A survey of ampullectomy practices

AIM： To investigate the endoscopic ampullectomy practices of expert biliary endoscopists. METHODS： An anonymous expert biliary endoscopists practices. survey was mailed to 79 to assess ampullectomy RESULTS： Forty six （58%） biliary endoscopists returned the questionnaire. Of these, 63% were in academia and in practice for an average of 16.4 years （± 8.6）. Endoscopists performed an average of 1.1 （± 0.8） ampullectomies per month. Prior to ampullectomy, endoscopic ultrasound was ＂always＂ utilized by 67% of respondents vs ＂sometimes＂ in 31% of respondents. Empiric biliary sphincterotomy was not utilized uniformly, only 26% ＂always＂ and 37% ＂sometimes＂ performed it prior to resection. Fifty three percent reported ＂never＂ performing empiric pancreatic sphincterotomy prior to ampullectomy. Practitioners with high endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography volumes were the most likely to perform a pancreatic sphincterotomy （OR = 10.9; P = 0.09）. Participants overwhelmingly favored ＂always＂ placing a prophylactic pancreatic stent, with 86% placing it after ampullectomy rather than prior to resection （23%）. Argon plasma coagulation was the favored adjunct modality （83%） for removal of residual adenomatous tissue. Practitioners uniformly （100%） preferred follow-up examination to be within 6 mo postmpullectomy.CONCLUSION： Among biliary experts, there is less variation in ampultectomy practices than is reflected in the literature.

Hellinger distance based probability distribution approach to performance monitoring of nonlinear control systems

Control performance monitoring has attracted great attention in both academia and industry over the past two decades. However, most research efforts have been devoted to the performance monitoring of linear control systems, without considering the pervasive nonlinearities(e.g. valve stiction) present in most industrial control systems. In this work, a novel probability distribution distance based index is proposed to monitor the performance of non-linear control systems. The proposed method uses Hellinger distance to evaluate change of control system performance. Several simulation examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Studies on a Korean Buddhism Community： Searching for Unity Through Open Discourse

Korean Buddhism community has tried to develop its traditions as well as maintaining them through open discussion. Some current incidents, such as the election of the director for the headquarters of the Chogye Order, controversial issues on a prime minster nominee, and the difference between practicing and learning which has been discussed in Buddhist Academia, have generated a new wave in the Korean Buddhism world. Many religious practices which have infiltrated Korean society, including Catholicism and Christianity, have been indigenized to become a unique religious form combined with Korean Shamanism, through which individuals want to achieve personal happiness or material prosperity. Buddhism has been through the same process. Additionally, Buddhism has played a leading role in teaching the public of Korea for a long time and has become a model role for solving national crises. Currently, the Korean Buddhism world has tried to be reborn as a religion that keeps these beneficial traditions in Korea, and the Korean Buddhism can play a positive role in every aspect of culture, politics, and society. Further, the Korean Buddhism is looking for ways to influence Korean society through open discussions. This paper brings out issues that Korean Buddhism faces and presents the solutions to solve those problems.

Scientific Basis and Technological Path of Regional Strategic Environmental Assessment

The study tries to set up a system to extract strategic environmental assessment (SEA) in exploitation of regional development based on the present situation of environmental assessment in China. First, the article summarizes the emphasis and deficiency of international academic community’s SEA research in the past 10 years. Based on this, the article puts forward the concept and evaluation principles of regional strategic environmental assessment (RSEA). Then the article expounds the necessity of carrying out RSEA. After that, the article discusses in detail the process of RSEA, which includes defining evaluation scope, describing regional background, combing strategic behavior, designing development scenarios, predicting the pressure on environment, assessing environmental impact, screening alternatives and proposing regulation and control schemes.

Reforms in the Education System Follow up the Change in the Role of the School Principal, and Its Impact on the Implementation of the Change of Education

In the recent decades, the academic literature engages more and more with reforms in the education system. These reforms that are worldwide seek to create change in education （Adler, 2010）. If it＇s regarding the position of the school principal as designer leader has significant role in the reforms management, but, moreover the role of this article is to the change of the role of the school principal over the years. The functions of the school principal integrate managerial aspects and leadership aspects and its importance is immenseness of the operation of the school organization, both in the terms of the organization customers, the pupils, and in the terms of the organization＇s staff--teachers. Not less important is the operation and implementation of educational reforms. We have to see the role of the school principal as the most significant to the implementing of the reform in the education system.

The Rush to IFRS： Practice Vs Academe, Is the Need to Change the CPA Exam Genuine？

In October 2010, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants [AICPA] announced that the CPA （Certified Public Accountant） examination would be changed to include International Financial Reporting Standards （IFRS）. A reason given for this change was the supposed importance given to IFRS knowledge in the latest practice analysis. This paper examines this practice analysis as well as a review by graduate students of some accounting textbooks. The conclusion given by the students, other academic research and the practice analysis is that US is not prepared to immediately make this change.

Role of Researcher/Academia in Making UK Low Carbon Policy

This study focuses on the role of researcher/academia in making low carbon policy in the UK. UK researchers and universities enjoy relatively high degree of independence of their research from the government due to its statute that guarantees its independence （＂The Haldene Principle＂）. In addition, there was a recent movement for evidence-based policy in the UK, which requires more economic and scientific robustness, therefore role of engineers and social scientists are increasingly important. In particular, social science will have a greater role in changing people＇s behavior with high level of uncertainty. UK businesses have played a leading role to move forward the climate policy such as UKETS （United Kingdom Emissions Trading Scheme） as well as low carbon policy. The regular communication and consultation is a crucial basis for making integrated policy, which involves wide range of stakeholders. The legally binding targets set out by Climate Change Act 2008 required structural change of the government to implement the necessary policies and measures especially by integrating climate and energy policy.

Theory Viewing Yeats＇s Poetic Modernization From Mask

As ＂the greatest poet in the 20th century＂, Yeats is always a hot topic among academic community. The question whether Yeats is the ＂last romantic＂ or the first Modernist remains controversial for a long time in academic field. Whether critics term Yeats a modernist or not, they generally agree that the poems produced in his late creative period are definitively modernist works. This paper targets Yeats＇s realization of poetic modernization through his mask theory applied in ＂Crazy Jane＂ poems. It discusses the poetic movement in the beginning of the 20th century, the poetic theory Yeats proposed and instances Yeats＇s mask theory as the manifestation of his poetic modernization. The author argues that with his innovation in verse writing particularly demonstrated by application of mask theory in ＂Crazy Jane＂ poems, Yeats unquestionably played a very important role in Anglo-American modernist poetry.

Integrated Welfare Systems and Disclosure： Approaching Emerging Issues

The aim of this paper is to investigate the integrated welfare and disclosure by proposing emerging issues in the contemporary scenario. Thus, company welfare is represented as internal sociability; environmental protection or innovation can be interpreted as external sociability, representing the uses of resources that a company does not incur costs, but demonstrates its health and social responsibility. Following a theoretical approach, the paper proposes as result a conceptual study introducing an updated literature analysis on the topic proposed of the integrated welfare systems and disclosure trying to point out emerging issues through a case study. Moreover, the research methodology is based on a qualitative approach and secondary sources in order to propose not only to scientific community a literature analysis. In this way, the implications of the research can be directed to academic communities and policy makers. The research question is the following： Which are emerging issues on the integrated welfare and its disclosure？

Is Math Still Just a Man＇s World？

Awards are important markers of success in any career, and in academia they can play an important role in hiring, promotion and tenure decisions. This study compares awards data for disciplinary societies in STEM （science, technology, engineering and mathematics） to the proportion of women in each respective field. By establishing availability pool estimates of women who should be eligible for senior scholarly awards, a comparison can be made between the proportion of female award winners and the percentage of women active in the discipline. The CBMS （conference board of mathematical sciences） survey in 2005 reported that women were 9% of all full-time tenured professors in doctoral-level mathematics departments; yet during the last decade, women received only 4.8% of scholarly awards from the AMS （American mathematical society）. Similar disparities exist for scholarly achievement awards from the MAA （mathematical association of America）, the SIAM （society for industrial and applied mathematics） and the ASA （American statistical association）. The under-recognition of women for scholarly contributions cannot be attributed solely to low numbers of women, so further explanation must be sought elsewhere. Curiously, women received more than their expected proportion of awards for service and teaching. Decades of research in the social sciences points to ＂implicit associations＂ or subconscious social stereotypes as the mechanism by which both men and women de-value women＇s intellectual accomplishments and praise their communal contributions, which may explain the gender disparity between scholarly and service awards. Gender disparities in scholarly recognition can hinder the advancement of women and limit their numbers as leaders in STEM fields. AWIS （association for women in science） is working with seven disciplinary societies （including AMS, ASA, MAA and SIAM） to identify patterns of behavior that perpetuate unconscious bias in the awards selection process and to pinpoint ways to mitigate its deleterious effects.

Comprehensive Model for Business Training Based on B-Learning

Training and development for staff are the best option available for companies to survive in a highly competitive global business environment, but for those companies that operate business units located in different cities or countries, it has a high cost for the great dispersion of staff. B-learning is presented as a viable and interesting option that achieves superior results in the learning process while significantly reducing the costs associated with training. In the state of the art, B-learning has been addressed with greater emphasis in academics and the few articles that focused on addressing business training, present partial solutions to the problems exposed. This paper proposes a model that offers a comprehensive solution for managing corporate training based on B-learning, and consists of three phases： design, development and implementation.

Bridging academic science and clinical research in the search for novel targeted anti-cancer agents

This review starts with a brief history of drug discovery & development, and the place of Asia in this worldwide effort discussed. The conditions and constraints of a successful translational R&D involving academic basic research and clinical research are discussed and the Singapore model for pursuit of open R&D described. The importance of well-characterized, validated drug targets for the search for novel targeted anti-cancer agents is emphasized, as well as a structured, high quality translational R&D. Furthermore, the characteristics of an attractive preclinical development drug candidate are discussed laying the foundation of a successful preclinical development. The most frequent sources of failures are described and risk management at every stage is highly recommended. Organizational factors are also considered to play an important role. The factors to consider before starting a new drug discovery & development project are described, and an example is given of a successful clinical project that has had its roots in local universities and was carried through preclinical development into phase I clinical trials.

On the Relationship between Language and Culture

The so-called culture refers to the tradition and style of a nation to be gradually formed in the historical development process. Language is an important reflection to culture. In fact, all sorts of views about the relationship between language and culture have been proposed in the academic circles, which are varied greatly and unable to agree with each other. On Tourism Development Modes of Intangible Cultural Heritage in China

How to conserve and develop the intangible cultural heritage is one of the hot topics in both tourism industry and academic research area. In the past, argument of conflict relationship between tourism and intangible cultural heritage has prevailed, however, more and more researches now question it. Based on the analysis of values and characteristics of intangible cultural heritage, this paper considers that the relationship can be beneficial to both with the appropriate and modest development, meanwhile, this paper summarizes seven tourism development modes, and at last it gives some advice on integrative adoption of those development modes after the thorough comparison of the seven modes.
