Daqing Wetland was contaminated by heavy metals for holding lots of industrial and domestic waste water. Due to their high stability and non-degradation, heavy metals are possible to gather in human body through the food chain and then threaten health. Water samples were collected from Longfeng Wetland and lake marshes in the vicinity of Daqing City. The contents of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni) were determined, and the contamination degrees were evaluated simultaneously. The results indicate that heavy metals of Zn, Ni, Cd, Cr and Pd have contaminated the Longfeng Wetland severely. In addition the concentrations of Cr and Cd in some lakes around oil wells are excessively high, and have overrun the grade V based on the threshold values of surface water given by the National Environmental Protection Agency of China. Some measures have to be taken to tackle heavy metal contamination of Longfeng Wetland and lake marshes in Daqing City. 展开更多

In this study, remote sensing data of Wuhan City,Hubei Province,China in 1996-2001 were selected to ex-tract wetland landscape information.Several landscape indices were used to evaluate the changes of landscape pattern within the five years, including patch number, patch density, patch fractal dimension, landscape diversity, dominance, evenness, and fragmentation indexes. Then, transformation probabilities of wetland landscapes into non-wetland land-scapes were calculated based on Markov Model, and on these grounds the relationship between changes of wetland landscape pattern and urban construction was analyzed. The results showed that fragmentation degree of all wetland types increased, lake area declined, and dominance of natural wetland decreased. The reasons for these results were mainly because of urban construction.According to the features of abundant wetland in Wuhan City,we suggested that protection of wetland landscape should cooperate with urban construction, which means wetland should become im-portant part of urban landscape. 展开更多

We investigated the spatial distribution (horizontal and vertical concentrations) of copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and cadmium (Cd) in five wetland types (mudflat, aquaculture wetland, water area, farmland wetland and mangrove) from three areas (Ningde, Fuding, and Xiapu), China. Cu concentrations in five wetland types descended in the order: farm wetland, mudflat, aquaculture, water area and mangrove. Pb concentrations decreased in the order: aquaculture, mangrove, farm wetland, mudflat, and water area. Zn content decreased in the order: farm wetland, water area, aquaculture, mudflat and mangrove, and Cd content decreased as follows: mangrove, aquacul- ture, water area, rnudflat, and farm wetland. Comparison of the concentrations of the same heavy metals in different areas showed that the highest Cu (63.75 mg kg-1) and Zn (152.32mgkg-1) concentrations occurred in Ningdecoastal wetlands; Pb (110.58 mg kg-1) and Cd (2.81 mg kg-1) contents were highest in Fuding wetlands, and the average contents of all heavy metals were very low in Xiapu wetlands. Examination of the vertical distribution showed that the Cu content was high in all mudflat layers; Pb and Cd concentrations were highest in aquaculture and mangrove wetlands, respectively, and Zn content was highest in farm wetlands. The spatial distribution of Cu and Zn contents for different areas decreased as follows: Ningde 〉 Fuding 〉 Xiapu, for Pb and Cd were most concentrated in Fuding coastal wetlands. Concentrations of Zn and Cu were highly correlated, while Zn and Cu were not significantly correlated with Pb. 展开更多

It is very significant for urban development and urban wetland protection and utilization to probe into the process and reasons of urban wetland landscape dynamics. Taking the information of remote sensing and detailed land survey data as the basic information sources, with the help of RS and GIS, according to the principles and methods of landscape ecology, this paper analyzed wetland landscape pattern dynamics and its reasons in Kaifeng City, Henan Province of China, from 1987 to 2002. The results show that the total wetland area in Kaifeng City firstly reduced by 20.1% from 1987 to 1990 and then increased from 1990 to 2002, with an average annual growth rate of 3.3%. At the same time, landscape fragment degree and landscape dominance degree increased, respectively from 0.64 to 0.72 and from 0.3754 to 0.5563, but mean patch area, maximum patch area, patch fractal dimension reduced. As far as single landscape element concerned, fi'om 1987 to 2002, patch area, patch number, patch density, patch shape and patch location changed in varying degrees in all wetland types in Kaifeng City, among which rice field changed most and others relatively less. In the recent 20 years, rice fields, lake wetlands, puddles and ponds had a higher stability, but river and bottomland wetlands were mostly transformed to land use types. The change of wetland landscape pattern was the result of the combined action of the Huanghe (Yellow) River, urban expansion, wide cultivation of rice, and rapid development of fishery. Among them human activities were the main driving factors for wetland landscape changes. 展开更多

For example, the wetlands of the city have been shrinking. This study evaluates wetland changes in Dhaka Metropolitan Area (DMA), Bangladesh, between 1978 and 2009. Spatial and temporal dynamics of wetland changes were quantified using four Landsat images, a supervised classi?cation algorithm and the post-classi?cation change detection technique in GIS environment. Accuracy of the Landsat-derived wetland maps ranged from 87% to 92.5%. The analysis revealed that area of wetland and Rivers & Khals in Dhaka city decreased significantly over the last 30 years by 76.67% and 18.72% respectively. This changing trend of wetlands makes the drainage system of Dhaka City vulnerable, creating water logging problems and their consequences. Land filling and encroachment were recognized to be the main reasons for shrinking of the wetlands in the city. Development and alteration of the existing water bodies should consider the natural hydrological conditions. 展开更多

Wetlands provide many important services to human society, but are at the same time ecologically sensitive and adaptive systems, and are under heavy pressure. As a wetland city, Shanghai city has various types of natural wetlands (chiefly, includes coastal, riverine, lacustrine, and reservoir and pond wetlands), which account for 23.5% of total areas. Meanwhile, Shanghai is a metropolitan city, being confronted with the pressure of port expansion and urban and industrial sprawl, just like the other megalopolises in the world. Based on our earlier study on estimating the ecological service values of wetlands in Shanghai, this paper analyzed the ecological functions of the wetland city, such as nutrient cycling, water regulation and supply, food supply, disturbance control, water treatment, habitats and refugia, aesthetic, education and culture, tidal flats and potential land resources. Unfortunately, the wetland function was being degraded and the ecosystem service was discounted accordingly because of over-reclamation, over-fishing, water pollution, and rapid urbanization in the city. It’s therefore recommended that, to improve the environment of Shanghai ciry, and make the ecosystems sustainable function appropriately, the effective wetland management strategies should be taken. 展开更多

By analyzing the climate records of Kunming from 1957 to 2016, Kunming’s average temperature has been found to be increasing in recent 65 years. The key problem lies in the temperature rise in recent 10 or more years by 0.4 ℃/10a and the annual range decrease at the same time, represented as the elevation of the lowest temperature and increasingly warmer winter in Kunming. With the warming climate, the precipitation has suffered a prominent fall, by 18.05 mm/a in the past 14 years. The relative humidity is in direct proportion to the precipitation, which explains less water and drier climate in Kunming. With “One increase and two decreases” of the three key climate indexes changes in Kunming in the past 65 years, this paper analyzed the necessity and general situation of the sponge city construction in the city, proposed the overall planning of sponge city construction at the macro level, selected the sponge technology based on the urban construction land types, and planned the regulation facilities based on the catchment area and green space structure. Moreover, the paper explored the sponge city planning at the meso level and the sponge city eco-engineering technology at the micro level. 展开更多

Smart cities improve the quality of life of people by utilizing the benefits of Information and communication technology(ICT)and the Internet of things(IoT).The applications of the smart city often rely on the cloud for services. No doubt cloud provides an ample amount of resources as a service but still it has limitations in terms of unreliable latency, mobility, and location awareness due to their multi-hop distance from the IoT devices.Fog computing avoids these limitations by providing services nearer to the edges. In this work we investigate the already proposed IoT-Fog based application specific smart city architectures and review them based on scalability, heterogeneity, mobility, energy conservation, latency, and security.Additionally,we discuss the applications and highlight the challenges that fog computing faces. We also present a case study of a smart city scenario with multiple applications of IoT. 展开更多

Landscape of Dhaka city - one of the fastest growing mega cities in the world, is undergoing continuous changes and modifications due to progressive urbanization. Pre- and post-urban changes of water bodies in the city were studied using aerial photographs and SPOT images in GIS environment. In 1968, the total area of marshy and peaty inundated low-lying areas was 133 km2, which was depicted to be 67 km2 in the year 2001. The total area of inland lakes as estimated from the aerial photos of 1968 was 5.1 km2 which became 1.8 km2 in the year 2001 as seen in SPOT image. More than 50% of the wetland area reduced over the period 1968 to 2001. Changes of the water body mostly occurred in the regions where majority of the urban expan-sion took place. The urban infrastructures filled and/or compartmentalized the water bodies, causing water loggings problem during wet-season in various part of the city. Development and alteration of the existing water bodies should consider the natural hydrological conditions so that the changes can cope with the artifi-cial intervention. 展开更多
