Current Status and Enhancement of Collaborative Research in the World:A Case Study of Osaka University

Purpose:The purpose of this research is to provide evidence for decision-makers to realize the potentials of collaborations between countries/regions via the scientometric analysis of co-authoring in academic publications.Design/methodology/approach:The approach is that Osaka University,which has set a strategy to become a global campus,is positioned to have a leading role to enhance such collaborations.This research measures co-authoring relations between Osaka University and other countries/regions to identify networks for fostering strong research collaborations.Findings:Five countries are identified as candidates for the future global campuses of Osaka University based on three factors,co-authoring relations,GDP growth,and population growth.Research limitations:The main limitation of this study is not being able to use the relations by the former positions of authors in Osaka University,because the data retrieved is limited by the query of the organization name at the first step.Practical implications:The significance of this work is to provide evidence for the university strategy to expand abroad based on the quantity and visualization of trends.Originality/value:With wider practical implementations,the approach of this research is useful in making a strategic roadmap for scientific organizations that intend to collaborate internationally.

To Club or Not to Club, That Is the Question Debating the Meaning of Catholic Identity for Universities in Today’s World

This case study presents the dilemma faced by a French university with Christian identity regarding a students’request to officially approve a club for the LGBTQ+community:which would be the most prudent response considering all matters involved?The case is disguised:it combines elements taken from very similar cases impacting today more than a few Catholic universities around the globe.Part A describes this university:history,principles and values,academic and financial information,relations with its stakeholders,etc.This part also describes its religious context and some relevant statistics regarding the LGTBQ+community.Finally,a series of opinions regarding the issue and how to answer the students’request presented in the form of an open discussion at the university’s steering committee provides different arguments in favor or against the approval.Part B offers some guidelines useful to take a prudent response considering all matters involved:legal,ethical,governance,and communicative.These guidelines are divided in three chapters:what should be the framework for such a discussion,strategic recommendations,and practical suggestions.Their aim is to provide a sort of a blueprint for university heads and administrators,to design a tailor-made response fitting the identity and stakeholders’map of their own university.

Integrating an academic management system with blockchain:A case study

This paper reports the design,implementation,and experimental phases of the EU H2020 QualiChain pilot“Staffing the Public Sector—The Case of Portugal”.The overall purpose of this pilot is to ensure the authenticity and integrity of the diplomas for all involved stakeholders and therefore to contribute to solving the diploma counterfeiting and/or falsification that is a great threat to the recruitment of qualified personnel.The main innovative aspect of this solution is the integration that is offered between an Academic Management System(the Fenix.edu platform)and a Blockchain(Ethereum)to automatically deploy diplomas.This solution helps the involved stakeholders trust the diplomas provided.The case study involves four different stakeholders and studies,specifically,the increase in their satisfaction in terms of diploma control,diploma veracity,and diploma credibility.The developed system was tested with external participants who were asked to follow a set of guidelines and complete a survey to assess their perceptions.All system interactions were recorded,and the data were analyzed.The results indicated that the participants successfully executed the guidelines and that a perception increase toward diploma control,veracity,and credibility was identified.

The dilemma confronting modern university development presents a challenge to the management ability of university presidents,hence a need to review how successful presidents of the past managed.Wu Yifang,the first Chinese woman president with remarkable achievements in education,has thus come to our attention.As President of Ginling College(GC),she was confronted with a preponderance of contradictions,including the conflicts between the ideas of Western universities and Chinese traditional culture,between Christian spirit and social responsibility,between educational logic and the political environment,between traditional inheritance and innovation,and between universal university governance experience and the unique needs of GC.She eventually succeeded in balancing these contradictions with her superb management wisdom,with the management ideas in China’s classical text,the Mean playing an important role in facilitating GC’s development.Wu Yifang’s management style demonstrated a remarkable balance in prioritizing both the pursuit of talent cultivation and social services,based on carefully catering to core principles pertaining to the development of universities and students.Wu Yifang’s management practices and philosophy can thus provide important inspiration for university presidents.
