CSIRO has recently developed a real-time roof monitoring system for under-groundcoal mines and successfully tried the system in gate roads at Ulan Mine. The systemintegrated displacement monitoring, stress monitoring and seismic monitoring in onepackage. It included GEL multianchor extensometers, vibrating wire uniaxial stress meters,ESG seismic monitoring system with microseismic sensors and high-frequency AE sensors. The monitoring system automated and the data can be automatically collected by acentral computer located in an underground nonhazardous area. The data are then transferredto the surface via an optical fiber cable. The real-time data were accessed at anylocation with an Internet connection. The trials of the system in two tailgates at Ulan Minedemonstrate that the system is effective for monitoring the behavior and stability of roadwaysduring Iongwall mining. The continuous roof displacement/stress data show clearprecursors of roof falls. The seismic data (event count and locations) provide insights intothe roof failure process during roof fall. 展开更多

Institutional support is an essential antecedent for lecturer's preparedness for e-learning. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of institutional support through appropriate training programs and budgetary allocation on lecturers' preparedness for e-learning at the University of Nairobi. A cross-sectional survey design was applied to source data from 212 lecturers and 96 administrative staff. Both quantitative and qualitative techniques were applied to process, analyze, and interpret the data. Quantitative analysis yielded descriptive statistics as well as cross tabulations with Chi-square (x^2) statistic. The study found lack of significant relationship between lecturer's preparedness for e-learning and knowledge of the existence of an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) training program. The existing training program was still underdeveloped in terms of funding and strategies. Lecturers' preparedness for e-learning was also not significantly associated with perceived effectiveness of the existing training program; but was significantly related to training in software tools, as well as the source of funding for training. Although a team of ICT experts has been mandated to help academic staff prepare for e-learning, the team's functionality was constrained by under-funding and multiple roles. Lecturer's preparedness for e-learning also significantly associated with perceived adequacy of budgetary allocation for ICT program at the departmental level. Under-funding was a key factor constraining access to computers at the workplace, reliable internet connectivity and timely technical support, all of which significantly associated with lecturers' preparedness for e-learning. Universities in resource-poor settings should consider creating necessary partnerships to create avenues for information and resource sharing, revamp existing training programs with fmancial and human resources, create linkages with funding institutions, as well as improve budgetary allocation to ensure universal access to functional computers at the workplace, reliable internet connectivity and timely technical support. 展开更多

Bioreactor operation requires continuous monitoring of fermentation parameters and real-time control over bioreactor devices. Remote monitoring and control of the bioreactor's computer via the Internet avoids the necessity of personnel being continually onsite during operation. A two liter Sartorius-stedim Biostat~ A Plus fermentation system was networked and interfaced with the commercial software from GoToMyPC to allow remote control of the fermentation system utilizing the internet. The fermentation vessel was equipped with hardware calibrated for monitoring and controlling culture parameters during experimentations. The uniform resource locator controlled night-vision web camera allowed continuous monitoring of the glass fermentation vessel during the day and at night. The main window screen of the laboratory computer can be securely accessed from any portable device (i.e. laptop) capable of establishing an Internet connection and executing the commercial software from GoToMyPC. The secured internet protocol address, provided by GoToMyPC, assures that the system can only be controlled by authorized users who have been given access to the account. This interface permits the remote control of the Biostat A Plus fermentation system and possibly other automated or potentially automated culturing systems at the convenience of the user(s). 展开更多

The aim of this paper is to assess business performances of a satellite TV--Korea Telecom Skylife (KTS)---to innovate its business model related to current technical events such as hybrid platform, digital conversion, and Intemet connected TV. For this, a theoretical logic is approached what levels of business model innovations there are, based on the "business model framework (BMF)" theory by Henry Chesbrough. Based on this theoretical backdrop, this study focuses on KTS's approach to utilize technical events to develop its business model and contribute to the company's earnings and operating cost expenditure. In conclusion, it will show the feasibility and the limitation to upgrade this firm's business model innovation in the smart media business ecosystem based on the last technical event, Internet connected TV. 展开更多

New digital technologies, especially new communication networks connected within the internet, are becoming increasingly more important as tools for management, information distribution, and as radically new models of cultural production. This paper takes a deep look at the Tosakan Project, a community project in Saraburi province, Thailand. This project combines concepts of folk media, digital storytelling, and the participatory model of Web 2.0 in order to solve community problems. Herein, it is shown how diverse groups in this community project work together using social network channels such as Facebook and Line to digitally tell folk stories through videos and disseminate the content to a wider audience via Facebook and other digital sharing outlets such as YouTube. 展开更多

The purpose of this study was to establish factors that lead to poor integration of Information and communication technology (ICT) for teaching and learning in schools in Kenya, despite comprehensive policy, institutional, infrastructural frameworks and capacity building by the Ministry of Education. The subject of this study was administered by use of questionnaires in three categories of public schools: national school, provincial schools and district schools. The respondents were students from each level that is from one, two, three and four and teachers based on the most offered subjects in the secondary schools. The computer assisted learning facilities were classified into computers, internet and content in optical media. In national school Internet based research, optical media content provided by Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development and Cyber School program for science subjects was used in learning. In provincial school, it lacks adequate computers, reliable Internet and content in optical media. In district school, it lacks adequate computer, no internet connection and content in optical media. A learner management system which can be accessed by all learners by use of any internet access devices like mobile phone access will be an ideal tool with over 4,000,000 mobile phone subscribers currently in Kenya. 展开更多
