In spite of these requirements, as of December 31, 2007, there are approximately 421 non-U.S, companies valued at $11.4 trillion listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Of these 421 companies, 41 companies are from China. This study examines the reasons for Chinese companies choosing to list on the New York Stock Exchange and their experiences with incremental disclosure and listing requirements on the Shanghai, Hong Kong, London, and New York stock exchanges. The lesson for foreign companies everywhere should be that foreign companies should search for those cross listings adding value and not be searching for countries and stock exchanges with weak disclosure and listing requirements.展开更多

However, little is done to design this surface to benefit the public sphere. Instead, the facade of a building performs either as a component that focuses only on the quality of comfort for interior occupants, while ignoring effects on the exterior of the building, or as an identifiable aesthetic for the building's owners, This essay proposes the rethinking of the building facade as a steward of outdoor pedestrian welfare, and the conception of public health as an added function of the building envelope- a concept that may fall into the jurisdiction of public works. If the huge total surface area of a city's buildings is thought of as part of the city's infrastructure, then its public contribution may not only make outdoor areas comfortable, clean, and enjoyable, but also help to alleviate the bigger problem of rising temperatures in cities.展开更多

As compared to the foreign companies, domestic companies in India are relatively more concerned for reinvesting their profits and help to trigger the capital accumulation and industrial growth. This practice of comparatively paying higher dividend by foreign companies in India, if proved, supports the view that foreign companies are least concerned with the industrial growth of the country in which they operate. Hence the analyses of the dividend payments and the retained earnings of foreign and domestic firms assume economic importance. Considering the above hypothesis and the importance of the study, this paper made an attempt to empirically test the opinion and bring out any significant differences in the profitability and dividend payments between the two groups often pharmaceutical companies operating in India for the period of last 20 years.展开更多

Firstly, investors appeared in the press sector, later on in the electronic media. One of the first groups presented in Poland was Orkla Media. The Norwegians launched a brand new regional daily. After subsequent failure they changed the pattern of business activity. When in 2006 Mecom bought out Orkla's shares, a new era began. The British fund was mainly interested in making their assets more profitable. The biggest shareholder of the regional press sector, however, is still Verlagsgruppe Passau (VGP). The German group appeared in 1993, in disguise of a Swiss company and next year took over eight regional dailies. In due course, VGP bought out a couple of more regional titles and became the leader of this sector of the market. Although the Germans were competing against the Norwegians and the Brits, they showed a different style of managing their assets. The author attempts to describe different patterns of business strategy in the press sector in Poland, examining each investor's behavior and the results of their efforts. This can lead to conclusions about the past activities as well as to predictions about the future of the market.展开更多

A foreign firm has a patent on a technological innovation that reduces the costs of all firms. The foreign firm can license the innovation to one or both domestic firms. The authors consider two standard licensing policies: (1) auction policy and (2) unit royalty policy. The foreign firm can license the innovation either by staying outside the domestic market, or it can enter the market, license the innovation and compete with the domestic firms. The authors show that (1) when the foreign firm stays outside, it is never optimal for it to use royalties, (2) if it licenses the innovation by entering the industry, then royalties could be optimal and (3) when it decides on its entry strategy by taking its optimal licensing policies into account, it always finds it optimal to enter the domestic market.展开更多

In the early 1990s the press sector was re-established as a consequence of de-monopolization and has been taken over by foreigners. The complexity of Polish media system reflects the long way from communism and governmental media towards free democratized market with some remnants of the previous era. We are witnessing a regional disparity regarding the volume of foreign investments in this area, which is due to the difference of attractiveness of host countries economy. The attractiveness of these economies is conditioned, in its turn, by the importance of economic factors and the quality of existing infrastructures, which is at their turn facing an increasing complexity of technology. Business relocation of foreign investors is influenced also by the institutional environment, because foreign investors hope to capitalize on the collateral effects offered by the investment environment in the host country, such as research laboratories and existing infrastructure, without neglecting the benefits of a highly qualified workforce at reduced costs, some geopolitical advantages, etc.. After EU accession, the attractiveness index of business environment in Romania has increased from (-59%) in 2005 to 66% (2008), and Romania was considered among the most attractive economies in Central and Eastern Europe, along with Russia where the attractiveness index increased from 63% (2007) to 72% (2008) and Ukraine which has seen an increase in the attractiveness index of the business environment from 56% (2007) to 67% (2008). This paper aims to highlight the positive effects induced by international business companies in assessing technological absorption capacity of the Romanian economy and to provide economic analysis of the "cause-effect" link between the attractiveness of the Romanian economy-governance--the intake of foreign investment straight to the active processing export of Romania under the impact of the overall effects of international financial crisis.展开更多

There is an urgent need to discover and develop new alternative agents for the management of HSV-1 infection. Tripterygium hypoglaucum (level) Hutch (Celastraceae) is a traditional Chinese medicine plant with many pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammation, anti-tumor and antifertility. The usual medicinal part is the roots which contain about a 1% yield of alkaloids. A crude total alkaloids extract was prepared from the roots of T. hypoglaucum amd its antiviral activity against HSV-1 in Vero cells was evaluated by cytopathic effect (CPE) assay, plaque reduction assay and by RT-PCR analysis. The alkaloids extract presented low cytotoxicity (CC50 = 46.6μg/mL) and potent CPE inhibition activity, the 50% inhibitory concentration (ICs0) was 6.5 μg/mL, noticeably lower than that of Acyclovir (15.4μg /mL). Plaque formation was significantly reduced by the alkaloids extract at concentrations of 6.25 μg/mL to 12.5 μg/mL, the plaque reduction ratio reached 55% to 75% which was 35% higher than that of Acyclovir at the same concentration. RT-PCR analysis showed that, the transcription of two important delayed early genes UL30 and UL39, and a late gene US6 of HSV-1 genome all were suppressed by the alkaloids extract, the expression inhibiting efficacy compared to the control was 74.6% (UL30), 70.9% (UL39) and 62.6% (US6) respectively at the working concentration of 12.5μg/mL. The above results suggest a potent anti-HSV-1 activity of the alkaloids extract in vitro.展开更多

After the first opium war, China was forced to open the gate of the old oriental country to the world. As more treaty ports opened, the import and export of goods increased the growing trade that brought about the increased demands of shipping transportation. In the same period, British, France, America, Germany and Japan governing bodies instated various kinds of laws, regulations and other policies encouraging their national shipping companies to grab shipping market share. As a result, foreign steamship companies monopolized Chinese shipping market quickly. Faced with this situation, in 1872, the China Merchants' Steam Navigation Company was the fisst steamship company of China to be formed. It was a government-supervised and merchant-managed company, and the Qing Dynasty government took a series of measures to support it under the fierce competition, these measures were different from foreign countries'.展开更多
