reynolds averaged(RANS)modeling using the most complex probability density function(PDF)equation combustion model. The instantaneous LES results show the coherent structures of the shear region near the high-temperature flame zone and the fuel vapor concentration map, indicating that the droplets are concentrated in this shear region. The instantaneous temperature, oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration maps show the close interaction between the coherent structures and the combustion reaction. 展开更多

To improve the combustion chamber shape that can decrease the directed injection (DI) diesel emission, the theories of DI diesel spray, combustion and pollutant formation model are analysed and implemented based on the CFD code FIRE. Results show that the chamber with contracting orifice can get stronger squish swirl intensity. The results of the verification studies show a good accordance with the measurements and reveal that the individual processes of spray, evolution, combustion and pollutant formation are well captured in FIRE. Finally, based on the analyzing and comparing of the calculation results of different chambers, a combustion chamber of contracting orifice geometry with lower emission is proposed. 展开更多

In the present study a modified CFD code KIVA3V was used to simulate the spray combustion in a small DI diesel engine fueled with DME. The improved spray models consider more spray phenomena such as cavitation flow in nozzle hole, jet atomization, droplet second breakup and spray wall interaction. Otherwise, a reduced DME reaction mechanism is implemented in the combustion model, and a new turbulent combustion model?Partial Stirred Reactor (PaSR) model is selected to simulate the spray combustion process, the effects of turbulent mixing on the reaction rate are considered. The results of engine modeling based on those models agreed well with the experimental measurements. Study of temperature fields variation and particle traces in the combustion chamber revealed that the engine combustion system originally used for diesel fuel must be optimized for DME. 展开更多

The Lagrangian DDM (discrete droplet model) is state-of-the-art for CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations of mixture formation and combustion in industrial engines. A commonly known drawback of the DDM approach is the attenuated validity in the dense spray, where the bulk liquid disintegrates into droplets. There the assumption of single droplets surrounded by a homogenous gas field is not reasonable. In this region, the Eulerian-Eulerian multi-phase approach performs better because instead of parcels the spray is represented by the volume fractions of one bulk liquid and several droplet size class phases. A further drawback of the DDM approach is that increasing the spatial resolution of the computational grid leads to a reduced statistical convergence, since the number of spray parcels per computational cell becomes smaller. It is desirable to combine the benefits of both spray approaches in coupled CFD simulations. Therefore, the dense spray region is simulated separately with the Eulerian spray approach on a highly resolved mesh covering only the region close to the nozzle orifice. The entire engine domain with combustion and emission models is simulated with the Eulerian-Lagrangian spray approach for the dilute spray region. The two simulations are coupled through exchange of boundary conditions and model source terms. An on-line coupling interface manages the data transfer between the two simulation clients, i.e., Eulerian spray and engine client. The aim of this work is to extend the coupled spray approach in terms of exchanging combustion related heat and species sources, and consequently creating the link between Eulerian spray and combustion models. The results show mixture formation and combustion in real-case engine simulations, and demonstrate the feasibility of spray model combination in engineering applications. 展开更多

The relationship between the diameter of the misted droplets and the spray pressure was determined. Based on the theory of the relative velocity, the two-phase flow mode of the spray chamber and the efficiency equation for heat and moisture exchange were established. Corrections were carried out for the efficiency equation with spray pressure of 157 kPa. The results show that the pressure plays an important part in determining the efficiency of heat and moisture exchange. When the spray pressure is less than 157 kPa,better coincidence is noticed between the theoretical analysis and the test results with the error less than 6%. Greater error will be resulted in the case when the spray pressure is beyond 157 kPa. After the correction treatment, the coincidence between the theoretical and the experimental results is greatly improved. 展开更多

A new generation conical spray system for conventional diesel engines or premixed combustion diesel engines is introduced. By means of oriented impingement method, flexible spray penetration in design is realized. High-speed photograph was used to investigate the spatial distribution characteristics of the new spray for cases of different impingement angles and needle valve opening pressures. The results show that, by applying spray impingement orientation, fuel jets spread along the cone surface as shape of sectors, so the dispersion of jets is increased obviously. Changing on impingement angle leads to variation of penetration, which is critical in homogeneous mixture preparation. Due to the flexibility of spray penetration in design, the spray impingement on liner is avoided in a great extent. The results also indicate that higher needle valve opening pressure results in longer penetration and larger spray angle after impingement. Combustion characteristics of the impinged conical spray were studied in the 1135 type diesel engine. The new impinged conical spray system work smoothly in full load range with better fuel economy and lower emissions of NOx and soot than the original test engine. 展开更多

This review examines the potential of hydrogen, ammonia, and biodiesel as alternative fuels, focusing on spray dynamics, droplet evaporation, combustion, and emissions.Hydrogen offers superior combustion characteristics but faces challenges in NO_(x)emissions.Strategies like nonpremixed direct injection, increased intake boost pressure, and low-pressure EGR are suggested for robust hydrogen combustion in compression-ignition engines.Control of hydrogen start of injection(SOI)and water injection(WI)are identified as effective techniques for reducing NO_(x)emissions.Ammonia shows inferior combustion and higher NO_(x)and unburned NH_(3)emissions in the same conditions as conventional fuels with conventional engines.Understanding ammonia spray and evaporation conditions is significant for optimizing an ammonia-air mixture and minimizing wall impingement and ammonia trap in the crevice, thereby improving combustion and emission reduction.Increasing intake pressure, injection pressure, and EGR rate, employing a turbulent jet,and preheating ammonia improve efficiency and reduce NO_(x)emissions.Utilizing ammonia combustion requires the implementation of after-treatment systems such as NH_(3)adsorber and De NO_(x)catalysts to mitigate unburned NH_(3)and NO_(x)emissions.Biodiesel affects the fuel supply system, combustion, and emission characteristics according to its viscosity and density.Increasing injection pressure and blending with volatile fuels enhance spray and combustion.Optimum biodiesel preheating temperatures for the injection pump and injector are crucial for achieving the best pump capacity and spray formation.By utilizing biodiesel-PODE blends and investigating low-temperature biodiesel combustions, there is potential to improve thermal efficiency and PMNO_(x)trade-off.Therefore,carbon-neutral fuel adoption should be accelerated to mitigate CO_(2)emissions,highlighting the importance of combustion techniques and emissions reduction strategies. 展开更多

In order to improve the performance of the rotary engine, this paper has designed a new type of dual-pit rotary engine combustion chamber structure, and compares the combustion and emission characteristics with the rotary engine with a traditional combustion chamber. The existence of the dual-pit combustion chamber strengthens the overall vortex intensity in the cylinder, effectively promotes the mixing process of fuel and air in the cylinder, the maximum combustion pressure in the cylinder increased by 8.6%,significantly increases the diffusion combustion speed, and significantly improves the dynamic performance of the rotary engine. On this basis, the effects of fuel injection timing parameters on fuel distribution, combustion and emission characteristics were studied.Fuel distribution is more even and dispersed during injection in the later stage of compression. When the fuel injection timing was 105°BTDC in the middle of the compression phase, the matching effect of fuel distribution law and ignition scheme was the best. When the injection timing was 75°BTDC and 85°BTDC in the late compression stage, the mass fraction of NOx remained at a low level. The correlation between soot generation and the change of fuel injection timing was weak. When the injection time was 85°BTDC,the soot generation remained at a relatively high level. 展开更多

Turbulent two-phase combustion is widely encountered in spray and pulverized-coal combustors, and large-eddy simulation(LES)becomes a powerful CFD method for its simulation, because LES can give unsteady flame structures and more reasonable statistical results than Reynolds-averaged modeling.Present combustion models in LES either lack of generality or are computationally too expensive.A statistical moment model based on the idea of turbulence modeling called“second-order moment(SOM)combustion model”was developed by the present authors for LES of two-phase combustion. In this paper,a review is given on our published research results for SOM-LES of two-phase combustion, including the description of the SOM-LES model, its application, validation of statistical results by experiments,as well as the phenomena obtained by instantaneous results. 展开更多

A SUE (sudden expansion) combustor is analyzed using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) methods. Corresponding CO and NOx emissions are computed for various operating conditions of the SUE combustor with a can type geometrical configuration. The goal of this work is to see if the SUE combustor is a viable alternative to conventional combustors which utilize swirlers. It is found the can type combustor's NOx emissions are quite low compared to other combustor types but the CO emissions are fairly high. Emissions can be improved by providing better mixing of the fuel and oxidizer in the primary combustion zone. The SUE combustor design needs to be further refined in order for it to be a viable alternative to conventional combustors with swirters. 展开更多

Compact flame-holders for afterburners are an increasing requirement for modern aero engines.However,flame-holder design is non-trivial since high inlet temperatures, velocities, and elaborate structures induce complex turbulence, combustion, and spray coupling in modern afterburners. In this work, the LES-pdf and stochastic fields-Lagrangian particle spray methods are used to investigate methane and aviation kerosene combustion structures formed by new-type concave flame-holders.The flow pattern, combustion mode, and flame structure of gaseous and liquid fuel around a concave flame-holder are analyzed, discussed, and compared with experimental results. Results reveal that the flame stability of a concave flame-holder is better than that of the non-concave one.Furthermore, when using liquid fuel, the concave flame-holder forms a stable and compact flame. These results suggest concave flame-holders are a promising design for compact afterburners. 展开更多

The internal combustion engine (ICE) is an attractive power source for automobiles, with its superior storability, transportability, and suppliability of liquid fuel with high energy density. Compact ICEs with high performance and a low environmental load are greatly needed. In the future, smart active control of combustion by means of fuel spray injection must be considered as a breakthrough technology to address serious issues related to conventional ICEs, such as emissions. A designed fuel injection rate and spray pattern during the injection period have been technically developed, and combustion can be partially controlled in the conventional ICE. However, spatial fuel distribution is not progressing as desired in the field of combustion;thus, new and effective active control technologies for fuel spray are very necessary for the smart control of combustion. Cavitation, flash boiling, spray-to-spray interaction, spray-to-wall interaction, and air flow have potential as a basis for active attitude control of fuel spray. This article uses evidence from the literature to discuss the possibility of active spray attitude control for future fuel spray combustion technology in a smart compact ICE. 展开更多

The structure of the trapped-vortex cavity and radial flameholder can maintain stable combustion under severe conditions, such as sub-atmospheric pressure and high inlet velocity. This article reports a complete study of combustion characteristics for this design. The flow field of the physical model was obtained by numerical simulation. The pilot combustion characteristics, including the combustion process, combustion efficiency, and wall temperature distribution, were studied by experiments. The pilot combustion can be divided into three modes under different fuel flow rates and inlet conditions. In“cavity maintained(CM)”mode, pilot flame exists at both sides of the cavity zone, rotating with the main vortex.In“cavity-flameholder maintained(CFM)”mode, the combustion process occurs both inside the cavity and behind the flameholder. While in“flameholder maintained(FM)”mode, the cavity will quench, and the combustion is maintained by the radial flameholder only.Due to the difference in the flow field, the flame pattern and propagation direction vary under different combustion modes. The combustion efficiency, influenced by combustion modes, shows an increase-decrease-increase curve. The wall temperature distribution is also affected;the cavity wall temperature decreases under large fuel flux while the temperature of the burner-back plate continues to rise to a maximum value. 展开更多

Biofuels have extensive available resources and have an immense potential as promising alternative fuels for automobile. The application advantages of biofuels are mainly reflected as particulate matter(PM)reduction, carbon neutral, greenhouse gases reduction, waste utilization, energy and economic security, and fuel pluralism.Based on the understanding of molecular structure effects of biofuels on soot formation and particles morphology, the effects of alcohols, ethers, esters and biodiesel on spray and combustion process in constant volume bomb in recent years are retrospectively analyzed in this paper. For the mixture, macromolecular ester fuels and polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether(PODE)are conducive to the improvement of liquid spray, while biodiesel, small molecules, dimethyl ether(DME)and alcohols are reversed.Alcohols are advantageous to the extension of mixing time and the increasing of vapor-phase mixture.Through the influence integrated assessment, alcohols show the best performance on the spray, atomization and combustion, while biodiesels show the worst. But in terms of combustion,PODE is the best choice without considering spray and atomization. For binary alternative-diesel fuel blends, methanol or butanol is the best additive based on synthetically considerations on spray, atomization and combustion. To meet the requirements of the fuel application of diesel engine, ternary fuel or even quaternary fuel have been proposed and explored. This review can help to form a systematic understanding on fuel recombining and obtain the guide of clean and efficient fuel formulation for diesel engine. 展开更多

Numerical simulation is applied to detail the combustion characteristics of n-decane sprays in highly compressible vortices formed in a supersonic mixing layer. The multi-phase reacting flow is modeled, in which the shear flow is solved Eulerianly by means of direct numerical simulation, and the motions of individual sub-grid point-mass fuel droplets are tracked Lagrangianly.Spray combustion behaviors are studied under different ambient pressures. Results indicate that ignition kernels are formed at high-strain vortex braids, where the scalar dissipation rates are high. The flame kernels are then strongly strained, associated with the rotation of the shearing vortex, and propagate to envelop the local vortex. It is observed that the flammable mixtures entrained in the vortex are burned from the edge to the core of the vortex until the reactants are completely consumed. As the ambient pressure increases, the high-temperature region expands so that the behaviors of spray flames are strongly changed. An overall analysis of the combustion field indicates that the time-averaged temperature increases, and the fluctuating pressure decreases, resulting in a more stable spray combustion under higher pressures, primarily due to the acceleration of the chemical reaction. 展开更多
