Willa Cather provides us two sets of values. To some people, success is measured in terms of money. To some success means choosing one’s own life and realizing one’s own values. In the novel The Sculptor’s Funeral Cather portrays an artist, who breaks the bondage of the old environment, and becomes a successful sculptor. However, he is regarded as a failure by his local people because the values by which they judge success are not the same.展开更多

Through the analysis of the life value in family, life value in work and life value in society, the importance of life value and the life value in different circumstances are vividly revealed. At the same time, this paper also emphasizes the meaning of life and gives some suggestion about how to achieve one's life value. Marketing strategies help make decisions that will help us to bring the subject to market activities. The current trend is a knowledge-based society, skills, abilities, information, storage, and transmission. Our marketing strategy focuses on four key issues: production, respectively service, price, distribution channels, and advertising. It is important to know how to develop an individual's current self-image. Implementation strategies are then engaged in transforming decisions into concrete action, meaning, and the decision has to be taken with regard to flexibility and acceptance. The sample consists of 4,420 respondents, men and women in three age groups: 0-15 years, 16-40 years, and 41-60 years. All responded to one question, "Where is your center?" Respondents had to show on their body. The question was chosen very sensitive, not to predict the answer. Terms soul, psyche, personality would be very manipulative, and therefore were excluded. In line with expectations, the majority of respondents have shown to their head, chest, and abdomen, but were also unconventional answers, in accordance with the preferred self-image and values of the individual. Lessons from research outputs were analyzed by the following processes: general description, item-total correlation, exploratory factor analysis of individual areas, and correlation analysis of individual items. It was found that medium correlations between area of body abdomen and age to 15 years were significant. Mean item-total correlation for areas of body were: Head was 0.35 and chest 0.43, and abdomen 0.22. In the descriptive statistics it was found that most respondents preferred the chest, followed by the head and abdomen. As for the distribution of respondents into three age groups, we found differences between men and women. Next, it was analyzed the relationship between the areas of the body and gender. Statistically significant differences were found on the chest, where women scored more than men, and it was also found significant differences in the abdominal area, where men scored more than women.展开更多

A sample of Norwegians were asked to state their choices between different air travel al-ternatives, i.e. travel time, trip costs, fatalities in terrorist acts on air transport and type of passenger screen-ing. Screening was specified as either the current uniform screening or a new risk-based screening in which passengers are divided into three groups: high-risk, medium-risk and low-risk. Respondents were informed that risk-based screening implied they would have to identify themselves using a biometric identity card and that those not qualifying as low-risk passengers would be checked with body scanners. Our results indicate that the sampled passengers were very concerned about privacy. Maintaining existing uniform screening was preferred to a new risk-based screening system, even though risk-based screening was presented as poten-tially preventing future terrorist fatalities.展开更多

In the twentieth century, modern Chinese literature generally adopted four paradigms in pursuit of this objective: the socio-political paradigm that viewed traditional literature in terms of "quintessence-dross" under the guidance of the Marxist doctrine of the critical inheritance of cultural heritage; the "spiritual awakening" paradigm that, being inspired by Western schools of thought such as hermeneutics, viewed traditional literature as "the source of new literature"; the scientific-aesthetic paradigm that viewed traditional literature as combining scientific interpretation and modern aesthetics and focused on interpretation, transformation, innovation and creation from within; and the folk paradigm that viewed literary tradition as a narrative of daily life demonstrating the way in which ancient and modern literature were connected in a cultural whole. What is important in the complementary and competitive development of these coexisting paradigms is highlighting "problem consciousness" in "interaction" and "original creation" and the reconstruction of the value of real human life through entering into and reactivating the resources of ancient literature.展开更多
