A rotating packed bed is a typical chemical process enhancement equipment that can strengthen micromixing and mass transfer.During the operation of the rotating packed bed,the nonreactants and products irregularly adhere to the wire mesh packing in the rotor, thus resulting in an imbalance in the vibration of the rotor, which may cause serious damage to the bearing and material leakage. This study proposes a model prediction for estimating the bearing residual life of a rotating packed bed based on rotor imbalance response analysis. This method is used to determine the influence of the mass on the imbalance in the vibration of the rotor on bearing damage. The major influence on rotor vibration was found to be exerted by the imbalanced mass and its distribution radius,as revealed by the results of orthogonal experiments.Through implementing finite element analysis, the imbalance response curve for the rotating packed bed rotor was obtained, and a correlation among rotor imbalance mass, distribution radius of imbalance mass, and bearing residue life was established via data fitting. The predicted value of the bearing life can be used as the reference basis for an early safety warning of a rotating packed bed to effectively avoid accidents. 展开更多

Earthquake investigations have shown that near-fault pulse-like(NF-P)ground motions have unique characteristics compared to near-fault non-pulse-like(NF-NP)and far-field(FF)ground motions. It is necessary to study the seismic response of pile-supported wharf(PSW)structures under NF-P ground motions. In this study,a three-dimensional finite element numerical model is created to simulate a PSW.By imparting three types of ground motion, the engineering demand parameters(EDPs)of PSW under NF-P ground motions were analyzed and compared,in which EDPs are the maximum displacement and bending moment of the piles.Twenty intensity measures(IMs)were selected to characterize the properties of ground motions. The correlation between IMs and EDPs was explored. The results show that the piles present larger displacement and bending moment under NF-P ground motions compared to NF-NP and FF ground motions.None of the IMs have a high correlation with EDPs under NF-P ground motions, and these IMs are more applicable to FF ground motions. The correlation coefficients between EDPs and IMs under three types of ground motion were obtained, which will provide a valuable reference for the seismic design of PSWs. 展开更多

In the past, most studies focused on the static performance, but few on dynamic performance. In this paper, systematic parameter analysis of wind-induced response of conical membrane structures has been performed with nonlinear random simulation method in a time domain, by considering some parameters, such as span, rise-span ratio, prestress of membrane, and characteristic of the approaching wind flow. Case history investigations have shown that pile foundations are more critically damaged in liquefiable soils than non-liquefiable soils. This study examines the differences in seismic response of pile foundations in liquefiable and non-liquefiable soils and their sensitivity to numerical model parameters.A two-dimensional finite element(FE)model is developed to simulate the experiment of a single pile foundation centrifuge in liquefiable soil subjected to earthquake motions and is validated against real-world test results. The differences in soil-pile seismic response of liquefiable and non-liquefiable soils are explored.Specifically, the first-order second-moment method(FOSM)is used for sensitivity analysis of the seismic response. The results show significant differences in seismic response for a soil-pile system between liquefiable and non-liquefiable soil. The seismic responses are found to be significantly larger in liquefiable soil than in non-liquefiable soil. Moreover, the pile bending moment was mainly affected by the kinematic effect in liquefiable soil, while the inertial effect was more significant in non-liquefiable soil. The controlling parameters of seismic response were PGA,soil density, and friction angle in liquefiable soil, while the pile bending moment was mainly controlled by PGA,the friction angle of soil, and shear modulus of loose sand in non-liquefiable soil. 展开更多

Rate capability, peak power, and energy density are of vital importance for the capacitive energy storage(CES)of electrochemical energy devices. The frequency response analysis(FRA)is regarded as an efficient tool in studying the CES.In the present work,a bi-scale impedance transmission line model(TLM)is firstly developed for a single pore to a porous electrode. Not only the TLM of the single pore is reparameterized but also the particle packing compactness is defined in the bi-scale.Subsequently,the CES properties are identified by FRA,focused on rate capability vs.characteristic frequency, peak power vs.equivalent series resistance, and energy density vs.low frequency limiting capacitance for a single pore to a porous electrode.Based on these relationships, the CES properties are numerically simulated and theoretically predicted for a single pore to a porous electrode in terms of intra-particle pore length,intra-particle pore diameter,inter-particle pore diameter, electrolyte conductivity, interfacial capacitance&exponent factor, electrode thickness, electrode apparent surface area, and particle packing compactness. Finally, the experimental diagnosis of four supercapacitors(SCs)with different electrode thicknesses is conducted for validating the bi-scale TLM and gaining an insight into the CES properties for a porous electrode to a single pore. The calculating results suggest,to some extent, the inter-particle pore plays a more critical role than the intra-particle pore in the CES properties such as the rate capability and the peak power density for a single pore to a porous electrode.Hence,in order to design a better porous electrode, more attention should be given to the inter-particle pore. 展开更多

The displacement of transmission tower feet can seriously affect the safe operation of the tower, and the accuracy of structural health monitoring methods is limited at the present stage. The application of deep learning method provides new ideas for structural health monitoring of towers, but the current amount of tower vibration fault data is restricted to provide adequate training data for Deep Learning(DL).In this paper,we propose a DT-DL based tower foot displacement monitoring method, which firstly simulates the wind-induced vibration response data of the tower under each fault condition by finite element method. Then the vibration signal visualization and Data Transfer(DT)are used to add tower fault data samples to solve the problem of insufficient actual data quantity.Subsequently, the dynamic response test is carried out under different tower fault states, and the tower fault monitoring is carried out by the DL method. Finally, the proposed method is compared with the traditional online monitoring method, and it is found that this method can significantly improve the rate of convergence and recognition accuracy in the recognition process. The results show that the method can effectively identify the tower foot displacement state, which can greatly reduce the accidents that occurred due to the tower foot displacement. 展开更多

The flow field induced by internal solitary waves(ISWs)is peculiar wherein water motion occurs in the whole water depth, and the strong shear near the pycnocline can be generated due to the opposite flow direction between the upper and lower layers, which is a potential threat to marine risers. In this paper, the flow field of ISWs is obtained with the Korteweg-de Vries(Kd V)equation for a two-layer fluid system. Then,a linear analysis is performed for the dynamic response of a riser with its two ends simply supported under the action of ISWs.The explicit expressions of the deflection and the moment of the riser are deduced based on the modal superposition method. The applicable conditions of the theoretical expressions are discussed.Through comparisons with the finite element simulations for nonlinear dynamic responses,it is proved that the theoretical expressions can roughly reveal the nonlinear dynamic response of risers under ISWs when the approximation for the linear analysis is relaxed to some extent. 展开更多

The response displacement method(RDM)is recommended for the seismic analysis of underground structures in the transverse direction for many codes, including bases for design of structures-seismic actions for designing geotechnical works(ISO 23469)and code for seismic design of urban rail transit structures(GB 50909-2014).However,there are some obvious limitations in the application of RDM.Springs and the shear stress of the soil could be approximately evaluated for the structures having a simple cross section, such as rectangular and circular structures. It is necessary to propose simplified seismic analysis methods for structures with complex cross sections. This paper refers to the idea of RDM and proposes three generalized response displacement methods(GRDM).In GRDM1,a part of the soil surrounding a structure is selected to generate a generalized underground structure with a rectangular cross section, and the same analysis model as RDM is applied to analyze the responses of the structure. In GRDM2,a hollow soil model without a generalized structure is used to compute the equivalent load caused by the relative displacement of the soil, and the soil-structure interaction model is applied to calculate the responses of the structure. In GRDM3,a continuous soil model is applied to compute the equivalent load caused by the relative displacement and shear stress of the soil, and the soil-structure interaction model is applied to analyze the responses of the structure, which is the same as the model used in GRDM2.The time-history analysis method(THAM)is used to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed simplified methods. Results show that the error of GRDM1 is about 20%,while the error is only 5%for GRDM2 and GRDM3.Among the three proposed methods,GRDM3 has obvious advantages regarding calculation efficiency and accuracy. Therefore,it is recommended to use GRDM3 for the seismic response analysis of underground structures that have conventional simple or complex cross sections. 展开更多

Vibration induced by shield construction can lead to liquefaction of saturated sand.Based on FLAC3D software,a numerical model of tunnel excavation is established and sinusoidal velocity loads with different frequencies are applied to the excavation face. The pattern of the excess pore pressure ratio with frequency,as well as the dynamic response of soil mass under different frequency loads before excavation,is analyzed. When the velocity sinusoidal wave acts on the excavation surface of the shield tunnel with a single sand layer, soil liquefaction occurs. However, the ranges and locations of soil liquefaction are different at different frequencies, which proves that the vibration frequency influences the liquefaction location of the stratum. For sand-clay composite strata with liquefiable layers, the influence of frequency on the liquefaction range is different from that of a single stratum. In the frequency range of 5-30 Hz,the liquefaction area and surface subsidence decrease with an increase in vibration frequency. The research results in this study can be used as a reference in engineering practice for tunneling liquefiable strata with a shield tunneling machine. 展开更多

Viscoelastic damper is an effective passive damping device, which can reduce the seismic response of the structure by increasing the damping and dissipating the vibration energy of structures. It has a wide application prospect in actual structural vibration control because of simple device and economical material. In view of the poor seismic behaviors of assembled frame structure connections, various energy dissipation devices are proposed to improve the seismic performance. The finite element numerical analysis method is adopted to analyze relevant energy dissipation structural parameters. The response spectrum of a 7-story assembled frame structure combined the ordinary steel support, ordinary viscoelastic damper, and viscoelastic damper with displacement amplification device is analyzed. The analysis results show that the mechanical behavior of assembled frame structure with ordinary steel supports are not significantly different from those without energy dissipation devices. The assembled frame structure with viscoelastic damper has better seismic performance and energy dissipation, especially for the viscoelastic damper with displacement amplification devices. The maximum value of inter-story displacement angle decreases by 32.24%;the maximum floor displacement decreases by 31.91%,and the base shear decreases by 13.62%compared with the assembled frame structures without energy dissipation devices. The results show that the seismic fortification ability of the structure is significantly improved, and the overall structure is more uniformly stressed. The damping structure with viscoelastic damper mainly reduces the dynamic response of the structure by increasing the damping coefficient, rather than by changing the natural vibration period of the structure. This paper provides an effective theoretical basis and reference for improving the energy dissipation system and the seismic performance of assembled frame structures. 展开更多

We calculate the multicomponent responses of surface-hole transient electromagnetic method. The methods and models are unsuitable as geoelectric models of conductive surrounding rocks because they are based on regular local targets. We also propose a calculation and analysis scheme based on numerical simulations of the subsurface transient electromagnetic fields. In the modeling of the electromagnetic fields, the forward modeling simulations are performed by using the finite-difference time-domain method and the discrete image method, which combines the Gaver–Stehfest inverse Laplace transform with the Prony method to solve the initial electromagnetic fields. The precision in the iterative computations is ensured by using the transmission boundary conditions. For the response analysis, we customize geoelectric models consisting of near-borehole targets and conductive wall rocks and implement forward modeling simulations. The observed electric fields are converted into induced electromotive force responses using multicomponent observation devices. By comparing the transient electric fields and multicomponent responses under different conditions, we suggest that the multicomponent-induced electromotive force responses are related to the horizontal and vertical gradient variations of the transient electric field at different times. The characteristics of the response are determined by the varying the subsurface transient electromagnetic fields, i.e., diffusion, attenuation and distortion, under different conditions as well as the electromagnetic fields at the observation positions. The calculation and analysis scheme of the response consider the surrounding rocks and the anomalous field of the local targets. It therefore can account for the geological data better than conventional transient field response analysis of local targets. 展开更多

The present work aims to assess earthquake-induced earth-retaining(ER)wall displacement. This study is on the dynamics analysis of various earth-retaining wall designs in hollow precast concrete panels, reinforcement concrete facing panels, and gravity-type earth-retaining walls. The finite element(FE)simulations utilized a 3D plane strain condition to model full-scale ER walls and numerous nonlinear dynamics analyses. The seismic performance of differentmodels, which includes reinforcement concrete panels and gravity-type and hollowprecast concrete ER walls, was simulated and examined using the FE approach. It also displays comparative studies such as stress distribution, deflection of the wall, acceleration across the wall height, lateral wall displacement, lateral wall pressure, and backfill plastic strain.Three components of the created ER walls were found throughout this research procedure. One is a granular reinforcement backfill, while the other is a wall-facing panel and base foundation. The dynamic response effects of varied earth-retaining walls have also been studied. It was discovered that the facing panel of the model significantly impacts the earthquake-induced displacement of ER walls. The proposed analytical model’s validity has been evaluated and compared with the reinforcement concrete facing panels,gravity-type ER wall, scientifically available data, and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials(AASHTO)guidelines results based on FE simulation. The results of the observations indicate that the hollow prefabricated concrete ER wall is the most feasible option due to its lower displacement and high-stress distribution compared to the two types. The methodology and results of this study establish standards for future analogous investigations and professionals, particularly in light of the increasing computational capabilities of desktop computers. 展开更多

Segmentally assembled bridges are increasinglyfinding engineering applications in recent years due to their unique advantages, especially as urban viaducts.Vehicle loads are one of the most important variable loads acting on bridge structures.Accordingly, the influence of overloaded vehicles on existing assembled bridge structures is an urgent concern at present. This paper establishes thefinite element model of the segmentally assembled bridge based on ABAQUS software and analyzes the influence of vehicle overload on an assembled girder bridge struc-ture.First,afinite element model corresponding to the target bridge is established based on ABAQUS software, and the load is controlled to simulate vehicle movement in each area of the traveling zone at different times.Sec-ond,the key cross-sections of segmental girder bridges are monitored in real time based on the force character-istics of continuous girder bridges, and they are compared with the simulation results. Finally,a material damage ontology model is introduced, and the structural damage caused by different overloading rates is compared and analyzed. Results show that thefinite element modeling method is accurate by comparing with on-site measured data, and it is suitable for the numerical simulation of segmental girder bridges;Dynamic sensors installed at 1/4L,1/2L,and 3/4L of the segmental girder main beams could be used to identify the dynamic response of segmental girder bridges; The bottom plate of the segmental girder bridge is mostly damaged at the position where the length of the precast beam section changes and the midspan position. With the increase in load, damage in the direction of the bridge develops faster than that in the direction of the transverse bridge.Thefindings of this study can guide maintenance departments in the management and maintenance of bridges and vehicles. 展开更多

This paper examines how cybersecurity is developing and how it relates to more conventional information security. Although information security and cyber security are sometimes used synonymously, this study contends that they are not the same. The concept of cyber security is explored, which goes beyond protecting information resources to include a wider variety of assets, including people [1]. Protecting information assets is the main goal of traditional information security, with consideration to the human element and how people fit into the security process. On the other hand, cyber security adds a new level of complexity, as people might unintentionally contribute to or become targets of cyberattacks. This aspect presents moral questions since it is becoming more widely accepted that society has a duty to protect weaker members of society, including children [1]. The study emphasizes how important cyber security is on a larger scale, with many countries creating plans and laws to counteract cyberattacks. Nevertheless, a lot of these sources frequently neglect to define the differences or the relationship between information security and cyber security [1]. The paper focus on differentiating between cybersecurity and information security on a larger scale. The study also highlights other areas of cybersecurity which includes defending people, social norms, and vital infrastructure from threats that arise from online in addition to information and technology protection. It contends that ethical issues and the human factor are becoming more and more important in protecting assets in the digital age, and that cyber security is a paradigm shift in this regard [1]. 展开更多

Due to the size effects of rockfill materials, the settlement difference between numerical simulation and in situ monitoring of rockfill dams is a topic of general concern. The constitutive model parameters obtained from laboratory triaxial tests often underestimate the deformation of high rockfill dams. Therefore, constitutive model parameters obtained by back analysis were used to calculate and predict the long-term deformation of rockfill dams.Instead of using artificial neural networks (ANNs), the response surface method (RSM) was employed to replace the finite element simulation used in the optimization iteration.Only 27 training samples were required for RSM, improving computational efficiency compared with ANN, which required 300 training samples.RSM can be used to describe the relationship between the constitutive model parameters and dam settlements. The inversion results of the Shuibuya concrete face rockfill dam (CFRD) show that the calculated settlements agree with the measured data, indicating the accuracy and efficiency of RSM. 展开更多

The wind-induced responses of a large-scale membrane structure, Expo Boulevard, are evaluated in this study. To obtain the wind pressure distribution on the roof surface, a wind tunnel test is performed. A brief analysis of wind pressure on the membrane roof is conducted first and then an analysis of the wind-induced responses of the structure is carried out using a numerical integral method in the time domain. In the process of calculation, the geometrical nonlinearity is taken into account. Results indicate that mean, RSM and peak values of the structure responses increase nonlinearly while the approaching flow velocity increases. Strong nonlinear characteristics are observed in the displacement responses, whereas the responses of nodal stress and cable axial force show minimal nonlinear properties when the membrane structure is subjected to wind loads. Different values of the damping ratio only have a minimal impact on the RSM response of the structure because the background component is a dominant part of the total dynamic response and the resonant component is too small. As the damping ratio increases from 0.02 to 0.05, the RMS responses of vertical displacement, nodal stress and cable axial force decrease by 8.1%, 6.7% and 17.9%, respectively. Since the mean component plays a significant role in the wind-induced response, the values of the gust response factor are not high for Expo Boulevard. 展开更多

Two non-probabilistic, set-theoretical methods for determining the maximum and minimum impulsive responses of structures to uncertain-but-bounded impulses are presented. They are, respectively, based on the theories of interval mathematics and convex models. The uncertain-but-bounded impulses are assumed to be a convex set, hyper-rectangle or ellipsoid. For the two non-probabilistic methods, less prior information is required about the uncertain nature of impulses than the probabilistic model. Comparisons between the interval analysis method and the convex model, which are developed as an anti-optimization problem of finding the least favorable impulsive response and the most favorable impulsive response, are made through mathematical analyses and numerical calculations. The results of this study indicate that under the condition of the interval vector being determined from an ellipsoid containing the uncertain impulses, the width of the impulsive responses predicted by the interval analysis method is larger than that by the convex model; under the condition of the ellipsoid being determined from an interval vector containing the uncertain impulses, the width of the interval impulsive responses obtained by the interval analysis method is smaller than that by the convex model. 展开更多

It is widely recognized that nonlinear time-history analysis constitutes the most accurate way to simulate the response of structures subjected to strong levels of seismic excitation. This analytical method is based on sound underlying principles and has the capability to reproduce the intrinsic inelastic dynamic behavior of structures. Nonetheless, comparisons with experimental results from large-scale testing of structures are still needed, in order to ensure adequate levels of confidence in this numerical methodology. The fiber modelling approach employed in the current endeavor inherently accounts for geometric nonlinearities and material inelasticity, without a need for calibration of plastic hinges mechanisms, typical in concentrated plasticity models. The resulting combination of analysis accuracy and modelling simplicity, allows thus to overcome the perhaps not fully justifiable sense of complexity associated to nonlinear dynamic analysis. The fiber-based modelling approach is employed in the framework of a finite element program downloaded from the Intemet for seismic response analysis of framed structures. The reliability and accuracy of the program are demonstrated by numerically reproducing pseudo-dynamic tests on a four span continuous deck concrete bridge. Modelling assumptions are discussed, together with their implications on numerical results of the nonlinear time-history analyses, which were found to be in good agreement with experimental results. 展开更多

The layered soil column was divided into multiple sub-soils with a different viscous damping matrix according to the shear velocities as the soil properties were significantly different. It was necessary to use a combination of other one-dimensional or three-dimensional nonlinear seismic ground analysis programs to confirm the applicability of nonlinear seismic ground motion response analysis procedures in soft soil or for strong earthquakes. The accuracy of the three-dimensional soil column finite element method was verified by dynamic centrifuge model testing under different peak accelerations of the earthquake. As a result, nonlinear seismic ground motion response analysis procedures were improved in this study. The accuracy and efficiency of the three-dimensional seismic ground response analysis can be adapted to the requirements of engineering practice. 展开更多
