A stepwise optimal design for water network is developed to simplify solution procedures for the formulated MINLP problem. In this paper, a feasible water reuse network framework is generated. Some heuristic rules from water reuse network are used to guide the placement of regeneration process. Then the outlet stream of regeneration process is considered as new water source. Regeneration reuse network structure is obtained through an iterative optimal procedure by taking the insights from reuse water network structure. Furthermore, regeneration recycle is only utilized to eliminate fresh water usage for processes in which regeneration reuse is impossible. Compared with the results obtained by relevant researches for the same example, the present method not only provides an appropriate regeneration reuse water network with minimum fresh water and regenerated water flow rate but also suggests a water network involving regeneration recycle with minimum recycle water flow rate. The design can utilize reuse, regeneration reuse and regeneration recycle step by step with minor water network structure change to achieve better flexibility. It can satisfy different demands for new plants and modernization of existing plants.展开更多

Here we report a simple and practical strategy to synthesize a monolithic single-atom catalyst(SAC) with isolated Pd atoms supported on bulk nitrogen-doped carbon foams(Pd-SAs/CNF). Moreover, we demonstrate that the single-atom Pd sites with unique electronic structure endow Pd-SAs/CNF with an isolated site effect, leading to excellent activity and selectivity in 4-nitrophenylacetylene semi-hydrogenation reaction. In addition, benefiting from the great integrity and excellent mechanical strength, monolithic Pd-SAs/CNF catalyst is easy to separate from the reaction system for conducting the subsequent recycling. The cyclic test demonstrates the excellent reusability and stability of monolithic Pd-SAs/CNF catalyst. The discovery of isolated site effect provides a new approach to design highly selective catalysts. And the development of monolithic SACs provides new opportunities to advance the practical applications of single-atom catalysts.展开更多

The latter is widely discussed as a consequence of improved physical quality of the amended soil. However, the mechanisms for this improvement are still poorly understood. This study investigated the effect of woodchip biochar amendment on micro-structural development, micro-and macro-structural stability, and resilience of two differently textured soils, fine sand(FS) and sandy loam(SL). Test substrates were prepared by adding 50 or 100 g kg^(-1) biochar to FS or SL. Total porosity and plant available water were significantly increased in both soils. Moreover, compressive strength of the aggregates was significantly decreased when biochar amount was doubled. Mechanical resilience of the aggregates at both micro-and macro-scale was improved in the biochar-amended soils, impacting the cohesion and compressive behavior. A combination of these effects will result in an improved pore structure and aeration. Consequently, the physicochemical environment for plants and microbes is improved. Furthermore, the improved stability properties will result in better capacity of the biochar-amended soil to recover from the myriad of mechanical stresses imposed under arable systems, including vehicle traffic, to the weight of overburden soil. However, it was noted that doubling the amendment rate did not in any case offer any remarkable additional improvement in these properties, suggesting a further need to investigate the optimal amendment rate.展开更多
