Plain concrete is strong in compression but brittle in tension, having a low tensile strain capacity that can significantly degrade the long-term performance of concrete structures, even when steel reinforcing is present. In order to address these challenges, short polymer fibers are randomly dispersed in a cement-based matrix to forma highly ductile engineered cementitious composite(ECC).Thismaterial exhibits high ductility under tensile forces, with its tensile strain being several hundred times greater than conventional concrete.Since concrete is inherently weak in tension, the tensile strain capacity(TSC)has become one of the most extensively researched properties. As a result, developing a model to predict the TSC of the ECC and to optimize the mixture proportions becomes challenging.Meanwhile, the effort required for laboratory trial batches to determine the TSC is reduced. To achieve the research objectives, five distinct models, artificial neural network(ANN),nonlinear model(NLR),linear relationship model(LR),multi-logistic model(MLR),and M5P-tree model(M5P),are investigated and employed to predict the TSCof ECCmixtures containing fly ash.Data from115 mixtures are gathered and analyzed to develop a new model. The input variables include mixture proportions, fiber length and diameter, and the time required for curing the various mixtures. The model’s effectiveness is evaluated and verified based on statistical parameters such as R2,mean absolute error(MAE),scatter index(SI),root mean squared error(RMSE),and objective function(OBJ)value.Consequently, the ANN model outperforms the others in predicting the TSC of the ECC,with RMSE,MAE,OBJ,SI,and R2 values of 0.42%,0.3%,0.33%,0.135%,and 0.98,respectively. 展开更多

The destruction of recombinant bamboo depends on many factors, and the complex ambient temperature is an important factor affecting its basic mechanical properties. To investigate the failure mechanism and stress–strain relationship of recombinant bamboo at different temperatures, eighteen tensile specimens of recombinant bamboo were tested. The results showed that with increasing ambient temperature, the typical failure modes of recombinant bamboo were flush fracture, toothed failure, and serrated failure. The ultimate tensile strength, ultimate strain and elastic modulus of recombinant bamboo decreased with increasing temperature, and the ultimate tensile stress decreased from 154.07 to 96.55 MPa,a decrease of 37.33%,and the ultimate strain decreased from 0.011 to 0.008,a decrease of 26.57%.Based on the Ramberg-Osgood model and the pseudo‒elastic design method,a predictive model was established for the tensile stress–strain relationship of recombinant bamboo considering the temperature level. The model can accurately evaluate the tensile stress–strain relationship of recombinant bamboo under different temperature conditions. 展开更多

DNA nanotubes(DNTs)with user-defined shapes and functionalities have potential applications in many fields. So far, compared with numerous experimental studies, there have been only a handful of models on the mechanical properties of such DNTs.This paper aims at presenting a multiscale model to quantify the correlations among the pre-tension states, tensile properties, encapsulation structures of DNTs,and the surrounding factors.First,by combining a statistical worm-like-chain(WLC)model of single DNA deformation and Parsegian's mesoscopic model of DNA liquid crystal free energy,a multiscale tensegrity model is established, and the pre-tension state of DNTs is characterized theoretically for the first time. Then,by using the minimum potential energy principle, the force-extension curve and tensile rigidity of pre-tension DNTs are predicted. Finally, the effects of the encapsulation structure and surrounding factors on the tensile properties of DNTs are studied. The predictions for the tensile behaviors of DNTs can not only reproduce the existing experimental results, but also reveal that the competition of DNA intrachain and interchain interactions in the encapsulation structures determines the pre-tension states of DNTs and their tensile properties. The changes in the pre-tension states and environmental factors make the monotonic or non-monotonic changes in the tensile properties of DNTs under longitudinal loads. 展开更多

This paper presents a new 3D mesoscopic model of ultra-high performance cement-based composite(UHPCC)to investigate its dynamic tensile behavior. In this model, the UHPCC is regarded as a two-phase material composed of cementitious matrix and randomly distributed fibers. The model is established using the commercial software LS-DYNA and involves generating the randomly distributed fiber elements with considerations of diameter, length, orientation and volume fraction, and then fully constraining them with the matrix. In particular,to capture the slipping effect between fibers and matrix that has a strong influence on the dynamic tensile behavior, the fibers are modelled by a fictitious material represented by the load-slip relation. The strain-rate effect of slipping force neglected in most of previous studies is considered by calibrating constitutive parameters of the fictitious material under different strain-rates based on the single fiber pullout tests. Finally, the 3D mesoscopic model is validated against three sets of tension-dominated experiments covered a wide range of loading intensity.Numerical predictions demonstrate that strain-rate effect of slipping force must be considered, and the neglect of it may lead to a great underestimation of the dynamic tensile strength of UHPCC material and would unavoidably underestimate the blast resistance of UHPCC components. 展开更多

The mechanical characteristics of crystalline rocks are affected by the heterogeneity of the spatial distribution of minerals. In this paper,a novel three-dimensional(3D)grain-based model(GBM)based on particle flow code(PFC),i.e.PFC3D-GBM,is proposed. This model can accomplish the grouping of mineral grains at the 3D scale and then filling them. Then, the effect of the position distribution, geometric size, and volume composite of mineral grains on the cracking behaviour and macroscopic properties of granite are examined by conducting Brazilian splitting tests. The numerical results show that when an external load is applied to a sample, force chains will form around each contact, and the orientation distribution of the force chains is uniform, which is independent of the external load level.Furthermore, the number of high-strength force chains is proportional to the external load level, and the main orientation distribution is consistent with the external loading direction. The main orientation of the cracks is vertical to that of the high-strength force chains. The geometric size of the mineral grains controls the mechanical behaviours. As the average grain size increases, the number of transgranular contacts with higher bonding strength in the region connecting both loading points increases. The number of high-strength force chains increases, leading to an increase in the stress concentration value required for the macroscopic failure of the sample.Due to the highest bonding strength, the generation of transgranular cracks in quartz requires a higher concentrated stress value. With increasing volume composition of quartz, the number of transgranular cracks in quartz distributed in the region connecting both loading points increases, which requires many high-strength force chains. The load level rises, leading to an increase in the tensile strength of the numerical sample. 展开更多

The dynamic tensile behaviors of a newly developed Ti-6Al-2Sn-2Zr-3Mo-1 Cr-2Nb-Si alloy (referred as TC21 in China) over a wide range of strain rates from quasi-static to dynamic regimes (0.001-1 200 s_l) at different temperatures were experimentally investigated. A split Hopkinson tension bar apparatus and a static material testing system were utilized to study the stress-strain responses under uniaxial tension loading condition. The experimental results indicate that the tensile behavior of TC21 titanium alloy is dependent on the strain rate and temperature. The values of initial yield stress increase with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature. The effects of strain rate and temperature on the initial yield behavior are estimated by introducing two sensitivity parameters. The phenomenological-based constitutive model, Johnson-Cook model, is suitably modified to describe the rate-temperature dependent constitutive behavior of TC21 titanium alloy. It is observed that the modified model is in good agreement with the experimental data subjected to the investigated range of strain rates and temperatures. 展开更多

In nature, there are widely distributed bi-modulus materials with different deformation characteristics under compressive and tensile stress states, such as concrete, rock and ceramics.Due to the lack of constitutive model that could reasonably consider the bi-modulus property of materials, and the lack of simple and reliable measurement methods for the tensile elastic parameters of materials, scientists and engineers always neglect the effect of the bi-modulus property of materials in engineering design and numerical simulation. To solve this problem, this study utilizes the uncoupled strain-driven constitutive model proposed by Latorre and Montáns(2020)to systematically study the distributions and magnitudes of stresses and strains of bi-modulus materials in the three-point bending test through the numerical method.Furthermore,a new method to synchronously measure the tensile and compressive elastic moduli of materials through the four-point bending test is proposed. The numerical results show that the bi-modulus property of materials has a significant effect on the stress, strain and displacement in the specimen utilized in the three-point and four-point bending tests.Meanwhile, the results from the numerical tests,in which the elastic constitutive model proposed by Latorre and Montáns(2020)is utilized, also indicate that the newly proposed measurement method has a good reliability.Although the new measurement method proposed in this study can synchronously and effectively measure the tensile and compressive elastic moduli,it cannot measure the tensile and compressive Poisson’s ratios. 展开更多

The modeling effects of constituents and dispersoids on the tensile ductility of aluminum alloy were studied. The results show that the tensile ductility decreases with the increase of the volume fraction and size of constituents. Thus, purification can improve the tensile ductility by decreasing the volume fraction of constituents(normally compositions of Fe and Si)and the first-class microcracks. The model also indicates that the tensile ductility decreases with the increase in the volume fraction of dispersoids.Decreasing the volume fraction of dispersoids along the grain boundaries by proper heat-treatment and improving the cohesion strength between dispersoids and matrix can also improve the tensile ductility by decreasing the volume fraction of the second-class microcracks. 展开更多

Sand production is a challenging issue in upstream oil and gas industry, causing operational and safety problems. Therefore, before drilling the wells,it is essential to predict and evaluate sanding onset of the wells. In this paper, new poroelastoplastic stress solutions around the perforation tunnel and tip based on the Mohr-Coulomb criterion are presented firstly.Based on the stress models,a tensile failure induced sanding onset prediction model for cased-perforated gas wells is derived. Then the analytical model is applied to field data to verify its applicability. The results from the perforation tip tensile failure induced sanding model are very close to field data. Therefore, this model is recommended for forecasting the critical conditions of sand production analysis.Such predictions are necessary for providing technical support for sand control decision-making and predicting the production condition at which sanding onset occurs. 展开更多

The tensile stress-strain curves of NiTi wires are obtained by tensile experiments under different heat treatments. A phenomenological physical model based on hysteresis element method is developed to describe the experimentally determined stress-strain curves of shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. Numerical simulations are made. Simulation results show that:(1) a series of unusual changes on physical and mechanical properties of SMA wires occur when martensitic, especially R (rhombohedral) phase transformation emerge. The stress-strain relation of SMA wires is highly non-linear; (2) there are no notable yielding phenomena before NiTi wires are broken; (3) numerical results obtained by the physical model are in good agreement with experimental data. 展开更多

The load transfer characteristics of a tensile anchor in the rock mass with weak interlayers were investigated, considering the nonuniform stress of the horizontally layered rock mass along anchors. An improved shear-slipping model was proposed to describe the stress evolution characteristics of the bolt-rock interface.Based on the improved model, analytical solutions of the axial force, shear stress distribution and load-displacement relationship considering the residual stress stage were established. The effects of the stratigraphic sequence, pulling force and bolt diameter on the stress distribution of the anchorage interface were evaluated by using analytical solutions. The results were verified by applying the finite difference numerical simulation method. The sensitivity of each parameter to the axial force and shear stress of the rock bolt was determined based on calculation of the sensitivity coefficient. The study results show that the axial force and shear stress tend to decrease nonuniformly along the rock bolt towards the anchorage depth.Due to the existence of weak interlayers, the shear stress mutates at the weak and hard rock interface, and the axial force appears to“rebound”at the bottom of the anchored section.Lithology has more significant effects on the axial force and shear stress at the bottom of the anchor than at the top of the anchor. The pulling force is more sensitive to the anchor stress than stratigraphic sequence when the bolt diameter is determined. This study provides a theoretical framework for the fundamental problem of tensile bolts in horizontally or vertically laminated rock masses, providing a theoretical basis for anchor design. 展开更多

A combined method of discrete event and agent based modelling has been applied to the computer modelling and simulation of the tensile strength of one-dimensional fibrous materials (ODFM). This combined method is based on the concept of discrete event simulation as being applied to the modeling of the structure of the fiber flow and on the concept of agent based modelling for modelling and simulation of the fiber interaction within the structure of the fibrous material. Frictional and traction forces arise as the result of this fiber interaction. A model of the ODFM tensile strength, which is based on the slippage effect, is created and studied in this research. Only frictional and traction forces determine the tensile strength in this kind of the model. The article examines the validation problem of the slippage effect based tensile strength model and questions regarding the strength potential estimation through variation in the parameters of the model. 展开更多

Tensile strength of concrete were examined on its partial replacement of cement and sand using ground granulated blast furnace and quarry dust. The study examines its behaviour at different dimensions. This is to monitor the variation effect of these parameters on the growth rates of tensile to the optimum curing age. These include non linear conditions of tensile state,non-elastic and its brittle behaviour at all times as it express zero conditions in tension. This means that it has the ability to with stand pull force. It also reflects its weak ability to handle shear stress thus tends to cause deformation in material as it has poor elasticity. The reflection of its brittle influence the rate of tensile behaviour from concrete ductility. These are known to be a material on modern mechanics of concrete. These are also considered as quasi brittle material. This behaviour was reflected as the system considered evaluating the growth rate of tensile strength that replaced cement and sand with these locally sourced addictives. The developed model monitor other reflected influential parameters such as variation of concrete porosity due it compaction in placements, tensile behaviour reflects these effect that subject it to mechanical properties of concrete. The study expressed the reaction of these parameters in the simulation, the evaluation of these affected the details variation of tensile growth rate at different water cement ratios and curing age.The tensile behaviour that was monitored are based on these factors in the study. The derived model were validated with the a researcher results[24],and both parameters developed best fits correlation. The study is imperative because the system expressed the behaviour of tensile strength from concrete at different dimensions.Experts can applied these concept to monitor tensile behaviour considering these parameters in its growth rates. 展开更多

The consideration of time dependence is essential for the study of deformation and fracturing processes of rock materials, especially for those subjected to strong compressive and tensile stresses. In this paper, the self-developed direct tension device and creep testing machine RLW-2000M are used to conduct the creep tests on red sandstone under uniaxial compressive and tensile stresses. The short-term and long-term creep behaviors of rocks under compressive and tensile stresses are investigated, as well as the long-term strength of rocks. It is shown that, under low-stress levels, the creep curve of sandstone consists of decay and steady creep stages; while under high-stress levels, it presents the accelerated creep stage and creep fracture presents characteristics of brittle materials. The relationship between tensile stress and time under uniaxial tension is also put forward. Finally, a nonlinear viscoelastoplastic creep model is used to describe the creep behaviors of rocks under uniaxial compressive and tensile stresses. 展开更多

Based on the elongated Kelvin obtained to investigate the tensile behavior Kelvin model's periodicity and symmetry in model, a simplified periodic structural cell is of anisotropic open-cell elastic foams due to the whole space. The half-strut element and elastic deflection theory are used to analyze the tensile response as done in the previous studies. This study produces theoretical expressions for the tensile stress-strain curve in the rise and transverse directions. In addition, the theoretical results are examined with finite element simulation using an existing formula. The results indicate that the theoretical analysis agrees with the finite element simulation when the strain is not too high, and the present model is better. At the same time, the anisotropy ratio has a significant effect on the mechanical properties of foams. As the anisotropy ratio increases, the tensile stress is improved in the rising direction but drops in the transverse direction under the same strain. 展开更多

The use of coral aggregate concrete(CAC)as a novel construction material has attracted significant attention for the construction of reef engineering structures. To investigate the static splitting-tensile behaviors of CAC under the influence of two factors, namely specimen geometry and bearing strip size,a three-dimensional(3D)mesoscale modeling approach with consideration for aggregate randomness in shape and distribution was adopted in this study. We established 12 different specimen models with two specimen shapes(i.e.,a cube with an edge length of 150 mm and a cylinder with dimensions ofφ150 mm×300 mm)and six strip widths(i.e.,6,9,12,15,18,and 20 mm)for calculation. The effects of specimen geometry and strip width on the splitting-tensile properties of CAC,such as failure processes, final failure patterns, and splitting-tensile strength(fst),are analyzed and discussed systematically. The results indicate the high reliability of the developed mesoscale modeling approach and reveal the optimal computational parameters for simulating and predicting the splitting-tensile properties of CAC.The fstvalues of CAC are associated with both the specimen geometry and width of the bearing strip. The fstvalues of the cube model are slightly higher than those of the cylinder model for the same bearing strip size, representing geometry effects that can be explained by differences in fracture area.Additionally, the fstvalue of CAC gradually increases with the relative width of the bearing strip ranging from 0.04 to 0.13.Based on the elastic solution theory, the variation area of CAC fstvalues with the relative width of the bearing strip was determined preliminarily, which has great significance for studying the tensile performance of CAC. 展开更多
