These enhance national energy security and are among the cl...The global trends of increasing oil and gas costs have compelled coal possessing countries to start long term underground coal gasification (UCG) projects. These enhance national energy security and are among the cleanest, ecologically safest coal utilization technologies. This paper delineates the major characteristics of such technologies and analyzes technical solutions. Highlighting the desire to develop large scale industrial UCG plants, pilot level projects are presented using a new UCG method developed in Russia by Joint Stock Company Gazprom Promgaz. This method is distinct for its high controllability, stability, and energy efficiency. New, efficient technical solutions have been developed over the last 10-15 years and are patented in Russia. They guarantee controllability and stability of UCG gas produc- tion. Over one hundred iniection and gas production wells have been operated simultaneously.展开更多

That system, however, is subject to immense strain as a result of rapid ec...For many years, China has made great strides in constructing a sizeable and stable energy supply system rooted mainly in domestic coal supply. That system, however, is subject to immense strain as a result of rapid economic growth, rising living standard, widespread environmental degradation, limited oil reserves and uneven resources distribution. Industrialization and urbanization since the early 1980s have imposed structural constraints on its traditional coal-based energy supply model. Eventually, China became a net oil-importer in 1993 when ten million tons of crude oil and petroleum products from abroad fed into the local economies of the coastal areas. Such a change meant that energy security has become an increasingly sensitive issue to the central government of China. This paper argues that China could benefit from a more open energy supply by striking to a balance of both domestic and international sources, rather than the traditional mode emphasized on a highly self-sufficiency rate.展开更多

In the last 20 years, in rural and remote areas of Vietnam, there has been a significant increase of small-scale household biogas dig...Biogas from livestock waste is considered as clean and renewable energy in Vietnam. In the last 20 years, in rural and remote areas of Vietnam, there has been a significant increase of small-scale household biogas digesters. Biogas digesters create the benefits of replacing energy and mitigation of climate change caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emission and deforestation for firewood and charcoal. Livestock waste produces approximately 85 million tonnes every year and continues to increase, meaning there are huge feedstocks for biogas digesters to meet the energy demands in households. However, there are also many constraints on the development programme for small-scale household biogas digester. In Vietnam, the socio-economic situation and the lack of a sustainable energy policy for biogas from livestock sector are hindering the growth of the biogas digester industry. Government subsidies are needed to encourage farmers to participate. This paper will be helpful not only for the sustainable development of household biogas in Vietnam, but also for the developing program of biogas generation in developing countries with similar agricultural economies to Vietnam.展开更多

Within these dual space-time coordinates, academic research should address the question...In this era of "liquid modernity," China faces the dual pressures of external globalization and internal social transformation. Within these dual space-time coordinates, academic research should address the question of what makes national identity possible by moving away from its fixation on macro-narratives and concrete micro-analysis of civic or ethnic identity, etc., to focus on meso-analysis. To do this, it is important to allay individuals' ontological anxiety so that they return to ontological security; to realize the production and reproduction of a national centripetal force; and to highlight the functional power of national identity. Both theoretical studies and real-world experience show that national identity cannot play a stable and coherent role on its own, but needs the structural support of three fundamental systems: economic incentives, political values, and institutional organization. The functional cohesion of these systems provides an effective path to the realization of national identity.展开更多
