Gone were the post-war years, and with them the autarchy, poverty and famine, characteristics of that time. After a transitory fifties decade, the country entered a prosperous time, which is known as the develompentism sixties--desarrollismo. The franscoism itself promoted this change. Meanwhile, it became a mandatory to guide the population so the fostered modem life did not imply, among other issues, an abandonment of the traditional gender order. Popular cinema played a key role in that objective. Particularly tourism narratives had direct implications on the renewed way to understand gender identities. In this article we will approach two blockbusters, as representative examples of the mainstream films productions, through which analyse how masculinity and femininity were screened and considered.展开更多

Each work uses the topic of the war to raise the issues of identity and loyalty that loom large during wartime, when nations place huge demands on their people. Both works explore these issues as relevant to their own time. In the 1960s, Catch-22 elevates loyalty to self as a value and challenges the dehumanizing conformity demanded by the bureaucratic states of the postwar world. Twenty-six years later, The English Patient honors loyalty to people rather than to nations. Both movies end in hope, with Yossarian's escape in Catch-22, and the end to the European war in The English Patient. This paper argues that Michael Ondaatje's novel, The English Patient, goes beyond the issues of identity and loyalty and the hopeful Hollywood ending as seen in the movies. By giving Kip's and Hana's points of view, which were not shown in the film--the view of a brown man in a world controlled by whites and of a woman who understands the horrors of the atomic bomb--Ondaatje offers the possibilities of a new sense of identity and loyalty, one more in tune with issues of a post-colonial 21 st century world展开更多

Mechanical, physical and barrier properties of different chitosan films incorporating garlic oil at 25, 50 and 100 μL/g chitosan or potassium sorbate at 25, 50 and 100 mg/g chitosan as antifungal agents were studied. Addition of garlic oil or potassium sorbate into the films did not alter their color except at the highest concentration of garlic oil which resulted in a more yellowish film. Garlic oil reduced film strength and elongation but it had no effect on water vapor transmission rate. Potassium sorbate reduced film strength and water vapor transmission rate, but it increased oxygen transmission rate. Films containing garlic oil or potassium sorbate was used to wrap around garlic bread to evaluate its shelf life. The development of mold on the bread surface was observed daily. The results showed that garlic bread wrapped in chitosan film incorporating garlic oil had 23 days shelf life, compared with only 7 days shelf life of garlic bread without wrapping. Garlic bread wrapped by film containing potassium sorbate had 13 days shelf life. Garlic breads wrapped by the films incorporating either garlic oil or potassium sorbate were acceptable in terms of sensory evaluation.展开更多

Although compared with the two-hour-long films, the trailers are insignificant. It takes certain skills to make moderate spoilers and sufficient gimmicks in this short period of time, while at the same time to hoist the audience appetite. Films are a result of cutting, so are trailers. But it is obviously insufficient for us to analyze their relationship only from the angle of editing techniques and art. This study is based on the perspective of large data, in which the clips of the trailers are abstracted in visual scenes by comparing the lenses of different tracks in editing software. In this way, we can get the time code of the lenses of the feature. Furthermore, when putting back the time code of the trailers into the movies again, we can have a vivid diagram of the trailers and film by using these time code and directly reveal the relationship between the trailers and the features.展开更多

The Uprising shows that the war was not a simple fight of good against evil (as it often perceived in Western Europe) but that in fact three sides, each with different goals, were involved--two totalitarian systems and the world of Western democracies. Memory is a phenomenon that is directly related to the present; our perception of the past is always influenced by the present. The aim of the author's presentation is to examine how the collective memory of Polish people about the Warsaw Rising was changing. The author would argue that the remembrance of this event is situated between the communicative memory and cultural memory. To prove it, the author will examine two movies: Sewer (1956) by Andrzej Wajda, Eroica (1956) by Andrzej Munk, and the narrative exhibition of the Warsaw Rising Museum.展开更多

In Cinema 2: The Time-Image (1989), Deleuze argues that post-Second World War cinema has been shaped by a historical transformation compelling it to create new signs and images. Centering on the post-war landscape of Cyprus in 1974, the moment of "historical transformation" in Deleuze is transposed to this national context; examining Lapithi's response to the crisis of historical time in its relation to physical spaces. It negotiates a contextualized reading of three videos and argues that they manifest Deleuzian "time-images". These texts react to the territorialization of real spaces by deterritorializing official national history. Using Martin Jones' study, Deleuze, cinema and national identity: Narrative time in national contexts (2006) Lapithi's time-images are interpreted as "unruly" as they resist a linear narrative and destabilize public time. Contrary to Martin Jones's view that time-images constitute a temporary deviation from flowing national time, the author argues that Lapithi excavates alternative temporalities in perpetuity; whilst proposing that in the context of Cyprus the deterritorialization of space by time postpones the nation's identity.展开更多

To help their students become effective listeners becomes one of the great challenging tasks for the language teachers. In the Chinese contexts, this challenge is greater for college English teachers, for listening skills, an important part of communication skills, have not been given as much attention as reading or writing skills in teaching non-English majors, especially a decade ago. This paper introduces English movies on English listening teaching in college, and puts forward some application strategies of English movies in English listening teaching.展开更多

Twelve equations were obtained for the relation. The results show that the pressure drop of the tube bundles increases with increase of the maximum velocity of air and the mass flux of spray water. Comparing the pressure drop of the bare tube bundles with that of the film-enhanced tube bundles, it is found that the pressure drop of the film-enhanced tube bundles is lower about 11% and the surface roughness of the film-enhanced plates is a main factor that influences the pressure drop. The data and method obtained in the paper can be used to compute the pressure drop of the film-enhanced tube bundles and is helpful for selection of fan.展开更多
