In order to simulate changes in the water quality of the Miyun Reservoir dueto continuous descent of surface water level, a 3-D ecological hydrodynamic model was developedthrough coupling the water quality analysis simulation program (WASP) with the environmental fluiddynamics code (EFDC). The model was then calibrated and verified. Four scenarios (S1, S21, S22 andS23) were simulated using the model. Results show that the water quality of the Miyun Reservoirunder conditions of low surface water level is apparently affected by different amounts of inflowand different total phosphorus (TP) loadings. The chlorophyll-a concentration might exceed 10 μg/Lin many areas of the Miyun Reservoir (This limitative value is seen as a critical value ofeutrophication) when large loadings of TP enter due to the amount of inflow increasing. Results ofscenario S23 indicate that control of TP loadings can decrease chlorophyll-a concentrationeffectively, and the water quality of the Miyun Reservoir will improve or retain its status quo. 展开更多

In order to improve the performance of speech emotion recognition, a novel feature fusion method is proposed. Based on the global features, the local information of different kinds of features is utilized. Both the global and the local features are combined together. Moreover, the multiple kernel learning method is adopted. The global features and each kind of local feature are respectively associated with a kernel, and all these kernels are added together with different weights to obtain a mixed kernel for nonlinear mapping. In the reproducing kernel Hilbert space, different kinds of emotional features can be easily classified. In the experiments, the popular Berlin dataset is used, and the optimal parameters of the global and the local kernels are determined by cross-validation. After computing using multiple kernel learning, the weights of all the kernels are obtained, which shows that the formant and intensity features play a key role in speech emotion recognition. The classification results show that the recognition rate is 78. 74% by using the global kernel, and it is 81.10% by using the proposed method, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method. 展开更多

In this study, Huizhou-style miniature landscapes, plants of virtual implications, flowers or fruit trees of special connotations are taken for examples to analyze the influence of Xin’an Neo-Confucianism on plant landscapes in Huizhou-style gardens, the demonstration of Huizhou businessmen’s aesthetic tastes, as well as folk cultures of Huizhou, which implies that plant landscapes in Huizhou-style gardens are those incorporating with humanistic spirits, ornamental and practical uses. Objective:As a developable ability,empathy is significantly associated with patient-centered care.The authors intended to evaluate the effect of Virtual Dementia Tour(VDT)upon nursing students'empathy level and propose practical rationales for optimizing future dementia care.Methods:A total of 45 second-year undergraduate nursing students were organized to watch a theme movie entitled Still Alice and participate in an 8-min VDT.Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professional Students(JSE-HPS)was employed for evaluating the empathy level of nursing students.After VDT,all nursing students participated in a structured interview.Descriptive statistics and paired t-tests were performed using SPSS 24.0.Results:Their empathy levels demonstrated significant overall improvements(106.69±9.49 vs 115.51±10.16,P<0.01).During the course of VDT,nursing students experienced varying levels of anxiety and frustration.All of them were satisfied with the program since they had gained a deeper understanding of demented patients and the program could change their attitudes toward demented elders.Conclusion:Watching a specially selected movie and participating in VDT may be an effective method for enhancing empathy and caring during nursing student education. 展开更多

To overcome the deficiencies of high computational complexity and low convergence speed in traditional neural networks, a novel bio-inspired machine learning algorithm named brain emotional learning (BEL) is introduced. BEL mimics the emotional learning mechanism in brain which has the superior features of fast learning and quick reacting. To further improve the performance of BEL in data analysis, genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted for optimally tuning the weights and biases of amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex in BEL neural network. The integrated algorithm named GA-BEL combines the advantages of the fast learning of BEL, and the global optimum solution of GA. GA-BEL has been tested on a real-world chaotic time series of geomagnetic activity index for prediction, eight benchmark datasets of university California at Irvine (UCI) and a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) dataset for classifications. The comparisons of experimental results have shown that the proposed GA-BEL algorithm is more accurate than the original BEL in prediction, and more effective when dealing with large-scale classification problems. Further, it outperforms most other traditional algorithms in terms of accuracy and execution speed in both prediction and classification applications. 展开更多

The aim of the current study is to discuss the value of poetry writing in an L2 (second language) by investigating perceptions, attitudes, and emotions of 20 EFL (English as a Foreign Language) college freshmen regarding writing Japanese poetry, haiku in English. This paper first discussed issues and uses of literature in L2 contexts and addressed the current empirical inquiry into L2 haiku writing as a method for L2 learning. The study was designed as a qualitative research which investigated the participants' reflection on writing L2 haikus for six weeks in an EFL college writing course. The data obtained was analyzed by using the coding system and showed that writing haiku in the target language was a challenging but valuable task for L2 learning among the EFL students. Amid the recent global upsurge of studies on the philosophy of emotion, a reinterpretation of traditional Confucian philosophy, especially Mencius's ideas on the siduan (Four Original Sources) of morality, may shed new light on the subject in comparative philosophy. This paper probes the structure of moral feeling and reason described by Mencius's from five perspectives: (1) In view of the relationship between feeling and reason, is it better to use the expression "siduan" or the expression "sixin (Four Heart-minds)"? (2) In view of dispositional feeling, what are the four original sources? (3) In view of moral feeling, what are the structural order of the four sources and the corresponding procedure of reasoning of four heart-minds of Humanity? (4) In view of positive feeling, how does moral feeling grow out of the goodness of human nature? (5) What is the global value of Mencius's ideas on human moral feeling? The author concludes that Mencius's thought on moral feeing has a global value and cross-cultural significance, and that Chinese wisdom is more than regional but universally applicable. The structure of moral feeling and reason that Mencius identified is in accordance with the principles ofzhiliang (grasping the two poles of the beginning and the end) and yongzhong (emloying the middle). The principles ofzhiliang and yongzhong are true universal wisdoms of Confucianism, which should be rekindled today. From a practical point of view, "the Way begins from moral feelings," and Confucius and Yah Hui's seeking the simple, virtuous life is an ideal model of emotional well-being. 展开更多

The presentation of the findings of this article is based on an action research focused on the supportive role of the school in adolescents' lives, whereby Religious Education's contribution to the social and emotional development of adolescents (11-15) is combined with the evaluation of the potential offered by a constructivist approach to the learning process. The research commenced in 2012 and is now in its third "year. The project is based on an intervention at a high school in an impoverished suburb of Athens and researches educational practices through interpretative-ethnographic methods. The researcher has attempted to answer the question of whether the design of the learning environments is effective not only in the learning process, but also on inter-communication and "connectedness" between the members of the learning community. The findings so far indicate a correlation between adolescents' emotional and social wellbeing and the school's approach to knowledge and learning methods, specifically in Religious Education classes. It is fair to say, however, that there exist ethnic, social and family components that are negatively related to a sense of"connectedness" within the school although at the same time Religious Education as a subject is, however, found to be positively related to learning community atmosphere. 展开更多

Empathic cognition gives people a chance "to let" the emotions of the Other "go" into their minds. Empathic cognition is based on so-called co-suffering and in-sensation of the feelings of the Other or Others. Clots of energy or certain energy units are formed in consciousness of each person, they are called "subjective representants". It is possible to understand the Other or Others and to decipher the main idea of the poem (if the task to work on translation is given) and to express it in the native language if to find out not only the meanings of the words but the symbols the author has used in his poem. The reader "goes into" the world of the author trying to be near the author and trying to grasp what the author felt working on the poem. There is something what gives us a possibility to enter into the world of a creative personality. This "something" is empathic cognition. 展开更多
