Thomas Hardy is an English poet and regional novelist, and Tess of the d'Urbervilles is a novel written by him. The main character Tess is an innocent and pretty country girl tossed into dangerous situations brought about by fate. Thomas Hardy uses a lot of symbolic meanings which imply the main character, Tess' nature, mind and situation. This article will analyze the symbolic meanings of the novel. 展开更多

The HINT project is a four-country collective of Global heritage interpretation. HINT is a two-year project part funded Geoparks researching the uses and benefits of new technologies in by the European Leader Programme. The partners are Geopark Shetland (Scotland), Chablais Geopark (France), North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (England) and Geopark de Hondsrug (The Netherlands). Each partner has developed a pilot project to investigate the practicalities of interpreting and communicating heritage, especially geological heritage, using a particular technology. An overview of each of the four pilot projects is given. The overall aim of the pilot projects is to develop best practice in using new technologies for heritage interpretation and to share information and ideas within the project partnership and with geoparks and heritage organizations around the world. This paper, developed by the HINT partners, aims to give an insight into the practical process of developing interpretive tools using new technologies. Some common problems are highlighted and some ways in which these can be addressed are shown. 展开更多

The term geopoetics has a wide interpretation. It is defined as a project of the cultural activity aimed at creating and changing territorial myths and research path, which considers the interaction between literary creativity and geographical space. Defining this term, it is possible to introduce a geopoetical analysis diagram based on three interconnected positions: the writer's personality, the universe of an artwork and its characters. The Last Novik--A historical novel by Lazhechnikov analysis example presented on a diagram reveals the relationship between time and space in the literary work, as well as the author's interaction with the described events. 展开更多

Research on the stress gradient hypothesis recognizes that positive(i.e. facilitative) and negative(i.e. competitive) plant interactions change in intensity and effect relative to abiotic stress experienced on a gradient. Motivated by observations of alpine treeline ecotones, we suggest that this switch in interaction could operate along a gradient of relative size of individual plants. We propose that as neighbors increase in size relative to a focal plant they improve the environment for that plant up to a critical point. After this critical point is surpassed, however, increasing relative size of neighbors will degrade the environment such that the net interaction intensity becomes negative. We developed a conceptual(not site or species specific) individual based model to simulate a single species with recruitment, growth, and mortality dependent on the environment mediated by the relative size of neighbors. Growth and size form a feedback. Simulation results show that the size gradient model produces metrics similar to that of a stress gradient model. Visualizations reveal that the size gradient model produces spatial patterns that are similar to the complex ones observed at alpine treelines. Size-mediated interaction could be a mechanism of the stress gradient hypothesis or it could operate independent of abiotic stress. 展开更多

Aims In estuarine salt-marshes,nitrate supply and soil salinity, which are known as two main environmental drivers, simultaneously affect the interspecific interactions between plant species. However,to date, their interactive effects on interspecific interactions have not been closely examined for salt-marsh plant species. Methods Juvenile plants of Suaeda salsa L.(Chenopodiaceae)and Scirpus planiculmis Fr.(Cyperaceae)were grown in rinsed river sand to conduct a greenhouse experiment with three treatment categories:interspecific interaction(mixed culture or monoculture),three salinity levels(1,50 and 100 mmol L^(-1))and three nitrate levels(0.5,5 and 10 mmol L^(-1)).First,height and biomass of all plants were measured. Then, the growth data, relative interaction index and competitive important index of the two species were analyzed.Important Findings The interspecific interactions between S.salsa and S.planiculmis were facilitation across the salinity gradients. The promotion of S.salsa growth with high nitrate supply did not enhance the facilitative effect of the species, especially at low salinity. However, high nitrate supply significantly shifted the interspecific interactions of S.planiculmis from facilitation to competition at high salinity. Our results suggest that excessive nitrate application changes the prediction of the stress-gradient hypothesis along a salinity gradient, leading to collapse of the two species coexistence in the salt-marshes.These findings make a contribution to the understanding of how S.salsa and S.planiculmis,as well as salt-marsh communities, respond to the human modification of estuarine nutritional levels. 展开更多

The ground and low-lying collective states of a rotating system of N=3 bosons harmonically confined in quasi-two-dimension and interacting via repulsive finite-range Gaussian potential is studied in weakly to moderately interacting regime. The N-body Hamiltonian matrix is diagonalized in subspaces of quantized total angular momenta 0 ≤ L ≤ 4N to obtain the ground and low-lying eigenstates. Our numerical results show that breathing modes with N-body eigenenergy spacing of 2hω⊥,known to exist in strictly 2D system with zero-range(δ-function) interaction potential, may as well exist in quasi-2D system with finite-range Gaussian interaction potential. To gain an insight into the many-body states, the von Neumann entropy is calculated as a measure of quantum correlation and the conditional probability distribution is analyzed for the internal structure of the eigenstates. In the rapidly rotating regime the ground state in angular momentum subspaces L=(q/2)N(N-1) with q=2,4 is found to exhibit the anticorrelation structure suggesting that it may variationally be described by a Bose–Laughlin like state. We further observe that the first breathing mode exhibits features similar to the Bose–Laughlin state in having eigenenergy, von Neumann entropy and internal structure independent of interaction for the three-boson system considered here.On the contrary, for eigenstates lying between the Bose–Laughlin like ground state and the first breathing mode, values of eigenenergy, von Neumann entropy and internal structure are found to vary with interaction. 展开更多
