On the 18th of February, the Kenya Medical Research Institute(KEMRI) raised an alarm that it had detected Anopheles(An.) stephensi in Laisamis and Saku sub counties of Marsabit county during a routine mosquito surveillance[1,2]. Up until this announcement, the invasive mosquito had been reported in other horn of African countries: Djibouti(2012), Ethiopia(2016).

Assessing quality of life using the brief cancer-related worry inventory for gynecological surgery

BACKGROUND The mental status of gynecologic patients has an important influence on their quality of life(QOL).Although high-quality QOL studies into breast cancer patients have been performed internationally,few QOL studies have examined patients with gynecological cancer.AIM To investigate the brief cancer-related worry inventory(BCWI)could evaluate the mental status of gynecological patients.METHODS Between July 2018 and December 2018,19 consecutive gynecological cancer patients were prospectively recruited for this study.The BCWI is a 15-item selfreported questionnaire that assesses cancer-related worries on a numeric scale(0–100).RESULTS The high BCWI group was significantly younger than the low BCWI group.Regarding social status,the absence of a spouse and children was significantly more common in the high BCWI group than in the low BCWI group.The operation time was longer in the worsening BCWI group than in the stable BCWI group(305.3±140.5 min vs 171.1±97.2 min;P=0.026).CONCLUSION Being young,having no family,and a long operation time were found to be risk factors for increased anxiety.Therefore,gynecological cancer patients should be assessed using the BCWI,and specific perioperative mental care should be considered for highly anxious patients.

Consciousness of Sorrow and Worry and the National Pedagogy of Reform

River Elegy(Heshang)is a Chinese TV documentary aired on Chinese Central Television(CCTV)in 1988.Its provocative condemnation of the thousand-year-old'yellow civilization'(huangse wenming黄色文明)of China stirred up a tornado of controversies among Chinese audiences.Intense debates and reflections on the documentary both inside and outside China have made Heshang one of the most intriguing'phenomena'in contemporary Chinese culture.This paper proposes a new perspective to read Heshang,tackling it as a historically situated narrative that embodies a post-Mao intellectual discourse of the national sentiment.In the new context of post-Mao China,what does Heshang tell of the relative positionalities of the intellectuals,the masses,and the state in the frame of Chinese modernity?How do we dialectically understand the documentary’s national pedagogy of reform in relation to the elusive agency of the low-quality Chinese masses?With these questions in mind,I revisit Heshang’s claim of weak political agency as an embodiment of low people quality.I argue that the national sentiment of the consciousness of sorrow and worry(忧患意识)simultaneously suggests and subverts the national pedagogy of reform promoted by the Heshang intellectuals.

Do Not Worry; Believe

Faith and well-being are the main concern of this paper. The connection between the two is discussed in three lessons that Soren Kierkegaard provides in his religious discourses What We Learn from the Lilies in the Field and from the Birds of the Air. The importance of the connection between faith and well-being, especially within Kierkegaard＇s authorship, derives from his definition of a human being as a synthesis of the infinite and the finite, of the temporal and the eternal, of freedom and necessity. It is important to note that this synthesis is not yet a self, not yet an authentic human being. In order to become a self a deviation is needed, a split within this elementarysynthesis. Only upon achieving such split a new synthesis is reconstructed, the synthesis that amounts to an authentic selfhood. The believer who has stopped worrying over his/her mundane concerns, by shifting its existential gravity towards God, will then have to reconstruct a new synthesis. This new synthesis will resemble the fundamental one in almost every aspect. But the difference would lie in choosing God, in the believer＇s hidden inwardness. Faith＇s fruits of eternal happiness are attained strictly through the journey undertaken by the believer＇s inner self.

Penn State Worry Questionnaire:structure and psychometric properties of the Chinese version

The Penn State Worry Questionnaire(PSWQ) is a measure of worry phenomena and has been demonstrated valid in cross-cultural populations. The present study examined the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Chinese version of PSWQ(Ch-PSWQ) in a Chinese college sample(n=1243). Exploratory factor analysis of the Ch-PSWQ revealed a two-factor solution(engagement of worry and absence of worry). Confirmatory factor analysis and model comparison supported that the model of one factor with method effect provided the best fit to the data. The Ch-PSWQ and its factors evidenced good internal consistency and both convergent and discriminate validity. The present study supports the opinion that the second factor of PSWQ not only contains the component of evaluating pathological worry,but also might represent other traits.

On People’s Worries about Becoming a Victim of Events or Conditions Often Blamed on Those up There

The influence of toxicology on legislation is quite clear in countries where chemicals are regulated by the authorities. THE LONGITUDINAL OBSERVATION OF THE EFFECT OF ANTIBIOTICS ON HUMAN TEAR LYSOZYME ACTIVITY

It is well known that lysozyme, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of bacterial cell walls, is one of the important substances protecting the eye surface from bacterial infections. It was reported that the aminoglycoside antibiotics strongly inhibited the tear lysozyme activity. The lysozyme activity of tears which were added to different con- centrations of two aminoglycoside antibiotics and three other antibiotics was determined longitudinally. No influence of any antibiotics on tear lysozyme activity was found. Therefore it is unnecessary to worry about that the use of aminoglycosida antibic tics may weaken the defence function of the eye.
