In order to identify the sociodemographic, clinical and behavioral factors associated with it, we conducted a study in specialized centers welcoming subjects with intellectual disabilities in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). Objectives: The objective of this study was to identify the factors associated with it among intellectually disabled in the specialized centers of Ouagadougou. Methods: The study was cross-sectional analytical. The survey took place between November 2020 and January 2021 among people with intellectual disabilities in reception centers receiving a grant from the Ministry of Women, National Solidarity, Family and Humanitarian Action. Data collection was done with a questionnaire adapted from the World Health Organization (WHO) and dental caries was recorded according to WHO criteria in decayed, missing or filled teeth generating a DMF index. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with the presence of dental caries. Results: A total of 193 participants were included in the study with an average age of 12.4 years ± 7.9. The overall prevalence of caries measured with the DMF index was 58.6% 95% CI [51.2 - 65.8]. It was significantly associated with female gender (OR = 4.2;95% CI [1.4 - 12.5], p = 0,01), the clinical form of mental illness (epilepsy OR = 3.8 95%;CI [1.2 - 12.7], p = 0,02, trisomy OR = 5.0;95% CI [1.1 - 22.9], p = 0,03, motor autonomy OR = 0.2 95%;CI [0.1 - 0.7], p = 0,01) and at use of toothpaste OR = 9.33;95% CI [1.05 - 82.7], p = 0,04. Conclusion: Dental caries remains a very present pathology in most people living with an intellectual disability. Also, it is necessary to put in place prevention strategies to reduce its prevalence and improve access to oral care for these people.展开更多

Two calibrated examiners orally examined all present grade 2 children in the classroom, using standard caries plaque and tooth morphology criteria. Dental caries was scored at enamel (D2) and dentine (D3) for tooth and surface level. Independent variables were age, gender and school. Data analysis used analysis of variance and t-test. The sample comprised 1 043 7- and 8-year-olds. The prevalence of dental caries in permanent dentition was 8.7% and in primary dentition, 68.7%. Mean Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth/S (DMFT/S) scores were 0.1 1 and . 14, respectively. Mean dmft/s scores were 2.8 and 5.0. The d-component constituted 75% of the d3mft index, while enamel carious lesions constituted 36% of the total number of carious lesions (d2,3-component). Prevalence of medium and deep pits and fissures was 84.6%. Prevalence of medium and severe plaque accumulation was 67.4%. Prevalence of dental caries in the deciduous and permanent dentitions of 7- to 8-year-old children was high. Deed oits and fissures in high caries risk children should be sealed_展开更多

A substantial body of evidence is beginning to accumulate that indicates the modulation of the alkalinogenic potential of dental biofilms may be a promising strategy for caries control. This brief review highlights recent progress toward understanding molecular genetic and physiologic aspects of important alkali-generating pathways in oral bacteria, and the role of alkali production in the ecology of dental biofilms in health and disease.展开更多

In this study, we assessed and analyzed the disease burden of childhood dental caries in China by extracting data from the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016). In 2016, the number of cases, prevalence, years lived with disability (YLD), and age-standardized YLD rate of dental caries was 93.0 million, 43.0%, 32,200 person years, and 14.8 per 100,000, respectively. Across 33 provincial units, the disease burden was highest in Hubei (YLD rate 28.6 per 100,000), lowest in Macao (9.1 per 100,000), while geographical clustering was not observed. Compared with 1990, the prevalence in 2016 decreased from 46.8% to 43.0%, and the YLD rate decreased from 16.5 per 100,000 to 14.8 per 100,000. Given the slight decrease in dental caries burden, the prevalence and disease burden remained high among Chinese children. Strategies for addressing the spatial inequity of childhood dental caries require geographical targeting.展开更多

Methods: An epidemiological method was used to investigate the daily total intake of fluoride, dental fluorosis, and dental caries among 236 and 290 children aged 8-13 years in a severe endemic area and in a non-fluorosis control area, respectively. The children were divided into eight subgroups according to each child' s estimated daily total intake of fluoride. The prevalence of dental fluorosis and dental caries in each group was calculated. Results: As expected, elevated levels of fluoride intake were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of dental fluorosis and an increasing amount of more severe defect dental fluorosis. When the daily total F intake was 2.78 mg/child/day, the prevalence of dental fluorosis was nearly 100%, with the prevalence of defect dental fluorosis increasing with increasing fluoride intake. There was also a significant negative(inverse) dose-response relationship between the daily total intake of fluoride and the overall prevalence of dental caries, the prevalence of which decreased when the daily total intake of fluoride increased up to 3.32 mg/child/day. However, at higher levels of daily total intake of fluoride the prevalence of dental caries increased, giving rise to a U-shaped dose-response relationship curve. Conclusion: It is important to monitor total fluoride exposure and protect children from excessive fluoride intake, especially during the years of tooth development.展开更多

Methods Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015 (GBD2015), which systematically assessed the epidemiological characteristics of major diseases and their transitions by country and region from 1990 to 2015, we extracted the estimated results for China. We then used the Bayesian meta-regression method to estimate the sex- and age-specific prevalences and YLDs from dental caries among children and adolescents under 15 years old in Sichuan province and compared them with global and national indicators for the same period. Results In 2015, there were almost 6 million cases of dental caries in children and adolescents (aged 〈 15 years) in Sichuan province, accounting for 6% of the total cases in China. For children under 5 years, the prevalence of deciduous caries was 55.9%, and the YLDs value was 10.8 per 100,000, while it was 24.3% and 5.1 per 100,000 respectively among 5- to 14-year-olds; for those aged 5 to 14 years, the prevalence of permanent caries was 21.5%, and the YLDs value was 11.5 per 100,000. From 1990 to 2015, the prevalence of dental caries for children under 5 years increased substantially, by 16.2%, and the YLDs increased by 8.7%. Among those aged 5 to 14 years, the prevalence increased and the YLDs decreased. Conclusion Dental caries remains a huge health burden in Western China. In contrast to the global and national data, the trend has increased rapidly over the past 25 years in this region. This work provides suggestions for the prevention and control for oral health in China with the policy of two-child.展开更多

Purposes of this study were to compare the elution levels of aluminum and calcium from deciduous enamel into acidic artificial saliva, and determine whether the degree of aluminum elution reflects individual caries risk. One hundred and eleven extracted human deciduous teeth were collected. Concentrations of aluminum and calcium eluted from sound regions of enamel into artificial saliva (pH 6.2 or 5.5) were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. One hundred and four and 108 available data samples were obtained for aluminum and calcium evaluation, respectively, and were compared based on the sex, tooth type, caries history, and the number of the donor’s carious teeth at each pH. Calcium elution was not affected by the sex;however, more aluminum was eluted from boys’ than from girls’ teeth at pH 5.5. The aluminum release depended on the tooth type, and was significantly higher in incisors than in molars at a pH of 5.5. In relation to the caries history, aluminum (at pH 5.5) and calcium (at pH 6.2) dissolved more from sound regions of the enamel of caries-experienced teeth than from the enamel of teeth without caries experience. Moreover, aluminum markedly dissolved from enamel in artificial saliva at both pH 6.2 and 5.5 when the donor had more carious teeth, regardless of the presence or absence of caries experience in the sampled teeth. There is a possibility that the rate of aluminum elution from enamel into acidic fluid reflects individual caries sensitivity.展开更多

In this register-based cohort study, all children of 13 yrs of age (n = 18,142) who resided in the county of Stockholm, Sweden, in 2000 were included. The cohort was followed until individuals were 19 yrs of age. Information regarding dental caries was collected from the Public Health Care Administration in Stockholm. Data concerning prenatal and perinatal factors and parental socio-demographic determinants were collected from the Swedish Medical Birth Register and National Registers at Statistics Sweden. The final logistic regression model showed that birth weight (≥4000 g), adjusted for potential confounders, was significantly associated with caries increment (DMFT ≥ 1) between 13 and 19 yrs of age (OR: 1.29, 95% CI = 1.13 - 1.48). The relatively enhanced risk OR was further increased from 1.29 to 1.52 in sub- jects with birth weight (≥4600 g). On the contrary, subjects with birth weight (<2500 g) exhibited a sig- nificantly lower risk (OR: 0.67, 95% CI = 0.50 - 0.89) for exhibiting caries experience (DMFT ≥4) at 19 yrs of age. In conclusion, birth weight can be regarded as a predictor for dental caries and birth weight (≥4000 g) is especially a risk factor for caries increment during adolescence.展开更多

Methodology Cluster analyses were conducted using all data for children ages 0-4 years in aggregate: 1) for all subjects, and 2) for subjects without crowned restored teeth. Each of these two sets of analyses consisted of 8 differently specified cluster analyses as a validation procedure. Results The caries patterns identified from the clustering analysis are: 1) smooth surfaces (other than the maxillary incisor), 2) maxillary incisor, 3) occlusal surfaces of first molars, and 4) pit and fissure surfaces of second molars. Conclusion The cluster analysis findings were consistent with results produced by multidimensional scaling. These cross-validated patterns may represent resulting disease conditions from different risks or the timing of various risk factor exposures. As such, the patterns may be useful case definitions for caries risk factor investigations in children under 60 months of age.展开更多

Also, it is necessary to put in place prevention strategies to reduce its prevalence and improve access to oral care for these people.

文摘Incorrect family behavior in caring for the dental and oral health of preschool-aged children can affect the incidence of dental caries in these children and can cause more serious health problems in the future if not treated immediately,so it is important to find the right solution. This study aims to determine the effect of family counseling on dental and oral care for preschoolers. This study uses a narrative literature review method.Search articles using 5 databases(Pubmed,ScienceDirect,SpringerLink,ProQuest, and Google Scholar)to search for articles with the keywords family counseling AND Oral health AND Early Childhood Caries AND Behavior Change AND Family and the article selection process refers to the Flow diagram of the PRISMA Statement 2020.The results showed that there were 7 articles analyzed in this study. The implementation of family counseling has a significant effect in increasing self-efficacy,knowledge,ability,and motivation of the family,as well as the behavior of the child,to reduce the risk of dental caries in preschool-age children, taking into account several conditions. It was determined that family counseling is effective in reducing the incidence of dental caries in preschool children.
文摘To obtain the caries experience and, plaque accumulation severity and pit and fissure morphology in first permanent molars in 7-8 children in Wuhan, as a reasonable prediction of caries risk and preventive attention in the future, a convenient sample of five primary schools in the vicinity of the Wuhan University School and Hospital of Stomatology was drawn. Deed oits and fissures in high caries risk children should be sealed_

文摘Alkali production by oral bacteria is believed to have a major impact on oral microbial ecology and to be inibitory to the initiation and progression of dental caries. A substantial body of evidence is beginning to accumulate that indicates the modulation of the alkalinogenic potential of dental biofilms may be a promising strategy for caries control. This brief review highlights recent progress toward understanding molecular genetic and physiologic aspects of important alkali-generating pathways in oral bacteria, and the role of alkali production in the ecology of dental biofilms in health and disease.
文摘The estimate of dental caries among Chinese children at the microscale level using standard methodology remains unclear. Strategies for addressing the spatial inequity of childhood dental caries require geographical targeting.

文摘Objective: To explore the relationships between the daily total intake of fluoride, dental fluorosis and dental caries. Conclusion: It is important to monitor total fluoride exposure and protect children from excessive fluoride intake, especially during the years of tooth development.
文摘The epidemic tendency of dental caries of school students over the past 15 years in China was analyzed in order to provide bases for prevention of dental caries.Data sets of boys and girls at the age of 7,9,12 years(deciduous caries)and 7,9,12,14,17 years(permanent caries)were collected from the series of Chinese National Surveillance on Students Constitution and Health(CNSSCH)between 1991 to 2005,a survey that covers 30 provinces of and autonomous regions of China, with Tibet Autonomous Region and Taiwan P...
文摘Objective To analyze the prevalence and years lived with disability (YLD) from dental caries among children and adolescents and the time trends over the past two decades in Sichuan province, the largest province in west China. This work provides suggestions for the prevention and control for oral health in China with the policy of two-child.

文摘Recently, the diagnoses of dental caries and other dental issues are in a queue as only X-ray-based techniques are available in most hospitals around the world.Terahertz(THz)parametric imaging(TPI)is the latest technology that can be applied for medical applications, especially dental caries. This technology is harmless and thus suitable for biological samples owing to the low energy of THz emission. In this paper,a developed TPI system is used to investigate the two-dimensional(2 D)and three-dimensional(3D)images of different samples from human teeth. After analyzing the measured images of human teeth, the results suggest that the THz parametric technology is capable of investigating the inner side structure of the teeth. This technique can be useful in detecting the defects in all types of human and animal teeth. The measurement and analytical calculations have been performed by using the TPI system and MATLAB,respectively, and both are in good agreement. The characteristics of THz waves and their interactions with the tooth samples are summarized. And the available THz-based technologies, such as TPI,and their potential applications of diagnoses are also presented.
文摘Although aluminum itself was reported to prevent dental caries, previous in vitro studies reported that the aluminum level in the whole saliva of children was independent of caries prevalence. There is a possibility that the rate of aluminum elution from enamel into acidic fluid reflects individual caries sensitivity.

文摘This study aimed to assess whether birth weight is associated with dental caries during the teenage period. In conclusion, birth weight can be regarded as a predictor for dental caries and birth weight (≥4000 g) is especially a risk factor for caries increment during adolescence.

文摘Aim Cluster analysis was conducted on data from 5,169 United States (U.S.) Arizona children, age's 5-59-months with the goal of delineating patterns of caries in the primary dentition of pre-school children without a priori pattern definitions. As such, the patterns may be useful case definitions for caries risk factor investigations in children under 60 months of age.

文摘Secondary caries due to biofilm acids is a primary cause of dental composite restoration failure. To date, there have been no reports of dental composites that can repel protein adsorption and inhibit bacteria attachment. The objectives of this study were to develop a protein-repellent dental composite by incorporating 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine(MPC) and to investigate for the first time the effects of MPC mass fraction on protein adsorption, bacteria attachment, biofilm growth, and mechanical properties.Composites were synthesized with 0(control),0.75%,1.5%,2.25%,3%,4.5%and 6%of MPC by mass.A commercial composite was also tested as a control.Mechanical properties were measured in three-point flexure.Protein adsorption onto the composite was determined by the microbicinchoninic acid method.A human saliva microcosm biofilm model was used.Early attachment at 4 h,biofilm at 2 days,live/dead staining and colony-forming units(CFUs) of biofilms grown on the composites were investigated.Composites with MPC of up to 3%had mechanical properties similar to those without MPC and those of the commercial control, whereas 4.5%and 6%MPC decreased the mechanical properties(P〈0.05).Increasing MPC from 0 to 3%reduced the protein adsorption on composites(P〈0.05).The composite with 3%MPC had protein adsorption that was 1/12 that of the control(P〈0.05).Oral bacteria early attachment and biofilm growth were also greatly reduced on the composite with 3%MPC,compared to the control(P〈0.05).In conclusion, incorporation of MPC into composites at 3%greatly reduced protein adsorption, bacteria attachment and biofilm CFUs,without compromising mechanical properties.Protein-repellent composites could help to repel bacteria attachment and plaque build-up to reduce secondary caries. The protein-repellent method might be applicable to other dental materials.

文摘Objective:We applied hyperspectral imaging(HSI)system to distinguish early caries from soundand pigmented areas. It will provide a theoretical basis and technical support, for research anddevelopment of an instrument that could be used for screening and detection of early dentalcaries. Methods:Eighteen extracted human teeth(molars and premolars),with varying degrees ofnatural pathology and no degree of decay involving dentin were obtained.HSI system with awavelength range from 400 to 1000nm was used to obtain images of all 18 teeth containingsound, carious and pigmented areas. We compared the spectra of the wavebands at both 500 nmand 780 nm from the different tooth states, and the reflectance diference bet ween sound versuscarious lesions and sound versus pigmented areas, respectively. Results:There was a slight diference in refectance bet ween carious areas and pigmented areas at500 nm.A substantial difference was additionally noted in refectance bet ween carious areas andpigmented areas at 780 nm.Conclusion:The results have shown that the interference of tooth surface pigment can be elim-inated in the near-infrared(NIR)waveband,and the caries can be effectively identifed from the pigmented areas. Thus,it could be used to detect carious areas of teeth in place of the traditionalvisual inspection method or white light endoscopy.Clinical significance:The NIR difused light signal enables the identification of early caries frompigment and other interference, providing a reasonable detection tool for early detection andearly treatment of teeth diseases.
文摘Background:Having the ability to identify potential health risk factors such as lifestyle, ethnicity, health status, and social determinants associated with oral health status risk, health care providers can take an active role in health screening to discover any need for clinical preventive services, including dental preventive services, and can detect health problems. Methods:A descriptive type of cross-sectional study was conducted to explore the practice of common oral diseases among the patients visiting in the selected dental college and hospital in Bangladesh from October 2019 to December 2019.About 100 patients were interviewed through a semi-structured questionnaire, followed by an oral examination through a checklist and a face-to-face interview.A systematically random sampling technique was employed to select the study population. Results:Among them,the(21-30)year age group shows a maximum 20%,whereas the(71-80)year age group represents the minority with only 2%.Among them,56%were male and 44%were female.Students represent the majority of 26%,whereas others(day laborers)represent only 4%.Decayed teeth remained in 72%of cases, teeth were missing in 31%of cases, and filled teeth were present in 24%of cases.A majority of 71%clean teeth once daily, whereas only 29%clean teeth twice daily.Again, only 30%brush teeth at night and a maximum of 95%brush teeth in the morning. Moreover,a maximum of 68%use toothpaste and brushes, while only 4%use meswak for cleaning their teeth.About 4%of cases with no debris,51%of cases with less than 1/3rd of the tooth with debris,32%of cases with 1/3rd-2/3rd of the tooth with debris, and 13%of cases with more than 2/3rd of the tooth with debris were present.Again, about 30%had no calculus,52%less than 1/3rd of tooth,16%in between 1/3rd and 2/3rd of tooth, and 2%more than 2/3rd of the calculus was present.About 47%of mild,22%of moderate,6%of severe and 25%had no inflammation.Furthermore, for treatment purposes,20.69%was advised for scaling,19.66%for filling,16.90%for root canal treatment,17.59%for extraction,17.24%for prosthodontic treatment,1.03%for orthodontic treatment,2.07%for pulpotomy,2.41%for pulpectomy, and 2.41%for minor surgery.Overall, about 72%of the respondents, mostly the students, are suffering from decayed teeth, which may be due to a lack of frequency of brushing, indicating 95%that it is once daily. In addition, the most alarming situation among them is about 20.69%required scaling, which may be due to improper and inadequate brushing maintenance. Conclusion:to some extent, the above scenario may reflect the negative hallmark for our country’s younger generation in terms of oral health practice. Therefore, the establishment of a preventive oral health policy by our policymakers for the general population, mostly school-going students,on an emergency basis.
