However, the influence of educating patients on these portals’ functionality on clinical outcomes, such as all-cause readmission rates, remains underexplored. Objective: This research proposal tested the hypothesis that educating a subset of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), on how to effectively access and utilize the functionality of web-based patient portals can reduce all-cause readmission rates. Methods: We performed a prospective, quasi-experimental study at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, USA;dividing participants into an intervention group, receiving education about accessing and navigating “My Chart”, the Bon Secours Web based portal, and a control group, receiving standard care. We then compared 30-day readmission rates, patient engagement, and self-management behaviors between the groups. Data was analyzed using statistical tests to assess the intervention’s impact. Results: We projected that educated patients will exhibit lower readmission rates, improved engagement, and better self-management. The results of the study showed that there was a significant decrease in 30-day readmissions in the intervention group in comparison with the control group (22.7% and 40.9%, respectively). This reduction of 18. 2% of readmissions evaluated here for a trial of meaningful clinical effect is statistically insignificant (p = 0. 184). The practical significance of the intervention is considered small-to-moderate (Cramer V = 0. 20) suggesting that the observed difference has a potential clinical importance even though the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: These results imply that the proposed educational intervention might have a positive impact on readmissions;nonetheless, the patient’s characteristics that make him or her capable of readmission cannot be changed and are assessed by the RoR (Risk of Readmission) score. The potential impact of the intervention may be offset, in part, by these baseline risk factors. The study’s power may be limited by sample size, potentially affecting the detection of significant differences. Future studies with larger, multi-center samples and longer follow-up periods are recommended to confirm these findings.展开更多

This paper presents two efficient methods for this purpose: division transmission and progressive transmission methods. In division transmission method, a map can be divided into several parts, called “tiles”, and only tiles can be transmitted at the request of a client. In progressive transmission method, a map can be split into several phase views based on the significance of vertices, and a server produces a target object and then transmits it progressively when this spatial object is requested from a client. In order to achieve these methods, the algorithms, “tile division”, “priority order estimation” and the strategies for data transmission are proposed in this paper, respectively. Compared with such traditional methods as “map total transmission” and “layer transmission”, the web based GIS data transmission, proposed in this paper, is advantageous in the increase of the data transmission efficiency by a great margin.展开更多

Unlike traditional learning environments, web based education applications store large amount of data. This growing availability of data stimulated the emergence of a new field called educational data mining. In this study, the classification method is implemented on a data that is obtained from a company which uses web based education to train their employees. The authors' aim is to find out the most critical factors that influence the users' success. For the classification of the data, two decision tree algorithms, Classification and Regression Tree (CART) and Quick, Unbiased and Efficient Statistical Tree (QUEST) are applied. According to the results, assurance of a certificate at the end of the training is found to be the most critical factor that influences the users' success. Position, number of work years and the education level of the user, are also found as important factors.展开更多

As in many countries, Malaysia is also espousing internet as a platform of new possibilities for information access and sharing. Thus web based decision tools are pertinent in managing water, which is becoming a source of conflict between domestic, industry and agricultural use in this emerging technological and information age. Decision Support System (DSS) created in the past was theoretically acceptable but practically not effective in the transfer of scientific knowledge from research labs to the end-users to support them in decision making. The Web Based Paddy Irrigation Productivity Assessment (WebPIPA) is an example of DSS created to provide an effective conduit for the transfer of scientific knowledge from research labs to the end-users to support them in decision making. Mathematical model developed for aiding irrigation decisions must be oriented towards addressing various issues in addition to the scientific ones for better acceptability. All government and private agencies, researchers, station users, farmers, investors and buyers related to this study area will be able to access and share the database through the internet. In this paper, a data transfer mechanism over the Internet is proposed for real time web based applications. The mechanism incorporates the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) to provide a flexible and efficient data format. Heterogeneous transfer data is classified into light and heavy data, which are stored using XML and HDF respectively; the HDF data format is then mapped to Java Document Object Model (JDOM) objects in XML in the Java environment. These JDOM data objects are sent across computer networks with the support of the Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI) data transfer infrastructure. Client's defined data priority levels are implemented in RMI, which guides a server to transfer data objects at different priorities. A remote monitoring system for an industrial reactor process simulator is used as a case study to illustrate the proposed data transfer mechanism.展开更多

But in a premier system, only static image processing can be provided with the limitation of web technology. The development of Java and CORBA (common object request broker architecture) overcomes the shortcoming of the web static application and makes the dynamic processing of medical images on the web available. To develop an open solution of distributed computing, we integrate the Java, and web with the CORBA and present a web-based medical image dynamic processing methed, which adopts Java technology as the language to program application and components of the web and utilies the CORBA architecture to cope with heterogeneous property of a complex distributed system. The method also provides a platform-independent, transparent processing architecture to implement the advanced image routines and enable users to access large dataset and resources according to the requirements of medical applications. The experiment in this paper shows that the medical image dynamic processing method implemented on the web by using Java and the CORBA is feasible.展开更多

Further enhancements in nuclear education are being considered through the use of distance learning technologies. The purpose of this work is to explore distance learning related tools to determine if they can provide an enhanced learning environment for nuclear education. In this work, a set of tools are examined that can be used to augment or replace the traditional lecture method. These tools are Mediasite, Adobe Connect, Elluminate, and Camtasia. All four tools have recording capabilities that allow the students to experience the exchange of information in different ways. This paper compares recent experiences with each of these tools in providing nuclear engineering education and assesses the various constraints and impacts on delivery through direct feedback from students and instructors. In general, the tools were found to be useful for mature students on the condition that the lecturer was comfortable with the tools and in some cases, adequate support from IT groups was provided.展开更多
