Functionally graded materials(FGMs)are a novel class of composite materials that have attracted significant attention in the field of engineering due to their unique mechanical properties. This study aims to explore the dynamic behaviors of an FGM stepped beam with different boundary conditions based on an efficient solving method.Under the assumptions of the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the governing differential equations of an individual FGM beam are derived with Hamilton’s principle and decoupled via the separation-of-variable approach. Then, the free and forced vibrations of the FGM stepped beam are solved with the transfer matrix method(TMM).Two models,i.e.,a three-level FGM stepped beam and a five-level FGM stepped beam, are considered, and their natural frequencies and mode shapes are presented. To demonstrate the validity of the method in this paper, the simulation results by ABAQUS are also given. On this basis, the detailed parametric analyses on the frequencies and dynamic responses of the three-level FGM stepped beam are carried out.The results show the accuracy and efficiency of the TMM. 展开更多

An analytical method for analyzing the thermal vibration of multi-directional functionally graded porous rectangular plates in fluid media with novel porosity patterns is developed in this study.Mechanical properties of MFG porous plates change according to the length, width, and thickness directions for various materials and the porosity distribution which can be widely applied in many fields of engineering and defence technology.Especially, new porous rules that depend on spatial coordinates and grading indexes are proposed in the present work.Applying Hamilton's principle and the refined higher-order shear deformation plate theory, the governing equation of motion of an MFG porous rectangular plate in a fluid medium(the fluid-plate system)is obtained. The fluid velocity potential is derived from the boundary conditions of the fluid-plate system and is used to compute the extra mass. The GalerkinVlasov solution is used to solve and give natural frequencies of MFG porous plates with various boundary conditions in a fluid medium. The validity and reliability of the suggested method are confirmed by comparing numerical results of the present work with those from available works in the literature. The effects of different parameters on the thermal vibration response of MFG porous rectangular plates are studied in detail. These findings demonstrate that the behavior of the structure within a liquid medium differs significantly from that within a vacuum medium.Thereby, they offer appropriate operational approaches for the structure when employed in various mediums. 展开更多

Natural fibers have been extensively researched as reinforcement materials in polymers on account of their environmental and economic advantages in comparison with synthetic fibers in the recent years.Bamboo fibers are renowned for their good mechanical properties, abundance, and short cycle growth. As beams are one of the fundamental structural components and are susceptible to mechanical loads in engineering applications, this paper performs a study on the free vibration and buckling responses of bamboo fiber reinforced composite(BFRC)beams on the elastic foundation.Three different functionally graded(FG)layouts and a uniform one are the considered distributions for unidirectional long bamboo fibers across the thickness. The elastic properties of the composite are determined with the law of mixture.Employing Hamilton’s principle, the governing equations of motion are obtained. The generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM)is then applied to the equations to obtain the results. The achieved outcomes exhibit that the natural frequency and buckling load values vary as the fiber volume fractions and distributions, elastic foundation stiffness values, and boundary conditions(BCs)and slenderness ratio of the beam change.Furthermore,a comparative study is conducted between the derived analysis outcomes for BFRC and homogenous polymer beams to examine the effectiveness of bamboo fibers as reinforcement materials, demonstrating the significant enhancements in both vibration and buckling responses, with the exception of natural frequencies for cantilever beams on the Pasternak foundation with the FG-◇fiber distribution.Eventually, the obtained analysis results of BFRC beams are also compared with those for carbon nanotube reinforced composite(CNTRC)beams found in the literature, indicating that the buckling loads and natural frequencies of BFRC beams are lower than those of CNTRC beams. 展开更多

A three-dimensional(3D)thermomechanical vibration model is developed for rotating pre-twisted functionally graded(FG)microbeams according to the refined shear deformation theory(RSDT)and the modified couple stress theory(MCST).The material properties are assumed to follow a power-law distribution along the chordwise direction. The model introduces one axial stretching variable and four transverse deflection variables including two pure bending components and two pure shear ones. The complex modal analysis and assumed mode methods are used to solve the governing equations of motion under different boundary conditions(BCs).Several examples are presented to verify the effectiveness of the developed model.By coupling the slenderness ratio, gradient index, rotation speed, and size effect with the pre-twisted angle, the effects of these factors on the thermomechanical vibration of the microbeam with different BCs are investigated. It is found that with the increase in the pre-twisted angle, the critical slenderness ratio and gradient index corresponding to the thermal instability of the microbeam increase, while the critical material length scale parameter(MLSP)and rotation speed decrease. The sensitivity of the fundamental frequency to temperature increases with the increasing slenderness ratio and gradient index, and decreases with the other increasing parameters. Moreover, the size effect can suppress the dynamic stiffening effect and enhance the Coriolis effect. Finally, the mode transition is quantitatively demonstrated by a modal assurance criterion(MAC). 展开更多

A metamaterial vibration isolator, termed as wave-insulating isolator,is proposed, which preserves enough load-bearing capability and offers ultra-low and broad bandgaps for greatly enhanced wave insulation. It consists of plate-shaped metacells, whose symmetric and antisymmetric local resonant modes offer several low and broad mode bandgaps although the complete bandgap remains high and narrow. The bandgap mechanisms, vibration isolation properties, effects of key parameters, and robustness to complex conditions are clarified. As experimentally demonstrated, the wave-insulating isolator can improve the vibration insulation in the ranges of[50 Hz,180 Hz]and[260 Hz,400 Hz]by 15 dB and 25 dB,respectively,in contrast to the conventional isolator with the same first resonant frequency. 展开更多

The phenomenon of electrical attraction and repulsion between charged particles is well known, and described mathematically by Coulomb’s Law, yet until now there has been no explanation for why this occurs. There has been no mechanistic explanation that reveals what causes the charged particles to accelerate, either towards or away from each other. This paper gives a detailed explanation of the phenomena of electrical attraction and repulsion based on my previous work that determined the exact wave-function solutions for both the Electron and the Positron. It is revealed that the effects are caused by wave interactions between the wave functions that result in Electromagnetic reflections of parts of the particle’s wave functions, causing a change in their momenta. 展开更多

Particles have properties that uniquely characterize them from one another, such as mass, charge and spin. Charged particles have associated Electric and Magnetic fields. Also, every moving particle has a De Broglie wavelength determined by its mass and velocity. This paper shows that all of these properties of a particle can be derived from a single wave function equation for that particle. Wave functions for the Electron and the Positron are presented and principles are provided that can be used to calculate the wave functions of all the fundamental particles in Physics. Fundamental particles such as electrons and positrons are considered to be point particles in the Standard Model of Physics and are not considered to have a structure. This paper demonstrates that they do indeed have structure and that this structure extends into the space around the particle’s center (in fact, they have infinite extent), but with rapidly diminishing energy density with the distance from that center. The particles are formed from Electromagnetic standing waves, which are stable solutions to the Schrödinger and Classical wave equations. This stable structure therefore accounts for both the wave and particle nature of these particles. In fact, all of their properties such as mass, spin and electric charge, can be accounted for from this structure. These particle properties appear to originate from a single point at the center of the wave function structure, in the same sort of way that the Shell theorem of gravity causes the gravity of a body to appear to all originate from a central point. This paper represents the first two fully characterized fundamental particles, with a complete description of their structure and properties, built up from the underlying Electromagnetic waves that comprise these and all fundamental particles. 展开更多

The warping may become an important factor for the precise transverse vibrations of curved beams. Thus, the first aim of this study is to specify the structural design parameters where the influence of cross-sectional warping becomes great and the first-order shear deformation theory lacks the precision necessary. The outof-plane vibrations of the first-order shear deformation theory are compared with the warping-included vibrations as the curvature and/or thickness increase for symmetric and asymmetric transversely-functionally graded(TFG)curved beams. The second aim is to determine the influence of design parameters on the vibrations. The circular/exact elliptical beams are formed via curved mixed finite elements(MFEs)based on the exact curvature and length. The stress-free conditions are satisfied on three-dimensional(3D)constitutive equations. The variation of functionally graded(FG)material constituents is considered based on the power-law dependence. The cross-sectional warping deformations are defined over a displacement-type FE formulation. The warping-included MFEs(W-MFEs)provide satisfactory 3D structural characteristics with smaller degrees of freedom(DOFs)compared with the brick FEs.The Newmark method is used for the forced vibrations. 展开更多

A typical blasting vibration wave is a composite wave, and its attenuation law is affected by the type of dominant wave component. The purpose of the present study is to establish an attenuation equation of the peak particle velocity(PPV),taking into account the attenuation characteristics of P-,S-and R-waves in the blasting vibration wave.Field blasting tests were carried out as a case to specifically apply the proposed equation. In view of the fact that the discrete properties of rock mass will inevitably cause the uncertainty of blasting vibration,we also carried out a probability analysis of PPV uncertainty, and introduced the concept of reliability to evaluate blasting vibration. The results showed that the established attenuation equation had a higher prediction accuracy, and can be considered as a promising equation implemented on more complex sites. The adopted uncertainty analysis method can comprehensively take account of the attenuation law of blasting vibration measured on site and discrete properties of rock masses. The obtained distribution of the PPV uncertainty factor can quantitatively evaluate the reliability of blasting vibration, which is a powerful and necessary supplement to the PPV attenuation equation. 展开更多

The bending and free vibration of porous functionally graded(PFG)beams resting on elastic foundations are analyzed. The material features of the PFG beam are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness according to the volume fraction of components. The foundation medium is also considered to be linear, homogeneous, and isotropic, and modeled using the Winkler-Pasternak law.The hyperbolic shear deformation theory is applied for the kinematic relations, and the equations of motion are obtained using the Hamilton’s principle. An analytical solution is presented accordingly, assuming that the PFG beam is simply supported.Comparisons with the open literature are implemented to verify the validity of such a formulation. The effects of the elastic foundations, porosity volume percentage and span-to-depth ratio are finally discussed in detail. 展开更多

A nonlocal study of the vibration responses of functionally graded(FG)beams supported by a viscoelastic Winkler-Pasternak foundation is presented. The damping responses of both the Winkler and Pasternak layers of the foundation are considered in the formulation, which were not considered in most literature on this subject, and the bending deformation of the beams and the elastic and damping responses of the foundation as nonlocal by uniting the equivalently differential formulation of well-posed strain-driven(ε-D)and stress-driven(σ-D)two-phase local/nonlocal integral models with constitutive constraints are comprehensively considered, which can address both the stiffness softening and toughing effects due to scale reduction. The generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM)is used to solve the complex eigenvalue problem. After verifying the solution procedure,a series of benchmark results for the vibration frequency of different bounded FG beams supported by the foundation are obtained.Subsequently, the effects of the nonlocality of the foundation on the undamped/damping vibration frequency of the beams are examined. 展开更多

The main goal of this article is to present a new result of a possible approach to the geometrical description of the birth and evolution of the universe. The novelty of the article is that it is possible to explain the nature of supersymmetry in terms of the geometric representation of the wave function and to propose a mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking of the excitation of the universe with different degrees of freedom. It is under such conditions that the well-known spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs and individual excitation acquires mass. At the same time, a phase transition of the first kind occurs with the formation of a new phase. 展开更多

A photon structure is advanced based on the experimental evidence and the vector potential quantization at a single photon level. It is shown that the photon is neither a point particle nor an infinite wave but behaves rather like a local “wave-corpuscle” extended over a wavelength, occupying a minimum quantization volume and guided by a non-local vector potential real wave function. The quantized vector potential oscillates over a wavelength with circular left or right polarization giving birth to orthogonal magnetic and electric fields whose amplitudes are proportional to the square of the frequency. The energy  and momentum are carried by the local wave-corpuscle guided by the non-local vector potential wave function suitably normalized. 展开更多

The main problem of quantum mechanics is to elucidate why the probability density is the modulus square of wave function. For the purpose of solving this problem, we explored the possibility of deducing the fundamental equation of quantum mechanics by starting with the probability density. To do so, it is necessary to formulate a new theory of quantum mechanics distinguished from the previous ones. Our investigation shows that it is possible to construct quantum mechanics in phase space as an alternative autonomous formulation and such a possibility enables us to study quantum mechanics by starting with the probability density rather than the wave function. This direction of research is contrary to configuration-space formulation of quantum mechanics starting with the wave function. Our work leads to a full understanding of the wave function as the both mathematically and physically sufficient representation of quantum-mechanical state which supplements information on quantum state given solely by the probability density with phase information on quantum state. The final result of our work is that quantum mechanics in phase space satisfactorily elucidates the relation between the wave function and the probability density by using the consistent procedure starting with the probability density, thus corroborating the ontological interpretation of the wave function and withdrawing a main assumption of quantum mechanics. 展开更多

A rigorous analytical model is developed for simulating the vibration behaviors of large-diameter openended pipe piles(OEPPs)and surrounding soil undergoing high-strain impact loading. To describe the soil behavior, the soil along pile shaft is divided into slip and nonslip zones and the base soil is modeled as a fictitious-soil pile(FSP)to account for the wave propagation in the soil.True soil properties are adopted and slippage at the pile-soil interface is considered, allowing realistic representation of largediameter OEPP mechanics. The developed model is validated by comparing with conventional models and finite element method(FEM).It is further used to successfully simulate and interpret the behaviors of a steel OEPP during the offshore field test.It is found that the variation in the vertical vibrations of shaft soil along radial direction is significant for large-diameter OEPPs,and the velocity amplitudes of the internal and external soil attenuate following different patterns. The shaft soil motion may not attenuate with depth due to the soil slippage, while the wave attenuation at base soil indicates an influence depth, with a faster attenuation rate than that in the pile. The findings from the current study should aid in simulating the vibration behaviors of large-diameter OEPP-soil system under high-strain dynamic loading. 展开更多

This study is focused on the effect of vibration induced by moving trains in tunnels on the surrounding ground and structures.A three-dimensional finite element model is established for a one-track railway tunnel and an adjacent twelve-storey building frame by using commercial software Midas GTS-NX(2019)and Midas Gen.This study considered the moving load effect of a complete train, which varies with space as well as with time. The effect of factors such as train speed, overburden pressure on the tunnel and variation in soil properties are studied in the time domain. As a result, the variations in horizontal and vertical acceleration for two different sites,i.e.,the free ground surface(without structure)and the area containing the structure, are compared. Also, the displacement pattern of the raft foundation is plotted for different train velocities. At lower speeds, the heaving phenomenon is negligible, but as the speed increases, both the heaving and differential settlement increase in the foundation. This study demonstrates that the effect of moving train vibrations should be considered in the design of new nearby structures and proper ground improvement should be considered for existing structures. 展开更多

The suppression of low-frequency vibration and noise has always been an important issue in a wide range of engineering applications. To address this concern,a novel square hierarchical honeycomb metamaterial capable of reducing low-frequency noise has been developed.By combining Bloch’s theorem with the finite element method, the band structure is calculated.Numerical results indicate that this metamaterial can produce multiple low-frequency bandgaps within 500 Hz,with a bandgap ratio exceeding 50%.The first bandgap spans from 169.57 Hz to 216.42 Hz.To reveal the formation mechanism of the bandgap,a vibrational mode analysis is performed.Numerical analysis demonstrates that the bandgap is attributed to the suppression of elastic wave propagation by the vibrations of the structure’s two protruding corners and overall expansion vibrations.Additionally, detailed parametric analyses are conducted to investigate the effect ofθ,i.e.,the angle between the protruding corner of the structure and the horizontal direction,on the band structures and the total effective bandgap width. It is found that reducingθis conducive to obtaining lower frequency bandgaps. The propagation characteristics of elastic waves in the structure are explored by the group velocity, phase velocity, and wave propagation direction. Finally, the transmission characteristics of a finite periodic structure are investigated experimentally. The results indicate significant acceleration amplitude attenuation within the bandgap range, confirming the structure’s excellent low-frequency vibration suppression capability. 展开更多
