To conform to the college English teaching reform from English for General Purposes (EGP) to English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in the vital transfer era, the Foreign Language Department of Second Military Medical University (SMMU) launched an English for Medical Academic Purpose (EMAP) curriculum with English Forum on Medical Humanities (EFMH), a project-based teaching practice. Based on Rogers' learner-centered humanistic teaching approach which emphasizes students' involvement and experiences in learning, EFMH puts students and their practice in a central place. After four-year exploration and operation, the Forum has developed from a small-scaled embryo into an internationalized, standardized and professionalized event, having produced fruitful outcomes. It is expected that the success of EFMH will provide inspiring experiences and enlightenments for higher medical education in terms of academic English teaching and teachers' responsibilities to foster high-quality medical students. 展开更多

Honored as the father of the study on China's comparative literature, he was one of the earliest scholars who systematically applied the theories of Western literature and the method of comparative literature to research A Dream in Red Mansions. In his early life, he was enlightened by the Guan school (a school of Neo-Confucianism), and later he studied in the U.S. where he was deeply influenced by Irving Babbitt's new humanistic thought. Throughout his lifetime, he advocated the thought of having a thorough knowledge of both China and the West, and devoted himself to the cultivation of "well-informed and refined" qualities. In fact, WU Mi's thoughts owes greatly to the education he received in his childhood. Although it is common for Chinese students to learn English for many years, they are still confronted with problems when it comes to communicating with people in English. Lack of working hard, necessary learning context, and interest does play a part; however, the problem really lies mostly in teaching process, so, to improve the quality of learning, teachers should bear more responsibilities and do more to bring humanism to English class and enhance student-centeredness. To achieve this goal, teachers should know more about students' learning styles so as to apply different approaches to students with different learning styles. What is more, priority should be given to analysis of learners' needs as well as preferences, on the basis of which a curriculum can be developed to meet the needs of a particular group of students. Finally, improvement of learner autonomy will lead to the shift of learning responsibilities from teacher to students, thus achieving student-centered learning ultimately. 展开更多

There is the question--can we hope that humanism and erudition can redevelop nowadays? In the long history of humanistic inheritance, from ancient times till the end of the 18th century, there was obvious decadence of essential humanistic points. As the historial period, humanism means revival of classical culture, and as a specific culturological phenomenon, it means erudite education created by Hellens and developed by Romans, who recovered "humanitas" as global education. Italy was the first who helped humanists to contemplate on classical culture; and in post-medieval age, Italian humanists achieved a supreme measure of humanism through their "humanistic studies." We will try to point out good achievements of humanism erudite education in European culture in later epochs. Humanism leads man to turn over to world--after medieval stricture--and it becomes self-conscious revolution, what we can see in Latin literature till the 18th century. Rise of individualism, development of libraries and humanistic academies give chance to latin tradition in European literature as universal discipline, including erudite education in international corpus (Ragusa also). High-intellectual and latinized elites with humanistic state of mind develop complex spiritual inteligency with science requests in later epochs too. We will try to explain in which degree humanism, with its synthetic point of view, influences on later corpus of European literary themes and how great its actuallity is nowdays. 展开更多

At the Crossroads: A Case Study of Humanism in High School English Education in China

The concept of "equality" and the importance of "rational and critical thinking" are essential components of humanism. New English Curriculum for Chinese Primary Schools and Junior/Senior High Schools indicates English is not only a "Tool", but also carries information and features of "Humanism". This article conducted one year-long qualitative case study of three high school English teachers from different districts in Beijing. Data were collected through class observation, teachers' office observation, and interviews with teachers, students, and parents Data analysis followed qualitative procedures. Findings show that the three English teachers do not have strong awareness of humanism: None of them believes students and teachers are equal. Two teachers incorporate "rational and critical thinking" when they work as head teachers, but neither applies it when they serve as English teachers. Humanistic education is not prevalent but effective in teachers' development training. More relevant trainings are expected to benefit more teachers. 展开更多
