In order to monitor the working state of piston motor and measure its instantaneous rotation speed accurately, the measuring principle and method of instantaneous rotation speed based on industrial personal computer and data acquisition card are introduced, and the major error source, influence mechanism and processing method of data quantization error are dis- cussed. By means of hybrid programming approach of LabVIEW and MATLAB, the instantaneous rotation speed measurement system for the piston motor in variable speed hydraulic system is designed. The simulation and experimental results show that the designed instantaneous speed measurement system is feasible. Furthermore, the sampling frequency has an important influ- ence on the instantaneous rotation speed measurement of piston motor and higher sampling frequency can lower quantization er- ror and improve measurement accuracy. 展开更多

Large-scale wind turbine generator systems have strong nonlinear multivariable characteristics with many uncertain factors and disturbances. Automatic control is crucial for the efficiency and reliability of wind turbines. On the basis of simplified and proper model of variable speed variable pitch wind turbines, the effective wind speed is estimated using extended Kaiman filter. Intelligent control schemes proposed in the paper include two loops which operate in synchronism with each other. At below-rated wind speed, the inner loop adopts adaptive fuzzy control based on variable universe for generator torque regulation to realize maximum wind energy capture. At above-rated wind speed, a controller based on least square support vector machine is proposed to adjust pitch angle and keep rated output power. In this study,a dynamic model for the bearing rotor system of a high-speed train under variable speed conditions is established.In contrast to previous studies,the contact stress is simplifed in the proposed model and the compensation balance excitation caused by the rotor mass eccentricity considered.The angle iteration method is used to overcome the challenge posed by the inability to determine the roller space position during bearing rotation.The simulation results show that the model accurately describes the dynamics of bearings under varying speed profles that contain acceleration,deceleration,and speed oscillation stages.The order ratio spectrum of the bearing vibration signal indicates that both the single and multiple frequencies in the simulation results are consistent with the theoretical results.Experiments on bearings with outer and inner ring faults under various operating conditions are performed to verify the developed model. 展开更多

The optimum control strategy and the saving potential of all variable chiller plant under the conditions of changing building cooling load and cooling water supply temperature were investigated. Based on a simulation model of water source chiller plant established in dynamic transient simulation program (TRNSYS),the four-variable quadratic orthogonal regression experiments were carried out by taking cooling load,cooling water supply temperature,cooling water flow rate and chilled water flow rate as variables,and the fitting formulas expressing the relationships between the total energy consumption of chiller plant with the four selected parameters was obtained. With the SAS statistical software and MATHEMATICA mathematical software,the optimal chilled water flow rate and cooling water flow rate which result in the minimum total energy consumption were determined under continuously varying cooling load and cooling water supply temperature. With regard to a chiller plant serving an office building in Shanghai,the total energy consumptions under different control strategies were computed in terms of the forecasting function of cooling load and water source temperature. The results show that applying the optimal control strategy to the chiller plant can bring a saving of 23.27% in power compared with the corresponding conventional variable speed plant,indicating that the optimal control strategy can improve the energy efficiency of chiller plant. 展开更多

In this paper, an attitude maneuver control problem is investigated for a rigid spacecraft using an array of two variable speed control moment gyroscopes (VSCMGs) with gimbal axes skewed to each other. A mathematical model is constructed by taking the spacecraft and the gyroscopes together as an integrated system, with the coupling interaction between them considered. To overcome the singular issues of the VSCMGs due to the conventional torque-based method, the first-order derivative of gimbal rates and the second-order derivative of the rotor spinning velocity, instead of the gyroscope torques, are taken as input variables. Moreover, taking external disturbances into account, a feedback control law is designed for the system based on a method of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). A control strategy of variable speed limits(VSL)was developed to reduce the travel time at freeway recurrent bottleneck areas.The proposed control strategy particularly focused on preventing the capacity drop and increasing the discharge flow.A cell transmission model(CTM)was developed to evaluate the effects of the proposed VSL control strategy on the traffic operations.The results show that the total travel time is reduced by 25.5% and the delay is reduced by 56.1%.The average travel speed is increased by 34.3% and the queue length is reduced by 31.0%.The traffic operation is improved by the proposed VSL control strategy.The way to use the proposed VSL control strategy in different types of freeway bottlenecks was also discussed by considering different traffic flow characteristics.It is concluded that the VSL control strategy is effective for merge bottlenecks but is less effective for diverge bottlenecks. 展开更多

This paper presents direct torque and flux control(DTFC) of a variable speed pumped storage power plant(VSPSP). By this method both torque and flux have been applied to control the VSPSP. The comparison between VSPSP's control strategies is studied. At the first, a wind turbine with the capacity 2.2 k W and DTFC control strategies simulated then a 250 MW VSPSP is simulated with all of its parts(including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and its control system) by MATLAB software. In all of simulations, both converters including two-level voltage source converter(2LVSC) and three-level voltage source converter(3LVSC) are applied. The results of applying 2LVSC and 3LVSC are the rapid dynamic responses with better efficiency, reducing the total harmonic distortion(THD) and ripple of rotor torque and flux. 展开更多

This paper presents an electronic VSD (variable speed drive) for three-phase IM (induction motor) using a microcontroller. The VSD is designed for cooling applications where the 1M is coupled to a cooling fan. The drive receives temperature feedback from objects to be cooled and output a corresponding frequency to the IM. A prototype of the VSD is constructed to control a 175 W, four pole, squirrel cage three-phase IM. The heart of the control circuit is a low-cost microchip's PICI6F777 microcontroller which is programmed using C language to generate variable frequency SPWM (sinusoidal pulse width modulation) switching signals. These switching signals are fed to an 1GBT inverter. The VSD constructed can be switched between two modes of speed control" automatic temperature-controlled mode and manual user-controlled mode. Energy modeling and optimization of building condenser water systems with all-variable speed pumps and tower fans:A case study

The emergence of building condenser water systems with all-variable speed pumps and tower fans allows for increased efficiency and flexibility of chiller plants in partial load operation but also increases the control complexity of condenser water systems.This study aims to develop an integrated modeling technique for evaluating and optimizing the energy performance of such a condenser water system.The proposed system model is based on the semi-physical semi-empirical chiller,pump,and cooling tower models,with capabilities of fully considering the hydraulic and thermal interactions in the condenser water loop,being solved analytically and much faster than iterative solvers and supporting the explicit optimization of the pump and tower fan frequency.A mathematical approach,based on the system model and constrained optimization technique,is subsequently established to evaluate the energy performance of a typical dual setpoint-based variable speed strategy and find its energy-saving potential and most efficient operation by jointly optimizing pumps and tower fans.An all-variable speed chiller plant from Wuhan,China,is used for a case study to validate the system model’s accuracy and explore its applicability.The results showed that the system model can accurately simulate the condenser water system’s performance under various operating conditions.By optimizing the frequencies of pumps and tower fans,the total system energy consumption can be reduced by 12%–13%compared to the fixed dual setpoint-based strategy with range and approach setpoints of 4℃and 2℃.In contrast,the energy-saving potential of optimizing the cooling tower sequencing is insignificant.A simple joint speed control method for optimizing the pumps and tower fans emerged,i.e.,the optimal pump and fan frequency are linearly correlated(if both are non-extremes)and depend on the chiller part load ratio only,irrespective of the ambient wet-bulb temperature and chilled water supply temperature.It was also found that the oversizing issue has further limited the energy-saving space of the studied system and results in the range and approach setpoints being inaccessible.The study’s findings can serve as references to the operation optimization of all-variable speed condenser water systems in the future. 展开更多

In the manufacturing industry,reasonable scheduling can greatly improve production efficiency,while excessive resource consumption highlights the growing significance of energy conservation in production.This paper studies the problem of energy-efficient distributed heterogeneous permutation flowshop problem with variable processing speed(DHPFSP-VPS),considering both the minimum makespan and total energy consumption(TEC)as objectives.A discrete multi-objective squirrel search algorithm(DMSSA)is proposed to solve the DHPFSPVPS.DMSSA makes four improvements based on the squirrel search algorithm.Firstly,in terms of the population initialization strategy,four hybrid initialization methods targeting different objectives are proposed to enhance the quality of initial solutions.Secondly,enhancements are made to the population hierarchy system and position updating methods of the squirrel search algorithm,making it more suitable for discrete scheduling problems.Additionally,regarding the search strategy,six local searches are designed based on problem characteristics to enhance search capability.Moreover,a dynamic predator strategy based on Q-learning is devised to effectively balance DMSSA’s capability for global exploration and local exploitation.Finally,two speed control energy-efficient strategies are designed to reduce TEC.Extensive comparative experiments are conducted in this paper to validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategies.The results of comparing DMSSA with other algorithms demonstrate its superior performance and its potential for efficient solving of the DHPFSP-VPS problem. 展开更多

This paper presents a nonlinear control approach to variable speed wind turbine(VSWT)with a wind speed estimator.The dynamics of the wind turbine(WT)is derived from single mass model.In this work,a modified Newton Raphson estimator has been considered for exact estimation of effective wind speed.The main objective of this work is to extract maximum energy from the wind at below rated wind speed while reducing drive train oscillation.In order to achieve the above objectives,VSWT should operate close to the optimal power coefficient.The generator torque is considered as the control input to achieve maximum energy capture.From the literature,it is clear that existing linear and nonlinear control techniques suffer from poor tracking of WT dynamics,increased power loss and complex control law.In addition,they are not robust with respect to input disturbances.In order to overcome the above drawbacks,adaptive fuzzy integral sliding mode control(AFISMC)is proposed for VSWT control.The proposed controller is tested with different types of disturbances and compared with other nonlinear controllers such as sliding mode control and integral sliding mode control.The result shows the better performance of AFISMC and its robustness to input disturbances.In this paper,the discontinuity in integral sliding mode controller is smoothed by using hyperbolic tangent function,and the sliding gain is adapted using a fuzzy technique which makes the controller more robust. 展开更多

This paper reviews the status and progress of the investigation on power system small-signal angular stability as affected by grid-connected variable speed wind generators(VSWGs).The review is carried out on the basis of a survey of recently published representative papers.Strategies of the investigation made in those selected papers are classified into two groups:1)VSWGs displacing synchronous generators(SGs);2)VSWGs simply being added in a power system.The diversification of the results of the investigation is highlighted in the survey.Careful analysis on two strategies of the investigation is conducted in this paper.It is revealed that in the strategy of VSWGs displacing SGs,there are two factors which could affect power system small-signal angular stability differently:1)Withdrawing the SGs’dynamics;2)adding the VSWGs’dynamics.In the strategy of adding VSWGs in the power system,there are also two affecting factors:1)Change of load flow brought about by the VSWGs;2)dynamic interactions with the SGs introduced by the VSWGs.Hence diversified results of the investigation obtained so far are not only due to the dependence of the investigation on sample power systems used,but also caused by the mixture of different affecting factors.This paper is concluded with a summary of key issues of the investigation for future work. 展开更多

A validated analytical helicopter model able to predict the main and tail rotor power is utilized. The fixed height GF has substantially small influence on the tail rotor power in hover and low to medium speed forward flight, and can obtain significant power reduction in high speed flight.This ability can be enhanced by decreasing the tail rotor speed. With the deployment of GF, the collective pitch of the tail rotor decreases, and the maximum tail rotor thrust increases. The GF can compensate the reduction of the maximum thrust by the decrease in the tail rotor speed. The GF with a height of 5% of the chord length can almost remedy 50% of the thrust reduction introduced by decreasing 10% of the tail rotor speed. With the increase of GF height, the maximum thrust generated by the tail rotor increases. The GF with larger height can cause the increase in the tail rotor power in hover and low to medium speed flight. The retractable GF can obtain more power savings than the fixed height GF. However, the benefit is substantially small even in high speed flight. Considering the side effects introduced by the active GF, the fixed height GF may be more preferable. The mechanism for the retractable GF to generate more tail rotor thrust is to increase the lift in advancing side due to the higher dynamic pressure. 展开更多

The system capacity can then be regulated to match the compressor loads to the heating or cooling needs to improve the energy efficiency and lower energy costs. The motor and compression characteristics of WSHP were modeled to include the coupling between the motor speed and the torque characteristics and compression characteristics. An analytical model is given for a variable speed hermetic scroll compressor that describes various factors, such as the drive frequency, suction pressure, and discharge pressure as a function of the compressor speed. The model was validated experimentally using R22 and R134a in an experimental WSHP with variable speed control using frequency conversion. The results show that the analytical model properly describes the variable speed characteristics and provides a control strategy for adjusting the ca- pacity of scroll compressors to match the heat pump or air conditioner operating conditions. 展开更多

To reduce the pitch link loads of variable speed rotors, variable tuning frequency fluid- lastic isolators are proposed. This isolator utilizes the variation of centrifugal force due to the change of rotor speed to change the tuning port area ratio, which can change the tuning frequency of the isolator. A rotor model including the model of fluidlastic isolator is coupled with a fuselage model to predict the steady responses of the rotor system in forward flight. The aeroelastic analyses indicate that distinct performance improvement in pitch link load control can be achieved by the utilization of variable frequency isolators compared with the constant tuning frequency isolators. The 4/rev (per revolution) pitch link load is observed to be reduced by 87.6% compared with the increase of 56.3% by the constant frequency isolator, when the rotor speed is reduced by 16.7%. The isolation ability at different rotor speeds in different flight states is investigated. To achieve overall load reduction within the whole range of rotor speed, the strategy of the variation of tuning frequency is adjusted. The results indicate that the 4/rev pitch link load within the whole rotor speed range is decreased. 展开更多
