Graphene is such a kind of materials with the highest strength and the thinnest thickness. In this paper, the mechanical response of the bi-modulus beam subjected to the temperature effect and placed on the Winkler foundation is studied. The differential equations about the neutral axis position and undetermined parameters of the normal strain of the bi-modulus foundation beam are established. Then, the analytical expressions of the normal stress, bending moment, and displacement of the foundation beam are derived. Simultaneously, a calculation procedure based on the finite element method (FEM) is developed to obtain the temperature stress of the bi-modulus struc- tures. It is shown that the obtained bi-modulus solutions can recover the classical modulus solution, and the results obtained by the analytical expressions, the present FEM proce- dure, and the traditional FEM software are consistent, which verifies the accuracy and reliability of the present analytical model and procedure. Finally, the difference between the bi-modulus results and the classical same modulus results is discussed, and several reasonable suggestions for calculating and optimizing the certain bi-modulus member in practical engineering are presented. 展开更多

The quasi-Green's function method is used to solve the free vibration problem of clamped thin plates on the Winkler foundation. Quasi-Green's function is established by the fundamental solution and the boundary equation of the problem. The function satisfies the homogeneous boundary condition of tile problem. The mode-shape differential equation of the free vibration problem of clamped thin plates on the Winkler foundation is reduced to the Fredholm integral equation of the second kind by Green's formula. The irregularity of the kernel of the integral equation is overcome by choosing a suitable form of the normalized boundary equation. The numerical results show the high accuracy of the proposed method. 展开更多

In this paper, the bending problem of rectangular thin plates with free edges laid on tensionless Winkler foundation has been solved by employing Fourier series with supplementary terms. By assuming proper form of series for deflection, the basic differential equation with given boundary conditions can be transformed into a set of infinite algebraic equations. Because the boundary of contact region cannot bedetermined in advance, these equations are weak nonlinear ones. They can be solved by using iterative procedures. 展开更多

The idea of Green quasifunction method is clarified in detail by considering a free vibration problem of simply-supported trapezoidal shallow spherical shell on Winkler foundation.A Green quasifunction is established by using the fundamental solution and boundary equation of the problem. This function satisfies the homogeneous boundary condition of the problem. The mode shape differential equation of the free vibration problem of simply-supported trapezoidal shallow spherical shell on Winkler foundation is reduced to two simultaneous Fredholm integral equations of the second kind by Green formula. There are multiple choices for the normalized boundary equation.Based on a chosen normalized boundary equation, the irregularity of the kernel of integral equations is avoided. Finally, natural frequency is obtained by the condition that there exists a nontrivial solution in the numerically discrete algebraic equations derived from the integral equations.Numerical results show high accuracy of the Green quasifunction method. 展开更多

Serious uneven settlement of the tunnel may directly cause safety problems. At this stage, the deformation of the tunnel is predicted and analyzed mainly by numerical simulation, while the commonly used finite element method(FEM)uses low-order continuous elements. Therefore, the accuracy of tunnel settlement prediction is not enough. In this paper,a method is proposed to study the vertical deformation of the tunnel by using the combination of isogeometric analysis(IGA)and Bézier extraction operator.Compared with the traditional IGA method, this method can be easily integrated into the existing FEM framework, and ensure the same accuracy.A numerical example of an elastic foundation beam subjected to uniformly distributed load and an engineering example of an equivalent elastic foundation beamof the tunnel are given. The results show that the solution of the IGA method is closer to the theoretical solution of the initial-parameter method than the FEM,and the accuracy and reliability of the proposedmodel are verified. Moreover,it not only provides some theoretical support for the longitudinal design of the tunnel, but also provides a new way for the application and popularization of IGA in tunnel engineering. 展开更多

When the mining goaf is close to the cliff, rock slope subsidence induced by underground mining is significantly affected by its boundary conditions. In this study,an analytical method is proposed by considering the key strata as a semi-infinite Euler-Bernoulli beam rested on a Winkler foundation with a local subsidence area. The analytical solutions of deflection are derived by analyzing the boundary and continuity conditions of the cliff. Then, the analytical solutions are verified by the results from experimental tests,FEM and InSAR,respectively. After that, the influence of changing parameters on deflections is studied with sensitivity analysis. The results show that the distance between goaf and cliff significantly affects the deflection of semi-infinite beam. The response of semi-infinite beam is obviously determined by the length of goaf and the bending stiffness of beam. The comparisons between semi-infinite beam and infinite beam illustrate the ascendancy of the improved model in such problems. 展开更多

The excavation of foundation pit generates soil deformation around existing metro tunnel with shield driving method, which may lead to the deformation of tunnel lining. It is a challenge to evaluate the deformation of shield tunnel accurately and take measures to reduce the tunnel upward displacement as much as possible for geotechnical engineers.A new simplified analytical method is proposed to predict the longitudinal deformation of existing metro tunnel due to excavation unloading of adjacent foundation pit in this paper.Firstly, the additional stress of soils under vertical axisymmetric load in layered soil is obtained by using elastic multi-layer theory.Secondly, the metro tunnel is regarded as a Timoshenko beam supported by Winkler foundation so that the shear effect of tunnels can be taken into account. The additional stress acting on the tunnel due to excavation unloading in layered soil are compared with that in homogeneous soil.Additionally, the effectiveness of the analytical solution is verified via two actual cases. Moreover, parametric analysis is conducted to investigate the responses of the metro tunnel by considering such factors as the variation of subgrade coefficient, offset distance from the excavation center to tunnel longitudinal axis as well as equivalent shear stiffness. The proposed method can be used to provide theoretical basis for similar engineering project. 展开更多

This paper uses a mathematical method to develop an analytical solution to the local buckling behaviour of long rectangular plates resting on tensionless elastic Winkler foundations and under combined uniform longitudinal uniaxial compressive and uniform in-plane shear loads. Fitted formulas are derived for plates with clamped edges and simplified supported edges. Two examples are given to demonstrate the application of the current method: one is a plate on tensionless spring foundations and the other is the contact between the steel sheet and elastic solid foundation. Finite element (FE) analysis is also conducted to validate the analytical results. Good agreement is obtained between the current method and FE analysis. 展开更多

In this study, the effects of elastic foundations(EFs)and carbon nanotube(CNT)reinforcement on the hydrostatic buckling pressure(HBP)of truncated conical shells(TCSs)are investigated. The first order shear deformation theory(FOSDT)is generalized to the buckling problem of TCSs reinforced with CNTs resting on the EFs for the first time. The material properties of composite TCSs reinforced with CNTs are graded linearly according to the thickness coordinate. The Winkler elastic foundation(W-EF)and Pasternak elastic foundation(P-EF)are considered as the EF.The basic relations and equations of TCSs reinforced with CNTs on the EFs are obtained in the framework of the FOSDT and solved using the Galerkin method. One of the innovations in this study is to obtain a closed-form solution for the HBP of TCSs reinforced with CNTs on the EFs.Finally, the effects of the EFs and various types CNT reinforcements on the HBP are investigated simultaneously. The obtained results are compared with the results in the literature, and the accuracy of results is confirmed. 展开更多

To keep the tunnel face stable is very important for tunnel construction. In this paper, the tunnel face stability under the advanced pipe was analyzed using the Winkler foundation model and rigid limit equilibrium. The tunnel face deformation characteristics were also analyzed using the numerical simulation. The influence of parameters on the deflection of the pipe roof and the stability of the tunnel face were discussed. The results show that the tunnel face stability can be improved through increasing the pipe diameter, decreasing the initial displacement at the beginning of the pipe seat, and adopting the short round length and small excavation height. With the increase of tunnel burial depth, the safety factor of tunnel face stability first decreases, then increases, and then remains unchanged. The deformation at the center of the tunnel face is larger than the deformation at the surround sides and at the corner. The horizontal displacement varies little with the increasing of the pipe length. The horizontal displacement at the center of the tunnel face increases with the increase of the pipe ring spacing and the pipe longitudinal spacing. There is an optimum external angle. 展开更多

As jack-up platforms have recently been used in deeper and harsher waters, there has been an increasing demand to understand their behaviour more accurately to develop more sophisticated analysis techniques. One of the areas of significant development has been the modelling of spudean performance, where the load-displacement behaviour of the foundation is required to be included in any numerical model of the structure. In this study, beam on nonlinear winkler foundation (BNWF) modeling--which is based on using nonlinear springs and dampers instead of a continuum soil media--is employed for this purpose. A regular monochrome design wave and an irregular wave representing a design sea state are applied to the platform as lateral loading. By using the BNWF model and assuming a granular soil under spudcans, properties such as soil nonlinear behaviour near the structure, contact phenomena at the interface of soil and spudcan (such as uplifting and rocking), and geometrical nonlinear behaviour of the structure are studied. Results of this study show that inelastic behaviour of the soil causes an increase in the lateral displacement at the hull elevation and permanent unequal settlement in soil below the spudcans, which are increased by decreasing the friction angle of the sandy soil. In fact, spudeans and the underlying soil cause a relative fixity at the platform support, which changes the dynamic response of the structure compared with the case where the structure is assumed to have a fixed support or pinned support. For simulating this behaviour without explicit modelling of soil-structure interaction (SSI), moment- rotation curves at the end of platform legs, which are dependent on foundation dimensions and soil characteristics, are obtained. These curves can be used in a simplified model of the platform for considering the relative fixity at the soil- foundation interface. 展开更多

Based upon characteristic movement features of the overlying strata in solid backfill mining and in-situ observations,an associated model representing a roadway support system has been developed.Based on the Winkler foundation and beam model, the current study presents a static analysis of the model, thus permitting acquisition of a theoretical formula pertaining to roof convergence.Through use of working face 6304-1(Jisan Colliery) as the research setting, the association between roof convergence magnitude and both packwall strength and width have been elucidated.Based upon observed conditions at the working face, realistic packwall parameters have been formulated, with numerical simulation results and field application results indicating that design parameters garnered from the developed formula successfully adapted to local geological movement and deformation.Accordingly, roadway deformation was shown to be within the permissible range, thus satisfying mine production requirements. The proposed method in the current study may give a design basis for pack design in the context of SBM under similar conditions. 展开更多

A stationary clearance link algorithm(SCLA)for calculating the reaction-force of revolute clearance joints in crank slider mechanisms is proposed in this paper. The SCLA is more efficient than other algorithms of the same accuracy.Furthermore, based on the Winkler foundation model,an unsymmetrical Winkler foundation model and a double elastic layer Winkler model are proposed.By integrating a dynamic model and the unsymmetrical Winkler foundation model with Archard wear model,an improved integrated wear prediction model is also generated.A series of experiments have been performed to compare with the predicted analysis data, and the results showed a good agreement. As a real industry application, with the double elastic layer Winkler model, the integrated wear prediction model was successfully used to predict the wear depth of the joint bearing(bimetallic bearing)for the cantilever crane of a concrete pump truck of Sany Heavy Industry. 展开更多
