Information Conductivity:Universal Performance Measure for Semantic Communications

As a novel paradigm,semantic communication provides an effective solution for breaking through the future development dilemma of classical communication systems.However,it remains an unsolved problem of how to measure the information transmission capability for a given semantic communication method and subsequently compare it with the classical communication method.In this paper,we first present a review of the semantic communication system,including its system model and the two typical coding and transmission methods for its implementations.To address the unsolved issue of the information transmission capability measure for semantic communication methods,we propose a new universal performance measure called Information Conductivity.We provide the definition and the physical significance to state its effectiveness in representing the information transmission capabilities of the semantic communication systems and present elaborations including its measure methods,degrees of freedom,and progressive analysis.Experimental results in image transmission scenarios validate its practical applicability. 展开更多

Scientific interest in student’s mental health experiences has been increasing in the last years due to their influence on students’learning processes,academic performance,and recently,the suicidal news of a student at a private university due to her mental health condition in Lahore Punjab,Pakistan,captured public attention.That incident also shifted researchers and scholars’attention on the much underexplored and tabooed sphere of the broader public health domain.Hence,the current study aimed to explore the relationship between mental health problems and Pakistani university students’academic performance.Participants were 540 senior semester students within the age range of 20–35 years taken from public and private institutes of Pakistan’s major cities,including Lahore,Islamabad,and Peshawar.Descriptive and inferential statistics was employed for data analysis.Pearson Product Moment Correlation,Hierarchical Regression analysis,and Independent sample t-test were used for data analysis in inferential statistics.The results of the study reveal that there is a strong positive association between mental health and improvement in academic performance.Mental health problems negatively affect the academic performance of university students.The findings of the current study were beneficial for shedding light on the ignorant area within the broader public health domain;the results are also helpful in raising awareness for not only students but also the parents and university administration to plan and design effective intervention strategies to provide proper mental health that resultantly promote academic excellence. 展开更多

At present,as of June 15,2019,the Ministry of Education announced a total of 2,956 institutions of higher learning in China,including 2,688 regular institutions of higher learning(including 266 independent colleges)and 268 adult institutions of higher learning.At present,the development of colleges and universities is also facing serious problems.With the development and progress of the times,many colleges and universities are getting better and better,which is closely related to the teachers’strength and teachers’job satisfaction.It is very important to improve the job satisfaction of university staff.The introduction of teachers is crucial,and many schools are weak in teaching staff,which hinders the long-term development of schools.The turnover of teachers in colleges and universities is closely related to job satisfaction.At present,the overall turnover of teachers in colleges and universities is too frequent.The rapid development of China’s colleges and universities is still expanding the scale of development,which requires more teachers.In the ensuing enterprise competition,university positions are not dominant,mainly in the current life,salary is very important,family expenses,parents,and children’s expenses are getting higher and higher,but the salary of university teachers cannot keep up with the development of the times.At present,one of the problems in colleges and universities is that salary promotion is not friendly to teachers with old qualifications,high academic qualifications,and high professional titles.Therefore,to improve the job satisfaction of college teachers is the only way for the long-term development of colleges and universities.This study investigated the relationship between job satisfaction and employee performance among 341 teachers from N University in Nanning,Guangxi province,China.The independent variable is six factors of job satisfaction,including working environment,salary and promotion,job security,relationship with colleagues,relationship with supervisor,and fairness level.The dependent variable is three factors of employee performance,including enthusiasm,availability,and job engagement.Finally,through data analysis,it was concluded that there was a positive correlation between teachers’job satisfaction and staff performance in N University. 展开更多

Substantiality:A Construct Indicating Research Excellence to Measure University Research Performance

Purpose:The adequacy of research performance of universities or research institutes have often been evaluated and understood in two axes:“quantity”(i.e.size or volume)and“quality”(i.e.what we define here as a measure of excellence that is considered theoretically independent of size or volume,such as clarity in diamond grading).The purpose of this article is,however,to introduce a third construct named“substantiality”(“ATSUMI”in Japanese)of research performance and to demonstrate its importance in evaluating/understanding research universities.Design/methodology/approach:We take a two-step approach to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed construct by showing that(1)some characteristics of research universities are not well captured by the conventional constructs(“quantity”and“quality”)-based indicators,and(2)the“substantiality”indicators can capture them.Furthermore,by suggesting that“substantiality”indicators appear linked to the reputation that appeared in university reputation rankings by simple statistical analysis,we reveal additional benefits of the construct.Findings:We propose a new construct named“substantiality”for measuring research performance.We show that indicators based on“substantiality”can capture important characteristics of research institutes.“Substantiality”indicators demonstrate their“predictive powers”on research reputation.Research limitations:The concept of“substantiality”originated from IGO game;therefore the ease/difficulty of accepting the concept is culturally dependent.In other words,while it is easily accepted by people from Japan and other East Asian countries and regions,it might be difficult for researchers from other cultural regions to accept it.Practical implications:There is no simple solution to the challenge of evaluating research universities’research performance.It is vital to combine different types of indicators to understand the excellence of research institutes.Substantiality indicators could be part of such a combination of indicators.Originality/value:The authors propose a new construct named substantiality for measuring research performance.They show that indicators based on this construct can capture the important characteristics of research institutes. 展开更多

This study was conducted to see if organizational performance is affected by human resource information system (HRIS) and organizational learning capability. HRIS examined in this study consists of performance appraisal and career management. Data were collected at the public universities located in West Sumatra using questionnaires as the main data collection tool in quantitative approach. Data were analysed using the Statistical Program for Social Science (SPSS). HRIS was measured by using the concept of behavior and found that independent variables significantly related to organizational performance. These results supported that the organizational learning capability as moderating variable influenced the relationship between HRIS and organizational performance. The model stresses the importance of HRIS which supports the organizational performance at public universities. The results of this study indicate that at public universities in West Sumatra, the improvement of HRIS will lead to higher levels of organizational performance. Results of this study are expected to provide benefits to all stakeholders who have an interest in higher education, especially in information technology and performance. 展开更多

The global economic crisis is affecting performances of not-for-profits. At the same time donors are targeted by a pressing good-cause related marketing, so that the competition for philanthropy is particularly keen. U.S. universities can be public, not-for-profit and for-profit. U.S. not-for-profit universities are confronted with different marketing, fundraising and revenue diversification. Above all, marketing concerns customers and their segmentation and their purchasing-power exploitation;fundraising aims to gain the trustworthiness of donors, instead. The aim of this paper is the analysis of the revenue diversification of a sample of 100 U.S. not-for-profit universities according to IRS (Internal Revenue Service) Forms. These 100 U.S. universities had the highest 2012’s revenues for the Guidestar ranking (www.guidestar.org). The cluster analysis gives evidence that the highest gain and the highest solvency are both connected with the implementation of revenue diversification for one profile. The most crowded cluster is the Marketing Expert with the second highest gain. 展开更多

Using university rating as an index to performance, empirical analyses with the data from 145 public universities and colleges in China show that increased competition in the education service market is associated with higher university's (college's) performance. And increased competition in R&D may make a quadratic effect on university's (college's) performance. University's performance improves when a university is directed as a branch of the central government because they enjoy some degree of management flexibility more than the local government controlled ones. The contemporary developments of Information and Communication Technologies usage have fueled a popular concern. The young people are experiencing technology addiction behavior due to excessive media and technology usage. A valid instrument is required to detect individuals at high risk of social media and technology addiction. Objective: The objectives of this study are to assess prevalence of the technology addiction using the Media and Technology Usage and Attitudes Scale (MTUAS) and to investigate the impacts of online social networking on health and academic performance of young university students in Lebanon. Methods: During the academic year 2017-2018, a cross-sectional study which enrolled 705 young university students was conducted. Data was collected using MTUAS questionnaire. The translation and cultural adaptation of the MTUAS followed a standardized protocol. The psychometric properties were then evaluated. We used multivariate regression analyses to determine which characteristics were associated with the technology addiction among students. Results: 705 filled out the questionnaire aged 17 to 35 years (mean = 20.42;SD = 2.41), 74% of whom were females. The internal consistency was high for all subscales and ranged from 0.54 - 0.87. The MTUAS yielded statistically significant scores for subgroups (known group validity). Males’ students had a higher risk of addiction to social media and technology than females. The use of media was viewed common among the smokers (OR = 1.76;95% CI = 1.10 - 2.82, p = 0.02) and drinkers of alcohol (OR = 1.80;95% CI = 1.04 - 3.11, p = 0.04). Students that used e-mailing, smartphone, and TV viewing had a high academic performance level. Females and public university students had negative attitudes toward technology. In conclusion: The technology becomes a big problem on the universities students’ users that has an impact on their life and affects their academic performance. The MTUAS Arabic version has been evaluated as a valid and reliable instrument. 展开更多

Social Networks Sites (SNSs) are dominating all internet users’ generations, especially the students’ communities. Consequently, academic institutions are increasingly using SNSs which leads to emerge a crucial question regarding the impact of SNSs on students’ academic performance. This research investigates how and to what degree the use of SNSs affects the students’ academic performance. The current research’s data was conducted by using drop and collect surveys on a large population from the University of Jordan. 366 undergraduate students answered the survey from different faculties at the university. In order to study the impact of SNSs on student’s academic performance, the research hypotheses was tested by using descriptive analysis, T-test and ANOVA. Research results showed that there was a significant impact of SNS on the student’s academic performance. Also, there was a significant impact of SNS use per week on the student’s academic performance, whereas no differences found in the impact of use of SNSs on academic performance due to age, academic achievement, and use per day to most used sites. The findings of this research can be used to suggest future strategies in enhancing student’s awareness in efficient time management and better multitasking that can lead to improving study activities and academic achievements. 展开更多

There are so many university ranking systems for academic performance as based on different criteria in the world.These systems,which have been considered since beginning of 2000’s years,have quickly followed with their own hierarchical measures by higher education organizations.This paper mentions the main principles of a new system for university performance in Turkey and summarizes the study,which was made for the performance of selected universities throughout country.The system depends on teaching income,teaching structure,teaching quality,number of publications and projects,the index for entrepreneurial and innovative university,and student satisfaction.The aim is to provide a comparative study with well-balanced and justice decision for the related universities.This study includes the 10 universities(Anadolu,Çukurova,Cumhuriyet,Dicle,Erciyes,Fırat,İnönü,Ondokuz Mayis,Selçuk,and Uludağ)which were founded between 1973 and 1978.In this study,data belonging to the period of 2010 and 2014 have been considered for the related universities.This study indicates that enlargement rate,localization,politicization,and degradation on management system influence the performance of universities. 展开更多

基于产学研协同创新视角,以省域为空间单元,测算并比较产学研三大主体的旅游创新投入产出效率及空间特征,并进一步分析创新效率对旅游产业绩效的影响。选择旅游企业、高校及科研机构为旅游创新主体的代表,采用DEA模型和灰色关联方法对3... 基于产学研协同创新视角,以省域为空间单元,测算并比较产学研三大主体的旅游创新投入产出效率及空间特征,并进一步分析创新效率对旅游产业绩效的影响。选择旅游企业、高校及科研机构为旅游创新主体的代表,采用DEA模型和灰色关联方法对3个不同时段的投入产出数据进行分析。结果表明:各省份三大主体的旅游创新效率值总体偏低,并呈现出“一带一路”沿线,“东南-西北”和东部沿海地区等省份创新效率值较高的空间格局;三大主体旅游创新效率的协调度不高,部分省份达到高平衡状态;三大主体的旅游创新效率均与省域旅游产业绩效存在显著相关性。相关结果有助于理解区域旅游创新的结构和过程,为我国旅游创新资源的合理分配提供参考。 展开更多

四川大学博物馆采用钢框架结构体系,并设置屈曲约束支撑改善结构的抗震性能。介绍了四川大学博物馆的结构设计参数及抗震性能目标。针对结构设计中的重难点,开展了屈曲约束支撑的工作机理分析、框架柱计算长度与穿层柱分析、东侧大悬挑... 四川大学博物馆采用钢框架结构体系,并设置屈曲约束支撑改善结构的抗震性能。介绍了四川大学博物馆的结构设计参数及抗震性能目标。针对结构设计中的重难点,开展了屈曲约束支撑的工作机理分析、框架柱计算长度与穿层柱分析、东侧大悬挑空间的相关分析。利用反应谱分析及时程分析探究了屈曲约束支撑工作机理,分析结果表明,屈曲约束支撑能够有效改善钢结构产生塑性铰的状况,起到保护主体钢框架的作用。针对东侧大悬挑空间的功能要求,设计采用了屋顶桁架结合钢拉杆吊挂东侧大楼梯的结构形式,通过结构防连续倒塌分析、楼板应力分析、楼盖舒适度分析、关键节点有限元分析等确保该部位结构设计安全合理。对整体结构受力机理和薄弱部位进行了研究,提出了重点部位的设计原则和加强措施。 展开更多
