Water jet technology is widely used in submerged buried pipes as a non-traditional trenching process, often invol-ving a complex sediment response. An important adjustable and influential engineering variable in this technol-ogy is represented by the impinging distance. In this study, the FLOW-3D software was used to simulate the jet scouring of sand beds in a submerged environment. In particular, four sets of experimental conditions were con-sidered to discern the relationship between the maximum scour depth and mass and the impinging distance. As shown by the results,a critical impinging distance h0 exists by which the static scour depth can be maximized;the scour mass ratio between dynamic and static conditions decreases as the impinging distance increases. Moreover, the profile contours are similar when the erosion parameter Ec is in the range 0.35<Ec<2.Empirical equations applicable for predicting the jet trenching contour under both dynamic and static scour modes are also provided in this study. 展开更多

An extremely heavy rainfall event lasting from 17 to 22 July 2021 occurred in Henan Province of China, with accumulated precipitation of more than 1000 mm over a 6-day period that exceeded its mean annual precipitation. The present study examines the roles of persistent low-level jets(LLJs) in maintaining the precipitation using surface station observations and reanalysis datasets. The LLJs triggered strong ascending motions and carried moisture mainly from the outflow of Typhoon In-fa(2021). The varying directions of the LLJs well corresponded to the meridional shifts of the rainfall. The precipitation rate reached a maximum during 20-21 July as the LLJs strengthened and expanded vertically into double LLJs, including synoptic-weather-system-related LLJs(SLLJs) at 850–700 hPa and boundary-layer jets(BLJs)at ~950 hPa. The coupling of the SLLJ and BLJ provided strong mid-and low-level convergence on 20 July, whereas the SLLJ produced mid-level divergence at its entrance that coupled with low-level convergence at the terminus of the BLJ on21 July. The formation mechanisms of the two types of LLJs are further examined. The SLLJs and the low-pressure vortex(or inverted trough) varied synchronously as a whole and were affected by the southwestward movement of the WPSH in the rainiest period. The persistent large total pressure gradient force at low levels also maintained the strength of low-level geostrophic winds, thus sustaining the BLJs on the synoptic scale. The results based on a Du-Rotunno 1D model show that the Blackadar and Holton mechanisms jointly governed the BLJ dynamics on the diurnal scale. 展开更多

The electrode geometry is the key factor to determine discharge characteristics and film modification of jets. In this paper, we compared the discharge characteristics and the film modifications of atmospheric pressure plasma jets with needle-ring electrode(NRE) and doublering electrode(DRE). The results show that jet with NRE has stronger electric field intensity and higher discharge power, making it present more reactive oxygen particles and higher electron temperature, but its discharge stability is insufficient. In contrast, the jet with DRE has uniform electric field distribution of lower field intensity, which allows it to maintain stable discharge over a wide range of applied voltages. Besides, the modification results show that the treatment efficiency of PET film by NRE is higher than that by DRE. These results provide a suitable atmospheric pressure plasma jets device selection scheme for polymer film processing process. 展开更多

Here,we analyze the characteristics and the formation mechanisms of low-level jets(LLJs)in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River during the 2010 mei-yu season using Wuhan station radiosonde data and the fifth generation of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ERA5)reanalysis dataset. Our results show that the vertical structure of LLJs is characterized by a predominance of boundary layer jets(BLJs)concentrated at heights of 900-1200 m.The BLJs occur most frequently at 2300 LST(LST=UTC+8 hours)but are strongest at 0200 LST,with composite wind velocities>14 m s^(-1).Synoptic-system-related LLJs(SLLJs)occur most frequently at 0800 LST but are strongest at 1100LST,with composite wind velocities>12 m s^(-1).Both BLJs and SLLJs are characterized by a southwesterly wind direction, although the wind direction of SLLJs is more westerly, and northeasterly SLLJs occur more frequently than northeasterly BLJs.When Wuhan is south of the mei-yu front, the westward extension of the northwest Pacific subtropical high intensifies, and the low-pressure system in the eastern Tibetan Plateau strengthens, favoring the formation of LLJs,which are closely related to precipitation. The wind speeds on rainstorm days are greater than those on LLJ days. Our analysis of four typical heavy precipitation events shows the presence of LLJs at the center of the precipitation and on its southern side before the onset of heavy precipitation.BLJs were shown to develop earlier than SLLJs. 展开更多

Jet grouting is one of the most popular soil improvement techniques, but its design usually involves great uncertainties that can lead to economic cost overruns in construction projects. The high dispersion in the properties of the improved material leads to designers assuming a conservative, arbitrary and unjustified strength, which is even sometimes subjected to the results of the test fields. The present paper presents an approach for prediction of the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of jet grouting columns based on the analysis of several machine learning algorithms on a database of 854 results mainly collected from different research papers. The selected machine learning model(extremely randomized trees)relates the soil type and various parameters of the technique to the value of the compressive strength.Despite the complex mechanism that surrounds the jet grouting process, evidenced by the high dispersion and low correlation of the variables studied, the trained model allows to optimally predict the values of compressive strength with a significant improvement with respect to the existing works.Consequently, this work proposes for the first time a reliable and easily applicable approach for estimation of the compressive strength of jet grouting columns. 展开更多

In order to obtain the impact frequency of resonant coal breaking by self-excited oscillation pulsed supercritical carbon dioxide(SC-CO_(2))jet,large eddy simulation was used to analyze the formation and development process of self-excited oscillation pulsed SC-CO_(2)jet,the variation of jet impact frequency in the nozzle and the free flow field, and the variation of jet impact frequency at different positions in the jet axis and under different cavity lengths. The test device of jet impact frequency was developed, and experiments were performed to verify the conclusions of the numerical simulations. The results show that the frequency of the self-excited oscillation pulsed SC-CO_(2)jet is different in the nozzle and the free flow field. In the nozzle, the frequency generated by the fluid disturbance is the same, and the jet frequency at the exit of the nozzle is consistent with that inside the nozzle. In the free flow field, due to the compressibility of CO_(2),the pressure, velocity and other parameters of SC-CO_(2)jets have obvious fluctuation patterns. This feature causes the impact frequency of the self-excited oscillation pulsed SC-CO_(2)jet to decrease gradually in the axis.Changing the cavity length allows the adjustment of the jet impact frequency in the free flow field by affecting the disturbance frequency of the self-excited oscillation pulsed SC-CO_(2)jet inside the nozzle. 展开更多

A submerged cavitation water jet(SCWJ)is an effective method to recycle solid propellant from obsolete solid engines by the breaking method.Solid propellant's breaking modes and mechanical process under SCWJ impact are unclear. This study aims to understand those impact breaking mechanisms. The hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene(HTPB)propellant was chosen as the research material, and a self-designed test system was used to conduct impact tests at four different working pressures. The high-speed camera characterized crack propagation, and the DIC method calculated strain change during the impact process.Besides, micro and macro fracture morphologies were characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM)and computed tomography(CT)scanning. The results reveal that the compressive strain concentration region locates right below the nozzle, and the shear strain region distributes symmetrically with the jet axis, which increases to 4% at first 16th ms,the compressive strain rises to 2% and 6% in the axial and transverse direction, respectively. The two tensile cracks formed first at the compression strain concentrate region, and there generate many shear cracks around the tensile cracks, and those shear cracks that develop and aggregate cause the cracks to become wider and cut through the tensile cracks, forming the tensile-shear cracks and the impact parts eventually fail. The HTPB propellant forms a breaking hole shaped conical after impact 10 s.The mass loss increases by 17 times at maximum, with the working pressure increasing by three times.Meanwhile, the damage value of the breaking hole remaining on the surface increases by 7.8 times while 2.9 times in the depth of the breaking hole. The breaking efficiency is closely affected by working pressures. The failure modes of HTPB impacted by SCWJ are classified as tensile crack-dominated and tensile-shear crack-dominated damage mechanisms. 展开更多

This study examines the diversity of low-level jet(LLJ)formation and related physical processes over southern China.A total of 171 LLJ formation events with enhanced daily southwesterlies and early-morning maximum wind speeds were observed during the mei-yu seasons of 1989–2018.The LLJs can be further categorized into four types based on the increases in the daily mean and diurnal amplitude of the low-level winds.Analysis of the synoptic-scale disturbances shows that the two types of LLJ formation(Q1 and Q4),which feature large increases of daily southerly wind components, are mainly induced by west-east dipole patterns of pressure change,in association with the enhanced southwest vortex and/or the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH).In contrast, the other two types(Q2 and Q3),which feature relatively large increases in their daily westerly components, are related to a northwest-southeast dipole pattern of pressure change due to the mid-latitude trough and the WPSH.We further analyze the considerable variations in the diurnal thermal forcing among the LLJ formation events. The strong(weak)daytime heating of solar radiation leads to relatively large(small)increases in the diurnal amplitude of low-level winds in Q1 and Q2(Q3 and Q4)types.Therefore,different combinations of synopticscale disturbances and diurnal thermal forcings are found to account for the diversity in LLJ formation and associated differences in downstream rainfall patterns. These results help to improve our understanding and prediction of the formation of LLJs. 展开更多

An explanation of the mechanism of generation and acceleration of jets in outer space is given on the basis of experiments in the physics of electrical discharge. The presence of two arms in the spiral Galaxy gives grounds to assume that they have excess charges of the opposite sign. At the moment when the electric field strength between the tips of the arms becomes sufficient, an electrical breakdown occurs, which is accompanied by the movement of the current-plasma leader in the jumper between the tips of the arms. In the head part of the leader there is a flat electric domain of a strong field, which, during its inception, emits intense transverse electromagnetic waves in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the leader’s motion and to the plane of the accretion disk. The electric domain periodically appears and collapses due to the entry of neutral particles. Transverse electromagnetic waves capture charged particles from the discharge region and accelerate them in the direction of wave propagation. The crossed fields of an electromagnetic wave perform the functions of a multistage accelerator. The acceleration of the particles of the plasma produced in the discharge to relativistic energy values in the region of narrow vortex jets occurs under the action of forces caused by the components of the electromagnetic wave fields and the pressure gradient. The charged particles of a vortex jet acquire a significant rotational moment under the action of the Lorentz force. Explanations of the generation of microwave, bremsstrahlung and optical radiation from the region of the jumper between the arms of the Galaxy in the absence of electrical breakdown are also given. 展开更多

I build a toy model in the frame of the jittering jets explosion mechanism(JJEM)of core collapse supernovae that incorporates both the stochastically varying angular momentum component of the material that the newly born neutron star(NS)accretes and the constant angular momentum component, and show that the JJEM can account for the≃2.5–5M⊙mass gap between NSs and black holes(BHs).The random component of the angular momentum results from pre-collapse core convection fluctuations that are amplified by post-collapse instabilities. The fixed angular momentum component results from pre-collapse core rotation. For slowly rotating pre-collapse cores the stochastic angular momentum fluctuations form intermittent accretion disks(or belts)around the NS with varying angular momentum axes in all directions. The intermittent accretion disk/belt launches jets in all directions that expel the core material in all directions early on,hence leaving an NS remnant.Rapidly rotating pre-collapse cores form an accretion disk with angular momentum axis that is about the same as the pre-collapse core rotation. The NS launches jets along this axis and hence the jets avoid the equatorial plane region.Inflowing core material continues to feed the central object from the equatorial plane increasing the NS mass to form a BH.The narrow transition from slow to rapid pre-collapse core rotation,i.e.,from an efficient to inefficient jet feedback mechanism, accounts for the sparsely populated mass gap. 展开更多

Due to the difference in density between the discharge effluent and coastal water, partially treated wastewater is often discharged into the marine environment as a buoyant jet via submarine outfalls with multiport diffusers. The dilution characteristics of effluent discharge(dual buoyant jets)in a wavy cross-flow environment were studied in a laboratory. The planar laser-induced fluorescence technique was used to obtain the concentration data of the jets. The effects of different environmental variables on the diffusion and dilution characteristics of the jets were examined through physical experiments, dimensional analysis, and empirical formulations. It was found that the dilution process of the dual jets could be divided into two components:the original jet component and the effluent cloud component. The jet-to-current velocity ratio was the main parameter affecting the concentration levels of the effluent cloud. The merging of the two jets increased the jet concentration in the flow field. When the jets traveled further downstream, the axial dilution increased gradually and then increased significantly along the axis.Under the effects of strong waves, the concentration contours branched into two peaks, and the mean dilution became more significant than under the effects of weak waves. Therefore, the dilution of the effluent discharge was expected to be significant under strong wave effects because the hydrodynamic force increased.A dilution equation was derived to improve our understanding of the dilution process of buoyant jets in a wavy cross-flow environment. This equation was used to determine the influences of the jet-to-current velocity ratio,wave-to-current velocity ratio, and Strouhal number on the minimum jet dilution. It revealed that the wave and buoyancy effects in effluent discharges were significant. 展开更多

I estimate the frequencies of gravitational waves from jittering jets that explode core collapse supernovae(CCSNe)to crudely be 5–30 Hz,and with strains that might allow detection of Galactic CCSNe.The jittering jets explosion mechanism(JJEM)asserts that most CCSNe are exploded by jittering jets that the newly born neutron star(NS)launches within a few seconds.According to the JJEM,instabilities in the accreted gas lead to the formation of intermittent accretion disks that launch the jittering jets.Earlier studies that did not include jets calculated the gravitational frequencies that instabilities around the NS emit to have a peak in the crude frequency range of 100–2000Hz.Based on a recent study,I take the source of the gravitational waves of jittering jets to be the turbulent bubbles(cocoons)that the jets inflate as they interact with the outer layers of the core of the star at thousands of kilometers from the NS.The lower frequencies and larger strains than those of gravitational waves from instabilities in CCSNe allow future, and maybe present, detectors to identify the gravitational wave signals of jittering jets.Detection of gravitational waves from local CCSNe might distinguish between the neutrino-driven explosion mechanism and the JJEM. 展开更多

Since flight accidents due to aircraft icing occur from time to time, this paper proposes an array of impact rod-type plasma synthetic jet de-icing methods for aircraft icing problems. The impact rod-type plasma synthetic jet actuator(PSJA)is based on the traditional PSJA with an additional impact rod structure for better de-icing in the flight environment. In this work,we first optimize the ice-breaking performance of a single-impact rod-type PSJA,and then conduct an array of impact rod-type plasma synthetic jet ice-breaking experiments to investigate the relationship between crack expansion and discharge energy, ice thickness and group spacing. The results show that the impact force and impulse of a single-impact rod-type PSJA are proportional to the discharge energy, and there exists a threshold energy Qmin for a single actuator to break the ice, which is proportional to the ice thickness.Only when the discharge energy reaches above Qmin can the ice layer produce cracks, and at the same time, the maximum radial crack length produced during the ice-breaking process is proportional to the discharge energy. When the ice is broken by an array of impact rod PSJAs,the discharge energy and group spacing together determine whether the crack can be extended to the middle region of the actuator. When the group spacing is certain, increasing the energy can increase the intersection of cracks in the middle region, and the ice-fragmentation degree is increased and the ice-breaking effect is better. At the same time, the energy estimation method of ice breaking by an array of impact rod-type PSJAs is proposed according to the law when a single actuator is breaking ice. 展开更多

Double pulsed-laser-ablation is a promising method to prepare nanoparticle composites. The backward movement of the plume after the collision with counter-propagating shock wave has been observed in experiments. In the present study, collision dynamics of the oppositely injected Si and Ge jets into a He background gas was numerically calculated as a simulation for double pulsed-laser-ablation. The experimentally observed backward movement was reproduced. The effect of distance between two jet exits on the distance of backward movement of the jet, BL, after the collision with the counter-propagating shock front was calculated to discuss the collision dynamics and to optimize the target distance for the experiment. We found that BL does not decrease monotonically with increasing distance between two jet exits, but has a maximum value at a certain distance. This behavior is discussed by calculating the expansion dynamics of an individual jet. Shock wave grows with time at the initial stage of the jet expansion and then attenuates;the density just behind the shock front for individual jet has a maximum value at a certain time and position. BL has a maximum value when the densities just behind the shock fronts for the individual jets have maximum values. This result is important for designing the appropriate distance between the two jet exits, i.e., the distance between the targets of double pulsed-laser-ablation. 展开更多

Under the assumption that jets explode all core collapse supernovae(CCSNe),I classify 14 CCSN remnants(CCSNRs)into five groups according to their morphology as shaped by jets, and attribute the classes to the specific angular momentum of the pre-collapse core.Point-symmetry(one CCSNR):According to the jittering jets explosion mechanism(JJEM)when the pre-collapse core rotates very slowly, the newly born neutron star(NS)launches tens of jet-pairs in all directions. The last several jet-pairs might leave an imprint of several pairs of“ears,”i.e.,a point-symmetric morphology. One pair of ears(eight CCSNRs):More rapidly rotating cores might force the last pair of jets to be long-lived and shape one pair of jet-inflated ears that dominates the morphology.S-shaped(one CCSNR):The accretion disk might precess, leading to an S-shaped morphology.Barrel-shaped(three CCSNRs):Even more rapidly rotating pre-collapse cores might result in a final energetic pair of jets that clear the region along the axis of the pre-collapse core rotation and form a barrel-shaped morphology.Elongated(one CCSNR):A very rapidly rotating pre-collapse core forces all jets to be along the same axis such that the jets are inefficient in expelling mass from the equatorial plane and the long-lasting accretion process turns the NS into a black hole. The two new results of this study are the classification of CCSNRs into five classes based on jet-shaped morphological features, and the attribution of the morphological classes mainly to the pre-collapse core rotation in the frame of the JJEM. 展开更多

It is a challenge to polish the interior surface of an additively manufactured component with complex structures and groove sizes less than 1 mm.Traditional polishing methods are disabled to polish the component, meanwhile keeping the structure intact. To overcome this challenge,small-grooved components made of aluminum alloy with sizes less than 1 mm were fabricated by a custom-made printer.A novel approach to multi-phase jet(MPJ)polishing is proposed, utilizing a self-developed polisher that incorporates solid, liquid, and gas phases. In contrast, abrasive air jet(AAJ)polishing is recommended, employing a customized polisher that combines solid and gas phases. After jet polishing, surface roughness(Sa)on the interior surface of grooves decreases from pristine 8.596μm to 0.701μm and 0.336μm via AAJ polishing and MPJ polishing, respectively, and Sa reduces 92%and 96%,correspondingly.Furthermore,a formula defining the relationship between linear energy density and unit defect volume has been developed. The optimized parameters in additive manufacturing are that linear energy density varies from 0.135 J mm^(-1)to 0.22 J mm^(-1).The unit area defect volume achieved via the optimized parameters decreases to 1/12 of that achieved via non-optimized ones.Computational fluid dynamics simulation results reveal that material is removed by shear stress, and the alumina abrasives experience multiple collisions with the defects on the heat pipe groove, resulting in uniform material removal. This is in good agreement with the experimental results. The novel proposed setups, approach, and findings provide new insights into manufacturing complex-structured components, polishing the small-grooved structure, and keeping it unbroken. 展开更多

Homogeneous gold nanoparticles were synthesized under atmospheric pressure using a nonthermal helium plasma jet in a single-step process.A current power supply was used to generate the plasma discharge rich in diverse reactive species. These species induce rapid chemical reactions responsible for the reduction of the gold salts upon contact with the liquid solution. In this study, spherical and monodispersed gold nanoparticles were obtained within 5 min of plasma exposure using a solution containing gold(Ⅲ)chloride hydrate(HAuCl_(4))as a precursor and polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP)as a capping agent to inhibit agglomerations. The formation of these metal nanoparticles was initially perceptible through a visible change in the sample's color, transitioning from light yellow to a red/pink color. This was subsequently corroborated by UVvis spectroscopy, which revealed an optical absorption in the 520-550 nm range for Au NPs,corresponding to the surface plasmon resonance(SPR)band. An investigation into the impact of various parameters, including plasma discharge duration, precursor and capping agent concentrations, was carried out to optimize conditions for the formation of well-separated,spherical gold nanoparticles.Dynamic light scattering(DLS)was used to measure the size of these nanoparticles, transmission electron microscopy(TEM)was used to observe their morphology and X-ray diffraction(XRD)was also employed to determine their crystallographic structure. The results confirm that homogeneous spherical gold nanoparticles with an average diameter of 13 nm can be easily synthesized through a rapid, straightforward, and environmentally friendly approach utilizing a helium atmospheric pressure plasma. 展开更多

Reactive armour is a very efficient add-on armour against shaped charge threats.Explosive reactive armour consists of one or several plates that are accelerated by an explosive.Similar but less violent acceleration of plates can also be achieved in a completely inert reactive armour. To be efficient against elongated jets, the motion of the plates needs to be inclined against the jet such that a sliding contact between the jet and the plates is established. This sliding contact causes a deflection and thinning of the jet.Under certain circumstances, the contact will become unstable, leading to severe disturbances on the jet. These disturbances will drastically reduce the jet penetration performance and it is therefore of interest to study the conditions that leads to an unstable contact.Previous studies on the interaction between shaped charge jets and flyer plates have shown that it is mainly the forward moving plate in an explosive reactive armour that is effective in disturbing the jet. This is usually attributed to the higher plate-to-jet mass flux ratio involved in the collision of the forward moving plate compared to the backward moving plate. For slow moving plates,as occurs in inert reactive armour, the difference in mass flux for the forward and backward moving plate is much lesser, and it is therefore of interest to study if other factors than the mass flux influences on the protection capability. In this work, experiments have been performed where a plate is accelerated along its length, interacting with a shaped charge jet that is fired at an oblique angle to the plate’s normal, either against or along the plate’s velocity. The arrangement corresponds to a jet interacting with a flyer plate from a reactive armour, with the exception that the collision velocity is the same for both types of obliquities in these experiments. The experiments show that disturbances on the jet are different in the two cases even though the collision velocities are the same.Numerical simulations of the interaction support the observation. The difference is attributed to the character of the contact pressure in the interaction region. For a backward moving plate, the maximum contact pressure is obtained at the beginning of the interaction zone and the contact pressure is therefore higher upstream than downstream of the jet while the opposite is true for a forward moving plate.A negative interface pressure gradient with respect to the jet motion results in a more stable flow than a positive, which means that the jet-plate contact is more stable for a backward moving plate than for a forward moving plate.A forward moving plate is thus more effective in disturbing the jet than a backward moving plate, not only because of the higher jet to plate mass flux ratio but also because of the character of the contact with the jet. 展开更多
