In the fiscal year of 1996, there were 324 young scholars applying for its assistance across the land. After a series of strict procedures of appraisal, such as commentaries on the applicants by their colleagues, disciplinary examinations and debates and discussions with specialists, all being hosted or supervised by the academic divisions under the National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC), a total of 97 valid candidates were selected.
