Based on lifting steps, it is a flexible wavelet construction method using linear and nonlinear spatial prediction and operators to implement the wavelet transform and to make it reversible. The lifting scheme transform -includes three steps: split, predict, and update. Deslauriers-Dubuc (4, 2) wavelet transforms are used to process both synthetic and real data in our second-generation wavelet transform. The processing results show that random noise is effectively suppressed and the signal to noise ratio improves remarkably. The lifting wavelet transform is an efficient algorithm.展开更多

Consequently, enormous human lives and properties are lost every year. It is necessary to develop a coastal sea-state monitoring system. This paper introduces the coastal sea-state monitoring system (CSMS) along Taiwan coast. The COMC (Coastal Ocean Monitoring Center in National Cheng Kung University) built the Taiwan coastal sea-state monitoring system, which is modern and self-sufficient, consisting of data buoy, pile station, tide station, coastal weather station, and radar monitoring station. To assure the data quality, Data Quality Check Procedure (DQCP) and Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) were developed by the COMC. In further data analysis and data implementation of the observation, this paper also introduces some new methods that make the data with much more promising uses. These methods include empirical mode decomposition (EMD) used for the analysis of storm surge water level, wavelet transform used for the analysis of wave characteristics from nearshore X-band radar images, and data assimilation technique applied in wave nowcast operation. The coastal sea-state monitoring system has a great potential in providing ocean information to serve the society.展开更多

Wavelet estimation based on higher-order spectra is an important new method. However, the higher-order spectra often have phase wrapping problems, which lead to wavelet phase spectrum deviations and thereby affect mixed-phase wavelet estimation. To solve this problem, we propose a new phase spectral method based on conformal mapping in the bispectral domain. The method avoids the phase wrapping problems by narrowing the scope of the Fourier phase spectrum to eliminate the bispectral phase wrapping influence in the original phase spectral estimation. The method constitutes least-squares wavelet phase spectrum estimation based on conformal mapping which is applied to mixed-phase wavelet estimation with the least-squares wavelet amplitude spectrum estimation. Theoretical model and actual seismic data verify the validity of this method. We also extend the idea of conformal mapping in the bispectral wavelet phase spectrum estimation to trispectral wavelet phase spectrum estimation.展开更多

Her stories are sensitive revelations of human behaiour in quite ordinary situations, through which we can glimpse a powerful and sometimes cruelly pessimistic view of life. Miss Brill is one of her short stories published in her collection of stories entitled The Garden Party and Other Stories (2007), describing an afternoon in the life of a middle-aged spinster who visits the public park on a weekly basis, leading to her reassessment of her view of the world and the secular reality. Short as it is, it is really worth carful analysis and appreciation. This paper will mainly deal with the theme--alienation that the story conveys in two aspects: some obvious alienate elments in Miss Brill, in which some background information is provided; some less obvious alienation in Miss Brill, in which a detailed analysis is made into the story to reveal its alienation.展开更多

Since then, teachers have had a lot of work to be done. Every year they have to prepare an individualized programme for each child with special needs. They have to set goals that each child with special needs has to achieve at a particular subject. Pupils have different teachers every year and to make their work easier, the author is considering making a website database with basic information about them. This database would state the goals that the pupil achieved in the past year, which strategy of teaching proved to be the best for him or her and what the areas he or she needs help with are. Teachers would be collecting this data during the primary education, after the final evaluation this database would also be made available to the secondary school of the pupil in concern. This database should be located on the website of Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports. It would be available to primary schools, but protected by a password which would grant the school access to the data of their students only. In secondary schools, teachers could also access to the information, so they would not have to be discovering appropriate teaching strategies that worked for a pupil in the past all over again. This would enable better conditions and a successful education for pupils with special needs.展开更多

Students selected what they considered to be the most impressive lesson in a given week and reflected on ways to put the material contained in the lesson to practical use. Additionally they reflected on their experience outside the classroom in order to relate this experience to material covered in the lessons. Students had positive feelings about the LPs and recognized that the LPs helped them grow as students. But students had difficulty comprehending connections between the material presented in lessons and out-of-class experiences. Students indicated that the instructor's comments increased their motivation to continue working on the LPs. Instructors should make time to meet with students to discuss LPs in class, and this ideally would increase reciprocal understanding between instructors and students.展开更多

Various techniques of monitoring exist. Among all, the control of ground deformations and variations in sea level has considerable importance. Time series of ground deformation and tidal data in this area have been analysed to highlight these important geophysical features and these results are compared with those obtained from similar data in other time periods. With regard to first mentioned, tiltmetric data have been analysed. These ones come from the tiltmeter network sited in Pozzuoli. Instead, the tidal data come from the tide gauge in Pozzuoli. Data have been analysed by means of a wavelet approach, using a Continuos Wavelet Transform and using, as so-called "Wavelet Mother", a Gabor-Morlet wavelet. For each time series, the principal harmonic constituents result: lunar semidiurnal (M2), solar semidiumal (S2) and lunar diurnal (K1). Other harmonic constituents, having frequencies higher than 1/hour, are present. These last ones could be interpreted as seiches and they could be linked up with generation of discrete plumes of rising magma. Frequencies at which there is the occurrence of these seiches are in agreement with previous studies.展开更多

Due attention should be drawn to this super-genre absorbing varied subject matter. This paper looks into creative nonfiction as a form of art with a let-its-hair-down attitude generally in line with the genre. Creative nonfiction is held to be a paradoxically generic term covering subcategories such as memoir, biography, autobiography, history, and journalism. Instead of being walled off from one another, these subcategories mix and match to build up a work of truth, or rather elusive truth, which might sound stranger than fiction. In addition to the imaginative mix and match to open up new possibilities for writing, felicity of style is another add-on to doing it well. Hence creative nonfiction is conceived as an adventure to wrap up a somewhat strange story in a serendipitous form as well as a felicitous language. Hopefully, this three- quarter profile of the genre will be able to offer a thin slice of the picture to the audience.展开更多

First, the GRACE data are processed by wavelet analysis to remove abnormal jumps and noises. Then the theoretical impacts of the second-order potential coefficients on the inertia moment and LOD are studied. Finally, the processed GRACE data are applied and results show that mass redistribution has led to decreasing tendencies of inertia moment and LOD as well as some unexpected seasonal oscillations in the recent 6 years.展开更多
