Predicting distant metastasis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma using gradient boosting tree model based on detailed magnetic resonance imaging reports

BACKGROUND Development of distant metastasis(DM)is a major concern during treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC).However,studies have demonstrated im-proved distant control and survival in patients with advanced NPC with the addition of chemotherapy to concomitant chemoradiotherapy.Therefore,precise prediction of metastasis in patients with NPC is crucial.AIM To develop a predictive model for metastasis in NPC using detailed magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)reports.METHODS This retrospective study included 792 patients with non-distant metastatic NPC.A total of 469 imaging variables were obtained from detailed MRI reports.Data were stratified and randomly split into training(50%)and testing sets.Gradient boosting tree(GBT)models were built and used to select variables for predicting DM.A full model comprising all variables and a reduced model with the top-five variables were built.Model performance was assessed by area under the curve(AUC).RESULTS Among the 792 patients,94 developed DM during follow-up.The number of metastatic cervical nodes(30.9%),tumor invasion in the posterior half of the nasal cavity(9.7%),two sides of the pharyngeal recess(6.2%),tubal torus(3.3%),and single side of the parapharyngeal space(2.7%)were the top-five contributors for predicting DM,based on their relative importance in GBT models.The testing AUC of the full model was 0.75(95%confidence interval[CI]:0.69-0.82).The testing AUC of the reduced model was 0.75(95%CI:0.68-0.82).For the whole dataset,the full(AUC=0.76,95%CI:0.72-0.82)and reduced models(AUC=0.76,95%CI:0.71-0.81)outperformed the tumor node-staging system(AUC=0.67,95%CI:0.61-0.73).CONCLUSION The GBT model outperformed the tumor node-staging system in predicting metastasis in NPC.The number of metastatic cervical nodes was identified as the principal contributing variable. 展开更多

Background For static scenes with multiple depth layers,existing defocused image deblurring methods have the problems of edge-ringing artifacts or insufficient deblurring owing to inaccurate estimation of the blur amount,and prior knowledge in nonblind deconvolution is not strong,which leads to image detail recovery challenges.Methods To this end,this study proposes a blur map estimation method for defocused images based on the gradient difference of the boundary neighborhood,which uses the gradient difference of the boundary neighborhood to accurately obtain the amount of blurring,thereby preventing boundary ringing artifacts.The obtained blur map is then used for blur detection to determine whether the image needs to be deblurred,thereby improving the efficiency of deblurring without manual intervention and judgment.Finally,a nonblind deconvolution algorithm was designed to achieve image deblurring based on the blur amount selection strategy and sparse prior.Results Experimental results showed that our method improves PSNR(Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio)and SSIM(Structural Similarity Index)by an average of 4.6%and 7.3%,respectively,compared to existing methods.Conclusions Experimental results showed that the proposed method outperforms existing methods.Compared to existing methods,our method can better solve the problems of boundary ringing artifacts and detail information preservation in defocused image deblurring. 展开更多

A multiple-image encryption method based on two-step phase-shifting interferometry (PSI) and spatial multiplexing of a smooth compressed signal is proposed. In the encoding and encryption process, with the help of four index matrices to store original pixel positions, all the pixels of four secret images are firstly reordered in an ascending order; then, the four reordered images are transformed by five-order Haar wavelet transform and performed sparseness operation. After Arnold transform and pixels sampling operation, one combined image can be grouped with the aid of compressive sensing (CS) and spatial multiplexing techniques. Finally, putting the combined image at the input plane of the PSI encryption scheme, only two interferograms ciphertexts can be obtained. During the decoding and decryption, utilizing all the secret key groups and index matrices keys, all the original secret images can be successfully decrypted by a wave-front retrieval algorithm of two-step PSI, spatial de-multiplexing, inverse Arnold transform, inverse discrete wavelet transform, and pixels reordering operation. 展开更多

In order to choose proper parameters, the selection criteria were analyzed theoretically, and a simple scheme to demonstrate its validity was adopted experimentally. To make fair comparisons of performances of three models, the same numerical algorithm was used to solve partial differential equations. Both the international standard test image on Lena and HR image of CBERS-02B of Dalian city were used to verify the performance of the model. Experimental results illustrate that the new model not only preserved the edge and important details but also alleviated the staircase effect effectively. 展开更多

Perceptual image quality assessment(IQA)is one of the most indispensable yet challenging problems in image processing and computer vision.It is quite necessary to develop automatic and efficient approaches that can accurately predict perceptual image quality consistently with human subjective evaluation.To further improve the prediction accuracy for the distortion of color images,in this paper,we propose a novel effective and efficient IQA model,called perceptual gradient similarity deviation(PGSD).Based on the gradient magnitude similarity,we proposed a gradient direction selection method to automatically determine the pixel-wise perceptual gradient.The luminance and chrominance channels are both took into account to characterize the quality degradation caused by intensity and color distortions.Finally,a multi-scale strategy is utilized and pooled with different weights to incorporate image details at different resolutions.Experimental results on LIVE,CSIQ and TID2013 databases demonstrate the superior performances of the proposed algorithm. 展开更多

At present,underwater terrain images are all strip-shaped small fragment images preprocessed by the side-scan sonar imaging system.However,the processed underwater terrain images have inconspicuous and few feature points.In order to better realize the stitching of underwater terrain images and solve the problems of slow traditional image stitching speed,we proposed an improved algorithm for underwater terrain image stitching based on spatial gradient feature block.First,the spatial gradient fuzzy C-Means algorithm is used to divide the underwater terrain image into feature blocks with the fusion of spatial gradient information.The accelerated-KAZE(AKAZE)algorithm is used to combine the feature block information to match the reference image and the target image.Then,the random sample consensus(RANSAC)is applied to optimize the matching results.Finally,image fusion is performed with the global homography and the optimal seam-line method to improve the accuracy of image overlay fusion.The experimental results show that the proposed method in this paper effectively divides images into feature blocks by combining spatial information and gradient information,which not only solves the problem of stitching failure of underwater terrain images due to unobvious features,and further reduces the sensitivity to noise,but also effectively reduces the iterative calculation in the feature point matching process of the traditional method,and improves the stitching speed.Ghosting and shape warping are significantly eliminated by re-optimizing the overlap of the image. 展开更多

In this paper, we propose a fast centerline extraction method to be used for gradient and direction vector flow of active contours. The gradient and direction vector flow is a recently reported active contour model capable of significantly improving the image segmentation performance especially for complex object shape, by seamlessly integrating gradient vector flow and prior directional information. Since the prior directional information is provided by manual line drawing, it can be inconvenient for inexperienced users who might have difficulty in finding the best place to draw the directional lines to achieve the best segmentation performance. This paper describes a method to overcome this problem by automatically extracting centerlines to guide the users for providing the right directional information. Experimental results on synthetic and real images demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. 展开更多

Curvature-driven diffusion (CDD) principles were used to develop a novel gradient based image restora- tion algorithm. The algorithm fills in blocks of missing data in a wireless image after transmission through the network. When images are transmitted over fading channels, especially in the severe circum- stances of a coal mine, blocks of the image may be destroyed by the effects of noise. Instead of using com- mon retransmission query protocols the lost data is reconstructed by using the adaptive curvature-driven diffusion (ACDD) image restoration algorithm in the gradient domain of the destroyed image. Missing blocks are restored by the method in two steps: In step one, the missing blocks are filled in the gradient domain by the ACDD algorithm; in step two, and the image is reconstructed from the reformed gradients by solving a Poisson equation. The proposed method eliminates the staircase effect and accelerates the convergence rate. This is demonstrated by experimental results. 展开更多

As an important part of water level warning in water conservancy projects,often due to the influence of environmental factors such as light and stains,the acquired water gauge images have sticky,broken and bright spot conditions,which affect the identification of water gauges.To solve this problem,a water gauge image denoising model based on improved adaptive total variation is proposed.Firstly,the regular term exponent in the adaptive total variational equation is changed to an inverse cosine function;secondly,the differential curvature is used to distinguish the image noise points and increase the smoothing strength at the noise points;finally,according to the characteristics of the gradient mode and adaptive gradient threshold after Gaussian filtering,the New model can adaptively denoise in the smooth area and protect the edge area,so as to have the characteristics of both edge-preserving denoising.The experimental results show that the new model has a great improvement in image vision,higher iteration efficiency and an average increase of 1.6 dB in peak signal-to-noise ratio,and an average increase of 9%in structural similarity,which is more beneficial to practical applications. 展开更多

This paper designs a 3 mm radiometer and validate with experiments based on the principle of passive millimeter wave (PMMW) imaging. The poor spatial resolution, which is limited by antenna size, should be improved by post data processing. A conjugate-gradient (CG) algorithm is adopted to circumvent this drawback. Simulation and real data collected in laboratory environment are given, and the results show that the CG algorithm improves the spatial resolution and convergent rate. Further, it can reduce the ringing effects which are caused by regularizing the image restoration. Thus, the CG algorithm is easily implemented for PMMW imaging. 展开更多

Recently,ground-penetrating radar(GPR)has been extended as a well-known area to investigate the subsurface objects.However,its output has a low resolution,and it needs more processing for more interpretation.This paper presents two algorithms for landmine detection from GPR images.The first algorithm depends on a multi-scale technique.A Gaussian kernel with a particular scale is convolved with the image,and after that,two gradients are estimated;horizontal and vertical gradients.Then,histogram and cumulative histogram are estimated for the overall gradient image.The bin values on the cumulative histogram are used for discrimination between images with and without landmines.Moreover,a neural classifier is used to classify images with cumulative histograms as feature vectors.The second algorithm is based on scale-space analysis with the number of speeded-up robust feature(SURF)points as the key parameter for classification.In addition,this paper presents a framework for size reduction of GPR images based on decimation for efficient storage.The further classification steps can be performed on images after interpolation.The sensitivity of classification accuracy to the interpolation process is studied in detail. 展开更多

Image fusion based on the sparse representation(SR)has become the primary research direction of the transform domain method.However,the SR-based image fusion algorithm has the characteristics of high computational complexity and neglecting the local features of an image,resulting in limited image detail retention and a high registration misalignment sensitivity.In order to overcome these shortcomings and the noise existing in the image of the fusion process,this paper proposes a new signal decomposition model,namely the multi-source image fusion algorithm of the gradient regularization convolution SR(CSR).The main innovation of this work is using the sparse optimization function to perform two-scale decomposition of the source image to obtain high-frequency components and low-frequency components.The sparse coefficient is obtained by the gradient regularization CSR model,and the sparse coefficient is taken as the maximum value to get the optimal high frequency component of the fused image.The best low frequency component is obtained by using the fusion strategy of the extreme or the average value.The final fused image is obtained by adding two optimal components.Experimental results demonstrate that this method greatly improves the ability to maintain image details and reduces image registration sensitivity. 展开更多

This paper presents a corner-based image alignment algorithm based on the procedures of corner-based template matching and geometric parameter estimation. This algorithm consists of two stages: 1) training phase, and 2) matching phase. In the training phase, a corner detection algorithm is used to extract the corners. These corners are then used to build the pyramid images. In the matching phase, the corners are obtained using the same corner detection algorithm. The similarity measure is then determined by the differences of gradient vector between the corners obtained in the template image and the inspection image, respectively. A parabolic function is further applied to evaluate the geometric relationship between the template and the inspection images. Results show that the corner-based template matching outperforms the original edge-based template matching in efficiency, and both of them are robust against non-liner light changes. The accuracy and precision of the corner-based image alignment are competitive to that of edge-based image alignment under the same environment. In practice, the proposed algorithm demonstrates its precision, efficiency and robustness in image alignment for real world applications. 展开更多

A survey of the population densities of rice planthoppers is important for forecasting decisions and efficient control. Tra- ditional manual surveying of rice planthoppers is time-consuming, fatiguing, and subjective. A new three-layer detection method was proposed to detect and identify white-backed planthoppers (WBPHs, Sogatella furcifera (Horvath)) and their developmental stages using image processing. In the first two detection layers, we used an AdaBoost classifier that was trained on a histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) features and a support vector machine (SVM) classifier that was trained on Gabor and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) features to detect WBPHs and remove impurities. We achieved a detection rate of 85.6% and a false detection rate of 10.2%. In the third detection layer, a SVM classifier that was trained on the HOG features was used to identify the different developmental stages of the WBPHs, and we achieved an identification rate of 73.1%, a false identification rate of 23.3%, and a 5.6% false detection rate for the images without WBPHs. The proposed three-layer detection method is feasible and effective for the identification of different developmental stages of planthoppers on rice plants in paddy fields. 展开更多

A novel algorithm is presented to make the results of image matching more reliable and accurate based on SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform). SIFT algorithm has been identified as the most resistant matching algorithm to common image deformations; however, if there are similar regions in images, SIFT algorithm still generates some analogical descriptors and provides many mismatches. This paper examines the local image descriptor used by SIFT and presents a new algorithm by integrating SIFT with two-dimensional moment invariants and disparity gradient to improve the matching results. In the new algorithm, decision tree is used, and the whole matching process is divided into three levels with different primitives. Matching points are considered as correct ones only when they satisfy all the three similarity measurements. Experiment results demonstrate that the new approach is more reliable and accurate. 展开更多

Image restoration is often solved by minimizing an energy function consisting of a data-fidelity term and a regularization term. A regularized convex term can usually preserve the image edges well in the restored image. In this paper, we consider a class of convex and edge-preserving regularization functions, I.e., multiplicative half-quadratic regularizations, and we use the Newton method to solve the correspondingly reduced systems of nonlinear equations. At each Newton iterate, the preconditioned conjugate gradient method, incorporated with a constraint preconditioner, is employed to solve the structured Newton equation that has a symmetric positive definite coefficient matrix.The igenvalue bounds of the preconditioned matrix are deliberately derived, which can be used to estimate the convergence speed of the preconditioned conjugate gradient method. We use experimental results to demonstrate that this new approach is efficient,and the effect of image restoration is r0easonably well. 展开更多

Significant high magnetic gradient field strength is essential to obtaining high-resolution images in a benchtop mag- netic resonance imaging (BT-MRI) system with permanent magnet. Extending minimum wire spacing and maximum wire width of gradient coils is one of the key solutions to minimize the maximum current density so as to reduce the local heating and generate higher magnetic field gradient strength. However, maximum current density is hard to optimize together with field linearity, stored magnetic energy, and power dissipation by the traditional target field method. In this paper, a new multi-objective method is proposed to optimize the maximum current density, field linearity, stored magnetic energy, and power dissipation in MRI gradient coils. The simulation and experimental results show that the minimum wire spacings are improved by 159% and 62% for the transverse and longitudinal gradient coil respectively. The maximum wire width increases from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm. Maximum gradient field strengths of 157 mT/m and 405 mT/m for transverse and lon- gitudinal coil are achieved, respectively. The experimental results in BT-MRI instrument demonstrate that the MRI images with in-plane resolution of 50 ~tm can be obtained by using the designed coils. 展开更多
