Life cycle assessment in the environmental impact evaluation of urbandevelopment--a case study of land readjustment project,Hyogo District, Japan

In this paper, the Life Cycle of Urban Development was firstly analyzed, and the phases of Life Cycle Assessment applied to Urban Development (ULCA) were described. As a case study, ULCA was applied in the environmental impact assessment of the land readjustment project of Hyogo District of Saga, Japan. In addition, mitigation proposals for reducing CO2 were also presented and the relevant environmental ef-fects were simulated.

Thales of Miletus, Archimedes and the Solar Eclipses on the Antikythera Mechanism

Thales of Miletus （640？-546 BC） is famous for his prediction of the total solar eclipse in 585 BC. In this paper, the author demonstrate how Thales may have used the same principle for prediction of solar eclipses as that used on the Antikythera Mechanism. At the SEAC conference in Alexandria in 2009, the author presented the paper ＂Ten solar eclipses show that the Antikythera Mechanism was constructed for use on Sicily.＂ The best defined series of exeligmos cycles started in 243 BC during the lifetime of Archimedes （287-212 BC） from Syracuse. The inscriptions on the Antikythera Mechanism were made in 100-150 BC and the last useful exeligmos started in 134 BC. The theory for the motion of the moon was from Hipparchus （ca 190-125 BC）. A more complete investigation of the solar eclipses on the Antikythera Mechanism reveals that the first month in the first saros cycle started with the first new moon after the winter solstice in 542 BC. Four solar eclipses 537-528 BC, from the first saros cycle, and three one exeligmos cycle later, 487-478 BC, are preserved and may have been recorded in Croton by Pythagoras （ca 575-495 BC） and his school.

Does Working Capital Cause Profitability？ --The Nigerian Experience

The paper investigates the long run relationship and causality issues between working capital and profitability in 66 firms in Nigeria by using the panel cointegration method for the period 1999-2007. The empirical results show that there is long run steady-state relationship between working capital and profitability. However, the short run causal relationship runs from working capital to profitability suggesting that inefficient working capital management may harm profitability.

Diurnal Variation of Tropical Cyclone Rainfall in the Western North Pacific in 2008-2010

Diurnal variation of tropical cyclone （TC rainfall in the western North Pacific （WNP） is investi gated using the high-resolution Climate Prediction Ce~ ter＇s morphing technique （CMORPH） products obtaine from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administra tion （NOAA）. From January 2008 to October 2010, 7 TCs and 389 TC rainfall days were reported by the Joir Typhoon Warning Center＇s （JTWC） best-track record. Th TC rain rate was partitioned using the Objective Synopti Analysis Technique （OSAT） and interpolated into Local Standard Time （LST）. Harmonic analysis was applied t analyze the diurnal variation of the precipitation. Obviou diurnal cycles were seen in approximately 70% of the TC rainfall days. The harmonic amplitude and phase of the mean TC rainfall rate vary with TC intensity, life stage, season, and spatial distribution. On the basis of intensity, tropical de- pressions （TDs） exhibit the highest precipitation variation amplitude （PVA）, at approximately 30%, while super ty- phoons （STs） contain the lowest PVA, at less than 22%. On the basis of lifetime stage, the PVA in the decaying stage （more than 37%） is stronger than that in the devel oping （less than 20%） and sustaining （28%） stages. On the basis of location, the PVA of more than 35% （less than 18%） is the highest （lowest） over the high-latitude oceanic areas （the eastern ocean of the Philippine Islands）. In ad dition, a sub-diurnal cycle of TC rainfall occurs over the high-latitude oceans. On the basis of season, the diurnal variation is more pronounced during summer and winter, at approximately 30% and 32%, respectively, and is weaker in spring and autumn, at approximately 22% and 24%, respectively.

Orlicz mixed quermassintegrals Dedicated to Professor Ren De-lin on the Occasion of his 80th Birthday

The notion of mixed quermassintegrals in the classical Brunn-Minkowski theory is extended to that of Orlicz mixed quermassintegrals in the Orlicz Brunn-Minkowski theory. The analogs of the classical Cauchy- Kuhota formula, the Minkowski isoperimetric inequality and the Brunn-Minkowski inequality are established for this new Orlicz mixed quermassintegrals.

Orbit control strategy for Lagrange point orbits based on an analytical method

The periodic or quasi-periodic orbits around collinear Lagrange points present many properties that are advantageous for space missions. These Lagrange point orbits are exponentially unstable. On the basis of an analytical method, an orbit control strategy that is designed to eliminate the dominant unstable components of Lagrange point orbits is developed. The proposed strategy enables the derivation of the analytical expression of nonlinear control force. The control parameter of this strategy can be arbitrarily selected provided that the parameter is considerably lower than the negative eigenvalue of motion equations, and that the energy required keeps the same order of magnitude. The periodic or quasi-periodic orbit of controlled equations remains near the periodic or quasi-periodic orbit of uncontrolled equations.

The convergence of Lax-Oleinik semigroup for time-periodic Lagrangian

In this article,the convergence of so-called Lax-Oleinik semigroup is studied for time-periodic Lagrangian systems when the degree of freedom is greater than 2.Under certain conditions,we show that the Lax-Oleinik semigroup converges if the rotation vector is completely irrational.Removing such conditions,we will give another kind of convergence of the sequence Fc((x,s),(x′,s′+Tn)),the convergence of which is closely related to the Lax-Oleinik semigroup.
