During one semester, we conducted polls, class observations, and interviews with teachers. The data collected contain information about the strategies that teachers use to guide, clarify, and evaluate the readings they assigned. It also informs about the ways in which teachers classify texts and participate in the process of composing, editing, and evaluating the students' writing. Finally, the data inform about the role that teachers assign to the practices of reading and writing in their courses. The results of the study prove that there is a misconception based on the idea that there is a unique way of understanding and practicing reading and writing in the academia, and that there is a set of unique strategies that are transferable to any discipline or field of study. The cases analyzed in this study suggest that it would be much more effective to incorporate intensive reading and writing strategies in disciplinary courses, than to concentrate on first year writing courses.展开更多

Both teachers and learners have tried hard to find a good and effective way to teach and learn English in order to achieve high proficiency of English. Recitation, the traditional Chinese teaching method has been well kept in teaching language, particularly in primary school. In this paper, the writer reviews the related language learning theories and the studies of recitation and attempts to explore the positive effect of recitation, which is based on the theory of "input hypothesis" and accords with the cognitive process of human mind. Through experiment, it is found that recitation is helpful to students' writing.展开更多

It is found that students are able to make judgments about the overall quality of their writing in a manner consistent with those made by the teacher and students made significant improvements in content, organization, and mechanics of their writing after the practice of self-assessment while qualities concerning vocabulary and language use have been improved but not to a significant level. Moreover, the study demonstrates that the practice of self-assessment has exerted positive influence on students' perceptions of their writing skills in terms of organization, language use and mechanics while it does not result in any change of students' perceptions of their writing skills in content and vocabulary. These implications are conductive to working out a set of new models of the teaching of writing and helping further intensify the innovations of Chinese foreign language teaching.展开更多

Argumentative writing and acknowledging the counterargument is one of modes that is introduced in freshman classes; however, college students approach writing with a certain mindset. Learning to write in different modes could be exciting when taught utilizing a film or a documentary. Using a documentary, such as Devil's Playground, writing professors not only initiate interest in culture learning and cultural understanding but also motivate students to use argumentation to foster critical thinking as well as cultural understanding.展开更多

At last, the author suggests some ways of how to put the reforming into reality,展开更多
