Throat swabs were cultured first in the selective media Ashdown's broth then subcultured on Ashdown's agar to isolate Burkholderia pseudomallei which was recovered from seven cases (8.33%). Four isolates were from renal failure patients (23.53%), two from diabetic patients (11.76%) and the seventh isolate was from an outpatient with tonsillitis. All isolates were able to produce capsules, form filament chains, exhibit swarming motility and were arabinose non assimilators (Ara-) indicative of their virulence. Additionally, isolated B. pseudomallei were found to produce protease, lipase, hemolysin, and lecithinase and were able to produce biofilm, the root of many troublesome persistent infections that resist antibiotic treatment. Susceptibility of the seven isolates of B. pseudomallei toward 11 antibiotics was assessed, isolates were found multiply resistant to all antibiotics apart from ciproflaxin. This study confirms for the first time isolation of B. pseudomallei from immunocompromised patients in Basrah city of Iraq and describes their virulence potentials.展开更多

It is based on a flexible and modular software architecture (Framework Engine), in which each functional module (representing the GNC subsystems) implements a key functionality of the GNC (Guidance Navigation and Control). Modules communicate by means of standardised interfaces designed for exchange of necessary information among the modules composing the entire system. This approach permits the interchange-ability of each subsystem without affecting the overall functionalities of the GNC system. In this paper, the TBRA system, together with the implemented functional modules will be described. Tests results will be reported and future development will be discussed.展开更多

Experiments have found that membrane tubes can be extracted from giant lipid vesicles by groups of kinesin. How these motors cooperate in extracting the membrane tube is a very important issue but still unclear so far. In this paper, we propose a cooperation mechanism called two-track-dumbbell model, in which kinesin is regarded as a dumbbell with an end (tail domain) tethered on the fluid-like membrane and the other end (head domain) stepping on the microtubule. Taking account of the elasticity of kinesin molecule and the excluded volume effect of both the head domain and the tail domain of kinesin, which are not considered in previous models, we simulate the growth process of the membrane tube pulled by kinesin motors. Our results indicate that in the case of strong or moderate exclusion of motor tails, the average number of motors pulling the tube can be as high as 9 and thus motors moving along a single microtubule protofilament can generate enough force to extract membrane tubes from vesicles. This result is different from previous studies and may be tested by future experiments.展开更多
