Droplet-based microfluidics allows the improvement of nanoparticle homogeneity and the tuning of particle properties. It supports combinatorial synthesis of inorganic as well as organic substances and can be applied for the cultivation and screening of bacteria, eucaryotic cells and fish embryos. The well-ordered handling and the addressing of microfluid segments improves the information transfer between chemical, biological and electronic systems. Despite this remarkable technical progress, there is a particular importance of microfluidics for future nanotechnological solutions. The hierarchical spatial organization of liquids, particles and gels in microfluidics represents a fundamental biomimetic principle which overcomes the limits of planar technology and opens the gate for realizing complex structured threedimensional nanoarchitectures. Recent applications of microstructured fluids in chemistry and biology and concepts for future developments will be discussed.展开更多

The Bible has been translated into many languages, including Tshivenda. Translating a text from the source language into the target language is always characterized by translational problems. The first version of the ...The Bible has been translated into many languages, including Tshivenda. Translating a text from the source language into the target language is always characterized by translational problems. The first version of the Tshivenda translated Bible was produced in 1936, whereas the new version was published in 1998. The translation of the new version of the Tshivenda Bible is based upon the new English version. However, some of the Tshivenda translation equivalents do not reflect the same meaning as those of the source language. There are many factors behind the non-equivalence of the English and Tshivencla lexical items, for example, culture and linguistic systems. The Bible contains "culture-bound" items, which present specific challenges to translation. Therefore, context becomes important in determining the meaning of the words. The aim of this paper is to highlight translation strategies used in the translation of The Lord's Prayer from the new English version of the Bible titled GoodNews Bible: Today's English Version With Deutorocanonicals/Apocrypha (1996) into Tshivenda, and the effects they have in transferring the meaning of aspects of the prayer.展开更多

As a repairing method of the corroded steel member, a method in which carbon fiber sheets is bonded to the steel member with glue has been studied. In recent years, as more efficient repairing method using FRP materials, the strand sheet bonding which has high mass per unit area has been developed. The purpose of this study is to propose the repairing method for corroded steel member by using the strand sheets. In order to confirm a reinforcing effect, the tensile and flexural tests using steel plates and girders reinforced with strand sheets were performed. Test results showed effectiveness of strand sheets for the reinforcement of the steel members.展开更多
Today, Central Asia continues to face many political, socio-economic and cultural changes brought about by the end of one ruling ideology, particularly in the field of education. With the loss of Soviet ideology that ...Today, Central Asia continues to face many political, socio-economic and cultural changes brought about by the end of one ruling ideology, particularly in the field of education. With the loss of Soviet ideology that formed the basis of the curriculum and educational standards, transition and instability threatened to supplant one ideology for another, in the form of newly developed myths of nationalism on one end of the spectrum and fundamentalism or anti-globalism on the other. Thus, the task of educators working through this period of transition has been both arduous and complex. Humanities education of AKHP of UCA (Aga Khan Humanities Project of University of Central Asia) provides a key channel for training students and educators in independent critical thinking, tolerance of pluralism, and appreciation for the importance of diversity in Central Asian post-Soviet societies, playing a pivotal role in the promotion of these values. This paper argues that cultivating knowledge in the humanities can prevent development of extreme ideologies such as nationalism, fundamentalism and anti-globalization in the region following independence. The positive impacts of implementation of AKHP and its liberating role in the life of the Central Asian students show that development and adoption of an integrated interdisciplinary curriculum that incorporates cross-cultural and comparative studies can serve as a catalyst for reform of the broader education system and the region at large.展开更多

In the present study, we chose 3,970 short sequences of video clips from 35 Chinese teledramas which vividly described the Chinese people's life in the contemporary times. Taking the two variables of power and distance as reference points, nine situations were designed in this study. Our observational results clearly indicate that even slow speed CMEs are capable to produce the cosmic ray and geomagnetic disturbances on day to day basis. The depression in cosmic ray intensity is larger three days after the arrival of the CMEs along with the maximum disturbance in geomagnetic activity on the same day (i.e., after three days from the arrival of CMEs). Fluctuations in cosmic ray intensity and the geomagnetic activity are also observed before the arrival of the CMEs.展开更多

One thus expects the configurat...As a key on-disk proxy of coronal mass ejection (CME), bipolar double dimmings (BDDs) during eruption of filament or coronal sigmoid are explained to mark footpoints of a flux rope. One thus expects the configuration of BDDs to be linked with chirality of associated filament or sigmoid. In the paper, we investigate four events in association with BDDs and halo or partial halo CMEs. In each hemisphere, two neutral lines (NLs) underlying eruptive filament or sigmoid are presented, in which one obeys and another disobeys the well-known hemispheric chirality rule. Between two possible configurations of BDDs for an eruptive NL, we find that only one, depending on the chirality of the NL, can occur. By considering axial orientation of BDDs as from the positive dimming to the negative one, and by defining "dextral/sinistral BDDS" as the axial orientation having rightward/leftward component parallel to the NL to an observer at its positive-polarity side, eruptive dextral/sinistral NLs have no-exception correlation with dextral/sinistral BDDs. It is also found that dextral/sinistral BDDs can invariably undergo clockwise/counterclockwise rotation. These observations suggest that configurations and rotations of BDDs also have chirality patterns that are consistent with that of the associated filaments, sigmoids, and their environments.展开更多

In this work we present the first inelastic ultraviolet scattering data of such an electrohydrodynamic bridge revealing radial gradients of Stokes- and Anti-Stokes shifts and their intensity profiles. Interpretations including density and temperature changes within the bridge are discussed. The obtained data can be satisfactorily explained by the introduction of a second phase consisting of nano bubbles. Results and interpretation are discussed in relation to similar phenomena.展开更多

The main scientific objective has been to evaluate the vertical structure of the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) in urban sites of Medellin-Colombia, South America, (Longitude 75°34′05″ West, Latitude 6°13′55″ North), using suspended aerosols as tracers of the atmospheric motion. This paper reports the design, manufactures and performance of an elastic lidar system, which was operated under varying air pollution and meteorological conditions and the observations presented here were performed in early 2010, over the metropolitan area of Medellin, city included in the Andean region of Colombia.展开更多

In this work we present the first inelastic ultraviolet scattering data of such an electrohydrodynamic bridge revealing radial gradients of Stokes- and Anti-Stokes shifts and their intensity profiles. Interpretations including density and temperature changes within the bridge are discussed. The obtained data can be satisfactorily explained by the introduction of a second phase consisting of nano bubbles. Results and interpretation are discussed in relation to similar phenomena.
文摘In the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Sede Medellin, the Lasers and Spectroscopy Group (GLEO) has been designed and manufactured a tropospheric lidar station based on a pulsed Nd:YAG laser operating at 532-nm wavelength. The main scientific objective has been to evaluate the vertical structure of the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) in urban sites of Medellin-Colombia, South America, (Longitude 75°34′05″ West, Latitude 6°13′55″ North), using suspended aerosols as tracers of the atmospheric motion. This paper reports the design, manufactures and performance of an elastic lidar system, which was operated under varying air pollution and meteorological conditions and the observations presented here were performed in early 2010, over the metropolitan area of Medellin, city included in the Andean region of Colombia.
