BACKGROUND The mental status of gynecologic patients has an important influence on their quality of life(QOL).Although high-quality QOL studies into breast cancer patients have been performed internationally,few QOL s...BACKGROUND The mental status of gynecologic patients has an important influence on their quality of life(QOL).Although high-quality QOL studies into breast cancer patients have been performed internationally,few QOL studies have examined patients with gynecological cancer.AIM To investigate the brief cancer-related worry inventory(BCWI)could evaluate the mental status of gynecological patients.METHODS Between July 2018 and December 2018,19 consecutive gynecological cancer patients were prospectively recruited for this study.The BCWI is a 15-item selfreported questionnaire that assesses cancer-related worries on a numeric scale(0–100).RESULTS The high BCWI group was significantly younger than the low BCWI group.Regarding social status,the absence of a spouse and children was significantly more common in the high BCWI group than in the low BCWI group.The operation time was longer in the worsening BCWI group than in the stable BCWI group(305.3±140.5 min vs 171.1±97.2 min;P=0.026).CONCLUSION Being young,having no family,and a long operation time were found to be risk factors for increased anxiety.Therefore,gynecological cancer patients should be assessed using the BCWI,and specific perioperative mental care should be considered for highly anxious patients.展开更多

The authors study people’s worries about becoming victimized by events and conditions often blamed on“those up there”.Excessive worries are bad for people’s performance because they lead to risk avoidance and lowe...The authors study people’s worries about becoming victimized by events and conditions often blamed on“those up there”.Excessive worries are bad for people’s performance because they lead to risk avoidance and lower self-confidence.In two representative surveys conducted in Germany,it is found that victimization concerns are positively correlated with people’s gender,previous victimization,their estimated likelihood of being victimized,their fear of crime,their crime-avoidance behavior,their striving for tradition and security,and their negative attitudes toward crimes.Negative correlations are found for people’s education,their striving for universalism,and their social capital.When considering all predictors combined,people’s expected likelihood to become victimized is found to be the optimal predictor of victimization concerns.It is recommended that management concentrates on setting realistic levels of such risk estimates to avoid negative effects on people’s performance.展开更多

There is normally a toxicological evaluation—in addition to other considerations—behind sales and use permissions and the levels that are accepted in food, air, water, etc. How does legislation affect toxicology? If there is no legislation, then clinical and forensic toxicology will be the most used toxicological disciplines (accidents and other cases of poisoning). The more sophisticated and restrictive the legislation becomes, the more toxicology is used not only to permit the use of chemicals but also to ban them. In addition, legislation for the protection of experimental animals has a profound influence in toxicology and accelerates the use of in vitro and other alternative methods. It was reported that the aminoglycoside antibiotics strongly inhibited the tear lysozyme activity. The lysozyme activity of tears which were added to different con- centrations of two aminoglycoside antibiotics and three other antibiotics was determined longitudinally. No influence of any antibiotics on tear lysozyme activity was found. Examples of this worrying trend show that it impacts on our society regarding health of the worki...Occupational Health (OH) is an important chapter of Public Health but its visibility is poor and continues to decrease. Examples of this worrying trend show that it impacts on our society regarding health of the working population and the retired individuals and on the economy through huge expenses for health, absenteeism, psychosocial problems, loss of performance and quality of work, etc. To cope with this challenge and to give its right place to OH, a global approach and a vision of this multidisciplinary field is needed as well as the development of emerging issues that stress, besides the prevention of occupational diseases, the promotion of “good health” through sciences like salutogenesis, positive psychology and the new findings of neuroscience. Moreover, all the partners involved in OH have to take their responsibility of this matter. The OH professionals have to enlarge the scope of their expertise;the academic institutions and research and education centers have to give more support to OH and the social partners and the decision-makers (politicians) have to put OH in their priorities. This paper is not a review of the new dimensions of OH but an overview of the emerging issues that have to be developed, based on the author’s experience of more than 40 years.展开更多
