On Second Language Learners＇ Lexical Competence

The paper discusses SL learners＇ lexical competence from O＇Connor＇s Five Steps of Vocabulary Acquisition Theory, Collins ＆ Loftus＇s Semantic Network Theory and Fay ＆ Cutler＇s Mental Lexicon Theory. From the discussion, the author finds that second language learners＇ lexical competence includes the following aspects： the ability to recall the words which are similar to the target words in spelling and pronunciation; the ability to recall the synonyms of the target words; the ability to recall the antonyms of the target words; and the ability to recall the related words which come together with the target words in a context. Meanwhile it advances some strategies to develop the corresponding competence.

The Implication of the Research of CALL in English Teaching in China

In the rapidly evolving academic field of CALL （computer-assisted language leaming） in China, it is no longer a question of whether to take advantage of the technologies of computer and Internet in foreign language instruction, but of how to make effective use of them. By reviewing the literature of CALL in China and abroad, this article holds the view that in China where the educational resources are insufficient and unevenly distributed, the use of CALL should confirm and expand ESL/EFL theories to the utmost; the research of CALL should focus more on learning or learner, especially on learning strategy in CALL environment; to have a better understanding of the potential and functions of CALL in foreign language instruction, the research of CALL should cover all aspects of language learning.

The Application of Error Analysis in College English Teaching

Error analysis theory is an important aspect in SLA （second language acquisition） study, which is quite significant for exploring English teaching rules and improving teaching methods. Error analysis theory is also a useful means in English teaching and study. Through analyzing learners＇ errors, some regular patterns will be discovered. Language learning is a process of making mistakes, correcting them, and enhancing language ability. In order to promote language teaching, teachers should analyze carefully the causes of students＇ mistakes and take different measures to put them right. This paper will study error analysis and related theory, focus on the causes and the types of the errors in students＇ writing, and discuss the coping strategy in English teaching

An Article Review： Impact of Explicit Instruction on EFL Learners＇ Implicit and Explicit Knowledge： A Case of English Relative Clauses

This review discusses Nezakat-Alhossaini, Youhanaee, and Moinzadeh＇s research study entitled ＂Impact of Explicit Instruction on EFL Learners＇ Implicit and Explicit Knowledge： A Case of English Relative Clauses.＂ This study was chosen for evaluation because it strives to attach significance to explicit instruction in L2 acquisition, unlike other more recent research, which seeks to reinforce implicit instruction as it is viewed as the idealistic goal of language learning （Rebuschat ＆ William, 2009）. The present review will be developed by means of an evaluation of Alhossaini and her colleagues＇ study, consisting of a concise summary of the study, a classification of the philosophical perspective, the selection of criteria, and the strengths and weaknesses of the study. In this review, I hope that I succeed to broadly navigate the research enterprise, commencing with the philosophical perspective of research, such as the epistemological and ontological stances shaping the philosophical perspective and then colouring the research. By reviewing this study, I would also hope that I successfully evaluate the research quality by using appropriate criteria in an attempt to suggest potential directions for further research （under strengths and weaknesses of the study）.

On Prototypes from the Perspective of Semantics and Categorization

Cognitive linguistics is a new approach to language study, which can offer better explanation for language phenomena, and provide more theoretical instructions for English learning. In recent years, the prototype theory, as the cornerstone of cognitive linguistics, has been employed in different research fields, such as phonology, syntax, semantics, English teaching, etc..This thesis attempts to review and discuss the researches done so far on semantics and categorization based on a cognitive theory -- the prototype theory.
