Analyzing the earthquakes of magnitude≥7.0 which occurred in the Hualian area of Taiwan within the 20th century, the authors discovered that the occurrences of the earthquakes are commensurable. The earthquakes of magnitude 7.6 which occurred in Hualian of Taiwan, on September 20th, 1999 and of magnitude 7.5 which occurred 70 km away from Hualian, on March 31th, 2002 appeared at the commensurable point of K=2 and the period times the golden section, respectively. An extended discussion is carried out on the method of commensurability and its implied physical significance, especially on the contribution of the commensurable periodic extension made by Prof. Weng Wenbo.展开更多

The ECFA is a landmark bilateral trade agreement that can make Taiwan a new gateway to China's Mainland. However, the Taiwan Residents petrochemical industry would be very disappointed with the early harvest list as it excluded some critical export items. The purpose of this paper is to amend the understanding of the possible impact on petrochemical market after ECFA is enacted. The authors examine the cumulative daily response of stock prices to five announcements about the ECFA and evaluate the existence of the abnormal return. The authors use daily data from January 2010 to February 2011 to employ an event study approach. The empirical results suggest that the three ECFA announcement dates, as well as the signing date, show significantly negative abnormal return due to the prior positive cumulative response of Taiwan chemicals listed stock prices. This paper can provide the petrochemical industry manufacturer, owners, and investors with further insights into how chemicals stock returns react to a big event like ECFA.展开更多

Financial and marketing section chiefs or employees of higher levels at Taiwan listed biotechnology companies were interviewed, with the companies' ROE (return on equity) data obtained from the Taiwan Economic Journal (TEJ) database. While convenience sampling was used to yield knowledge from the population, the linear Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was adopted to verify the goodness-of-fit effects among the overall model, structural model, and measurement model. Findings from this study show that, at Taiwan listed biotechnology companies, IC accumulation and increased brand equity have significantly interactive influences on organizational performance.展开更多

In this study, the inferences of voluntary earnings forecast are examined based on forecasts issued by listed firms. This study suspects that insiders have a temptation to strategically manipulate financial forecast information to influence markets and thus receive extra rents. Under the new earnings forecast disclosure policy, the number of disclosing firm decreases but the precision of earnings forecast increases. The empirical result from dynamic panel data evidences the forecast error of voluntary disclosure may negatively impact firm values. Furthermore, there is a positive relationship between insiders' trading profit and manipulation of earnings forecasts. As volatility in insider manipulation increases, it is difficult for the investors to predict the real intention of insiders, and insiders may achieve greater benefits from trading. This study also observes that many listed companies hold investor conferences to provide earnings guidance in Taiwan. The reason may be that investor conference is more flexible and has less forecast error cost than the formal financial forecast. This study provides important insights into earnings forecast policy in emerging markets. The competent authority should improve corporate governance and develop monitoring functions to abate forecast manipulation.展开更多

Because Taiwan Residents textile companies suffer water pollution events, this study verifies the market reactions to the two announcements of water pollution events from 2014 to 2015. The two events are as follows: first, Greenpeace International enabled 38 scientists to announce the ban on fluoride in Madrid; second, Greenpeace International has detected fluoride residues from the water in remote mountainous areas of Europe and concluded that Taiwan Residents jerseys composed of fluoride pollute the rivers or snows. The findings of the research indicate that the announcement of the ban on fluoride induces negative abnormal returns because fluoride is the main materials for Taiwan Residents jerseys. Most importantly, the announcement of the water pollution in Europe from Taiwan Residents manufactured jerseys induces negative abnormal returns. Both of the two events enable the stock investors scared about the decrease of future profit and market share for Taiwan Residents textile corporations. Consequently, investors sell the stocks of these corporations, inducing the negative abnormal returns during the announcement of water pollution of Taiwan Residents jerseys. Water polluted issues are critical of firm values.展开更多

As the insurance industry undergoes this period of technology transformation, it is important to recognize the key role that big data play in the industry. Most critically, the industry could not function without the utilization of big data, which explains to a large extent why every insurance company maintains its own numeric database. Relatedly, Taiwan's Bureau of National Health Insurance recently established the Information Integration Application Service Center, to which qualified companies and institutions can submit applications for permission to analyze the bureau's collected disease data according to stipulated regulations. In effect, access to the center's data provides insurance companies with a further means of improving their operational effectiveness through the analysis of big data, with targets for potential improvements including the various strategies utilized to react to changes in the environment, such as those involved in marketing, administrative management, and product pricing and services. The foundation of the present study consisted of a literature review and survey, with the key objective being to determine and discuss the effects of big data analysis on the medical insurance industry, including the changes that the utilization of big data results in for the customers of medical insurance companies. With the issues discussed above in mind, the survey was designed to determine whether medical insurance consumers know about and understand the effects of big data. The survey data indicated the following key findings: (1) The two concepts exhibit clear differences in terms of population statistic wxiables; (2) The two concepts exhibit clear differences in terms of insurance purchasing variables; and (3) The two concepts exhibit clear differences in terms of the level of understanding regarding big data.展开更多

Data were gathered and analyzed using a conceptual framework that consisted of a multicultural citizenship based on the liberal theoretical perspective. The results indicate that indigenous educators face dilemmas in being cultural elites while considered national education policy implementer. Findings illustrate that indigenous elementary school educators are expected to possess differentiated-group privileges in teaching practices; however, they are confronted with both internal restrictions and external protections during establishing of ethnic cultural identity while playing their roles in the national educational apparatus. The paper also gives conclusions and suggestions for future researches.展开更多
