This study presents a new tool for solving stochastic boundary-value problems. This tool is created by modify the previous spectral stochastic meshless local Petrov-Galerkin method using the MLPG5 scheme. This modified spectral stochastic meshless local Petrov-Galerkin method is selectively applied to predict the structural failure probability with the uncertainty in the spatial variability of mechanical properties. Except for the MLPG5 scheme, deriving the proposed spectral stochastic meshless local Petrov-Galerkin formulation adopts generalized polynomial chaos expansions of random mechanical properties. Predicting the structural failure probability is based on the first-order reliability method. Further comparing the spectral stochastic finite element-based and meshless local Petrov-Galerkin-based predicted structural failure probabilities indicates that the proposed spectral stochastic meshless local Petrov-Galerkin method predicts the more accurate structural failure probability than the spectral stochastic finite element method does. In addition, generating spectral stochastic meshless local Petrov-Galerkin results are considerably time-saving than generating Monte-Carlo simulation results does. In conclusion, the spectral stochastic meshless local Petrov-Galerkin method serves as a time-saving tool for solving stochastic boundary-value problems sufficiently accurately. 展开更多

The Galerkin and least-squares methods are two classes of the most popular Krylov subspace methOds for solving large linear systems of equations. Unfortunately, both the methods may suffer from serious breakdowns of the same type: In a breakdown situation the Galerkin method is unable to calculate an approximate solution, while the least-squares method, although does not really break down, is unsucessful in reducing the norm of its residual. In this paper we first establish a unified theorem which gives a relationship between breakdowns in the two methods. We further illustrate theoretically and experimentally that if the coefficient matrix of a lienar system is of high defectiveness with the associated eigenvalues less than 1, then the restarted Galerkin and least-squares methods will be in great risks of complete breakdowns. It appears that our findings may help to understand phenomena observed practically and to derive treatments for breakdowns of this type. 展开更多

Combining moving least square approximations and boundary integral equations, a meshless Galerkin method, which is the Galerkin boundary node method (GBNM), for twoand three-dimensional infinite elastic solid mechanics problems with traction boundary conditions is discussed. In this numerical method, the resulting formulation inherits the symmetry and positive definiteness of variational problems, and boundary conditions can be applied directly and easily. A rigorous error analysis and convergence study for both displacement and stress is presented in Sobolev spaces. The capability of this method is illustrated and assessed by some numerical examples. 展开更多

In the present work, the improved version of the meshless singular boundary method(ISBM) is developed for analyzing the performance of bottom standing submerged permeable breakwaters in regular normally incident waves and in the proximity of a vertical wall. Both single and dual prismatic breakwaters of rectangular and trapezoidal forms are examined. The physical problem is cast in terms of the Laplace equation governing an irrotational flow and incompressible fluid motion with appropriate mixed type boundary conditions, and solved numerically using the ISBM. To model the permeability of the breakwaters fully absorbing boundary conditions are assumed. Numerical results are presented in terms of hydrodynamic quantities of the reflection coefficients. These are firstly validated against the results of a multi-domain boundary element method(BEM) developed independently for a previous study. The agreement between the results of the two methods is excellent. The coefficients of reflection are then computed and discussed for a variety of structural conditions including the breakwaters height, width, spacing, and absorbing permeability. Effects of the proximity of the vertical plane wall are also investigated. The breakwater's width is found to have only marginal effects compared with its height. Permeability tends to decrease the minimum reflections. These coefficients show periodic variations with the spacing relative to the wavelength. Trapezoidal breakwaters are found to be more cost-effective than the rectangular breakwaters. Dual breakwater systems are confirmed to perform much better than single structures. 展开更多

In this paper, the meshless integral method based on the regularized boundary integral equation [1] has been extended to analyze the large deformation of elastoplastic materials. The updated Lagrangian governing integral equation is obtained from the weak form of elastoplasticity based on Green-Naghdi’s theory over a local sub-domain, and the moving least-squares approximation is used for meshless function approximation. Green-Naghdi’s theory starts with the additive decomposition of the Green-Lagrange strain into elastic and plastic parts and considers aJ2elastoplastic constitutive law that relates the Green-Lagrange strain to the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress. A simple, generalized collocation method is proposed to enforce essential boundary conditions straightforwardly and accurately, while natural boundary conditions are incorporated in the system governing equations and require no special handling. The solution algorithm for large deformation analysis is discussed in detail. Numerical examples show that meshless integral method with large deformation is accurate and robust. 展开更多

The goal of this study is to solve the neutron diffusion equation by using a meshless method and evaluate its performance compared to traditional methods. This paper proposes a novel method based on coupling the meshless local Petrov–Galerkin approach and the moving least squares approximation. This computational procedure consists of two main steps. The first involved applying the moving least squares approximation to construct the shape function based on the problem domain. Then, the obtained shape function was used in the meshless local Petrov–Galerkin method to solve the neutron diffusion equation.Because the meshless method is based on eliminating the mesh-based topologies, the problem domain was represented by a set of arbitrarily distributed nodes. There is no need to use meshes or elements for field variable interpolation. The process of node generation is simply and fully automated, which can save time. As this method is a local weak form, it does not require any background integration cells and all integrations are performed locally over small quadrature domains. To evaluate the proposed method, several problems were considered. The results were compared with those obtained from the analytical solution and a Galerkin finite element method. In addition, the proposed method was used to solve neutronic calculations in thesmall modular reactor. The results were compared with those of the citation code and reference values. The accuracy and precision of the proposed method were acceptable. Additionally, adding the number of nodes and selecting an appropriate weight function improved the performance of the meshless local Petrov–Galerkin method. Therefore, the proposed method represents an accurate and alternative method for calculating core neutronic parameters. 展开更多

The upwind scheme is very important in the numerical approximation of some problems such as the convection dominated problem, the two-phase flow problem, and so on. For the fractional flow formulation of the two-phase flow problem, the Penalty Discontinuous Galerkin (PDG) methods combined with the upwind scheme are usually used to solve the phase pressure equation. In this case, unless the upwind scheme is taken into consideration in the velocity reconstruction, the local mass balance cannot hold exactly. In this paper, we present a scheme of velocity reconstruction in some H(div) spaces with considering the upwind scheme totally. Furthermore, the different ways to calculate the nonlinear coefficients may have distinct and significant effects, which have been investigated by some authors. We propose a new algorithm to obtain a more effective and stable approximation of the coefficients under the consideration of the upwind scheme. 展开更多

A meshfree method namely, element free Gelerkin (EFG) method, is presented in this paper for the solution of governing equations of 2-D potential problems. The EFG method is a numerical method which uses nodal points in order to discretize the computational domain, but where the use of connectivity is absent. The unknowns in the problems are approximated by means of connectivity-free technique known as moving least squares (MLS) approximation. The effect of irregular distribution of nodal points on the accuracy of the EFG method is the main goal of this paper as a complement to the precedent researches investigated by proposing an irregularity index (II) in order to analyze some 2-D benchmark examples and the results of sensitivity analysis on the parameters of the method are presented. 展开更多

In this paper,we explore bound preserving and high-order accurate local discontinuous Galerkin(LDG)schemes to solve a class of chemotaxis models, including the classical Keller-Segel(KS)model and two other density-dependent problems. We use the convex splitting method, the variant energy quadratization method, and the scalar auxiliary variable method coupled with the LDG method to construct first-order temporal accurate schemes based on the gradient flow structure of the models. These semi-implicit schemes are decoupled, energy stable, and can be extended to high accuracy schemes using the semi-implicit spectral deferred correction method. Many bound preserving DG discretizations are only worked on explicit time integration methods and are difficult to get high-order accuracy. To overcome these difficulties,we use the Lagrange multipliers to enforce the implicit or semi-implicit LDG schemes to satisfy the bound constraints at each time step. This bound preserving limiter results in the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition, which can be solved by an efficient active set semi-smooth Newton method.Various numerical experiments illustrate the high-order accuracy and the effect of bound preserving. 展开更多

In this article,a meshless method using the spacetime collocation for solving the two-dimensional backward heat conduction problem(BHCP)is proposed. The spacetime collocation meshless method(SCMM)is to derive the general solutions as the basis functions for the two-dimensional transient heat equation using the separation of variables.Numerical solutions of the heat conduction problem are expressed as a series using the addition theorem.Because the basis functions are the general solutions of the governing equation, the boundary points may be collocated on the spacetime boundary of the domain. The proposed method is verified by conducting several heat conduction problems. We also carry out numerical applications to compare the SCMM with other meshless methods. The results show that the SCMM is accurate and efficient.Furthermore,it is found that the recovered boundary data on inaccessible boundary can be obtained with high accuracy even though the over specified data are provided only at a 1/6 portion of the spacetime boundary. 展开更多

In response to the complex characteristics of actual low-permeability tight reservoirs, this study develops a meshless-based numerical simulation method for oil-water two-phase flow in these reservoirs, considering complex boundary shapes.Utilizing radial basis function point interpolation, the method approximates shape functions for unknown functions within the nodal influence domain. The shape functions constructed by the aforementioned meshless interpolation method haveδ-function properties, which facilitate the handling of essential aspects like the controlled bottom-hole flow pressure in horizontal wells. Moreover, the meshless method offers greater flexibility and freedom compared to grid cell discretization, making it simpler to discretize complex geometries.A variational principle for the flow control equation group is introduced using a weighted least squares meshless method, and the pressure distribution is solved implicitly.Example results demonstrate that the computational outcomes of the meshless point cloud model, which has a relatively small degree of freedom, are in close agreement with those of the Discrete Fracture Model(DFM)employing refined grid partitioning, with pressure calculation accuracy exceeding 98.2%.Compared to high-resolution grid-based computational methods, the meshless method can achieve a better balance between computational efficiency and accuracy.Additionally, the impact of fracture half-length on the productivity of horizontal wells is discussed. The results indicate that increasing the fracture half-length is an effective strategy for enhancing production from the perspective of cumulative oil production. 展开更多

In this paper,we develop bound-preserving discontinuous Galerkin(DG)methods for chemical reactive flows. There are several difficulties in constructing suitable numerical schemes.First of all,the density and internal energy are positive, and the mass fraction of each species is between 0 and 1.Second,due to the rapid reaction rate, the system may contain stiff sources, and the strong-stability-preserving explicit Runge-Kutta method may result in limited time-step sizes. To obtain physically relevant numerical approximations,we apply the bound-preserving technique to the DG methods.Though traditional positivity-preserving techniques can successfully yield positive density, internal energy, and mass fractions, they may not enforce the upper bound 1 of the mass fractions. To solve this problem,we need to(i)make sure the numerical fluxes in the equations of the mass fractions are consistent with that in the equation of the density;(ii)choose conservative time integrations, such that the summation of the mass fractions is preserved. With the above two conditions, the positive mass fractions have summation 1,and then, they are all between 0 and 1.For time discretization,we apply the modified Runge-Kutta/multi-step Patankar methods, which are explicit for the flux while implicit for the source.Such methods can handle stiff sources with relatively large time steps, preserve the positivity of the target variables, and keep the summation of the mass fractions to be 1.Finally,it is not straightforward to combine the bound-preserving DG methods and the Patankar time integrations. The positivity-preserving technique for DG methods requires positive numerical approximations at the cell interfaces, while Patankar methods can keep the positivity of the pre-selected point values of the target variables. To match the degree of freedom,we use polynomials on rectangular meshes for problems in two space dimensions. To evolve in time,we first read the polynomials at the Gaussian points. Then, suitable slope limiters can be applied to enforce the positivity of the solutions at those points, which can be preserved by the Patankar methods, leading to positive updated numerical cell averages. In addition,we use another slope limiter to get positive solutions used for the bound-preserving technique for the flux.Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the good performance of the proposed schemes. 展开更多

This paper investigates superconvergence properties of the direct discontinuous Galerkin(DDG)method with interface corrections and the symmetric DDG method for diffusion equations. We apply the Fourier analysis technique to symbolically compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the amplification matrices for both DDG methods with different coefficient settings in the numerical fluxes.Based on the eigen-structure analysis,we carry out error estimates of the DDG solutions, which can be decomposed into three parts:(i)dissipation errors of the physically relevant eigenvalue, which grow linearly with the time and are of order 2k for P^(k)(k=2,3)approximations;(ii)projection error from a special projection of the exact solution, which is decreasing over the time and is related to the eigenvector corresponding to the physically relevant eigenvalue;(iii)dissipative errors of non-physically relevant eigenvalues, which decay exponentially with respect to the spatial mesh sizeΔx.We observe that the errors are sensitive to the choice of the numerical flux coefficient for even degree P^(2)approximations,but are not for odd degree P^(3)approximations.Numerical experiments are provided to verify the theoretical results. 展开更多

In this study,a wavelet multi-resolution interpolation Galerkin method(WMIGM)is proposed to solve linear singularly perturbed boundary value problems.Unlike conventional wavelet schemes, the proposed algorithm can be readily extended to special node generation techniques, such as the Shishkin node.Such a wavelet method allows a high degree of local refinement of the nodal distribution to efficiently capture localized steep gradients. All the shape functions possess the Kronecker delta property, making the imposition of boundary conditions as easy as that in the finite element method.Four numerical examples are studied to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the proposedwavelet method. The results showthat the use ofmodified Shishkin nodes can significantly reduce numerical oscillation near the boundary layer.Compared with many other methods, the proposed method possesses satisfactory accuracy and efficiency. The theoretical and numerical results demonstrate that the order of theε-uniform convergence of this wavelet method can reach 5. 展开更多

We extend the monolithic convex limiting(MCL)methodology to nodal discontinuous Galerkin spectral-element methods(DGSEMS).The use of Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto(LGL)quadrature endows collocated DGSEM space discretizations of nonlinear hyperbolic problems with properties that greatly simplify the design of invariant domain-preserving high-resolution schemes.Compared to many other continuous and discontinuous Galerkin method variants,a particular advantage of the LGL spectral operator is the availability of a natural decomposition into a compatible subcellflux discretization.Representing a highorder spatial semi-discretization in terms of intermediate states,we performflux limiting in a manner that keeps these states and the results of Runge-Kutta stages in convex invariant domains. In addition, local bounds may be imposed on scalar quantities of interest. In contrast to limiting approaches based on predictor-corrector algorithms, our MCL procedure for LGL-DGSEM yields nonlinearflux approximations that are independent of the time-step size and can be further modified to enforce entropy stability. To demonstrate the robustness of MCL/DGSEM schemes for the compressible Euler equations,we run simulations for challenging setups featuring strong shocks, steep density gradients, and vortex dominatedflows. 展开更多
