English Forum on Medical Humanities of SMMU:An interdisciplinary innovative teaching practice

To conform to the college English teaching reform from English for General Purposes (EGP) to English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in the vital transfer era, the Foreign Language Department of Second Military Medical University (SMMU) launched an English for Medical Academic Purpose (EMAP) curriculum with English Forum on Medical Humanities (EFMH), a project-based teaching practice. Based on Rogers' learner-centered humanistic teaching approach which emphasizes students' involvement and experiences in learning, EFMH puts students and their practice in a central place. After four-year exploration and operation, the Forum has developed from a small-scaled embryo into an internationalized, standardized and professionalized event, having produced fruitful outcomes. It is expected that the success of EFMH will provide inspiring experiences and enlightenments for higher medical education in terms of academic English teaching and teachers' responsibilities to foster high-quality medical students.

On the Strategies for Teaching Courses of English Literature in the Period of University Transformation Toward Application-oriented Education

In the 21 st century, the transformation of higher education toward application orientation is posing challenges to the university teachers, especially to the teachers of humanities. Combining the teaching practice with the teaching methods and theories of domestic and foreign scholars, this article intends to explore the strategies for teaching courses of English literature in such a transformational period, including multiple teaching strategies and the cultivation of innovative thinking, cultivation of students＇ ability to use English with the works of English literature as language materials, use of realistic contexts to spread classic western language and culture. These teaching strategies can enhance the practicability and effectiveness of the curricula, and expand the teaching space of literature.

Humanistic Principles in the Circle of European Literature Themes

There is the question--can we hope that humanism and erudition can redevelop nowadays？ In the long history of humanistic inheritance, from ancient times till the end of the 18th century, there was obvious decadence of essential humanistic points. As the historial period, humanism means revival of classical culture, and as a specific culturological phenomenon, it means erudite education created by Hellens and developed by Romans, who recovered ＂humanitas＂ as global education. Rise of individualism, development of libraries and humanistic academies give chance to latin tradition in European literature as universal discipline, including erudite education in international corpus （Ragusa also）. High-intellectual and latinized elites with humanistic state of mind develop complex spiritual inteligency with science requests in later epochs too. We will try to explain in which degree humanism, with its synthetic point of view, influences on later corpus of European literary themes and how great its actuallity is nowdays.

At the Crossroads： A Case Study of Humanism in High School English Education in China

The concept of ＂equality＂ and the importance of ＂rational and critical thinking＂ are essential components of humanism. New English Curriculum for Chinese Primary Schools and Junior/Senior High Schools indicates English is not only a ＂Tool＂, but also carries information and features of ＂Humanism＂. This article conducted one year-long qualitative case study of three high school English teachers from different districts in Beijing. Data were collected through class observation, teachers＇ office observation, and interviews with teachers, students, and parents Data analysis followed qualitative procedures. Findings show that the three English teachers do not have strong awareness of humanism： None of them believes students and teachers are equal. Two teachers incorporate ＂rational and critical thinking＂ when they work as head teachers, but neither applies it when they serve as English teachers. Humanistic education is not prevalent but effective in teachers＇ development training. More relevant trainings are expected to benefit more teachers.

Singapore＇s Chinese literature education has continuously evolved and advanced over the years, forming a unique style in global Chinese education, which can be described as： ＂Singapore pie＂. Through its bilingual policy, the Singapore government has been committed to creating a pool of bicultural talents, by supplementing the teaching of Chinese language with classes on Chinese literature and culture. This thesis seeks to understand the pros and cons of Chinese literature education in Singapore by analysing its development over the years. The teaching of Chinese literature began with the first wave of Chinese migration to Nanyang in the 19th century, and from there, it went through three phases of development： relocation, adjustment, and burgeoning.
