To research techniques for removing the water blocking effect caused by hydraulic applications in coal seams, the use of surfactants is proposed, based on the mechanics of the water blocking effect.Centrifugal experiments were used to validate the effects of using surfactants;the results show that after dealing with vacuum saturation with water, the volume of micropores decreases, which results in a larger average pore size, and the volume of transitional pores, mesopores, macropores and total pores increases.Based on the distribution of pore size, the operation mode of ‘‘water infusion after gas extraction, then continuing gas extraction" is recommended to improve the volume of coal mine gas drainage. When the reflectance of vitrinite in coal samples is less than 1,using the surfactants Fast T,1631,APG,BS can mitigate the damage caused by the water blocking effect. But when the reflectance of vitrinite is larger than 1.4,the damage caused by the water blocking effect can be increased. When the surfactant CMC is used in hydraulic applications, the capillary forces of coal samples are almost negative, which means the capillary force is in the same direction as the gas extraction. The direction of capillary forces benefits the gas flow. So,using CMC can play an active role in removing the water blocking effect.Centrifugal experiments confirm that using CMC can effectively remove the water blocking effect, which has a beneficial effect on improving the gas drainage volume. 展开更多

In order to reveal the influence of forced ventilation on the dispersion of droplets ejected from roadheader-mounted external sprayer, the paper studies the air-flowing field and the droplet distribution under the condition of gentle breeze and normal forced ventilation in heading face using the particle tracking technology of computational fluid dynamics(CFD).The results show that air-flowing tendency in the same section presents great comparability in the period of gentle breeze and forced ventilation, and the difference mainly embodies in the different wind velocity. The influence of ventilation on the dispersion of droplets is faint under the gentle breeze condition. The droplet can be evenly distributed around the cutting head. However, under the normal forced ventilation,a large number of droplets will drift to the return air side.At the same time, droplet clusters are predominantly presented in the lower part of windward side and the middle of the leeward side around the cutting head.In contrast, the droplet concentration in other parts around cutting head decreases a lot and the droplets are unable to form close-grained mist curtain. So the dust escape channel is formed. In addition, the simulation results also reveal that the disturbance of air flow on the droplet distribution can be effectively relieved when using ventilation duct with Coanda effect(VDCE).Field experiment results show that the dust suppression efficiency of total dust and respirable dust increases respectively by 10.5%and 9.3%when using VDCE,which proves that it can weaken the influence of airflow on droplet dispersion. 展开更多

Mosquitoes possess the striking ability to walk on water because each of their legs has a huge water supporting force(WSF) that is 23 times their body weight.Aiming at a full understanding of the origins of this extremely large force,in this study,we concentrate on two aspects of it:the intrinsic properties of the leg surface and the active control of the initial stepping angle of the whole leg.Using a measurement system that we developed ourselves, the WSFs for the original leg samples are compared with those whose surface wax and microstructures have been removed and with those of a different stiffness. The results show that leg f exibility plays a dominant role over surface wax and microstructures on the leg surface in creating the supporting force. Moreover,we discuss the dependence relationship between the maximum WSF and the initial stepping angle, which indicates that the mosquito can regulate this angle to increase or decrease the WSF during landing or takeoff. These finding are helpful for uncovering the locomotion mechanism of aquatic insects and for providing inspiration for the design of microfluids miniature boats, biomimetic robots, and microsensors. 展开更多

Around 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans with depths that exceed several kilometers, while continents are geographically enclosed by these vast bodies of water. The principle of fluid mechanics stipulates that water yields pressure everywhere in the container that holds it, and the water pressure against the wall of container generates force. Ocean basins are naturally gigantic containers of water, in which continents form the walls of the containers. In this study, we present that the ocean water pressure against the walls of continents generates enormous force, and determine the distribution of this force around continents and estimate its amplitude to be of the order of 1017 N per kilometer of continent width. Our modelling suggests that the stresses yielded by this force are mostly concentrated on the upper part of the continental crust, and their magnitudes reach up to 2.0 - 6.0 MPa. Our results suggest that the force may have significantly impacted the dynamics of continent (lithospheric plate) and its evolution. 展开更多

Plate motion representing a remarkable Earth process is widely attributed to several primary forces such as ridge push and slab pull. Recently, we have presented that the ocean water pressure against the wall of continents may generate enormous force on continents. Continents are physically fixed on the top of the lithosphere that has been already broken into individual plates, this attachment enables the force to be laterally transferred to the lithospheric plates. In this study, we combine the force and the existing plate driving forces (i.e., ridge push, slab pull, collisional, and shearing) to account for plate motion. We show that the modelled movements for the South American, African, North American, Eurasian, Australian, Pacific plates are well agreement with the observed movements in both speed and azimuth, with a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of the modelled speed against the observed speed of 0.91, 3.76, 2.77, 2.31, 7.43, and 1.95 mm/yr, respectively. 展开更多

In recent years, urbanization has accelerated and the gap between urban water supply and demand has become more significant. This phenomenon has led to greater demands on urban water resource management. Thus, analyses of the forces that drive urban water demand growth can help efficient management of urban water resources. "Jing-Jin-Ji" refers to the district composed of Beijing and Tianjin, municipality as well as Hebei Province, which is among the political and economic centers of China. The traditional analysis of driving force for water resources often consider cities as independent individuals and ignores the interaction between them. Such method cannot describe the spatial distribution of regional water demand. In this study, the water demand field theory is used to construct water demand and social development fields for the Jing-Jin-Ji district with relevant indicators. The distribution trends of the two fields, and the correlation of their intensities, are then analyzed. Principal component analysis is used to specifically determine the forces that drive water demand at different stages of development. Results indicate that the water demand field theory can accurately describe spatial variations in water demand intensity in the study area. The main driving force for water demand in the Jing-Jin-Ji district from 2000 to 2014 is the growth of urban population. However,in 2015 and 2016,"GDP of the tertiary industry" overtook it. The results of this study can serve as a basis for regional water demand forecasting, with large potential to be applied to urban water resource management. 展开更多

An improved model for numerically predicting nonlinear wave forces exerted on an offshore structure is pro- posed. In a previous work[9],the authors presented a model for the same purpose with an open boundary condi- tion imposed, where the wave celerity has been defined constant.Generally, the value of wave celerity is time-de- pendent and varying with spatial location. With the present model the wave celerity is evaluated by an upwind dif- ference scheme, which enables the method to be extended to conditions of variable finite water depth, where the value of wave celerity varies with time as the wave approaches the offshore structure. The finite difference method incorporated with the time-stepping technique in time domain developed here makes the numerical evolution effec- tive and stable.Computational examples on interactions between a surface-piercing vertical cylinder and a solitary wave or a cnoidal wave train demonstrates the validity of this program. 展开更多

A low-cost method was used to fabricate superhydrophobic coatings on a macroscopic model ship and the drag-reducing effect was investigated at both low and high speed. Hierarchical structures of the superhydrophobic copper coatings were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). Drag coefficient tests on surfaces with different wettability(superhydrophilic, hydrophilic, hydrophobic and superhy- drophobic surfaces) showed that the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface exhibited a high remarkable drag reduction of 81% at a low speed of 1 mm/s. In the drag-reducing tests with model ship, the superhydrophobic coatings also exhibited around 16% drag reduction at a velocity of 0.3 m/s. 展开更多
