Myzus persicae(M.persicae)is now considered a threat to agricultural crops due to economic losses.Numerous synthetic insecticides applied every year against M.persicae,are reported to be unsafe for environment,humans,and beneficial insects.Furthermore,several species of Myzus have been found to develop resistance due to over application of these insecticides.Therefore,it is required to find some novel insecticide that would be safe for the environment as well as for humans.In the current study,two major pure constituentsα-pinene andβ-caryophyllene were evaluated for their insecticidal potential against M.persicae using a fumigant toxicity assay.Furthermore,impact ofα-pinene andβ-caryophyllene on expression of five different genes,e.g.,HSP 60,FPPS I,OSD,TOL and ANT responsible for reproduction,dispersion,and growth of M.persicae has also been investigated.To perform fumigant toxicity assay,five different concentrations(3.5,4,4.5,5 and 6μL L−1)ofα-pinene andβ-caryophyllene were prepared.Lethal concentration(LC)was calculated,and gene expression studies were executed through qRT PCR at LC30 ofα-pinene andβ-caryophyllene.Both constituents demonstrated excellent fumigant toxicity effects against M.persicae at all five concentrations.However,α-pinene shows significantly better results(98%)as compared toβ-caryophyllene(80%)after 72 h at 6μL L−1 of dose.The highest upregulation in expression was demonstrated at LC30 dose ofα-pinene in five in three out of five genes understudy(TOL,ANT,and FPPS I).Conversely,two genes HSP 60 and OSD demonstrated downregulation at LC30 dose ofβ-caryophyllene.Conclusively,our results highlighted the promising insecticidal potential of both compoundsα-pinene andβ-caryophylleneby interfering with the reproduction and development related processes in M.persicae,allowing us to recommend the phytoconstituents under investigation as an ecofriendly alternative to synthetic insecticides. 展开更多

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from hydroxyl radical (OH.) initiated photooxidation of α-pinene was investigated in a home-made smog chamber. The size distribution of SOA particles was measured using aerodynamic particle sizer spectrometer. The effects of illumination intensity and light application time on SOA formation for α-pinene were evaluated. Experimental results show that the concentration of SOA particles increased significantly with an increasing of illumination intensity, and the light application time, the concentration, and the size of SOA particles were also increased. In addition, the factors influencing the formation of SOA were discussed. In addition, this article compared the effect of α-pinene with that of toluene, and discussed the contribution of α-pinene to SOA formation. 展开更多

It has been shown that hydrophobic porphyrins are anchored inside the zeolite pores according to flexible ligand method. It also has been examined that capsulation of metalloporphyrins inside the pores of solid supports change catalytic activity and stability. Bayesian inference is applied in this study to evaluate the posterior distribution of rate consents for a thermal isomerization of α-pinene by considering the uncertainty associated with rate constant parameters and kinetic model structural error. The kinetic model of the thermal isomerization of α-pinene is shown to have a mathematically ill-conditioned system that makes it difficult to apply gradient-based optimization methods for rate constant evaluation. The Bayesian inference relates the posterior probability distribution of the rate constants to the likelihood probability of modeled concentration of reaction products meeting the experimentally measured concentration and the prior probability distribution of the parameters. A Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is used to draw samples from posterior distribution while the Bayesian inference relationship is considered. Multinomial random walk Metropolis-Hastings is applied in this study to construct the histograms of rate constants as well as the confidence intervals and the correlation coefficient matrix. Results showed that the Bayesian approach can successfully apply to estimate the confidence interval of rate constants of reaction model by taking into consideration the uncertainty. 展开更多

Results: The research found α-pinene could inhibit the proliferation of SGC-7901 cells observably in vitro, and the inhibition rate assumes the dependence on concentration;and western blotting results showed that, α-pinene could activate phospho-ATM, increase the amount of γH2AX (p p < 0.05);increase the expression of p-CHK2, p53 and phos-p53 (p p p < 0.05);But there is no significant effect on expression of CHK2 (p > 0.05). Conclusions: α-pinene could inhibit the proliferation of SGC-7901 cells, and by inducing ATM (Ataxia Telangiectasia-Mutated) kinase signal pathway in DNA damage response, activating cell cycle checkpoint, making the cell cycle arrest then exerts its anti-tumor effects. 展开更多

Induced BVOC emissions from pyrolyzed plants that may accumulate in confined topographies have been a controversy for their role in wildfire eruptions or flashovers. α-pinene (C<sub>10</sub>H<sub>16</sub>) is one of the most abundant monoterpenes emitted from pyrolyzed Mediterranean vegetation in wildfires. Its thermal degradation under fire thermal stresses produces a range of highly flammable gases. In order to identify these products, thermal degradation experiments were performed on α-pinene in a tubular furnace in an inert atmosphere and a high-temperature range (300&deg;C - 900&deg;C). The pyrolysis products were identified using gas chromatography (GC) linked to a tubular furnace outlet by which their retention times were compared with those of reference standards. The degradation products were mainly terpenoids, aliphatic hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, ethene, propane, propene, 1,3-butadiene, isoprene), and aromatics (benzene, toluene) in addition to hydrogen. The radical mechanisms of the chemical reactions associated with the formation of the products at different experimental temperatures were addressed and compared with the literature. Monoterpenes, butadiene, isoprene, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and aromatics formations from α-pinene were consistent with the literature. However, even if benzene has been identified in our experiments, we cannot support with certainty the mechanisms of its formation described in the literature since acetylene was not observed. 展开更多

Pine wood nematode(PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is a serious pathogen of pines throughout the world. Previous work indicated that different concentrations of a-pinene could affect nematode reproduction,however the mechanism of that influence is not clear. In order to examine the reproductive strategies of PWN in response to the stress of the volatile material a-pinene, we investigated different aspects of population changes of B.xylophilus under two concentrations of a-pinene. The results show that a high concentration(214.5 mg ml-1)promoted population growth while a low concentration(56.33 mg ml-1) decreased the population. Population structure was analyzed and it was found that a high concentration of a-pinene decreased the percentage of adults but increased the percentages of larvae and eggs.Furthermore, from the results of an evaluation of sex ratios(female/male), it was determined that a high concentration could elevate sex ratios but a low concentration decreased ratios sharply. These results suggest that the PWN could regulate its population by changing sex ratios under stress of a-pinene. This study has provided a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of pine wilt disease caused by the pine wood nematode. 展开更多

Effect of relative humidity and the presence of aerosol particles on the α-pinene ozonolysis

The α-pinene ozonolysis under the different environmental conditions were observed in a smog chamber. The second-order rate constant (k) was determined to be (7.25 ± 0.06) x 10^-17 cm^3/(molecule.sec) under 20% of relative humidity (RH) and room temperature. RH showed a marked influence on the α-pinene ozonolysis. The value of k increased with KH increase, which was 1.6 times faster at RH = 80% than that at RH = 20%. Additionally, the value of k apparently changed in the presence of the aerosol particles. The diesel soot increased the k value. The fly ash prohibited the reaction, however, H2SO4-treated fly ash promoted the reaction. The information of products gained using FT-IR and SPAMS showed that pinonic acid, 10-hydroxy-pinonic acid and pinic acid could be generated during the α- pinene ozonolysis. Water molecules could take part in the formation of the products, and play a vital role in the degradation of α-pinene. The atmospheric residence time calculation showed that the ozonolysis in the atmosphere is an important way of the α-pinene consumption as compared to that reacted with OH during daytime. The results suggested that the degradation of α-pinene via the ozonization in the atmosphere may be affected greatly by RH, as well as the presence of aerosol particles. The ozonolysis reaction may be an important way of the a-pinene consumption during daytime. 展开更多

The isomerization reaction of pinene is one of the most important chemical reactions in the deep processing of pinene. The purpose of this study is to improve the performance of the metatitanic acid by composite. The composite metatitanic acid catalyst TiM was prepared by adding Mn elements in the preparation process. The catalytic performance of TiM was evaluated. Comparison of TiM and metatitanic acid catalyst(Ti-FGP), the reaction rate of TiM catalyst was faster, and after the reaction, the yield of camphene and tricyclene increased about 1%. The catalysts were characterized by an SEM, FT-IR and laser particle size analyzer. The results show that the pinene isomerization reaction requires the synergistic action of the Br?nsted acid and Lewis acid.Br?nsted acid has great influence on the activity of catalyst, and Lewis acid has a great influence on the selectivity of the catalyst. The structure and morphology of the catalyst have a certain effect on the selectivity of pinene isomerization reaction. 展开更多

Objective:To examine the chemical variability in inflorescences of wild populations of Stachys lavandulifolia Vahl(S.lavandulifolia)collected throughout two provinces(lsfahan and Chaharmahal va Bakhtiary),Southwest Iran.Methods:The essential oils of S.lavandulifolia Vahl from seven locations were obtained by hydro-distillation and analysed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.Results:The results revealed that distinct differences in the content of compounds depending on region of sample collection.The main constituents of the essential oils wereα-thujone(0.3%-32.3%),α-pinene(trace to 37.3%),myrcene(0.5%-15.9%),β-phellandrene(1.1%-37.9%),germacrene D(0.4%-11.3%),△-cadinene(trace to 11.6%)and 1,4-methano-1 H-indene(trace to 10.1%).Conclusions:The results of the present study indicated that essential oil components of S.lavandulifolia Vahl can be varied with genetic(ecotype),environmental conditions and geographic origin,In general,the essential oils of various populations of S.lavandulifolia Vahl were rich in monoterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids. 展开更多

We compared two different strategies to increase the catches oflps typographus (L.), particularly males, in pheromone-baited traps. The first of these strategies, the barrier approach, used alternating pheromone blends, targeting males and females respectively, in closely-spaced traps forming a barrier around forest stands. The second strategy, the single trap approach, used widely-spaced traps that were all baited with the same lure and intended to trap the highest possible numbers of males without compromising trapping of females. In the blend used for the barrier traps targeting primarily males, with a lower percentage of (4S)-cis-verbenol (cV), the (-)-α-pinene was replaced step wise with (+)-limonene at rates of 0%, 1%, 10%, 35%, 60% and 90%. This replacement had no significant effect on the numbers of responding 1. typographus males, but there was a slight effect on the percentage of males caught. In the attractant blend for the barrier traps targeting females, with a higher percentage of cV, the 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol (MB) was replaced with 1-methoxy-2-propanol (MP) in a similar fashion as for the male-specific blends. The replacement did not significantly affect the catch of females. Thus, it is pos- sible to use the MP in the blend with cV and ipsdienol without significant change in catch efficacy. In the blends for single traps, the (-)-α- pinene was replaced with (+)-limonene and MB with MP. The replacement of (-)-α-pinene had only a slight effect on the percentage of males, but the results suggest that replacing MB with MP in the blend will not significantly reduce trapping efficacy. 展开更多

In the present investigation, we studied new essential oil contents and compositions of three individual plants from Cupressaceae family cultivated in Vietnam. The air-dried plants were hydrodistilled and the oils analysed by Gas chromatography (GC) and Gas chromatography couples with Mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The components were identified by comparison of their retention indices on HP-5 MS capillary column with literature reference and MS pattern with authentic library’s collection. a-Pinene (36.0%), α-cedrol (18.3%) and thujopsene (5.7%) were the main constituents of Cupressus tonkiensis Silba. Monoterpenes were the quantitative significant compounds of Sabina chinensis (L.) Antoine. These are bornyl acetate (19.5%), sabinene (17.3%) and a-pinene (15.8%). Moreover, the main compounds of Thuja orientalis L., were identified as a-pinene (34.1%), α-cedrol (16.5%), β-caryophyllene (5.4%) and β-selinene (5.2%). In this study, four samples of Tunisian propolis were analyzed for their volatile compounds. Static Headspace technique coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used for the volatile profile characterization. Statistical investigation of the samples was made applying hierarchical clustering method, K-Means cluster and principal component analysis. Results showed that 47, 36, 30 and 24 different compounds were identified, respectively, in the samples from Zouarine, Zelligua, Bizerte and Beni Khalled. Propolis volatiles were dominated by monoterpene hydrocarbons. α-pinene was the major compound representing 81.14%, 82.67% and 90.74%, respectively, of the total propolis volatiles collected from Zelligua, Beni Khalled and Zouarine and only 45.22% of the sample from Bizerte which had a very different composition. The volatile constituents of the essential oil of Hymenocrater longiflorus Benth. growing wild in Kurdistan-Iran were investigated using the GC and GC/MS techniques. Fifteen compounds, representing twenty (97.03%) of the total oil were identified. The main components were: α- Pinene (22.47%), β-Caryophyllene (18.05%), β- Eudesmol (14.92%), α-Copaene (9.84%), γ-Elemene (6.79%), δ-Cadine-ne (6.13%), (–)Bornyl acetate (5.61%), α-Amorphene (3.84%), α-Fen- chyl acetate (2.35%) and β-Pinene (2.07%). Some of the physicochemical properties like the logarithm of calculated Octanol-Water partitioning coefficients (log Kow), total biodegradation and (TBd in mol/h and gr./h), water solubility (Sw, mg.L-1 at 25oC) and median lethal concentration 50 (LC50) were calculated for the 15 com- ponents of Hymenocrater longiflorus Benth. 展开更多

PM2.5 aerosol samples were collected over 12 hr and 24 hr intervals in an inland background area, Gongga Mountain National Nature Reserve(hereafter shortened to Gongga), during the summer of 2011. Polar organic tracers, inorganic ions and meteorological data were measured. The purpose of this work was to investigate the variation patterns, formation and sources of the secondary organic aerosol tracers in the studied atmosphere. The average concentrations of isoprene oxidation products, α-pinene oxidation products, β-caryophyllinic acid, sugars, sugar alcohols and anhydrosugars were 88.6 ± 106.1, 3.6 ± 5.7,0.13 ± 0.30, 13.6 ± 13.1, 31.9 ± 31.4 and 14.8 ± 10.7 ng/m^3 respectively in all aerosol samples.The aged α-pinene second organic aerosol(SOA) tracers(i.e., 3-hydroxyglutraric acid(3 HGA), 3-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylglutaric acid(HDMGA), 3-acetylpentandioic acid(APDA) and 3-methyl-1,2,3-butanetricarboxylic acid(MBTCA)) correlated significantly with each other in the 24 hr PM2.5 aerosol samples, indicating that OH· is the major factor controlling the formation of these α-pinene SOA tracers. Using the positive matrix factorization(PMF) model and the tracer-based source apportionment method, we calculated that isoprene oxidation products, α-pinene oxidation products, sesquiterpene oxidation products, biomass burning, fungi spores and anthropogenic SOA accounted for 21.9% ± 5.5%, 8.4% ± 2.1%, 3.0% ± 0.7%, 5.2% ± 5.3%, 5.0% ± 6.2% and 31.4% ± 7.8% of organic carbon respectively during the sampling period. 展开更多

Microorganisms associated with insects have been widely reported to metabolize toxic chemicals, which may help both microorganisms and host insects overcome host conifer defense. Dendroctonus valens LeConte, an introduced exotic pest from North America to China, has killed millions of healthy pines. Alpha-pinene is the most abundant defensive monoterpene in Chinese Pinus tabuliformis. Although microorganisms associated with D. valens have already been investigated, little is known about their bioactivities when encountering host defensive monoterpenes. In this study, we evaluated the influences of different concentrations ofα- pinene to D. valens and the three most frequently isolated yeasts and bacteria ofD. valens, and further assayed microorganisms' capabilities to degrade α-pinene. Results showed that the gallery lengths and body weight changes of bark beetles were significantly affected by 6 mg/mL and 12 mg/mL of α-pinene applied in media compared to controls. The tolerance of experimental microorganisms to α-pinene varied depending on the microbial species. Two out of three yeast strains and all three bacterial strains degraded 20%-50% of α-pinene compared to controls in 24 h in vitro. The microorganisms capable of α-pinene degradation in vitro and their tolerance to high levels ofα-pinene suggested that D. valens- associated microorganisms may help both microorganisms and the bark beetle overcome host α-pinene defense. 展开更多
