The traditional assessment system over emphasizes the summative assessment, which used examinations as the main assessment method. Formative assessment focuses on the process assessment during the practice of teaching. It is integrated in the teaching and learning process and cannot be separated as evaluation. The formative assessment aims to confirm the students' potential, develop their ability in study and strengthen the students' confidence and the spirit of cooperation. It is also a method intended to generate feedback on performance to improve and accelerate teaching and learning effectively. Based on some theories, this paper states the importance of the application of formative assessment in college oral English teaching. It also introduces some principles and measures to apply this assessment. The reasonable and effective application can promote college oral English teaching. 展开更多

Intention and automaticity toward physical and sedentary screen-based leisure activities in adolescents:A profile perspective 被引量:1

Purpose: Physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) are increasingly considered independent health behaviors. Additionally, current research suggests that both controlled and automatic determinants account for their adoption. The purpose of this article was to identify intention-automaticity profiles toward PA and screen-based SB and to examine how those profiles are associated with different behavioral patterns. Method: Two cross-sectional studies based on self-report questionnaires were conducted with French high school students (Study 1: n = 198; Study 2: n = 185). Results: In all, 4 distinct motivational profiles appeared. The first 3 clusters emerged in both studies: "PA" (high levels of automaticity and intention for PA, low levels of automaticity and intention for screen-based SB); "screen" (high levels of automaticity and intention for screen-based SB, low levels of automatieity and intention for PA), and "mixed" (high levels of all variables), whereas the fourth cluster was observed only in Study 2: "high control" (below-mean levels of automaticity, high levels of intention toward both PA and screen-based SB). Adolescents with a screen profile displayed the least healthy behavioral pattern, whereas those in the PA profile demonstrated the most favorable behaviors. Conclusion: Future research is needed to extend these results to other populations using complementary assessment methods of automatic psychological processes and PA and SB behaviors.2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.on behalf of Shanghai University of Sport. A number of studies show that bilingual education in private universities is worth studying in recent years, but its feasibility causes many debates at the same time which students are not as superior in both English proficiency and expertise as what we have expect- ed.However, it is undeniable that teaching process of teachers becomes significant influence on students' learning results. In my research I focus on the comprehensive view and procedures of teaching and set up the index system for evaluation of bilingual teaching process from teachers' perspective. In addition, I calculate the weighted value of each index at each level by using the root method, and determine the key success factors which affecting the quality of bilingual teaching process. Lastly, taking Oxbridge college as an example, I try to study what types of factors that constitutes conditions and limitations for a successful effect for bilingual teaching and to propose the solutions for improving and self-supervising in bilingual teaching process. 展开更多

To investigate the impact of dynamic assessment(DA)on the development of speaking skills,a case study was conducted,recruiting a non-English major undergraduate.DA was constructed following the design combining sandwich and cake format with an interactionist approach.To collect data,a profile was designed in accordance with the China’s Standards of English Language Ability(CSE)to record the learner’s changes.A semi-structured interview was conducted to reveal his perspectives on DA.The generated profile with specific mediator-learner’s moves revealed the learner’s microgenetic development in both organizational knowledge and oral expression strategy ability.The thematic analysis of the interview demonstrated the learner’s positive experience with DA,while also unveiling the weak points of DA.Finally,the operational framework for applying interactionist DA in the oral classroom was discussed,and the complementary relationship between DA and traditional teaching and testing practices was highlighted. 展开更多

The research performance of top universities in China is revealed in this study and analyzed using the essential science indicators(ESI) database.Different types of bibliometric indicators are applied in this study,including publication output and impact indicators.This study finds that the academic performance of universities in China is advancing rapidly,with many universities coming out near the top of the rankings,especially in terms of quantity of papers.The quantitative performance of universities in China is remarkable.The research results show that there is a considerable gap between quality and quantity of research output at the top universities of China,with research influence concentrated on some specific fields for selected universities.Engineering,Chemistry and Material Science are the fields with relatively outstanding performance in the top universities. 展开更多

Teaching experience accumulation and reflection could bring a more systematic and comprehensive evaluation of teaching and internship can enhance internship students' awareness of the importance of internship, and make good sorting in internship effectively. Self-reflection and conclusion are conducive to exchange of internship experience, promotion of learning ability and cultivation of a good learning attitude of life-long learning. To get more insight into using self-assessment in writing instruction, the present study intends to explore the effects of student self-assessment on students' EFL writing by adopting writing assignments, analytic scoring rubric, questionnaires and interviews. It is found that students are able to make judgments about the overall quality of their writing in a manner consistent with those made by the teacher and students made significant improvements in content, organization, and mechanics of their writing after the practice of self-assessment while qualities concerning vocabulary and language use have been improved but not to a significant level. Moreover, the study demonstrates that the practice of self-assessment has exerted positive influence on students' perceptions of their writing skills in terms of organization, language use and mechanics while it does not result in any change of students' perceptions of their writing skills in content and vocabulary. These implications are conductive to working out a set of new models of the teaching of writing and helping further intensify the innovations of Chinese foreign language teaching. 展开更多

This study emphasizes the connection between theory and practice in research frame. It is intended by this research using content analysis of UI GreenMetric, universities' websites and sustainability annual reports observing universities' practices related to sustainability to answer the research question, which is: How are university managements embedding sustainability-oriented practices in sustainability focused European universities as far as CORE system (Curriculum, Operations, Research, and Engagement) is considered? The employed research methodology mainly relies on content analysis of the studied universities from the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University assessment and ranking index. The UI GreenMetric Sustainable University assessment and ranking index was selected since it considers the Operations, Curriculum, Research, and Engagements (CORE system) of universities with indicators such as Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, and Education. This covers the triple bottom line of sustainability (Environment, Economy, and Society) and other indexes like GASU, AASHE, STARS and others, focused mostly on operational Eco-efficiency. UI GreenMetric index is the first and the only ranking that measures each participating university's commitment in developing an "environmentally friendly" infrastructure. The total sample of the study observed and evaluated in this study are five (5) top European Sustainable Universities according to UI GreenMetric sustainable ranking index. The result shows a significant progress in Operational practices except in the area of Campus Setting and Infrastructure. There was a less significant progress in the Curriculum, Research, and Engagement practices of the CORE system of sustainability-oriented practices which are being integrated into the studied universities. This research provides a state of the art result regarding the embeddedness of sustainable practice in European universities. It has the potential to help any university to better integrate sustainability in their management system. 展开更多

The purpose of this paper is to describe and demonstrate the validity of a methodology to distinguish, in the performances of high education institutions (HEIs), real from perceived performances. The extension of accountability to the evaluation of educational programs involves significant topics concerning the gap between perceived and real performances. It means that, since many actors such as teachers, students, and external stakeholders are involved in the process, the research on methodologies to distinguish subjective from objective parameters is still on the floor. Debate about performance evaluation in this collaboration is still in progress particularly as it concerns the proposal of several parameters and indexes to quantify the topic and reduce the subjectivism in the assessment and the gap between real and perceived performances. After describing and discussing an evaluation model based on three interdependent typologies of indexes, this will be tested in two Tempus projects having the purpose of activating Ph.D. and masters courses. The results encourage deepening researches in this direction and disseminating this methodology and extending and enriching the validation process. 展开更多

Virtual classrooms, especially with learners sharing in academic workload on portals such as Google Docs, have arrived as a natural development of the ICT (In Circuit Tester) wave. In addition to offering ample scope for peer interaction, Blackboard Collaborate gives learners the electronic environment they are most familiar with and keeps them updated with the latest educational tools. However, for it to succeed, the perception of the teachers is a factor that needs close scrutiny before this tool can be incorporated into the system. This paper deals with the post-occupancy performance evaluation of the SFL (School of Foreign Languages) that was designed by the authors and is located within the YTU (Yildiz Technical University) Davutpaa campus in Istanbul. After the completion and occupation of the building, project review came into question and a POE was performed. Post-occupancy performance evaluation tries to answer the questions of space provision for social interaction: "How is this building working?" "Is it intended?" "How can it be improved?" and "How can future buildings be improved?" Answers to these vital questions are searched under four main sections. In the first section, the study discusses the physical location and functional properties of the building, in the second, the design decisions of the building are discussed in the context of and design principles, in the third, the method of performance evaluation is explained, and in the final section, the results are analyzed and discussed. Evaluation of a PV Powered EV Charging Station and Its Buffer Battery

This research analyses the operation of a solar PV powered electric vehicle charging station with energy storage, that has been developed and demonstrated at the University of California--Davis, West Village, the largest planned zero-energy consumption community in the U.S. The intelligent energy management approach introduces solar PV electrical energy forecasting and EV (electric vehicle) charging demand projection to optimize the SOC (state of charge) of the buffer battery. The charging station has been operated continuously and routinely used by several EV users for a year. The actual operation shows that, a workplace charging station equipped with a buffer battery and with intelligent energy management can lower and reduce the station's peak power demand, and reduce the energy exchange with the utility grid by a factor of 2. The battery recharging power demand was shifted away from the on-peak time periods to the off-peak time periods, which will benefit the charging station owner from less energy use during peak periods when time-of-use rates are higher. The standard cell voltage deviation of the 220 cells was calculated to analyse the battery cell consistency during the resting, charging and discharging periods. The analysis shows that, the 220 50Ah cells show excellent voltage consistency with voltage deviation of less than 0.005 V within the battery SOC of 20%-80%. The voltage deviation doubles when the battery SOC reaches 90%. The comparison of cell voltage deviation at the beginning and after one year operation indicates that, the battery shows perfect cell voltage consistency and there is no obvious consistency deterioration during the battery resting, charging and discharging periods. 展开更多

The purpose of this project is to reach more students in food, agricultural, and environmental sciences with a globalized undergraduate curriculum, by providing contextually-rich reusable learning objects (RLOs) and authentic case studies that address multidisciplinary issues. Reusable learning objects (RLOs) are self--contained, digital learning activities that range in length from 2 to 15 minutes. RLOs can contain a wide array of media, including text, web sites, charts, maps, models, PowerPoint presentations, photos, case studies, simulations, video clips, audio clips, and assessments, Food and agricultural sciences faculty at the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, and Texas A&M University have been selected to be part of a Faculty Learning Community that Will work together in curriculum and RLO development, and will participate in an international study experience funded by this project. For each experience, a group of approximately ten faculty and three project team members will spend roughly two weeks in a Latin American/Caribbean basin country. Various social science data collection processes and evaluation strategies will be the focus of the presentation. The use of preflective and reflective instruments to measure initial attitudes or beliefs about the context-rich multidisciplinary experience and expected gains from participating in the curricula development will be demonstrated. 展开更多
