This paper intends to fill this vacuum. It seeks to rediscover Epstein's communist experience, with particular focus on his fervent activism in and unapologetic defense of the Cultural Revolution. Through analyzing his experience, this paper exposes the essential allurement of Chinese communism encapsulated in the ideals of revolutionary regeneration and revolutionary virtues. Beyond Epstein's communist experience, this paper calls for a deeper and broader pondering on the analogy between communism and religion. Such an illuminating analogy should inspire more intellectual efforts than critical expositions of formalistic vainglory or personality cult.展开更多

Such a method actually also often exists in different scenes in our ancient literature and different scenes and jumping thinking thoughts form a series of montage in the mind, and then it can be expressed through poetry. This case is the same as it in art, different time and spaces, the characters appear in a scene in a picture, and we distinguish them with a series of symbols to convergence in each scene. Therefore, we can say that if the montage was born after his birth of firms in the twentieth century, then it has existed since ancient time, and it has always existed in the fine arts, however, such thinking played an important role in the development of Chinese art, especially in the convergence and performance practices screen scene.展开更多

Borges's paradoxes of time, immortality, and eternity give meaning to the vision, while the natural wonder gives substance to those idealist concepts derived from Berkeley. As a reader of Borges's fictions, I yield up my personal identity to an impersonal dreaming consciousness that resembles Berkeley's mind as a consciousness sustaining the reality I perceive. Borges writes in his poem "Dawning" that "ideas are not like marble, everlasting, but ever-renewing like a forest or a river". The cataracts of Iguazu are both eternal and immortal, eternal in the sense of removing our consciousness of time and confusing past, present, and future in constant repetition, and immortal in the sense of only existing in individual drops of water constantly disappearing and renewing in infinite repetition. The cataracts are perfect emblems of this immortality. The cataracts are time, infinite moments of immortality, moving forward, accelerating, repeating themselves identically, until they achieve a certain eternity, no motion, suspended in time. I am Berkeley's Eternal Spirit, the consciousness evoked by Borges in his essay, "A New Refutation of Time". Distance from the immediate impact of the Falls helps transform fear and horror into sublimity. The closer to the Falls, the more the observer feels fear and anguish at his own insignificance, a fear of annihilation. Aesthetic distance requires an image or word, something that exempts us from immediate contact, and allows us to descend into the whirlpool and come back to the calm surface. The vision evoked in writing and reading fiction is both prior and subsequent to the reading. Our vision of the universe is always inexpressible, a problem of accommodating something overwhelming to the limited schemata we use to grasp existence.展开更多

In The Red Violin, Girard's cinematic experiments apply techniques of montage and of repetitive musical theme, practicing intertextuality of non-chronological stories by paralleling various memories of each individual character, blurring the biological and metaphorical boundaries between the living and non-living, and highlighting the fateful interrelations among time, space and different characters' life experiences. In this vein, the memories and beings of both the living and the dead are tightly woven together while reproduced--or further, relived--in temporal, spatial and trans-individual dynamics. Reversing the negative imaginaries of loss and death, both Derrida and The Red Violin agree with a messianic work of mourning by exploring the powerful potentiality of spectrality that manifests a way to mutualize the subject/ other, the living/non-living, into a promised being, thus gesturing towards an infinite future.展开更多

The new fossils include a relatively complete male skull and mandible with all upper and lower dentition, a broken female skull with fragment of mandible and a broken Mc III of Equus sp. The fossils were collected from the Yangshuizhan site of Nihewan. The age of the formation is about 1.6 Ma. The new materials verify some classification characteristics based on teeth published in previous descriptions. These characteristics include large teeth size, short protocone, and tilted protoloph and metaloph. We have added to these characteristics of large skull size, a developed protuberantia supramagna, pentagonal nuchal side, weak Pli cabaline, simple enamel plications; a series of new characteristics strikingly different from the other Equus horses. The broken Mc III is similar to Equus qingyangensis from Qingyang, Gansu.展开更多

Despite showing a strong power in demonstrating complex wave field effects, this technique has neither been fully explored in acoustic imaging nor been realized in real-time systems with the capability beyond diffraction limits. On the other hand, the recent prospect of metamaterials has shown their great potentials in superresolution acoustic imaging. However, the miracle jigsaw of more advanced functional modulation of acoustic wave fields at deep subwavelength scale still remains elusive. Here we report the experimental implementation of super-resolution acoustic image montage through a judiciously designed biaxial metamaterial lens. Based on the non-diffraction birefringence in the biaxial metamaterials, we realized various montage functionalities such as duplication, composition, and decomposition of sound images with distinctive deep subwavelength features. Our work represents an important step in developing versatile functional acoustic metamaterial devices for imaging purposes, as it provides on-demand editing of sound field patterns beyond diffraction limits.展开更多
