Quality Issues in the Expansion of University Education in Kenya, the Human Resource Challenges and Opportunities

This paper gives an analysis of the quality issues in the expansion of university education in Kenya examining the human resource challenges and opportunities. It examines a variety of factors that impact the nature, content, and mode of delivery of the teaching. The paper is an introduction and highlights the importance of higher education to societal development. It observes that higher education enables individuals to develop their capabilities to the highest potential, serves the needs of an adaptive, sustainable and knowledge based economy and plays a major role in shaping a democratic, civilized and inclusive society. It is thus seen as the key to progress in the 21 st century. It examines government policy with respect to education in general and higher education in particular. It is noted that the government recognizes the important role that education plays to foster national development and has therefore through various policy instruments sought to ensure that access, relevance, and quality become the major areas of the development of higher education in the country. The management of the universities in the country has faced serious human resource challenges. These challenges arise from the fact that the rapid expansion of university education in the country has not been accompanied with provision of resources in order to maintain high standards, quality, and relevance. This in turn has negatively affected the quality and relevance of the programmes. It is recommended that in order to enhance the quality of teaching, research, and service delivery.

Some parameters of coal methane system that cause very slow release of methane from virgin coal beds(CBM)

In some worldwide hard coal basins recovery of methane from virgin coal beds is difficult. In general,mentioned difficulties are related to geo-mechanical, petrographical and physical-chemical properties of coals in question, occurring for example in the Bowen Basin(Australia) or the Upper Silesian Coal Basin(Poland). Among numerous properties and parameters, the following are very essential: susceptibility of coal beds to deformation connected with coal stress state change and contemporary shrinkage of the coal matrix during methane desorption. Those adverse geo-mechanical and physical-chemical effects are accompanied by essential change of the porous coal structure, which under these disadvantageous conditions is very complex. This study aims to show difficulties, which occur in phase of recognition of the methane-reach coal deposit. Volume absorbed methane(not surface adsorbed) in sub-micropores having minimal size comparable with gas molecule diameter must possess energy allowing separation of the nodes and methane release to micropores.

Diagnosing Student Learning Problems in Object Oriented Programming

Students often face difficulties while taking basic programming courses due to several factors. In response, research has presented subjective assessments for diagnosing learning problems to improve the teaching of programming in higher education. In this paper, the authors propose an Object Oriented conceptual map model and organize this approach into three levels： constructing a Concept Effect Propagation Table, constructing Test Item-Concept Relationships and diagnosing Student Learning Problems with Matrix Composition. The authors＇ work is a modification of the approaches of Chert and Bai as well as Chu et al., as the authors use statistical methods, rather than fuzzy sets, for the authors＇ analysis. This paper includes a statistical summary, which has been tested on a small sample of students in King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, illustrating the learning problems in an Object Oriented course. The experimental results have demonstrated that this approach might aid learning and teaching in an effective way.

A Study on Socratic Questioning Technique Based on Teachers＇ Narrative Research

Interaction is an important standard to detect teachers＇ teaching quality and effect in college English classroom teaching and is the most eagerly expected by all English teachers. During the process of classroom teaching, bad interaction or failure of interaction often makes teachers frustrated. One of the major reasons is that they ask improper questions in class. The purpose of this paper focuses on the skills of raising effective questions by teachers in order to produce good interaction from students. The method to achieve this purpose is by introducing Socratic Questioning method, which is showed by teachers＇ narrative research based on the author＇s own real classroom teaching with detailed explanation. The result of the experiment shows that Socratic Questioning method is not only a good example of effective questioning but also produces sufficient interaction between teacher-to-students and students-to-students. Generally speaking, this paper expects to have contribution to the effect of interaction so as to help more college English teachers have more excellent classroom teaching.

Berkeley Apartheid： Unfair Housing in a University Town

This essay suggests that in 1962-1963, before Birmingham and the March on Washington, a coalition of Black and White civil rights activists, labor, and religious leaders were in the vanguard of the struggle both on the Pacific Slope and in the nation. Berkeley＇s battle for fair housing represented an important phase of the civil rights struggle on the west coast and in cities where racial segregation was not based on law, but part of a conspiracy, silent but quite effective, among realtors, mortgage lenders, and renters, against Blacks and other minorities. Encouraged by state antidiscrimination legislation, Berkeley activists embarked upon a fair housing campaign based on surveys of the problem, efforts to enact legislation, and direct action. The irrationality of racists who defended their right to discriminate was one of the most singular aspects of the fair housing struggle. Though they lost at the local level, the coalition of new political forces succeeded a few months later at the state level and represented an effective force in liberal politics in the city for years to come. Because of the stiff opposition and the limits of reformers＇ liberal fair housing regulations, however, working class and poor African Americans still faced severe housing problems.

Analysis of College Students＇ life views and life education strategy

Through the method of questionnaire survey, this paper investigate the current status of life views from some college students in Guangdong Province, to get more acquainted with the problems existing in college students of life views, and analyze the reasons, in order to put forward specific, feasible and effective suggestions aimed at the current status of college students at school, and provide strategic thinking for the implementation of life education for college students. Through the implementation of life education strategy, cultivate college students to aware of understanding life, cherish life and love life, and then learn to respect life, care for life, accept life and other people.

An Analysis of the Impact of Language Learning Styles on Learning Strategy Preferences

This study is designed to explore the impact of LLS （Language Learning Styles） on learning strategy preferences through questionnaire and data analysis. The aim of the study is to make an through investigation of Chinese non-English majors＇ learning styles and their learning strategies in English study, and to analyze the impact of learning styles on learning strategy preferences statistically so as to provide empirical evidence in this field, and then present some implications for college English teaching and learning in Chinese context. This study has significance for pedagogy. Teachers should make language learners aware of their own learning styles and strategy preferences and help them select strategies matching their own style preferences in second language learning. It is hoped that this study can benefit language teachers, learners, and researchers to some extent and can spark more teaching research in the future.

A Survey on College English Learning Burnou

Based on burnout theories and published researches in this field, a survey is done on non-majors＇ college English learning burnout through the methods of questionnaire and interview. A considerable degree of burnout is found among freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, regardless of gender, though there are gender differences in different aspects of learning burnout. Insights are drawn from the research data involving such aspects as learner autonomy, teaching style, curriculum design, rapport, modernized facilities, employment awareness, and so on, with an aim to suggest some strategies to overcome learning burnout and improve students＇ language competence. Future research might extend the present study to English majors and attempt a comparison in between.

An Analysis of Conceptions of Learning English Among College Students in China

In the field of second language acquisition, an increasing amount of research has been conducted on learner＇s beliefs. Few empirical studies, however, have been focused on students＇ conceptions of learning English （COLE）. This study aims to assess conceptions of learning particularly in the domain of English. Data were collected through the COLE questionnaire among 284 college students in China. Seven factors of COLE are identified, such as ＂memorizing＂, ＂testing＂, ＂drill and practice＂, ＂increasing knowledge＂, ＂understanding＂, ＂application＂, and ＂seeing in a new way＂. These findings also provide some pedagogical implications for English language instructors and researchers.

Study of the Psychological Problems of College Students

Good psychological quality is an integral part of the overall quality of the contemporary college students, which is also an important foundation for their healthy growth and success. However, according to the investigation, in reality, many college students have various degrees of psychological problems, seriously affecting their normal learning and living. This article makes an in-depth discussion based on the analysis of contemporary college students＇ psychological quality system; in order to strengthen the mental health education and improve the students＇ adaptability.

An Investigation Into Freshmen＇s Autonomous Learning of English Major

Autonomous learning has been attracting more and more attention in the field of second language teaching and learning since it was put forward. In order to get a better understanding about autonomous learning competence of freshmen of English major in university, this investigation was conducted in the form of questionnaire and was analyzed according to the data collected. The investigation found that autonomous learning competence of freshmen is poor and worrying. Freshmen have strong motivation for English learning, but they keep old learning habit and more rely on teachers. They are incapable of employing metacognitive strategies in their language learning and are not good at utilizing related learning resources available to them. All these deficiencies hinder improvement of them. So they are in great need of fostering the competence of automous learning.

Research on College Frustrated Students＇ Network Mentality and Behaviors

Network has not only become a habit and lifestyle for university student, but also brought all sorts of ethical misconducts and ethical issues in society. Based on the analysis of college students＇ frustrations, this paper explores the causes of network behavior anomie for college students, which mainly include： dissatisfaction in real communication, game addiction to the network, craving online pornography, and hooking on online shopping. In addition, it also investigates the ways to wipe out mental frustration in such a cyber era. These ways mainly are to strenzthen online education and management, to make psychological counseling, and to carry on frustration education.

＂All Thanks Goes to the Almighty＂ ——A Variational and Postcolonial Pragmatic Perspective on Responses to Thanks

This study examines strategies in responding to thanks by CanE （Canadian English） and CamE （Cameroon English） speakers. Based on data collected by means of a DCT （Discourse Completion Task） questionnaire, the study addresses formal, functional, situational, and interactional similarities and differences in both varieties of English. With regard to speaker strategies （Aijmer, 1996） or conventions of means, it was found that the Canadian participants mostly prefer ＂minimizing the favor＂ when responding to thanks, while the Cameroonians most frequently ＂express appreciation＂. At the level of the realization types, the findings show that patterns with ＂no problem＂ are predominant in the Canadian corpus, whereas the Cameroonian respondents rather employ patterns with ＂welcome＂. Differences can also be found in the situational distribution of the speaker strategies and their linguistic realizations as well as in the use and the length of supportive moves.

Study on Factors of College Student＇s Network service time Based on Bayesian Networks

Due to the uncertainty of the factors that influence the network service time and other characters of college student, Bayesian Network is used to model this kind of system. Different algorithms are used for learning Bayesian Networks in order to compare several models. It is suggested that researchers can use Bayesian Networks to explore the potential relationship between variables of complex social problems. The result indicates that learning target and family closeness degree are the key variables which influenced college student＇ s network service time. Origin of student and family economy didn＇ t influence college student＇ s network service time directly. Schools and community should strengthen the education of college students life planning and communication with parents.

Examples of the Teaching of the Health Questions of Electric and Magnetic Fields at Tampere University of Technology in Finland

The objective of the article is to present the examples of the teaching of the health questions of electric and magnetic fields at TUT （Tampere university of technology） in Finland. At TUT, the education of the health questions of electric and magnetic fields has been integrated into part of four courses, which also include other environmental issues. TUT also products two times per year situation report bulletins on medical-oriented studies related to electric and magnetic fields so that graduates and people working in transmission line projects can follow new studies of the area. It is important to develop more education of EMF health questions, so people can more easily understand how new devices and technologies work.

Analysis on Constructing College Students＇ Employment Ability Influence Factor Model

It makes an empirical study of college students＇ employment ability and influence factor situation. Based on the questionnaire of 388 graduates of different subjects, through the explorative Ihctors and confirmatory factor analysis, it finds that the college students＇ employment ability influence factor model includes employment quality and employment expectation of 13 factors, and the model fitting is better. The employment ability influence factor model of college students is good for university education, enterprise recruitment strategy adjustment and students＇ self development.

Research on mental health benefits of sports development of college students
