University Students' Perceptions of English Teachers' Codeswitching in Class

Out of the pedagogical concern, many teaching practitioners condu... Foreign language teachers' codeswitching (CS) between Foreign Language (FL) and Mother Tongue (MT) in class has been under discussion for years. Out of the pedagogical concern, many teaching practitioners conducted various studies in different contexts aiming at describing, quantifying, and interpreting teachers' CS between FL and MT in class. However, up till now little attention is paid to students' perceptions and understandings of teachers' CS, which may help improve educators' understanding of the phenomenon in FL classrooms. This paper presents the result of two focus group interviews with groups of Chinese university students at their third and fourth year of college. Following a formal interview outline, issues on students' recall, understanding and evaluation of teachers' CS are addressed in the interview. Based on the analysis of the interviews, a better understanding on foreign language teachers' CS is gained, and students' perceptions on teachers' purposes and reasons for CS are drawn. A framework for investigating foreign language teachers' CS in Chinese universities is proposed with two hypotheses generated. 展开更多

This thesis is based on Rogers' humanistic teaching theory, which uses questionnaires, inteview and comparative analysis to analyze the current situation of micro-environment in college English learning. It discusses the construction of micro-environment in college English learning based on Rogers' humanistic teaching theory and the ways to construct it from software conditions (roles of teachers and students, relationship between teachers and students, the classroom atmosphere) and hardware conditions(teaching resources, a classroom). 展开更多

Over the past decades, increasingly more critical thinking (CT) in Western countries. attention has been paid to cultivating learners' Chinese educators and teachers have also realized the necessity of developing Chinese students' ability for critical thinking and advocated pedagogical reform. However, the practice of formal instruction in developing learners' critical thinking and related empirical studies are rarely seen. This pilot research, selecting four major critical thinking skills, is aimed to study the effects of formal instruction on the development of Chinese college students' critical thinking ability. With the quantitative and qualitative research, the findings indicate that the intensive instruction is effective in improving the sample's critical thinking ability, NOT in terms of the observed behavioral change, BUT in terms of their unobservable mental awareness. 展开更多
