The latest College English Curriculum issued by MOE (Ministry of Education) does not reflect the trend of developing College English Teaching by focusing on ESP, but rather on improving general English course books. However, the first local College English Curriculum published in 2012 in Shanghai focuses on developing ESP and English for academic purpose as its teaching objectives. This paper analyzes different definitions of ESP in China's education setting, compares different views on handling the relationship between EGP and ESP in China's College English Reform, and explores how to apply an appropriate notion of EGP to College English teaching in China.展开更多

In the way of consecutive interpreting, the researcher has done the experiments to 147 undergraduate interpreters of non-English majors in five classes taught by him in the second semester from 2014 to 2015. The experimental results show that listening of EAP has the functions of relevance and holistic presupposition to student interpreters, whose audio nerves have been activated once more while listening to SL (source language) information. At this moment, the function of transferring SL information as input occurs. And further, speaking of EAP also has the functions of relevance and holistic presupposition to student interpreters, whose oral nerves have been activated once more while encoding and expressing in TL (target language). At this moment the results of transferring information as TL output are prominent. Therefore, Visual-Audio-Oral Course of EAP has the effect of relevance, transfer and presupposition to student interpreters' interpreting operation in China.展开更多

On a basis of classroom discourse analysis, this paper has observed 14 courses with 21 hours in total from advanced and fundamental grades in an English department. The classroom observation has been transcribed to analyze the features of teacher talk in various English courses in terms of five dimensions--discourse quantity, questioning types, feedback manners, interactional modification features, and conversation chains, It is found that on average there is significant difference in those five dimensions between fundamental and advanced courses. In terms of discourse quantity, the teacher talk has occupied more than 80% of the total talk amount and the total teacher talk in advanced courses is more than that in fundamental ones; the number of display questions is much more than that of referential questions; evaluative feedbacks are more than discursive ones; all of the teachers prefer to employ confirmation checks to modify students' answer, and half of the conversational chains are IRF (Initial-Response-Follow-up) structure while another half are full of complicated chains. The paper then provides some suggestions and implications for EFL teaching in the light of these findings.展开更多

This study reports on the issue of comparing English language curricula by means of an institutional review in a northeast province in China in 2012. The study was essentially a qualitative inquiry with data collected online through documents submitted by the institutions and through semi-structured follow-up interviews. Thirty-seven participants from 12 institutions participated in the study. Research findings indicated that curriculum orientations varied across institutions and were reflected in their curriculum designs. Such a modus operandi, it is anticipated, may shed useful light on the understanding of curriculum reform currently being conducted in China in light of the rising demand for, and the needs of, internationalized and localized curricula, as well as providing an understanding of curricula at various institutions.展开更多
