Based on the split-characteristic finite element method, the numerical model with the ...An efficient and accurate solution algorithm was proposed for 1-D unsteady flow problems widely existing in hydraulic engineering. Based on the split-characteristic finite element method, the numerical model with the Saint-Venant equations of 1-D unsteady flows was established. The assembled f'mite element equations were solved with the tri-diagonal matrix algorithm. In the semi-implicit and explicit scheme, the critical time step of the method was dependent on the space step and flow velocity, not on the wave celerity. The method was used to eliminate the restriction due to the wave celerity for the computational analysis of unsteady open-channel flows. The model was verified by the experimental data and theoretical solution and also applied to the simulation of the flow in practical river networks. It shows that the numerical method has high efficiency and accuracy and can be used to simulate 1-D steady flows, and unsteady flows with shock waves or flood waves. Compared with other numerical methods, the algorithm of this method is simpler with higher accuracy, less dissipation, higher computation efficiency and less computer storage.展开更多

Effective management of a river reach requires a sound understanding of flow and sediment transport generated by varying natural and artificial runoff conditions. Flow and sediment transport within the Ning-Meng reach...Effective management of a river reach requires a sound understanding of flow and sediment transport generated by varying natural and artificial runoff conditions. Flow and sediment transport within the Ning-Meng reach of the Yellow River(NMRYR), northern China are controlled by a complex set of factors/processes, mainly including four sets of factors:(1) aeolian sediments from deserts bordering the main stream;(2) inflow of water and sediment from numerous tributaries;(3) impoundment of water by reservoir/hydro-junction; and(4) complex diversion and return of irrigation water. In this study, the 1-D flow & sediment transport model developed by the Yellow River Institute of Hydraulic Research was used to simulate the flow and sediment transport within the NMRYR from 2001 to 2012. All four sets of factors that primarily control the flow and sediment transport mentioned above were considered in this model. Compared to the measured data collected from the hydrological stations along the NMRYR, the simulated flow and sediment transport values were generally acceptable, with relative mean deviation between measured and simulated values of 〈15%. However, simulated sediment concentration and siltation values within two sub-reaches(i.e., Qingtongxia Reservoir to Bayan Gol Hydrological Station and Bayan Gol Hydrological Station to Toudaoguai Hydrological Station) for some periods exhibited relatively large errors(the relative mean deviations between measured and simulated values of 18% and 25%, respectively). These errors are presumably related to the inability to accurately determine the quantity of aeolian sediment influx to the river reach and the inflow of water from the ten ephemeral tributaries. This study may provide some valuable insights into the numerical simulations of flow and sediment transport in large watersheds and also provide a useful model for the effective management of the NMRYR.展开更多

In order to explore the unforced unsteadiness of centrifugal pumps,a 2-D frequency domain imaging display technology was used to study the development of these unsteady flow structures at partial flow conditions.The r...In order to explore the unforced unsteadiness of centrifugal pumps,a 2-D frequency domain imaging display technology was used to study the development of these unsteady flow structures at partial flow conditions.The results showed that,the unsteady flow field was not only affected by rotor and stator interaction,but also appeared an unforced unsteadiness with fundamental frequency of St≈0.23 around the impeller throat area.Moreover,as the flow rates decreased,this unsteady flow structure gradually weakened and disappeared.When the flow rate was reduced to 0.6 times of design flow rate,another two unforced unsteady flow structures with characteristic frequencies of St≈0.0714 and St≈0.12 began to appear in the same area.Therefore,with the operating condition smaller than design flow rate,the internal flow became more and more complex.In addition to the forced unsteadiness,the unforced unsteadiness which is not connected with the blade passage frequency became more and more obvious.展开更多
This paper focuses on the effects of external geometrical modifications on the aerodynamic characteristics of the MQ-1 predator Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle(UCAV)using computational fluid dynamics.The investigations...This paper focuses on the effects of external geometrical modifications on the aerodynamic characteristics of the MQ-1 predator Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle(UCAV)using computational fluid dynamics.The investigations are performed for 16 flight conditions at an altitude of7.6 km and at a constant speed of 56.32 m/s.Two models are analysed,namely the baseline model and the model with external geometrical modifications installed on it.Both the models are investigated for various angles of attack from-4°to 16°,angles of bank from 0°to 6°and angles of yaw from 0°to 4°.Due to the unavailability of any experimental(wind tunnel or flight test)data for this UCAV in the literature,a thorough verification of calculations process is presented to demonstrate confidence level in the numerical simulations.The analysis quantifies the loss of lift and increase in drag for the modified version of the MQ-1 predator UCAV along with the identification of stall conditions.Local improvement(in drag)of up to 96%has been obtained by relocating external modifications,whereas global drag force reduction of roughly 0.5%is observed.The effects of external geometrical modifications on the control surfaces indicate the blanking phenomenon and reduction in forces on the control surfaces that can reduce the aerodynamic performance of the UCAV.展开更多
