Discriminative Latent Model(DLM) is proposed for Multiword Expressions(MWEs) extraction in Chinese text to improve the performance of Machine Translation(MT) system such as Template Based MT(TBMT).For MT systems to become of further practical use, they need to be enhanced with MWEs processing capability. As our study towards this goal,we propose DLM,which is developed for sequence labeling task including hidden structures,to extract MWEs for MT systems.DLM combines the advantages of existing discriminative models, which can learn hidden structures in sequence labeling task.In our evaluations,DLM achieves precisions ranging up to 90.73% for some type of MWEs,which is higher than state-of-the-art discriminative models.Such results demonstrate that it is feasible to automatically identify many Chinese MWEs using our DLM tool. With MWEs processing model,BLEU score of MT system has also been increased by up to 0.3 in close test. 展开更多

Against the background of a rigorous campaign of globalization of Chinese culture, the global dissemination of local operas has drawn attention from the government, art performers, translators and scholars. This paper takes Wuxi Opera, a precious cultural treasure in Jiangsu province, China, for example. We will discuss the difficulties in spreading Wuxi Opera globally and learn the successful globalizing experience from other operas, such as Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera and Sichuan Opera. Considering the important status and rich resources of Peking Opera, we will analyze Peking Opera thoroughly and the most important aspects of Sichuan Opera and Kunqu Opera. By analyzing their translations and globalization process, we believe that Wuxi Opera should make efforts especially in four aspects to make progress in its globalizing campaign. 展开更多

In the 21st century, with gradually accelerating process of globalization, international exchanges are increasingly frequent. We should understand that within the range of the same cultural context, people have little difficulties in communicating with others; however, if we use the same way to treat the one who is under other cultural backgrounds, they tend to have misunderstanding or confliction, affecting the interaction and communication and causing undue loss. Business English translation is communication process and tools held between people speaking different languages to conduct commercial communication. Culture is a factor in translation that cannot be ignored, different nations have different historical backgrounds, manners, customs, cultural traditions, therefore, business English translation must understand the cultural differences between China and the West, and tried to make these differences disappear in the interpretation process and find the exact words in the target language, so exotic cultural can represented in the target language. 展开更多

Fansubbing, short for fan subtitling, is a new form of subtitling done by fans for fans voluntarily and collaboratively to distribute free fansubbed programs. Fansub is a virtual community where fansubbers communicate only through chatting rooms, forums, MSN or QQ. With the popularity of audiovisual programs on the Intemet, fansubs become well-known for their voluntary fansubbed programs and interesting fansubbing. However, little is known about the operating of this virtual community and the strategies of fansubbing humor. Thus, this dissertation explores the modus operandi of fansubs in China's Mainland, and discusses fansubbing strategies compared with that of mainstream subtitling, with particular emphasis on fansubbed humor in American TV series which are popular with Chinese audiences. Different from the mainstream subtitling which often domesticates the otherness in the foreign culture, fansubbing tends to rewrite and manipulate the translation in a more idiosyncratic and creative way. Fansubbers recreate the humor in an "abusive" way to explain the cultural difficulties. And their "abusive" manipulation of translation, especially in humor translation, which helps the audience to overcome the culture barriers, experience the cultural "otherness" while entertain the humor, has great potential to be adopted by other translators in dealing with translating cultural difficulties. 展开更多

Intercultures play an important role in localization of translation. They are the essential reference resources for those who are translators as well as writers in their literary translation or creation. Translators contribute to the extension of source culture and in target culture by means ofintercultures to form new localized cultural paradigms. Bing Xin' s creation of the short free verse in the vernacular Chinese was influenced by Hu shih's new literature ideas and Zheng Zhenduo's translation of Stray Birds, a famous poetry anthology of Tagore. Through her translation, she borrowed new literary paradigms from foreign languages and successfully converted them into more acceptable ones in Chinese new literature. The paper, from the perspectives of Localization and Intercultures by Anthony Pym, explores the effects which Hu Shih and Zheng Zhenduo made upon Bing Xin's poetry translation and creation in the trend of poetry localization in the May Fourth Movement, and analyzes the interactions between Bing Xin's poetry creation and her poetry translation. 展开更多

Zhao Yuanren's translation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland can be regarded as the best Chinese version even though dozens more have been published ever since. Its success can be largely attributed to Zhao's child-oriented concept which attaches much importance to children's tastes and interests. With the guidance of child-oriented principle, Zhao mainly adopted the strategies of addition and substitution to present a different Alice's wonderland to the intended Chinese child readership, especially in dealing with Carroll's word plays. 展开更多

Proverb, the essence of language, is a fixed phrase or short sentence that is circulated among the masses. With the increasingly close exchange between China and western countries, translation between English and Chinese, especially proverb translation, is the most important task of translators. "English animal proverb is a wonderful work of numerous and various English proverbs, and it is rich in unique charms of language arts." Correctly translating English animal proverb can play an important role in proverb translation A large number of English animal proverbs use "dog" as a metaphor, and there is an obvious discrepancy of dog culture between China and western countries. In the light of it, taking the proverb about "dog" as an example, this thesis introduces the dog culture of China and western countries respectively and their discrepancies. Based on this, the thesis has a deep discussion on several methods of translating English proverb into Chinese and the attentions that should be paid in the process of translating. All these aim to make readers have a better understanding of Chinese and western proverbs and shorten the distance caused by cultural difference to more flexibly master and use both English and Chinese languages 展开更多

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese-translated Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire-2 (C-BREQ-2) among Chinese university students from the Mainland and Hong Kong of China. Methods: University students from the Mainland (n = 191) and Hong Kong (n=194) of China participated in this study. Factorial validity, discriminant validity, nomological validity, internal reliability, and measurement invariance across sample of the C-BREQ-2 were examined. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis provided support for the factorial validity of the 18-item, 5-factor structure C-BREQ-2. Examination of the 95% confidence interval of the inter-factor correlations suggested that the C-BREQ-2 assesses related but distinct constructs, which provided support for its discriminant validity. The internal consistency reliability of the C-BREQ-2 was found acceptable. Examination of the pattern of inter-factor correlations between different regulations suggested that a simplex-like pattern was displayed, which provided evidence for the nomological validity of C-BREQ-2. The results from multi-group confirmatory factor analysis suggested that the factor loadings and variances/ covariances of the C-BREQ-2 measurement model were invariant across the Chinese university students in the Mainland and Hong Kong of China. Conclusion: The current study provided further psychometric evidence for the C-BREQ-2, which makes the further application and research of self-determination theory (SDT) based motivation in relation to exercise and physical activity in the Mainland of China context possible. 展开更多

Translation is not only a language activity, but also a thinking activity, which involves the conversion of the two languages, and the language is both a thinking tool and the result of thinking. Language and thought are closely related, and they are both interacting and interdependent. Different thinking determines that the expression of both English and Chinese on the same topic is also different. Through the relationship between language and thought, standing on a higher philosophical point of thinking, we can investigate the effect of the differences between English and Chinese translation. The translator can pay more attention to the difference' s impact of translation, which assure a higher accuracy of the translation. 展开更多

As a beak with the traditional "prescriptive" approach and an important complement to translation theories, translation norms thus open up a descriptive and target-oriented perspective for the translation practice and study. For the successful access of the translation text into the target culture, the translator has to make choices between two languages, texts and cultures, etc.. Thus the translation norms are revealed. This paper shows the operation of translation norms as seen from the English version of Chinese classics by KU Hung-ming and analyzes why KU Hung-ming's translation of Confucian classics such as Lun Yu and Zhong Yong enjoyed greater popularity among Western readers than the translation of Western missionaries. The paper also holds that the unfaithful translations regarded by a source text-oriented approach were actually where KU was most successful in implementing his translation strategies to achieve expressiveness. 展开更多

The wide application of Chinese and foreign allusions is a big feature of QIAN Zhong-shu's only novel and masterpiece Fortress Besieged, which was first published in 1947. The paper makes an attempt to categorize and analyze the strategies in translating allusions adopted by Jeanne Kelly and Nathan K. Mao in the only English version. The strategies include literal translation, literal translation plus endnote, literal translation plus explanation added in the text, interpretation of the implied meaning plus endnote, and interpretation of the implied meaning in the text. In particular, the strategy of literal translation plus endnote is mostly adopted. This is indicative of the translators' wish to be as faithful as possible to the source text. What's more, the literal translation strategy and use of endnotes is of a big help to communicate the Chinese culture to foreigners 展开更多

With the rapid development of Chinese economy, more and more foreigners have been attracted to China to invest, work, study, and travel. To help the foreigners better understand China and facilitate cross-cultural communication, bilingual or even trilingual public signs spring up in every part of China. As is known that public signs, usually in the form of a few words, pictures, or words accompanied with a picture, function not only as a"face" of a city and a nation, but also as a first calling card given to the foreigners. Moreover, public signs have definite functions--informing, warning, or directing. However, to our disappointment, mistranslations of the public signs are often presented in some places. As a special text whose function is strong and communicative purpose is quite clear, the translation of public signs should be based on the text's functions and the translator's purpose. This paper classifies public signs, compares Chinese signs with English ones, and comes up with the principle for its Chinese-English translation, namely, an A-B-C approach (Adapt-Borrow-Create approach) which is based on the Skopostheorie. 展开更多
